Spitfire pilot Peter During was shot down behind enemy lines and convinced his German captors to become his prisoners.
I did this interview in Cape Town at Peter's house in January 2013.
Thanks Peter for this interview!

My father was a Medic in WWII. Towards the end of the war when it was pretty clear that the war was coming to an end with a German defeat, my dad found a German soldier on the battlefield left for dead. His leg had been blown off and he was barely conscious. My dad stabilized him and began talking to him. The man had relatives in the US and told my dad that his dream was to move to Florida and buy an orange grove. My dad happened to have a few oranges from a care package his own father had sent to him, and he wrapped them up and gave them to the German before the German was officially taken prisoner. Before my dad moved on, the man asked for my dad’s name. My dad thought there was no harm in sharing his name and the fact that he lived in Queens, NY. Five years later, after i was born, a crate of oranges arrived at our house in NY --attached to it was a note that said “Jerry (my father’s name), i made it! Thanks for the oranges.” The man had made it, and made it to Florida and did buy an orange grove farm. They became great friends, and on the day the man died, my father had a premonition and called the man’s wife. The wife said that one of the last things the man said was to “call Jerry and thank him again....tell him i had a great life and he made it possible”. A little humanity goes a long way. Given a chance, we should all treat each other as just another human being trying to survive and live a decent life. There are some evil people in the world, but not many, and most people, wherever they are, are decent and, given a chance, kind. Just wanted to share a story that still brings tears to my eyes.

I had an Uncle who arrived in France two months before the war ended. He said his unit (British Army) was advancing so fast there were times some guys couldn't keep up. Eventually, he found himself alone near a French town and was trying to figure out where he was when he heard a noise in a hedgerow. He said he walked towards the sound with his rifle ready, when all of a sudden he's face to face with a German soldier, and they were both so startled they both actually jumped and screamed. He said they both just stood there staring at each other for what he said felt like minutes until the German finally started to put his gun down. and started to smile at him. He said the German spoke really good English and told him he was lost. Turned out the German had been a primary school teacher who taught 8-year-old kids and had no mind for fighting. My Uncle said it was always a wonderful coincidence because he also was a teacher and felt they shared a special bond that way. My Uncle said it took them both three days of wandering around the countryside looking for food avoiding German soldiers and finally ended up meeting a group of American's who took the German as a prisoner and helped my Uncle get back to a British unit. He said that just before they met the American's the German soldier made him promise that they wouldn't tell anyone they both jumped and screamed like two silly school boys. Anyway, he always told that story a lot better than I could, and as kids, we use to love hearing it and getting such a laugh from it. Also, in about 1965, my Uncle finally got a chance to go to Germany and meet up with the German man who had gone back to teaching school. They remained good friends and kept in touch with each other until their passing. Sadly, my Uncle and his wife never had children, so I don't know whatever happened in the details of their friendship. Anyway, I thought I'd share that story, hope it's ok.

They were both human both men both in war time and both soldiers. Both at the same time in the same place. Both strangers and both the enemie, both afraid, startled by each other and far from home. Then they both smiled to each other and were both relieved, they both liked each other and thereafter survived together, both been teachers and both happy to have found each other. And they both stayed friends long after the war until they got old until the end of both...

My grandfather, who is Scottish, fought the full length of the war. He said that they didn't like the German soldiers, but they respected them. He gets very angry if anyone calls them Nazis, because as he said, 'they weren't Nazis, they were just common soldiers, like us'.
@ltcajh
@ltcajh 8 лет назад
+BruceT We westerners think that way, as individuals, and not about people groups. The Nazi military fought for the Fuhrer- it doesn't matter what they were individually. They were representatives of the Fuhrer they fought for, and not like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor who actively resisted the Nazis. You go along, and you are a Nazi.

I was in the war, and my boss was President George Bush. Didn't matter who I was, or what I thought- he was my boss, and I was there as an American GI. Germans who opposed Hitler, like Pastor Boenhoeffer, were killed.

What a great story. It reminds me of my grandfathers story of fighting the Germans all day and all night each taking heavy casualties. The next morning early hours his platoon was on one ridge when they crossed paths with the German division on the other side. Both within shooting range. Both armies looked at one another in disbelief and then waved to one another and proceeded to go their seperate paths without firing a shot. It was a mutual respect of fighting me no matter the nationality.

