This definitely was an unintended longer video, for that, my apologies but I do ramble on when having a good day in the radio shack, good health days should never be taken for granted, and I'm not going to waste a minute, thats for sure.
ACMA, firstly, even though prompted for proof for over 4 years by many who are far from fans of mine, I didnt feel the need to disclose much of what happened in 2020. All I'm prepared to say outside of the contents of my video is that ACMA have a job to do, they were fair with me and I was not legally squeaky clean based on type approval laws in Australia but after a lot of discussion, it was clear to me that they were not interested in long drawn out litigation of defining the current Radcomm act. ACMA's goal was education of the act and boundaries which under that same current act actually exist. Education was the key to making changes here to ensure we met the requirements especially in the understanding of type approval and its limitations on radios we had on the shelf even just for display. If you have any interaction with ACMA, definitely don't think the worst, life will go on and it wont be like a drug raid, no one busts doors down, quite often they really are just looking to educate vs prosecute. My final advice, keep a cool head and find a mutual pathway forward, they are not the bad guys that they are sometimes painted out to be. In the end I believe ACMA inspectors want the well adjusted, well rounded, happy radio community we all want, and in my experience, its entirely possible.
OK, Hygain 2795, does it meet type approval here in Australia, unfortunately not, can you own the 2795 legally, yes, however usage is limited to receive in Australia and ACMA may possibly require you to hold a Scientific license, so make enquiries with ACMA if your building a collection of radios and need to understand your outcome if an inspection were to occur. I believe radios like this Hygain 2795 especially in this very uniquely beautiful condition should never be destroyed due to legislation possibly requiring it without the correct license to display/use(dummy load with scientific licence is one possible suggestion to demonstrate legally). These radios represent an era that is long gone, but what an era it was, never to forgotten with movies like Smokey and the Bandit and Convoy, I still smile hearing the theme songs knowing I was a part of the huge CB Community here in Australia, and arguably, it led to a career in Electronics for over 45 years, so far...
Whether its your 40ch Cobra AM set or your President Madison Base with all the bells and whistles, collectors will always be the custodians of our beautiful history and even ACMA have made it clear to me that this type of collecting is definitely something they want to support, but legally is the key.
