No . the reason is the money would come from those least able to pay it in the UK, and it would finish up in the pockets of the already wealthy who are promoting reoperations payments.
This is a nonsensical analogy. Italy != the Roman empire. It doesn't even resemble it. Whereas the same British empire, that invaded & enslaved dark skinned people is in terms of governmental structures still pretty much the same as the United Kingdom. In order for your analogy to work the UK has to break up and form a new country without the ruling elite of the current one. Aka remove the British royals from power.
No. I'd like to understand the argument as to why other civilisations, which took millions from Africa, but purposely ensured they wouldn't have descendants (meaning no large diaspora of Africans in those former colonial states, unlike the Americas) and also colonised vast areas of the African continent leading to substantially changes to the demographics makeup of those areas, aren't included in this discussion.
Nobody needs to ask what kind of person you are. I am from the Caribbean and I don't advocate for reparations for slavery or colonialism. But I suggest you research neo-colonialism. Your lot never truly let us go!
That's not true. The people selling slaves were not the same people as the slaves. You think they are the same people because they have the same colour skin? It doesn't work like that.
@@burgeggegg1733 "They quite literally sold either their own slaves or people from other tribes to the British" I think you missed "or people from other tribes", and I don´t see how that makes it any better. Also who would you pay the compensation to? The African states today often have little to do with the political entities that existed back then. You could ironically end up paying compensation to people who captured slaves for the British.
The slaves didn't sell slaves. If anything, their rulers did. Just because they had the same skin colour, they weren't a monolith. Would you say that the British poor locked themselves into debt prison, or would you acknowledge that it was a policy set by the ruling classes. In no other circumstance, the standard you're proposing is applied.
@@carpediem5232 I don't think I said the slaves sold slaves at any point and if we did pay compensation to African states, ironically It might go to people Who captured slaves to sell them to the British and French
@@subcitizen2012 Seems we need to make people at school properly educated, the British ended slavery and already paid reparations. Solves the problem of ignorance.
No one these days would do anything but condemn slavery. But we cannot pay our way out of history - and how far back would one take this? The sins of the world are many and legion and still ongoing. Can money ever expiate them? There is no way of scrubbing clean the pages of the past by applying money.
@@TheAArmstrong ohhhhhhhhh no it won’t ! Besides which, it Doesn’t matter what YOU say. If the government decides to pay, you’ll have no choice, sunshine! 🤣
Why should I pay reparations from my tax? Maybe I can claim reparations from Germany for the generational damage World War Two did to my family? Britain should be proud of its empire not shameful at some of the negative parts conducted by elements of the ex empire. Britain ended slavery at great expense decades before other nations. The USA clung to slavery a long time after they Brits abolished it. Try banging on the door of the White House for reparations.
@@markac8 who says it would come from taxation? My understanding is the majority of slaves were owned by private individuals, many descendants of whom still sit on piles of cash today. I doubt you could trace everything, but it’s not really a secret who owned them and who inherited from those owners. Britain should definitely not be proud of its empire at all. If Britain were conquered today, would you congratulate the conquerors? Odd
This was dealt with in 1840 at a rate that by today’s standards would bankrupt the country. We’ve already been through this James centuries ago! Keep up! 😂

Then once the cold war ended it was the IMF that came with much needed funds which these nations accepted under strict neo liberal rules that just made these nations poorer.

