This is without question one of the finest performances of this symphony. Wow...just wow. They need to try their hand at the Shostakovich 8th...VERY difficult piece to perform.

My thoughts exactly. I've never heard anyone match Kondrashin and the Moscow Phil in the 8th for sheer intensity, but Dudamel and SBYO might be able to.

Gustavo Dudamel brings out the very best of this highly talented group. His conducting evokes the elegiac and dramatic qualities, with which Shostakovitch imbues in this particular epic symphony; in my opinion, one of the composer's masterpieces, played here with both solemnity and passion. It's just astounding and very noteworthy, all in all, also a joy to listen to.

Unfortunately, however, this project, supported by the Venezuelan government, probably won't last. Theres a smell of coup in the air, and, as ever in Latin America, the local elite and high-middle class will take power. And, also as ever, will cut social costs, in the name of "financial equilibrium", which means, more money to the riches.

SHOSTAKOVICH IS THE MOST BADASS COMPOSER!!!!! Just discovered him in spring of 2020. He was decades ahead of his time. If I were to hear his symphonies (10, 7, 5, 8, 11, 12) for the very first time BUT didn't know who composed them OR WHEN, I'd think they were for an epic action movie filmed after 1980. I'm going to break my own rules. I don't believe in the 'best' or 'greatest' but for me this the greatest symphony yet written, & this the best performance I've heard. Shostakovitch sees EVERYTHING. Love, beauty, grandeur, horror, cruelty, everything that is in this world. And it's driving him insane. The section starting about 12.40 (I wish I knew the technical terms for his genius, but whatever techniques he uses are always subservient to his music, his humanity) develops at 17 minutes into the most distraught, compassionate piece of music I've ever heard. It has me in tears. Literally stunning. To paraphrase: Dmitri Will Tear You Apart Again.

I thought that only Russian conductors and orchestras really knew how to play this piece. The only truly excellent performances I've heard were on Melodiya LP's. Well, Dudamel knows this piece and knows how it should be played: fast, hot, and full of energy where it's needed and quiet and subtle where it's not. Of course, he needs an orchestra to do his bidding but he has a great one here. It's full of kids and they are terrific. There are little mistakes here and there, the kinds you hear with the best orchestras, and those only add to the magic of the performance.

well, it starts at such a peak high of desperation there's nowhere to go. Much of the first movement is actually rather muted. Also, it's in 3/4; there's that little thing called irony which is completely bludgeoned to death this way. Obviously the orchestra can't help that, it;s the conductor.

@@RustemShagimardanov Except that that's very much an open question. His daughter Galina states in the Weinstein film that the controversial book "Testimony:The Memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich" (which my source material from 1998 says had yet to be translated into Russian by its publication date) is in line with what she heard while growing up, and his son concurs. These are his children agreeing with the book, which in its turn concludes that he was a "bitter and frightened [man] who cooperated with the Communist regime only as far as he felt was necessary to survive." Then there's that second movement. If there were ever a true and accurate musical portrait of Stalin, one that tells the listener everything important that there is to know about him, it is the second movement from this symphony. I believe what his children had to say: he was a prominent figure loving under Stalin who did what every other prominent figure at the time did to keep the state happy with him: he did what he had to, to survive.

@mangstadt1
@mangstadt1 9 лет назад
Alejandro Lopez El segundo movimiento (Scherzo.

Venezuela is an amazing country with amazing people. For the Latin American world, Venezuela is the birthplace national sovereignty and dignity. Venezuela is also a danger. Because it shows the Ruler of the World, that with dignity and courage you can break the chains of slavery. For the United States, Venezuela is a runaway slave. To punish Venezuela, the Empire has imposed a brutal economic siege on the disobedient Venezuelans. Many traitors have run away. Those who remain and endure the US imposed siege are prepared to die to defend the motherland. These musicians are all the children of the beloved, Hugo Chavez. Mess with Venezuela at your own peril.

Yes, it's a youth orchestra, and a pretty good one too. But for a mature version of this majestic symphony (I agree DSCH's best) you can't beat the 90-year-old Skrowaczewski, (also on this platform). That is a truly deep and profound understanding of what tyranny meant to this composer. Who lived it. This, Dudamel version is a little bit, what shall we say, juvenile and not fully developed. OK, its fast, but is that the point? For profundity, there's the wonderful Stanislaw. Pip Pip

Sometimes I think it's a counter-sense that Shostakovich is well-played for players trained in a socialist system. Shostakovich talks to us about misery of human condition, the one which he observed in USSR. So when Dudamel and "his" orchestra play Shostakovich, they are all denouncing the syestem from what all they emerged :S

Definitely not merely a performance that's to be graded as "excellent considering" that these are university-level young adults, but "excellent overall ABSOLUTE"!!! [I can only fault the principal flautist for not being able to get all of the low B-naturals to speak in the 3rd movement, in addition to a few string pizzicati at the end of the First movement as well as a couple of spots elsewhere for not having the ultimate degree of togetherness.] As of the time of the writing of this review, I've also heard (via RU-vid) Skrowaczewski, Gjérgijev and Kondráshin (the list now also includes Karajan, Haitink and then Jansons - that last one I definitely dislike, while Haitink feels like his heart isn't fully in it given how he seems to underplay so much...) - yet awaiting are Mitropoulos (via RU-vid) plus definitely Rostropóvich (via private CD-collection). The remarkable thing is that each of those performances has something unique and individual to say - leaving Haitink and Jansons aside, none of the other five performances, Dudamel included, deserves "also-ran" disdain. That said, I find myself gravitating to this performance on account of: - 1) the spacious and really loving, even heartbroken, atmosphere Dudamel summons in the 1st-movement - contrasted with a real break-neck reading of the 2nd-mvt. which really not only evokes the monstrosity of Stáljin (that movement is supposed to be a portrait of him, with the entire symphony being a reflection of how the composer managed to survive that ultra-tyrant's cruelty and brutality) but does so in a reading that is almost as fast as what Shostakóvich himself played in his 2-piano version (I forget who was the companion pianist - alas, the video-clip is no longer available...); - 2) the youthful enthusiasm and red-blooded commitment tangible throughout the performance; - 3) the extra-lush and powerful sonorities that result from the orchestra being so extra-big (97 strings, if I've counted them right!) as to have all the main-woodwinds and entire brass sections doubled from the normal numbers. If you want a faster reading, go for Kondráshin (yet his reading of the 2nd movement is marginally slower than Dudamel's, which even Kondráshin's extra-precision can't quite compensate for); if you want an even more Western and polished feel (traditionally, Russia since Peter the Great has had a severe dichotomy between "Westernisers" and "Slavophiles"!!!), Karajan has plenty to offer; otherwise, one dares not go any slower in this symphony. Definitely 5/5.