Pete During served in the 7th Squadron South African Air Force in North Italy in late 1944-1945. They were flying Spitifire Mk.IX fighter aircraft in ground support of Canadian operations. My late father-in-law, Arnold "Bassie" Basson, flew in the same squadron at the time and was also shot down by the fierce ground fire. I have his flight log for this period, and it bears the following entry on 26 April 1945: "Cabrank Rover Jack. Pete During shot down behind lines but came back 4 days later with 4 Jerries & loot. Bombed village of Masi on N Bank of Adige. D/H’s on 3 buildings, 3 fires started. Hacked 1 semi track flamer - Led by Maj Brebner" The entry for the 22nd of April states, "Armed recce from Estiglia on the Po to N of Ferrara. Bags of M/T S of Po Nil North. Bombed some H.D.I’s 1 damaged Bod in slit trench. Bombed V.H.H Led by Pete Potter. Clueless sortie rained bombs on us while we were straffing" . This is very likely the recce on which Pete During went down. As folks can see, honourable opponents of the Germans did not call them "Nazis". These were fighting men who had earned the respect of one another. It would be ever so much better if the makers of trite TV programmes could show half the respect these men had for one another. Unfortunately, as is always the case with those who were not there, they have big mouths and make derogatory comments. Bassie told me personally that a German Me262 jet pilot, instead of shooting him down, moved in next to him, tipped his wing and showed him "thumbs up", and flew off. It made him feel as though his Spitfire was standing still in the air. These were proper men; not ignorant children attaching derogatory epithets to their respected enemy. Bassie's plane was struck by 40mm anti-aircraft fire on 3 January 1945 near San Alberto, exploding the ammo box in his wing and jamming his aileron. He also had a huge gaping hole in this starboard wing. His 'plane was forced into flying in circles through the German anti-aircraft fire. He eventually figured out how to turn that into a spiral path and made his way to Bertinore, where he baled out, narrowly missing the power lines and hurting his back for life on landing. His flying boot had got stuck in the cockpit, so he jumped shoeless. The next day he was in the air again. The entry for 30 April states: "Basil Guest comes back after being POW. Jerry let him go as they could not take him with them in their retreat." Guest had been shot down on 20 April.

This story shows that the madness of a war is only ever initiated by a few idiots and that millions of innocent people unintentionally fight each other and ultimately die. My grandfather, who fought in VerdunWWI and later my father, who was a soldier in Stalingrad and was able to return home in 1949, told me about similar occurrences in WWI - II. Both had always spoken with great respect about the opposing soldiers. Both of them had repeatedly shown us children the horrors of war and made it clear that war is and can never be a solution.

My dad's cousin has an interview on the web. He spoke about his time in the "Battle of the Bulge". He wandered into an Inn looking for food. There were a bunch of German soldiers there. He shouted at them and they all gave up! He told them that he couldn't take them, but told them to walk a few miles down the road to surrender to the guys at the main force. At the very end of the war he said they came to an agreement with a bunch of German S.S. soldiers. He said they were very proud. It took them a couple of days as they had to formally ask each S.S. soldier to give up their weapons before they would hand them over.

Adrian Larkins War is fought by nations and the leaders military commanders of opposing sides bear the brunt. The painful reality in every conflict is that civilians n ordinary combat soldiers have to the pay the price with their lives while leaders stay safe unless the defeated side (nation) surrenders or gives up hope or will to fight n carry on. This is one such story from the last months n days of WWII. Many people don't know this but Field Marshall Erwin Romell treated Allied prisoners very well during WWII. But same thing cannot be said about the UBOAT crews. They were insane. While Das Boot shows the good side of U-96 crew U571 movie clearly show bad side as Hitler gave strict instructions to U Boat crews not to take allied civilan or allied naval Pows.

