My father moved to Russia and joined their schismatic church. It was a moment of great sadness for me to hear that the man who gave me the true faith has left it. The modernist destruction has shaken him so much. I've begun to research the details of the schism and the relevant theology so that I may convince him to return to the Church. Please pray for him and for me.

The English priest Fr Adrian Fortescue was an expert on Byzantine liturgy and eastern history, and wrote a book "The Eastern Orthodox Church" in 1907. He did a really good job describing the development and venerable beauty of the eastern rites and culture and attitude, and outlined how it was the East who began rejecting papal primacy, and not Rome who began asserting it. The synods, their delegations, patriarchates, outbreaks of heresy, creating schismatical National Churches, having no problem with the Filioque until it became a useful grievance against the Latins, ignoring rightfully appointed bishops, trampling unleavened Hosts, turning over Latin altars, unsanctioned sacking of Constantinople, all sorts of points that leave you with an even handed breakdown of the various major schisms, including bad ideas by the Westerners that lended to ill feelings in the East, none of which justify schism of course. I've lost lots of pals to this trend that lots of people fall for, without knowing the facts, especially in light of the bold faced heresies coming from the Vatican II anti-popes, it makes Eastern "Orthodoxy" look like this bastion of tradition, instead of a means of damnation, which led me to getting a copy of the book, and there are nice summaries after each chapter.

East and West would have all been wrong together if Rome was wrong. Because they all believed the same once, and again, and again after many schisms long before 1054. And even after 1054, schism was healed, East and West believed the same once again as before, then when the representatives of the East went back home the people rejected the healing of schism. So officially it's already been healed as of 1439. You just have people pretending it wasn't. The number of years during which the See of Constantinople was in schism from 323 to Photius's usurpation in 852, if added up, is a formidable one. This is the list: 55 years during the Arian troubles(343-398), 11 years because of St. John Chrysostom's deposition(404-415), 35 years during the Acacian Schism(484-519), 41 years because of Monothelitism(640-681), 61 years because of Iconoclasm(726-787). Altogether 203 years out of 529. And in every one of those cases Constantinople was on the wrong or heretical side; in every one Eastern and Western Christians now agree that Rome was right. It was not the Filioque, unleavened vs leavened bread, or the rights of Ignatius the Patriarch that divided the Christian world, but steadily rising ambition of a diocese. Originally Constantinople was not an Apostolic see, that see was not even a metropolitan see. The main importance of that see grew around the presence of the Emperor and his court. At Chalcedon, in the absence of Papal legates or Western representatives, Canons were composed which exhalted Constantinople, and enlarge it's jurisdiction over all the east. False assertions regarding the reason why Rome had primacy were inserted. John IV the Faster assumed a pompous title that not even the Pope would use and the title was denied his use by the Pope. They gobbled up power wherever they could and expanded their influence to the point of wanting to be considered only second to Rome which of course was ridiculous. And indeed increased their pride to even want to be equal to Rome, and further to want to have just enough of a sense of a national church in order to disobey Rome, but not enough for all the other national churches which would spring up to disobey Constantinople. Russia calling itself 3rd Rome. Will there be a 15th Rome? A 785th Rome? It's just a never ending spiral. When the schism came in the 9th century, it was the Eastern Churches which began to reject the Primacy of the Pope, and not the Pope who began to assert it. The lawful and free election of Ignatius as Patriarch of Constantipole, was announced to and accepted by Rome, and this recognition did not waver. Michael III was a drunken boy who sought nothing but amusement, encouraged by his uncle Bardas. They joined causes with Gregory Asbestas, Metropolitan of Syracuse who for whatever reason was an opponent to Ignatius. After Ignatius refused Holy Communion to Bardas because of his scandalous public sin of incestuously living with his daughter in law Eudokia, they had him exiled and dragged to an island. Which does nothing to change Ignatius' status as Patriarch of Constantipole. Photius who was already well tied to the court and his brother married the aunt of the emperor, suited the usurping needs of the Court and Gregory, and they, pretending the see was vacant, offered it to Photius and had him receive all the orders, and was consecrated Patriarch by suspended and excommunicated Gregory Asbestas.

You know, if the Russian Empire returns, I _may_ be far more tempted, but I won't move to a place unless I have good reason to believe everything is stable and sufficiently prosperous, and is trending towards Catholicism ideally if there is anywhere to move. Да возвращается Российскую Империю!

Moscow wasn't smart enough to draw the border the "right way" half a century ago, so just do it over again? Not like it's ruined the lives of millions and killed thousands. You sound ridiculous.
