Thanks soooo much for mentioning that you beat up the chicken before serving, one of my cats can break through a chicken thigh bone but my other I always thought was just picky about the bone, turns out he has weak jaw strength. I had to hammer at the bone for a bit for him to naw and chew at it. This was his first time eating the bone and he consumed about 70% of the chicken before my other cat came in to eat the 27% that was left. Thankyou

Yayyy! This was such a lovely comment to wake up to this morning. Thank you for letting us know that it was helpful. I'm excited to hear that your kitty was able to enjoy a chicken thigh bone for the first time. Here's to more happy crunching!

Great idea ! Pre-crushing wings sounds like fairly standard practice for very young puppies (4wks ?), but it makes perfect sense that it'd also work great as a way to ease the transition to raw prey for cats who havent yet acclimated to REAL chewing. I guess each week you break them up a little less, and introduce things of comparable or incrementally greater challenge like chicken necks. Obviously the ultimate goal would be things like whole ungutted mackerel, mice or rats, et al. I havent had a cat since the 90's, but if I did I would definitely upgrade my feeding to raw. 👍❤

You've done a great job of presenting the basic need-to-knows, not only about feeding raw chicken wings, but also the critical importance of educating oneself on what a nutritionally complete diet for cats must include. Your pacing is very good and it's fun to see and hear your kitty happily crrrrunching away! Thanks to people like Dr. Tom Lonsdale, yourself and several others, our awareness is shifting from despair to hope as we nurture our beloved felines from periodontitis, stomatitis, and other diseases linked with immuno-compromise, to better health, even radiant health, enjoying the happy lives we were meant to share with them.

My cat eats raw meat only. I’ve started making it for her. I started with Darwin’s delivered ground raw cat food. She loves that. I’ve slowly started adding chunks of meat here snd here. Today was the first time I gave her as a treat a raw chicken foot. She didn’t know what to do with it at first but soon she totally got the hang of it snd ate most of it. Her health has improved so much since we switched to raw.

They're also well adapted in the wild to have some tolerance to spoilage because sometimes they scavenge. Yet a domestic cat needs its tolerance built up over time as would a mother but in this modern age who has spoiled meat ? But it's important to note as yes as she indicated cats are adapted to raw meat

It's great that you're learning more about feline nutrition. Please make sure you're feeding your cat a nutritionally complete and balanced diet. Raw chicken meat, liver, and gizzards are not enough to keep your cat healthy in the long term-you'll want to incorporate bone and supplements to make sure he doesn't have any deficiencies. Check out our free, printable raw cat food recipe: www.wildernesscat.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Printable-Raw-Cat-Food-Recipe.pdf Happy raw feeding!

Great vid, and very informative. Suggestion: instead of feeding on carpet, I found it better (back when I had a cat) to do it someplace with smooth floors that are easier to clean and less likely to stain. You can use a portable child barrier to corral them to a modest area so that they dont drag food morsels around the entire floor or worse - attempt to squirrel it away somewhere else in your abode for later.

Awwww... I could watch this cat eat for hours. I've adopted a lil black feral kitten. He'll never taste dry cat food in his life. We're going raw, plus a few cooked meals (scrambled eggs...) and a bit of cat's wet food. And plenty of water.
@rudolphvitousek6981
@rudolphvitousek6981 3 года назад
Why scramble the eggs? I don't get it. No animal eats scrambled eggs. Break two eggs into a bowl, beat them well, and let your cat eat it. Beating the eggs breaks down the whites and makes them easier to eat.

My cat can only eat raw. When she was 15 (now 19)she started to vomit canned food. I give her chicken wings whole and she crunches it down. She loves it, plus I give her lamb heart and beef too and when she uses the litter tray there is hardly any smell compared to manufactured cat food.

Why have I always heard “never give chicken with bones to cats or dogs, it will cut up their intestines”. I have never fed my cat anything with bones due to hearing this
@Wildernesscat
@Wildernesscat 5 лет назад
Cats and dogs can eat small RAW bones because they don't splinter when eaten. Cooked bones, however, splinter and can puncture their intestine, esophagus, or other parts of the digestive tract. That said, cats are best equipped to eat tiny bones like those from rodents, wild birds, etc., so it's always best to give them the smallest bones you can find.

What a beautiful boy! Our boy used to eat off of the concrete, because he'd always take it off his plate. One day I heard a scraping/grinding sound and realized he was just eating soft meat (no bone that time) - he was scraping his teeth on the concrete... after that we tried plastic place mats, the kind intended for children, and that worked so well that we stopped using a plate (just the mat which is very easy to clean each time). Please keep an eye/ear out for teeth scraping, in case your kitties are as crazy as our guy was.

