The problem is that F1 drivers are very popular nowadays, their market value is enormous, it's hard to get rid of anyone of them for a seat even when they don't perform well.

If he doesn't get a F1 ride I'd like to see him come to Indycar. Brazilians have a history in the series (they've won more races than any other non-American narionality) but the pipeline seems to have dried up. The only full-time Brazilian in the series this year was Helio Castroneves and he's 47 years old. It sucks that that F2 produces more good drivers than F1 can actually take but that's to the benefit of series like Indycar, WEC, ELMS, IMSA, etc.
@vinnycordeiro
@vinnycordeiro Год назад
There's a cause for that: lack of investment on the base categories. Car racing just became too expensive of a sport for people in a development country, even for the upper classes, so the focus mainly shifted to the Brazilian Stock Car series. It has a star field, with names like Tony Kanaan, Felipe Massa, and Rubens Barrichello racing there, but it isn't a formula series, and is a very different type of racing as well. As a Brazilian, I really, really hope for the day that another driver from here will reach F1 and win titles. Truth is, we got spoiled between the 70s and the 90s, and took the difficulty to reach F1 for granted.

@@vinnycordeiro I figured the expense is why the talent pipeline seems to have dried up. It's getting to damned expensive everywhere and it makes me wonder how much driver talent is being left behind because they can't afford to race. I think the main issue is that teams want the next Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen, they want a generational talent so they either wait around for one or spend millions to try to develop their juniors into one. One thing is clear, Drugovich was better than pourchaire this year, mecacrome screwed pourchaire 3 times, Drugo won the title with 3 races to go (2 features), so mecacrome could literally wipe out all of Drugovichs races remaining and he still wins, also pourchaire in a number of occasions showed he didn't have the mental strength to carry on bad weekends, he also had a bunch of luck too, at imola the safety car screwed Drugovich strategy, at Hungary his team pit him too early, also Drugovich showed a hell of speed, 4 poles while pourchaire didn't it once, even in the circuits that favoured his car, maybe Drugovich isn't a Russel, a verstappen, or a Leclerc, maybe he is in the level of Schumacher (mick of course) and de vries, but this year he was the only driver the showed the speed, the confidence and the experience needed for F1 so he deserves a shot...

It’s his 3rd year in the series in one of the weakest fields we’ve seen in recent memories. He’s had far longer to adjust to the tyre compound than anyone else he’s racing. That’s why he’s not looked at in the same ilk as other champions, it’s taken him too long to do anything against people that have been in the series for less time than him. Indycar gives the winner of the Indy Lights series a million dollars to take to a team and guarantees them a chance for at least three races in the main series the next year (one of which is the Indy 500). EDIT: I saw yesterday that Indycar is now only giving $500,000 to the Indy Lights champ and has removed that reward of guaranteeing 3 race. What a terrible change to make. That reward was responsible for many drivers deciding to give Indy Lights a chance. In fact 2023 was (is?) going to have the largest field in years with around 16 or 17 cars. I suspect the larger fields were a direct result of the rewards on offer. Linus Lundqvist, this year's chanpion, is a really good driver and absolutely deserves a chance at the big series for a few races. F1 is a whole different beast. F2 is like a youth team in Premier League football. Yeah, you can look good in that youth team against other youth players, but there is a higher chance that you will flop than make it when you get to the first team. So why should a team be forced to sign you by FIA law when they clearly are not impressed enough with you to sign you up ASAP? F1 teams are neither blind nor stupid. They have people monitoring the junior formulas week-in week-out. They know who they want or don't want. Just because you want your favorite junior driver to get a seat in F1 does not mean F1 teams should be obligated to sign him up. When a 37-year old Alonso who has lost his enthusiasm and motivation to continue driving in F1 can still annihilate an F2 champion in the same car on his way out of the sport in 2018, you have to question just how reliable the lower championships are in producing good enough drivers. Granted, Alonso is considered by many as one of the GOATs, but still, 37-years old and lost motivation and will to drive by any of the past F1 champions should be enough to match or at least not get destroyed (forget about beating) for an F2 champion if they are to be automatically granted a seat in F1, no? That's why you still cannot just say, "Oh he won F2. He should be automatically granted a seat in F1." Its not that straightforward.

