I put down 17 books last year without finishing them - which ones should I give a second chance to? In this video I'll share which books I stopped reading for good, and which books I may want to read again in the future.

I recently read Tress of the Emerald Sea and it was my first Brandon Sanderson. I almost DNFd it because the narrator and style just felt too whimsical for me. I did keep going, though, and I actually ended up enjoying it!! I did a full video on it if you're interested but I am glad I finished reading it. I plan to read Mistborn next month. From what I gather, it's much more of his typical writing style.

Yes, that’s exactly how I felt! I did consider pushing through but that one was also a library book 🙈

yes!!! i’m reading the last mistborn book in the trilogy and i’m really liking it. the only sanderson i’ve read is tress and the mistborn series, but his writing style is lovely. if you liked tress, mistborn is less YA (not that there’s anything wrong w YA lol) but same vibe.

Hello from a fellow booktuber ☺️🫶 just found your channel on my recommended videos! This is EXACTLY the video I needed to see right now. I’m so bad about DNFing 😅 I haven’t heard of a soft DNF before but I think that might be just what I need to get into the habit. Bunny is one of my most anticipated reads on my tbr shelf! I think I would be into the confusing unreliable narrator, but I can see why someone would not be. We’ll see tho! 👀🤞

Omg hi!!!! Yes, soft DNF absolutely changed the game for me 🙌 and I know so many people who love Bunny, so it’s probably gonna be amazing for you! Just not my thing apparently 😅

I read 2 books that you mentioned, so these are my thoughts. 1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - I did have to read this book for school. 😅 The thing is that I do not typically enjoy historical fiction either. Too many facts, not enough story for me. However, I loved this book because it had a unique story. I love books with a more unique choice for the narrator, so I loved the Death narrated this book. Overall, I like it but I probably wouldn’t have read it if I wasn’t forced to. 2. The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix - I’m gonna be honest, if I was someone who DNF’ed books, I would’ve DNF’ed this one. (I like to read too much to DNF a book. The only time I’ve ever DNF’ed a book was when I was reading War and Peace in 8th grade and I soft DNF’ed it. Got about halfway through but stopped because it was taking too long to read. Anyways I’m getting off topic.) It was just a bore. I couldn’t connect to the characters and the story wasn’t what I usually liked. Overall, it was okay, but it could have been better. I was really hoping to like this one and was disappointed.

Sounds like we’re pretty aligned!! Yeah I’ve heard good things about the narrative style of The Book Thief but at the end of the day reading is about enjoyment for me.

lol I felt the same way about curious tides but it’s a hard DNF for me

I’ve read two of these books recently and loved them both. I didn’t have to read ‘The Book Thief’ for school because it hadn’t been written 😂. Would it help you to read the Elif Shafik book on audio?

Maybe! It’s a good idea. I typically prefer reading literary fiction in physical form, but it’s worth trying!

I also did not like The Book Thief. it's clever but the voice is ehhhh

Totally! Admittedly I didn’t get far enough for the clever bits 😂 but I feel like especially on audio the narrative voice needs to be really strong.
