The Rebbe himself studied engineering at University in Paris, so he definitely wasn't against it. Very solid advice, because it's always harder to go to yeshiva as you get older and busier, but with college it's not as hard.

I'm an atheist and this popped up in my recommended (I like Jewish music) and I thought that this was very reasonable. It's clear that this boy's religion and faith is very important to him, and it seems to be his guide in life - so I think it makes sense for him to take the year so that he can find the direction that he needs, in preparation for college and a career later on. Hopefully his year in Yeshiva helped him contextualize the things he learned later in life and inspire him to be a better person.

I’m Muslim and that video just popped up on my screen and liked it! because of religious videos that I follow daily. It’s always pleasant to see monotheist communities making sure they’re making right things and how important faith is in our lives. That guy clearly thought about his religious education because it means everything for believers.

The Rebbe never undermined the importance of studying secular academics. He basically said to this boy to take one year break going to yeshiva before going to college.

I'm not Jewish But my father taught to me : Learn everything you can For everything you dont know You will have to pay someone else that does. I'm thinking Yeshiva is a Jewish equal to college with teachings of god? At that age i say this rebbe is right Fill in a year of learning See how you feel about it Then take on college if Yeshiva isnt for you You lost nothing from it

Certain things are best to do before committing to college and or a career. I will add military service to that. It is something that I hear people constantly saying: "I had plans to join the service but..." or "I wish I would have served in the military." Also, many people regret living their lives pursuing success instead of serving G-d and others.

...My nephew Abraham was so excellent reading a passage from the Torah at his Bar-Mitvah when 14/15 years old. As his Uncle observing him I thought at that moment that perhaps s "secular education" would not be a best fit however I don't think at the time we had a "Yeshiva" as an alternate pathway. This was over 15 years ago. Sometimes I wonder if a spiritual pathway would have been a good alternative for my nephew. Is it more difficult in modern industrialized technology world? Perhaps.

Baruch hashem. This was good advice. 1 year for religious studies. If he would've went on to college and got into his career he would've never prioritize his religious studies.

As a Christian who picked college over going to seminary, forget college. Even if you decide you want to work in corporate, you don’t need college to be good at what you want to do. As a recruiter, I have literally never hired someone because they went to college. People are hired for their experience and passion for what they do.
@EternalScary

I wouldn’t make such a blanket statement. It all depends on the career path you want to take. If you want to become a physician then college is obviously the right choice. Saying “you don’t need college” is terrible advice in and of itself. And I’m a religious Jew, not that it matters.

Perhaps a silly question but does anyone know if Yeshiva would admit Christians? I want to learn the Torah from Jews and not from the Septugiant.

They generally do not, but there are courses offered by Judaic Studies departments in colleges. Brooklyn College for example has a Judaic Studies department that will teach to anyone who would like to join. I took a class which had Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Was a very interesting experience.

Speaking as somebody who went to college and later converted as an adult: Never go to college. It will lead to nothing but pain, misery, debt, and it will make you attempt suicide at least once (for me it was nine times).