That shows how right Pete was. He was taken by members of the Herman Goring Brigade (or whatever they called it) and got good treatment. If he had been taken by the SS unit down the way, he might have been summarily shot as he said. In Mark's case he probably had soldiers of the Heer, the regular German Army. If they had been SS they might have killed him. Although..... late in the war some SS probably threw away their SS uniform flashes and tried to lose themselves among all the regular army soldiers ready to give up.

My uncle, too, had fought the Germans during WW2 (he being half German at that), serving with the artillery in the MN Red Bulls, from Africa (invasion, Kasserine Pass), into Italy (Monte Cassino, Salerno, Anzio), then on into Germany -- five years in all. However, during my extensive interview with him, and which I had filmed the year before died (in '99), he said nothing derogatory at all about the Germans, even though he came close to dying when one of his own guns exploded (a Howitzer), and (twice) from an incoming German '88. Even later still he survived stepping on a German landmine at war's conclusion. To date no purple heart has ever been awarded to Sgt. Lewis A. J. Witte. So now in 2018, RIP uncle, from your loving nephew (and fellow veteran) Bill.

my dad was in the pacific theater of ww2. he was in guam after it had been 'secured,' anyway, the soldiers would have outdoor movies and some of the natives would tag along and watch. my dad was quartermaster depot non-com and had access to a big supply of candy. he would always give out some to who he thought were the island villagers. well, the brass can say that something is secure, but really isn't. japanese soldiers were still about and needed to be captured or killed. a small group of them surrendered and two of them kept pointing to my dad, saying 'good man, good man.' turns out that those enemy soldiers were coming down and watching movies and getting fed by my dad. he didn't want to kill anyone, he had been a college kid, playing baseball at ucla when the war started, went to work at douglass aircraft and finally had to go in when his deferment ran out. they treated the japanese well, and it was just another story of basic humanity.....

My father was 13 when he joined the US Army after Gen. McArthur returned to the Philippines. He lied about his age to get accepted. He was the tiniest one in his unit and the American GIs treated him more like a little brother or a camp mascot. He would at times regale me about his war experiences. Once, I asked him how many Japanese soldiers he killed. He stopped talking and, with a faraway look and glazed eyes, he just walked away. I never asked him that question ever again. Because, you see, he regarded the Japanese soldiers as friends who saved his life once from an angry mob that was about to execute him, and who saved his father from a guerilla ambush. The Japanese treated my father's family with respect and honor. And it was only because the guerillas threatened to kill his family that my father was forced to join the US Army near the end of the war at such a young age. Although he became a Sargeant and an expert machine gunner, he made sure to shoot above the enemies' heads; and he was always the last to attack and the first to retreat. The funny thing about my father was that he spoke fluent Japanese and looked Japanese! Honestly, there were times when I would entertain the possibility that he was a Japanese war straggler in disguise!

This man's story makes me think of my past 20 career in the US Army and how everyone now thinks I must be a complete war loving hawk when it comes to fighting and war. Having, myself, been stationed in both Japan (3 years) and Germany (6 years) nothing could be further from the truth as while in those places I traveled about, learned (pretty fluently) the language, met many people and made many friends. What I realized was that IN WAR, the big politicos and the elite are typically NOT who does the fighting and dying on EITHER SIDE----IT IS THE COMMON MAN, MOSTLY---people just like you and me who are, really, not too excited to go out and fight for "their country" (as we are all propagandized and led to believe and ESPECIALLY not inclined to kill men just like ourselves or do be killed along with our buddies in SOMEONE ELSE'S war. I DO, however, understand that in some situations war is a last resort and is sometimes the only possible way, SADLY, to settle things and go forward into the future. A PRIME example is that NOW BOTH the Germans and the Japanese are our friends and allies----Who would have even in their wildest dreams imagined THAT in about 1943 or 1944???

As a German I know well the mindset of my people and I know well that most Germans are very different to all the stories of propaganda we hear as long as I live. It was strange to realize that most people are lying about my people and that it was forbidden to say something good about German soldiers - I found out were and how my grandfather (who was opposing the National soialists) died - he was a hero and gave his life for others. It has been dfficult for me to bear all the stories about my country and the dark picture painted so very passionately. i learnt from all the stories behind the curtain that my people were more honourable in warfare than their opponents and wondered why nobody was daring to tell the truth. Nowadays I know better and I understand what "Good and Bad" really are - they are interpretations of people who see themselves as "Good" - they urgently need the "Bad" ones and that is why they need to blame others for their own darkness.