We forget, sometimes, that what matters for young athletes is how much they can improve. If otherwise, US college champs would always reach success in the pro series like NFL or NBA. What makes a good team in any sport is seek, identify, contract and develop them.
@frankbieser
@frankbieser Год назад
Part of the problem with finding seats for young deserving drivers is that the existing big teams are hell bent on making sure the grid size stays fixed to 20 cars. Toto and others claim it's to insure the integrity and sustainability of the sport, but that's clearly nonsense. The sport has continued for decades with teams coming and going. The entrenched teams are trying to insure their own sustainability, not the sports. The teams should never have been allowed a seat in deciding the rules for the sport. They will always attempt to rig the rules in their own favor at the expense of other teams. Bad incentives create bad behavior.
@markgriffiths9377
@markgriffiths9377 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, they're being selfish. The real reason, as we both know, is money. If there are 11-12 teams, then that means slightly less money for each team. Although I think Andretti-Cadillac would add more value to the sport, which could make up for any "dilution" in the prize fund.

The math on Mick Schumacher was easy and no secret: his famous last name brought money from sponsors (esp. German ones) along, which Haas needed badly at the time. Drivers selected for financial reasons rather than for talent should be less of an issue from now on with budget caps (though, in his case, I believe he actually has talent but needs to find the context to show it). I do believe that Drugovich is ready for a seat in F1. His beginnings may not have been as shiny as some, but he's put in the hours and he's grown a lot. And I totally agree that this year's F2 season was a proper fight in the top 5. Those who think it wasn't clearly haven't watched it and just flap their mouths after looking only at the results. The main reason talents from F3 and F2 don't get F1 seats right away is a question of timing in the structural changes F1 is going through: just too few of them, with some still occupied by pay drivers who jumped the line (on their way out soon, hopefully) and some old stars refusing to retire. As much as I love Alonso, he's not "at the peak of his career"---as he likes to repeat suspiciously often---he's well past it. Time to make room for the young. The perfect age for modern F1 is 20-35. Beyond that, your reflexes and reaction times become too slow, and your driving style settles and crystallizes, making you less able to adapt to new cars. Vettel knows it and has bowed out gracefully, proving once again to be the wise man of F1 (also, he might just be done with the FIA's bs, he doesn't even try to hide his feelings about their ineptitude anymore). Jury's still out on Hamilton and Ricciardo, let's give them a couple more years to confirm whether it's just the car. And hopefully, by 2026, we'll also have two more F1 teams i.e. 4 more seats 🤞

I'm not sure why everyone claims he's not that good, and they bring De Vries up as an example of someone who is good, even tho, he won F2 with a less competitive field and also with more then year of previous F2 experience, Drugovich did it with MP Motorsport, not the greatest F2 team in terms of setup etc. Whereas De Vries had the ART number 1 driver seat. De Vries has proven himself to be good with all this, so why is Drugovich, who had a more impressive F2 campaign, considered the lesser?

The 3 years of experience on is side before winning the championship isn't is biggest argument for a shot in f1. I think the car play a role in is final victory, but Felipe was a quick driver this year. Look is teamate to see that the car wasn't the only thing that allow him to win this year

MP hired Daniele Rossi from Prema in 2020, that explains how they improved, but they had many drivers since 2020 and no one was even close to Drugovich level (they had a worse year in 2021 so if it was all on the big staff name it makes no sense). Daniele himself saind many times that they learned together and Drugovich input in the technical side was very important.

The best proposition I heard for promoting f2 champions to f1 was that the fia could finance the driver's f1 salary for the first year (up to a given threshold) to incentivize teams struggling for money to promote them. This doesn't force an f2 champ into f1 directly, but it does however encourage teams to give f2 champs the chance to see what they can do.
