The problem with this debate is that everyone involved has their own definition of what "Secularism" is.

For me the most general definition of "Secularism" is that the country does not endorse any religion, that is all. Any other actions such as banning the burka, is dependent of the society leanings and world events of that time. Even if the country was non-secular like it endorse christianity, if there was a fear of islam among the public I am pretty sure the burka would be ban at schools too. All the people in support of non-secular country assume their religion would be the state religion, like for the pastor if for whatever reason Islam/Hindu/Buddhism was the country's official religion, would he still support for non-secular country.

As an american this is such a strange issue to see the U.K. argue. America is a secular nation, however America is seemingly more religious than the U.K. The notion that religions (like christianity) in the states are somehow dis-empowered in our secular nation is hilarious. We regularly have to reinforce and defend our public schools rights to teach evolution all across the nation, because it offends fundamentalist religious sensibilities. I just assumed that the U.K. was a secular nation as well. It is so strange to consider the U.K. as a form of theocracy.

Only in the very broadest sense their is no high bishop who can vote down our choice of prime minister or control policy making, the house of lords is a body that reviews, critics and can amends legislation after further debate and is made up mostly of people considered experts in their fields, it can't produce legislation by itself. Yes a few bishops sit on it but in no way do they form any kind of majority. But in our system of government holds that the House of Commons similar to your congress holds the ultimate power and authority in our political system. The reason we have an appointed seconded house instead of elected one. Has i think more to do with the fear of getting caught out in having problems like US has in passing budgets recently where you have two houses both elected in deadlock, as an example. Plus it means that the courts only enforce the law as it is decide by parliament. If we had an elected 2nd house that could claim power over the decisions of parliament we would have to add a 3rd legislative body in the form of a beefed up Judiciary to weigh the balance and make final decisions in conflict between the two. no one here wants a Judge whose job in our system is simply to enforce the laws as set by parliament and the House of Commons. To have that kind of power to influence the make up of our laws its out of there remit. And then it makes the appointing of judges especially for things like the supreme or high courts way to much of a political appointment.

It is ironic, isn't it? Unlike the USA, we have no separation of church and state, we have a state religion, and the head of state is also head of the English church. Net result: Christianity is almost universally ignored. America has no state religion, and has a separation of church and state. Net result: religion infects almost all areas of public life.

The Declaration of Independence is not a legal document, it is a public statement, the preamble is part of the Declaration, not the Constitution. The CONSTITUTION is a legal document, it is the highest legal document in the land - and it prohibits the government from any involvement with any religious institution. The constitution’s only mention of religion is the explicit SEPARATION of itself from it. The Government of the United States is a secular government, it is founded in a separation between church and state, as you said . England, for example, is truly a ‘Christian country’ - it’s monarch is the head of the church and the state. The quakers have nothing to do with government, and neither does Christianity . As an American, it's strange (yet refreshing) to hear Europeans call the US a secular state. There are so many Christians here that wish to establish a Christian theocracy it's disgusting. The separation of church and state here is a very thin line to walk. The religious in the States wish to ignore the line altogether. Religious Americans constantly claim our founding fathers were Christians when they mostly were clearly deists. Furthermore, the Declaration of Independence is not a legal document. The US Constitution, on which we base our laws, does not include any particular religious creed or teaching and namely includes strictures AGAINST the State establishing any religion. So, on paper the US is a secular state, but the religious right in America refuses to accept that.

All nations should be secular, no religious organization should be in a position to dictate their religious ideology on others. In order to truly preserve a person's religious rights is to allow them the freedom to choose what religion if any they wish to follow, and you truly can't have that if how the government conducts its governing and its law making is dictated by a religious theology. Secularism, if structured properly from the outset, not only protects people from religion, but also protects a persons right to practice the religion of their choice, provided that their religious practices do not infringe on any of the rights of anyone else and doesn't break any established laws. Yes, I'm an atheist, and although I will fight against any religious decrees, principles, doctrine, dogmatic proclamations, etc., forcibly put upon me through legislation, I will defend any person's right to practice the religion of their choice. The larger problem at play is determining whether the women actually do choose to wear the burqa or not. It's like asking women in the nineteenth century if they want to receive an education and go to work. I'd say that most of them would say that they wouldn't, but is that really their own choice? Many women in Islamic areas have no choice but to wear the burqa or else be censured, beaten or killed. That's no choice at all.

It is important to use accurate terminology. Racism does not apply to Muslims. There is no Muslim race. A Muslim is a follower of the Islamic religion and can be of any race. Covering is not mandated by Qu'ran. Since covering is optional, it becomes a political manuever to give one particular faith a louder voice than other faiths in the secular arena.

Agreed but being anti Islam and anti religion (I am both) is not an excuse to go after random brown people that "look Muslim". Racism is often a part of it. We know Muslim isn't an ethnicity. It's silly to ignore the racial aspects of islamophobia. Yes I understand that being anti religion is not a phobia but when I say islamophobia I'm talking about people that want to persecute all Muslims, South Asians, Middle Eastern people etc and lump in all sects of Islam with the terrorist ones. You can't just ban one religion you have to get to the root of all religion. Its a problem because religions are all about teaching falsehoods and teaching people that faith is a virtue instead of fact.

That Bishop (alongside Mark whose appearance in these things always makes my eyes roll) came up with some of the most inane and infuriating arguments. Let's put aside the whole Stalinism thing for now, because it's such an overused thing on a part of the religious, but his argument that "secularists are late comers to this issue" is idiotic on a massive scale. It's barely even an argument. People's thinking changes over time, and I doubt there were much in the way of minority groups who had any say back when the Bishop is saying the Church started up schools. They were pretty much the only game in town. Now Britain is filled with differing groups of people with different cultures and beliefs (or non-belief), and some people come along with a way of integrating everyone and removing any kind of advantage or disadvantage for any one of them. But we shouldn't listen to them because they're "late comers". If we took something like that on board we wouldn't get anywhere. We'd stick with the stuffy, archaic ideas of yesterday and never make any progress because anyone with new ideas would be denounced as "late comers".

Certain Americans are fond of citing the Declaration of Independence as the foundation of the United States. It is not. Some of those same citizens are also fond of holding religious belief as a higher obligation than U.S. citizenship. The Declaration was merely a justificaton for rebellion. It was aimed at the world powers in hope of gaining support, (preferably military or financial support). It is the United States Constitution that is the fundamental document. It is a system of checks and balances, including separation of church and state. For that reason, God was very purposefully not mentioned in the constitution.

Faith schools belong to a faith. They are not the responsibility or obligation of an integrated society. There are some faiths that discard current practical knowlege in preference to religious dogma. This runs counter to a child's right to a solid practical education which is very much the concern of a responsible nation.