Im so over James, its so boring and childish the way he insults everyone with a different opinion to him. As far as i am concerned James will change his opinion to suit the socially acceptable viewpoints that enable him to bully amd belittle others. Thats why early in his career his opinion was the opposite to what it is today, its not because he has grown as a person, its because the old points no longer allow him to belittle others so he can feel morally superior. Fyi i came on board as a new listener during Brexit but i literally now have to turn him off. I keep giving him another chance but every show its the same belittling attitude 🙄
It seems your ideas are the ones in vogue. If he wants your social acceptance, than why doesn't he capitulate to your majoritarian ideas of not doing anything for anyone? He says he's grown as a person, so why not let him speak for himself? Seems like you have an issue with telling people how to think. If you don't want to be belittled, then get some bigger beliefs. It's not that hard, not rocket science, you just need to develop as a person and wander yourself into some information that will boost your IQ. Everything you're whining about is your own choice, just like a brexiter.
1000% false. If J'O'B were just going with the most popular opinion he wouldn't be telling you how Israel is repeating 1940's Germany every week. But he is a moral person who will say unpopular things because they're true, so he does.
We need to consider the experience of the masses at the time of slavery. A tiny percentage of people with the right to vote. 5 year olds sent up chimneys. Day workers trampled to death seeking dock works. Should their descendents receive reparations? All from the descendents of the few. When do I get my money?
Imagine you applied this logic to every situation you encountered in life. "Oh you're going to give that dying man CPR?!? Really? Don't you know there's millions of people dying in Africa so you helping this specific guy right now is actually somehow bad!?" "Oh you're going to pay out a class action lawsuit to thousands of people who were hurt by a company, don't you know that lots of other people were hurt by a different company too! Everyone knows you can either fix every problem simultaneously, or no problems at all!"
Romans and vikings don’t exist anymore, the British crown and wealth from empire is in tact and the families who profited from it are still wealthy today. If Caribbeans and their decedents (20m people) were paid out the equivalent of what 3,000 slavers received in reparations, we’re talking £60,000 a head. The longer it goes on the bigger the bill.

In 2022, India overtook the U.K. to become the 5th richest country in the world. Furthermore, if you educate yourself, you’re realise that India is the second largest source of Foreign Direct Investment in the UK. This country does not pay for India’s space program. Furthermore, it’s this country that goes to India with its begging bowl.

UK looted $45-60 trillion worth of wealth from INDIA. UK sending money to ngo's which do propaganda for them as far as I know UK is still unable to launch any satellite from its soil.
If you sell entire UK still you won't be able to pay 10% of what you looted from INDIA. It was the world's richest country throughout its history before British came.
The british empire isnt something to be proud of.the subjacating of other countries and plundering their resources.and do you think poor and working class people benefitted from the british empire.cos i think not.the poor had to know their place.
Yes please. As a white british working class peasant my ancestors were no doubt slaves at some point, if not treated worse than slaves through many generations. So give me money please...... Oh im white so it doesnt count... silly me... i thought this was about equality...... silly silly me
I'm not concerned with past slavery and colonialism. I'm concerned with current neo-colonialism. Does your today morality allow neo-colonialism, or should we address that? I am from the Caribbean, by the way, and I bear the name of the Earl of Harewood. My ancestors were obviously forced to work on one of his many plantations. Most of us still live nearby. I think we always knew that we were not entitled to own other human beings. The mere fact that we ourselves would resist being enslaved would have alerted one to the wrongness of it. There are still many who would ignore "today's morality" as they did back then. So I do not accept your argument, but I don't see reparations as being practical. Neo-colonialism though, can be dismantled. If you don't know what it means or how it operates to keep former colonies under the boot of the former colonisers, then Google it or search RU-vid!
Then why arrest criminals? As soon as anyone commits a criminal act, it's in the past. So there you go. Your sound logic right back in your face, with your wincing GW Bush profile icon.
There are still some companies in the UK that treat workers from other countries badly only because those from outside the UK work hard and do everything to make the service better and those from the UK think they will exploit the visitors, unfortunately those times are over, no one will let themselves be humiliated and treated like trash.

