I have a 1990 Lexus LS 400 but I bought in 1989 in Fort Worth Texas. I'm currently having it refurbished / restored I guess they made it has 500,000 miles on it because the odometer stopped recording it at 201000 20 years ago at least. Steam engine but recently had to change out the transmission with a refurbished used one. The restoration is mainly for aesthetics. The transmission lasted near 500,000 miles.

Since Lexus was introduced, I have purchased four used Lexus. These cars are the best cars I have ever owned. Currently I have a SC300 and a RX300, both running strong and with very little in repairs needed. The Lexus you looked at can be relied on and driven for many more miles.

I had a Lexus RX300 - biggest money pit and nightmare that I ever had for a vehicle. I only owned it for 6 months and it spent more time in the shop than me driving it. I only put 2k miles on it, and I had to pay $4k in repairs, more than I spent on all my other cars I ever owned combined. Every few weeks the check engine light would come on, and every repair ranged from $500 to $2k. And it still wasn't fixed - the rear struts were bad, the air conditioning didn't work, the timing belt was getting squeaky, and the tires needed to be replaced. I could only sell it for $2500 because there were so many issues with it. I ended up losing $6k on the car.

I bought a 95 LS 400 last March and paid $700 with 196,000 miles. Mine is Ebony/ Teal Green, Dark/Gray Metallic color. I put some exhaust tips, new rims and tires, and tinted windows. Oil change and tune-up. Every thing works, except speedometer needle on gauge cluster. But runs, and performs awesomely. That check engine light is probably from using wrong fuel leading to oxygen sensor and or Catylic converter issues or failure. Only use 92 -94 octane in these high performance engines. I've had offers up to $3000 for my LS. Not selling.

Pretty good video! I bought my 1999 LS400 close to a year ago. Getting very close to the 200K mark, the only real repairs I've had to do was a VVTi oil control valve replacement(on the '98-'00 cars that had the more powerful VVTi engines; about an hour or so DIY and $100-200 depending on where you get the parts) and cleaning/greasing a reluctant sunroof. I'm also getting 30-32mpg on the highway, with about 17-20 city depending if I'm in a ton of stop and go. Overall a very solid car. I had the chance to check out Matt Farah's LS400 last weekend, with a whopping 975K on the clock. It was a little reluctant to start, but otherwise ran very well. The A/C was even ice cold and it felt quite a bit like mine with only 1/5 the mileage. I'd have to say if you take care of your LS400, it'll definitely take care of you!

Right you are. The VVT valve and solenoid are easy to reach. Am sure you checked the filter screen. For people buying one of these cars and the seller mentions this repair, it can be a sign that the oil was not changed frequently enough. Some day you may notice that the stability control light stays on longer than it should. That can happen when the battery has a weak cell. If that happens, replace the battery PROMPTLY to avoid adversely affecting the EMC. Nuts holding the valve covers often loosen with time. If you smell gas under the hood but can't find a leak, it will be just the fuel pulse damper...very simple, cheap replacement. Plugs last a very LONG time. Have never replaced mine. Join the Owners' Club, if you haven't already.

Looking to buying a 2012 Lexus IS 250 as a project car and this video gave me confidence for buying a used Lexus. Also I think that most cars wouldn’t have a bad reputation far as having high mileage if majority of automotive consumers took care of their cars. For example; my coworker brought an infinity Q60 and after around 6 months I asked her if she checked the oil and she said; “nothing sounds wrong why should I?” Long story short, her car died and she blamed the brand and reliability afterwards.

Is it that other manufacturers could make cars that last but they choose not to? I don't understand how Lexus does it. Here's an example: My BMW(s) leak from every part that has liquid in it. Starting around 50k miles valve cover gasket leak. Followed by power steering leak, oil/gas leaking into spark plugs, coolant leak, windshield washer fluid leak. Rear main seal leaking since 80k miles. Water pump, starter and alternator all replaced around 100k miles. It's got 147k miles now. It's almost time for everything to start failing again. It seems like 50-60k miles is the designed failure period. LOL i'm not fixing it. I know things do break even on a Lexus but it's more like a tail lamp or ... that's the only thing I can think off. LOL We (myself and immediate family members) own multiple Lexus, Honda and BMW. BMW could just switch their gaskets to the same spec/standard as Lexus. EDIT: i forgot to mention transmission leak on my BMW.

