VALERY GERGIEV - MUSICAL DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR THE MARIINSKY ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS 3° DE DICIEMBRE DEL 2013 - December 3rd, 2013 TEATRO SALLE PLEYEL IN PARIS
Kirk Smith, I return to this symphony and this performance after several years. The extended 1st movement has a sad almost longing tone to it. If my chronology is right I believe it was written before the USSR was invaded by Germany. His next symphony would be the patriotic, bombastic "Leningrad" symphony. Bernstein left us a no holds barred exciting performance of the 7th, but I still prefer the 6th.
In paucis, sic in magnis, amicus Demetrius maximus est, hic magnificatus, si fas est, ab eximio Valerio. Valete, maximi musici, gloria sanctae Russiae!
I had the opportunity to see Leonard Bernstein conduct this with the NYPO in 1990. I was in 5th row orchestra. I got an incredible understanding for this Symphony #6. It takes its time unfolding. But its one of Shosta best. It was a special thrill for me.
Hearing the opening movement of this 6th after hearing the Adagio from the Gayane Ballet Suite setting the tone for the scene in Kubrick's 2001 introducing the Jupiter mission spacecraft on its journey in extreme isolation, I immediately envisioned a fleet of spacecraft on a similar mission to Jupiter but this time with 1000s of occupants to diminish somewhat the sense of extreme isolation, but without being able to rob the surrounding vastness of even a square meter of its omnipresent emptiness.
The girl-flutiste is marvellous!!❤🎶And this symphony in his extremities too, marvellous! For me at first cryptic, not so like 5, 7, 8, 9, 10. But now... !!!💜💙
@@stilichobias No. I’m a classical musician and have had my share of professional setbacks bc people treated me like a girl rather than a young adult like my male colleagues. Sofia is very young for someone with such skill and artistry- so why don’t we celebrate that by calling her what she is: a (young) woman, not a “girl.” A girl is a child.
I'd worry less about @ejd5261 and focus on the real Frances in this story. This is because, anecdotally, it has been said that on the very day that this recording was made, Sofia witnessed several of her fellow musicians ogling her flute case and handbag, and then turned her "if eyes could kill" towards them like surgical lasers, and told them in no uncertain tone ...... "if any of you guys touch my stuff ..... I'll kill you!” @@stilichobias
I am discovering Shostakovich through these wonderful performances, and have purchased the set of No. 4, 5 and 6. The music played in the title page is haunting me, can someone please tell me which work this is from ??
It is the second movement , Allegro, from symphony n. 10 in E minor, op. 93. It seems that Shostakovich would express and represent by it a satyrical image of the dictator Stalin, violent and quick music and ironical as well.
Larry Davis, I would like your impression of the thorny #4. I have come to terms with it, but the final bars are chilling! Not to be heard in a,dark room.
Interesting to hear this symphony being played under the baton of a conductor who decided join the group of people whom the composer absolutely despised.
You are late for 9 years - now she looks 2 levels down from what she did here. My love is a blonde who plays in viola group ( not in this record ). UPD : she is a violonist, not viola player , her name is Ekaterina Gribanova
For years, the conductor Valery Gergiev, Russia’s most powerful classical musician, avidly embraced Vladimir Putin and suffered nothing for it. Notwithstanding a notorious campaign ad in which Gergiev praised Putin’s capacity to instill fear; notwithstanding the conductor’s crude propaganda concerts in the former war zones of South Ossetia and Syria; notwithstanding his endorsement of the annexation of Crimea, his photo opportunities with generals and admirals, his disdainful replies to questions about anti-gay laws in Russia-his international career barrelled ahead.
For many years, a huge number of American and European musicians and artists supported the unprovoked invasions of Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yugoslavia, the war in Israel, dozens of changes in political regimes in many countries of the world and the colonialist policies of these countries in Africa. Please keep your double standards to yourself.