About the singing in the shower. It is evolutionary. It's about confined spaces. In the shower you often have your eyes closed and your hearing detects an enclosed space. Your instinct is to make noise to hear the echos, giving you an idea of what was around you. Kind of a very simple sonar. It was useful in caves and in the dark. Qualifications? Made it up
I think the reparation issue deserves discussion, but firstly calculate the amount to be paid and divide it by the number of the population, then as a starter, allow those who feel strongly about this to voluntary pay their contribution……James, you can go first.
Unpopular but obviously demonstrable opinion as to why this matter of reparations is so complex and cannot be narrowed down to pure imperialist intervention and why you can’t discuss the thing in any helpful manner in an hour: CAPITALISM IS THE PROBLEM.

Reparations would open a Pandoras box and then everyone would want a piece of Britain when they don't deserve it. The 'fools' are the ones who have stoked this nonsense over decades, people who think that relentlessly mea culpa'ing will win friends and influence people. It hasn't. It just gives fuel for bad actors to stoke resentment in developing countries. J
@firefox. The Ancient British were never freemen. They had no liberty to lose. They were owned and controlled by their clan -chiefs. I’m no imperialist, but the people of Africa and the Indian subcontinent were in the same condition when the British arrived in force. I’m not saying it was it was fair - but we have to look at the facts. Sadly, we have this urgent need to idealise ( and demonise) people. It’s the weakness of our times.
Of course UK (or perhaps more precisely England?) should deliver reparations and apologies to the countries once occupied by the colonial empire. Of course it was evil because colonialism is always about exploitation in variety of forms, violence, oppression, racism and superiority of one over another etc. Therefore nothing to be proud of. Reparations are of course not necessarily about direct money transfers. They can be about economic help, social assistance, education or healthcare. If being against UK paying reparation begs the question why Germany should have payed reparations for WWll and WWl and why not US paying reparations to Vietnam or Japan or why Israel should pay reparations to Palestinians etc.
In the first hour talks about slavery and in the second hour references Marx. Letter from Marx to Engels "...he shows that the common n... type is only a degeneration of a far higher one."
🤣🤣🤣🤣It’s hilarious that the British public actually believe they’ll have a choice in this matter. If the British government decides to pay reparations, there’s absolutely NOTHING you can do about it. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
It's not just about money, it's also about justice, restoring countries to a level of living through supporting them, with resources. Resources stripped from them, that made them poor in the first place and still keeping them poor. Europe is still benefitting from slavery all over the world. Even refusing to give back African artefacts, that belong to us....I mean...wow!!!!!...The audacity of a decision made by KS, shows his lack of respect for a group of people and his lack of humanity....Yes...they are terrified of the TRUTH!!!!!!!!! Cos the truth will set us free and there is a lot of free thinking people, who know....and see and can't wait for the changes to come....
Reperations for colonialism and slavery would cost the UK trillions...just as much as they stole from their colonies throughout the years and got filthy rich (I mean, a few including the crown). It would be nothing but right and just to push UK and Europe into the poorhouse and have India and others the money they should rightfully have.
Yes we stole it to pay for a council house and lunch food vouchers for the staving kids. Inequality is within all of society. In fact the education system is designed to nurture inequality. Why does anyone want to pass an exam? It is to get ahead and earn a few extra dollars that the man next door. Humanity is unequally and always will be. The negotiations on this should be NO. If they want or they can declare war and we will fight over it.
@chester. The West is already in the poorhouse. All the main bankers are in the Middle East and Far East. Don’t be mislead by the condition of their people.
Do you realize how much money the UK could make if India became a stable and prosperous democracy? Give India $1 trillion and the UK could make back $1000 trillion. There are 1.5 billion people in India. Imagine each one of them will buy a Land Rover. Or a bottle of Whiskey. Of course you need to be smart about it. You don't just give the money. It would be an investment fund, where Indian companies need to apply to. A pro-Western und pro-Democracy leader must be forced.
13:12 maybe think of it less as reparations and more ...paying an over due bill for services rendered .. and as we know britain is an honourable country that always pays what it owes as a matter of principle .. its just not cricket to do other wise is it, it would be... well letting the side down wouldn't it see i can appeal to emotion too :P
