Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Thankful that I owned one of the 500,000 copies of the Dangerous Crew album! In Alaska at that! Amazing insight that it was supposed to be Shorty B's album.

Funny thing is, one of Shorts "Special Requests" era songs with Freddie B made it to the internet, and they are freestyling on there for like 10 minutes straight...

I disagree with Shorty B saying all Ant Banks songs sounded alike. The instrumentation that he used gave him a signature sound. You could always tell it was Banks. There’s a difference between making songs that all sound alike and songs that have a signature sound.

I also disagree on $hort freestyling. I'm certain some of them old tracks were freestyle. His style played so perfectly into it. It might not be as fancy as something written and during that era you had fancy lyricists faking like they were freestyling some written rhymes. I'm on the outside looking in but I can see $hort doing both.

@@madmerdhyntheblack911 I remember watching a KRS-ONE interview one time and he said back in the day freestyling meant that the rhymes weren’t attached to a song. Even if you wrote them, if they weren’t from an actual song then they were considered free style. The interview is on RU-vid somewhere.

@@leogolive that's just spitting rhymes. Freestyling is off the top to purists. Maybe that's why Shorty B said Too $hort never freestyled to his knowledge. Maybe they didn't consider zoning to the beat a rocking a one take off the top freestyling so much as writing a song quickly. I can see $hort not using rhymes for pure entertainment without monetary gain.
