Thank you for this review. I've been debating between a few and decided to settle on Shotcut. I'm a total beginner and only need to make simple edits but it sounds like Shotcut can give me the depth I need if I feel like exploring more options but still retains an entry-level feel to it.

There's inherent advantages that free and open source video editors have over proprietary software like Davinci Resolve. First, on the "free" version of Resolve you can't export higher resolutions than UHD 4K (3840x2160). So no DCI 4K (4096x2160). Second, free and open source can pretty much accept any file container and codec unlike Resolve because even in the paid version of Resolve it will not accept any files that are in mkv and avi containers. Third, on the Linux free version of Resolve it has the additional limitation of not excepting files encoded in H.264.

The main advantage of Shotcut is that you don't need a powerful PC for it. It takes less than 400 MB of RAM when I load a 15-minute video in it. When Da Vinci takes more than 4 GB of RAM with the same video! So you basically can't use Da Vinchi on an 8 GB PC. I just found out about Shotcut, and I am loving it. I switched to it from Magix Movie Maker. Just 30 minutes of RU-vid videos and I got used to Shotcut editing flow.

Shotcut is a fantastic video editor especially for quick projects and that's true for Davinci definitely more resource heavy but it does have many benefits for those needing the extra features.

Edited 4k60 video made on DJI drone both on Shotcut and Resolve (similar output settings, only color grading). The result out of Shotcut was awful, all the smoothness of 60fps was gone, while Resolve managed to keep it intact. Couldn't find any explanation or similar reports on the internet. Any thoughts?

I’d say I’m just getting to that intermediate level and i am ready to upgrade my software. Ive mainly been using windows movie maker and have quickly learned openshot. I would stick to openshot but i find it to be buggy and lacks certain features that are important to me (a main one; being able to see the frames of my video to make cutting easier). I’m not sure if i should use davinci next bc it’s definitely more on the advanced level and is a big software (which I’m not sure how well it’ll do on my laptop). I do want to go pro editing but at the same time I’m not sure if i should try a simpler software like shotcut first or go straight to davinci to avoid constant switching software...

I'm very proficient in Shotcut but have been advised to check into Resolve for system performance reasons. Would my Shotcut experience carry over or would I be having to learn a completely unfamiliar editor from scratch? My main concern is the time investment needed in learning Resolve while keeping my content flowing.

I'd give all those others a try since they're free and at least for Shotcut, Kdenlive, you have the option to use Proxy clips. You can check out my Shotcut, Kdenlive playlists for more info or see links below. And if all those don't work, then upgrade hardware when you can - I don't have specific recommendations but I'd say any new laptop/PC will have better specs. DaVinci Resolve takes an i7 processor apparently, so I seriously doubt it would work with 4gb ram. Could you say something about how shotcut is too low quality tho? Just a question about how they differ regarding resources? Which is least and most sluggish on ordinary laptops as opposed to ones with high performance capabilities. This might have a bearing to new comers who have already got medium performance computers and can't afford to upgrade.
@GeekoutdoorsBrand
@GeekoutdoorsBrand 4 года назад
I'd say for most projects, Shotcut and Kdenlive work great on lower end machines. Davinci Resolve does require more but it also has more advanced proxy clips, render cache for improved performance. And Openshot isn't currently the best optimized so you might encounter more performance issues there.

Unfortunately the free version of Davinci doesn't support H.264 & H.265 on Linux which renders it unusable for most users on this platform. I won't waste any more time or disk space converting formats to open on Davinci.