@@carsthatlast441 I love the BMW but yes it's a high maintenance car. At 150k, the engine (335i, with N54 twin turbo egine) runs strong. The biggest problem I have with the BMW is the oil leaks. Seals and gasket repairs are expensive, in terms of labor. And one can have 200k+ miles on BMW, too. But you'll have to a lot of repairs. The BMW dealer near me charges $200/hr for labor. Lexus dealer probably charge the same. The BMW shop knows me by name. LOL

My navigator blew a heater core hose and radiator (I can do it no problem) rack and pinion? Not really comfortable doing that. And to anyone who doesn't believe me read some forums on these cars. What's the difference in buying a car well known for extremely high reliability with high miles for 2000 dollars, and doing regular maintenance on it (something your supposed to do on EVERY car) than taking on a new car with a monthly car payment, on top of said vehicle depreciating while you own it. Let's see...buy a 2k car, get a couple hundred thousand more out of it if not more...put the money I'm saving from a monthly car payment into a new paint job if needed and any peroidical maintenance needing done on it...heck let's say we go extreme case and you need an engine rebuild or transmission rebuilt..your still spending 2-5k on that on top of the 2k you paid for the purchase of the car, your still spending way less than the car you just financed for the next odd years, on top of depreciation and interest over the loan. People don't get it.

My black 2000 LS 400, which I bought from the original owner back in 2004 with 44K on the odometer, now has 196,000 miles. Only 204,000 miles to go, to reach 400K mi!! 😃 And my car is one of the rarest ones ever made. It has the Air suspension (I put 2 new front air shocks a few years after I bought it, but other than that the air suspension system still works perfectly - touch wood 😃 ), and Nakamichi stereo, HIDs, etc. Oh, and my car has lived in sunny California all its life! The Underside looks practically new!! 😃 As he said, nothing ever breaks on these vehicles. It's possibly the best vehicle ever conceived, engineered and made, on the planet!!!

In Mn that's a $1200 car. I bought my 2003 ES300 with 180000 for $2500. I think I overpaid a bit but it had great records of all maintenance and had every leak fixed. It runs and rides great. Has a small exhaust leak which I will fix. Idles high at first like the car in the video. Best V6 engine you can buy. Averaging 23.5 mpg all around. I will drive it another 100,000 at least.

This car has an interference engine. 95 and older had a non interference engine. Older ones had stainless exhaust. I own a 93 sc400 with the same engine but it’s non interference engine. I own a ls 430 with an interference engine. Has variable timing. Great cars if they have been maintained. Quite and comfortable. You can still find them with less than 200k! If you don’t live in the rust belt or drive a lot, one may last the rest of your life

CarsThatLast I agree. I see early SC400’s and LS400 selling for the same price as 90’s Corollas, it’s crazy! I’m a Toyota nut, I’ve owned them for over 30 years and I have gotten outstanding service from them! I have an 87 Truck with almost 400k on it. All I’ve done to it is one timing chain, new clutch (nephew burned it up trying to pull someone in a snow storm), and a mechanical fuel pump. Engine hasn’t been touched. I can only comment on the older ones, I hear the newer ones aren’t made as well. I don’t know, I can’t wear out my old ones

The engine cleaning job that he did is super suspect. I wont ever buy a car that the engine was just cleaned like that. He was probably trying to hid some oil leak or something else. Always bring a code reader when looking at car. You can get simple ones for less than 20 on amazon. That wobble was most likely the speed sensor issue. That all being said, my Lexus is a 2002 es300 but I have babied mine. Not one leather crack. Everything in it works and drives super smooth. I did have to replace the speakers and rear sub tho.

I just bought a 2000 LS400 a few months ago. I just posted a video on my channel of it reaching 250,000. It runs great..the only thing I had to do is replace the rocker arms in front. It has some engine vibration at about 2000 RPMs and I could feel it a little bit at slower speeds below 50 but at high speed I don't feel it & overall it runs great. I don't know if the engine vibration could be engine mounts, transmission mounts, timing is due I am assuming but I'm keeping this car.. the exhaust smells a little bit and the check engine light went on and right about one of the catalytic converters but I started putting premium gas in and the light went off. That's the only pain, spending money on premium gas

I have five Lexus V8 models. My son drives the 95 LS400. Bought the other 4 after driving the LS 400 and comparing it to our new Hyundai POS disposable leased car. We just drove the LS400 from West Coast to East Coast then from NY to Virgina. Hit every pothole through the Industrial Midwest. Trump is right, very sad to see all the crumbling industrial cities, potholes, and shut down factories. The roads around the Ford plant in Detroit were ironically some of the worst. We saw a few truck loads of new Jeeps heading for the US through Ontario Canada. Ontario roads were better than any we drove. When did they start selling us our “American” cars back? How is it cheaper to make cars there? LS400 did not miss a beat. It will be driving back West soon, and probably another 250,000 miles, if my son decides to keep driving it. He talks about keeping it garaged and not driving it anymore. Wants to keep his baby forever. Will probably outlast this guys newer truck. Like the salt in the trunk idea. My son may use that for the trip back in November.

My take on this- you can buy an old Lexus. Engine and transmission, set it and forget it; they’ll will move right along as long as you own it. Everything else? It’ll die like on any other car. Alternator, brakes, suspension, leaks…you’ll have to replace and repair all of those and those cost three times as much as on a mass market brand. I owned an old Lexus and the parts, repairs and maintenance cost more than what I paid for the car itself, so I’d say it’s not worth it. At least not from my experience.
