I follow these guidelines. I'm 33 at the start of the year my balance averaged around 5.5%, paid off a bunch of the higher interest ones and it's now at about 4.2%, so I switched back to investing focus.

Mine are at 7.05%, at 26 years old. I guess I’ll pay them off

Yeah I'd def pay off at that rate. I did everything above 4%, but now I'm chillin on the minimums.

Yeah, I would just invest enough to get any kind of employer match and then focus on paying those off.

Any total debt over 20% monthly income, I’d pay down as well

I paid off my 6% student loans early but am only doing the minimum payment on my 4% loans.

I got my doctorate when i was 29 and had 300k of debt at 6%. I knew people that went the DR approach, lived at home and put everything to the loans. 6 years later, they are debt free. So at 35, they are debt free, with no house, no savings, and nothing to retire on. There are people who puked money into assets, so at 35, they now have 100k of equity in a house, and 150k in investments with 250k in student loans. Both paths lead to the same net worth.

But I feel like you also have to consider the minimum monthly payments. Some people like myself monthly payments are not high. For me loan #1 is $55/month and the other is $80/month but that’s because I didn’t borrow more than $15K. Some people borrowed a lot of money such as at the $50K+ and combined with a low income they may not have room to invest due to high monthly payments even if it’s a low interest rate.

My question is after getting 401k match and max roth, what do I do next. If I get to 25% on income invested I will have barely anything left for saving for future expenses but im behind on investing.I will need to buy a car in next 5 is yrs since mine starting to get issues and almost 200k miles. I have 30k student loan debt that pushes my needs spending to over 50% of income. So save up for car, pay off loans, or follow FOO and get to the 25%?

I was full Dave u til very recently. Full Dave without ever getting gazelle about it so I’m still in debt, also we decided to cash flow my wife’s first 3 years of grad school. Wish I had done some Roth the last 6 years, but…what do you do. Start now.

yes focus on your loans and then put the payments you were paying on those loans into your retirement no student loan or no house payment is a good place to be not having a burden of $500 a month and student loans would be quite nice I can't pay for a house because I have student loan debt

Is the rate fixed our could you be confronted with a big hike somewhere in the future? I had some student loans last year at 0%, but was about to jump to 3% I killed it before the interest rate changed to 3%. (I know 3% is still low, but that was the last debt I had except for mortgage at 1,5%)

My student loans are at 0% because I payed them off in full. Now my wife and I are saving 40% of our income. We saved 55k last year. I don't regret paying our student loans off with a vengeance. No payments equals more money for savings.