Peace to you Straub Ottmar. My Mother was German, but born in America. My German Grandfather came back to Germany from America because he loved his country and people. He never liked Hitler but he couldn't betray his country. He was a German diplomat and a WW1 hero with an Iron Cross, and did what he could to stop Hitler and end the war. After 1943 he had to hide from the Gestapo in Italy. My German mother was a young girl hiding in the mountains of Austria in a village near a lake. They listened to the BBC, she told me all the young German soldiers wanted to fight with Rommel in Africa, if possible. Rommel was deeply admired. She said, the German people went war because they had been badly mistreated with debt and poverty after WW1 and we're afraid of Stalin and mass murdering Communists so close in the East. I am half German and know in my small American and German family it is a very painful memory of what Hitler and Stalin did to their own good people, especially my Mother's family and friends who all died in the war. Fighting bravely for a mad man against another mad man.

Thank you very much, brother for your words - yes it is healing to hear different stories - it is so very crazy what happened to Germany and nobody seemed to be interested in truth - most people are fully ignorant in terms of such things like "Good and Bad" and project their own darkness onto others - if you are very brave watch the documentary "Hellstorm" in which you can see much about the real story - my own people got manipulated deeply into self-hatred despite of the fact that Germany acted usually very honourable throughout history with the exemption of 33 - 45 which was kind of reaction to the treatment Germany experienced after having lost WW 1 and throughout many hundreds of years - raping and killing came again and again and in one war Germany lost 35 % of its population - only who knows history understands what is going on. Thank you once more - it is good to write about without knowing that you will meet much hatred talking about the truth - especially in anglo-saxon countries history gets very twisted and myths get spread about military, democracy and Good and Bad - you know that for sure - be well and all the best Lorenzo

Straub Ottmar, while I appreciate the terrible stress that the German people went through after the First World War, the fact remains that in their desperation they voted for a murdering thug who had made it quite clear what he intended to a "race" of humans. I agree that the majority of people in any country are decent people, but once any people allows a madman to get power over them, they are lost, their souls are lost, and their reputation is lost for many years. The German military is also partly to blame, in my opinion, because they knew that the military had lost the war and forced the Kaiser to abdicate, and yet, they remained silent as to this fact. And, what about going back to the Kaiser himself, another madman who believed in the power of the sword. But, I hear you saying, why should the French and British escape blame for their onerous terms of peace? There is some truth in this, but I tell you that they did not start either war of aggression but instead suffered. No, I am afraid that like with all citizens, the German populace bears a huge responsibility. But wouldn't it be great if we could take power away from the "rulers" and say to them, You go fight the war, we won't. That would stop trouble. Afraid it's just wishful thinking. My father fought in Europe for the Americans and he never spoke a bad word about Germans. In fact, my mother was German Russian immigrant. It was practically like fighting against your own family. Peace

A good friend of ours has a German mother who was born in Berlin. Her father was denounced by other Germans as he was hiding and didn't want to fight. He was shot. When Berlin was over run, the mother was repeatedly raped by the Russians. War is hell and civilians suffer as much if not more. I'm English, but my ancestors came from Germany in the 1890's. Most of the servicemen were just that, serving their Country. However, the Allied forces dealt with their conscientious objectors differently, generally putting them in prison. German objectors were shot.

Bravo Mr. le Roux! Unglaublich, as they would say in German, but it really did happen. So many worthy stories from WW2. What do the present generations have to say for themselves. Let us pray & hope that we can rise to the courage & goodness of those who came before us.! FD, Bethesda Maryland USA

The expression"alles zal recht komen als elkeen zijn plicht doet" was uttered by President Brand. He was a South African lawyer and politician, and the fourth state president of the Orange Free State. Roughly translated to mean:"all will be well if everyone does his duty"

Dank Peet, you are right. It was President Brandt who said:- ``Alles sal reg kom as ons almal ons plig doen``. Ik heb weer wat geleerd. (:)

This was the best war story I've ever heard: party animals work out their own peace.
