Should I get a 100 or 98 racket?

In the world of modern tennis, advanced players looking for control tend to look for 98 sq inch racquets, while most intermediate players do best to look at 100 sq inches or more. Racquet sizes, on average, have increased over the last 10 years.

I am 67 years old male who played 4.5 when younger and now working my way down to 4.0 due to age. I played 95 to 98 inch thin beam frames for most of last 47 years. I tried 100" head size many times but didn't really like them and went back to 95-98". But, I just bought 2 Wilson Blade100v9 rackets and they are great. I like these more than other 100" frames because they are not stiff and they still have great control. Power and spin are easier too. The softer flex makes them very comfortable too.

I'm glad that you found a 100 head size frame that you liked and is helping your game! The Blade 100 is a great frame that not too many people think about when looking into 100 head sizes but they definitely should

I have always used 98 rackets until a couple of months ago! I had used the Ezone 98 solidly for the last 2 years, but wanted more control as I found the Ezone power could make me hit long at times. I have been using the Yonex Percept 100 for the last few weeks and to be honest I cant see me going back to the Ezone, its an amazing racket, lots more feel, controlled power and hitting less shots long! So I would add the Percept to the list of 100 inch frame rackets and thats from someone who had played with 98 inch frames for the last decade!!!!
@brodytaylor2020
@brodytaylor2020 2 месяца назад
That’s awesome that you found the Percept 100 and you like it so much! It definitely is a great 100 square inch control racquet. The list mainly focused on racquets where the main head size from the line was 100. The percept’s main head size is 97 since it was originally the Vcore Pro but that’s the only reason I didn’t put it there. YONEX did a really good job with the racquet

@@brodytaylor2020 Thanks Brody. To be honest I thought a 97 inch frame may be beyond my capabilities!!! I was worried the 100 inch frame was going to feel large in my hands and maybe slow to swing, but to be honest I would struggle to know its different in size to my Ezone 98. Totally understand why you didnt include it in your list given the 97 inch criteria. Only commenting in case it helps others thinking of giving the Percept 100 a try. Thank you for the video, it was really good!!

I'm glad that you did comment! The Percept 100 is a great frame for the reasons you listed and I think that more people need to know about it or at least demo it. @@brodytaylor2020 Yes will do Brody. The video really helped me as I felt moving to a 100 inch frame was a bit of a backward step from a 98 inch frame. But to be honest the Percept 100 has improved my game and seeing all of the pros you listed in particular the spin which is a big part of my game has reassured me that there are lots of positives to a 100 inch racket!!

Blade 100 has good reviews too. I have the 98 but as an intermediate player, almost regret not getting the 100 for the extra power and larger sweet spot

I think 97’s might have come out first and then they eventually moved to the 98. Making the 98 was probably just an easier way to make a more flexible racquet as well as provide more power and spin for the player

Im more into the specific racquets than into spects Vcore has to be 100 and ezone 98 for me for example, because of their aerodynamics. I cant whip a ezone 100 because of its shape and Vcore 98 doesnt delivers the spin I need from it

Gotcha. Having the specs knowledge as a base is a great place to start in my opinion and then you can start getting more into the specifics of how each specific racquet plays for you personally by using a demo

Very true as well. When I made the video I tried keeping my selections of the 98 head-sizes to racquet lines that had a 98 racquet as the main version rather just the one offs from a line that traditionally started with a 100 head size. That's why I had the Extreme MP in the 100 head size category but didn't mention the Tour in the 98 section since I thought it would confuse people more than help them. Especially if someone is brand new to the sport

I would say to at least demo the Pure Aero 98 and the Speed MP if those are the two you are trying to decide against. The Aero 98 is going to be a little stiffer/harder on your arm than the Speed MP but will probably play more like your current racquet. The Head Speed MP will be a little bit easier to use since it is a 100 head size and a 16X19 string pattern where it looks like your Youtek Radical MP is an 18X20. I don't see anything wrong with either of them as long as you enjoy the feel of them. You may also want to try the new Radical MP just to compare the newer technologies in a more similar racquet than the Aero 98 and Head Speed MP

@@brodytaylor2020 we cannot demo rackets here.....the reason why I'm changing the racket is bcos it's too difficult to find sweet spot, running forehand flys off, racket rotates in my hand, have to generate a lot of power........for these issues, I'm going to choose between speed mp or pure aero (100),,, which is the better choice??

I can't switch frames in the middle of a match. I buy 2 or 3 frames of the same frame and I match them with roughly same weight, balance and swing weight. I cannot tell the difference in my frames when I switch which is what I want. You would be surprised at the difference in rackets weight, balance and especially swing weight for even the same model and year.

This is a joke. 2% difference in racquet string bed area is insignificant for 99.99% of tennis players. Many other racquet and strings features matter more than a 2% area difference.

Wonder why manifacturers sell the same racket in 98 and 100 if it is insignificant for 99.99% of players? Seems like kind of a waste to me.

you probably dont play to a high enough level to recognise the huge differences. the string bed size is just an indicator, there are many differences related to aerodynamics, weight distribution, plowthrough, manouverability etc that only become apparent when you have a consistent technique and apply solid force to the ball

Do you think there should be more 99s?
@brodytaylor2020
@brodytaylor2020 2 месяца назад
I think that if a company can really make an effective racquet that utilizes a 99 head size I could see it becoming more common. Right now though, I personally don’t think 99s are needed right now because then it would mainly confuse people even more when going to try and pick out a racquet as well as just take away more of the companies energy into making better quality 100 and 98 head size racquets