I would love to do this but am worried about the spread of pathogens from the raw meat to the floor since I have kids. Do you do anything specific to make sure no common raw meat bacteria are transferred to the floor and then onto your cat's paws when/if they walk through the spot they ate it?
@Wildernesscat
@Wildernesscat 4 года назад
Hey Daniel. That's a great question. Unfortunately, we don't have any tricks for making sure that bacteria doesn't end up spread around your house. Between particles catching on your cat's body and what's carried through the digestive tract and into the litter box, there is definitely a chance of household contamination. It's really the strongest argument against feeding your cat raw food at this time. If you can't guarantee that your kids are going to wash their hands before they eat or touch their faces, there's no surefire way of ensuring that they won't come into contact with some bacteria. Hope this helps to clear things up for you.

Thanks for this video. I feel like you skipped the most important part to show your viewers and that's how to prep the wing so the cats don't choke on the long bones or break their teeth. A chicken wing bone could be harder than a cat's tooth and put a cat at risk of breakage which puts them at risk of not being able to chew on that side of their mouth ever again (potentially) which means that side can get covered in tartar and they'll still require expensive (vet) or arduous (home) dental care. I'm looking for a way to mash them up so please share your technique!

Comparing a cat eating any raw meat they would naturally obtain to eating commercially factory farmed chicken, of which, in the United States, 95% of all chicken is factory farmed, is not the same. The levels of salmonella in factory farmed chicken as well as, to a lesser degree, any other factory farmed animal, is vastly, vastly higher than wild animals, due to the processing, transportation time, and storage methods of slaughtered farm chickens. Cats DO have much higher tolerance for many bacteria, including salmonella, but there are cases of salmonella poisoning in cats, usually from commercially available raw pet food diets, from what I've seen.

Cats need the innards too, not just a big glob of muscle meat. They need a small amount of liver and heart . I believe they would get about 10 grams of liver per day if they ate small prey in the wild, and also they would eat the heart. Chicken heart is bigger than what they would get in the wild so they prob only need 2-3 of those a day from what I have seen. I am reading up to find out what to give my cat bc cat food companies STINK. Even the ones that claim they have researched nutrition always end up putting all kinds of fillers and stuff that cats would not eat. Veggie oils, cellulose..it's unreal. ALSO "meat by products" could contain pig, and pigs are nasty creatures that carry diseases. They will eat mice/rats and those carry disease/viruses and parasites. Cat food companies have done us a HUGE disservice! Cats in the wild live SHORTER lives bc of eating garbage, mice/rats/lizards/bugs all of which are unclean creatures and carry all kinds of bad bacteria/viruses and parasites. But domesticated pet cats are ALSO getting sick bc of companies putting nasty (pigs, prob even duck is bad) and inappropriate things in the food to save a buck and maximize their profits.

What's your opinion of switching a cat to a raw diet if the cat has a thyroid problem?
@Wildernesscat
@Wildernesscat 5 лет назад
It's an okay idea, in my opinion. I'm guessing you're talking about hyperthyroidism, primarily. That's a condition that really necessitates caloric density and raw food definitely delivers plenty of calories in a small package. That's because the cat is a mammal. All mammals have a microbiome that needs time to adjust to new diets, especially when we increase the life force of the foods. Mammals who eat dead foods have a dead microbiome that can't handle living foods. It's like when people try raw milk. The first 5 times we drink it, we usually get diarrhea, because our microbiome hasn't adjusted, especially if we've grown up on homogenized, pasteurized milk, which is absolute garbage and has no life force whatsoever. Then, like magic, once we've drunk it five times, our microbiome adjusts, and we're fine, and healthier than ever. Same goes with eating raw meat. First time I ate it, I felt sick to my stomach. My body was used to cooked meat, which is absolute garbage and contains no nutrients whatsoever. Now I am turned off by cooked meat, which no longer has any flavor.

Hi Xoxo Xoxo! Thanks for commenting. Wessie was 8 years old in this video. Cats of all ages can eat chicken wings, but if your kitty has trouble eating a big piece, you might want to smash the wing by placing it in a plastic bag and striking it with a hammer. Wessie has trouble getting them down, too, and that's what we do for him. Remember that chicken wings are a bit bigger than what cats would naturally eat, so if you can find bones from a smaller game bird like quail, pheasant, or even grouse, that would be perfect for her little jaws. Hope this helps!

Our cat has a urinary blockage l and so is now on canned and dried urinary tract food. I know it’s not the best but he hasn’t had any issues so that’s our main concern! We are going to start giving him and our other cat a chicken wing once a week, they haven’t quite figured out how to eat it yet so I try to help them along. Do you have any tips other than using a hammer to flatten it a little? Or it is just time?
@Wildernesscat
@Wildernesscat 4 года назад
I'm glad to hear that your cat is doing better! A little canned food for extra moisture is better than nothing. :) Chicken wings can be pretty confusing for cats who aren't used to raw. Other than smashing it a bit with a hammer, you can also chop it up into smaller bits. Try starting with just a wing tip. As you suggested, your cats will probably get better at and figure out how to eat raw wings over time. Best of luck!

No such thing as "urinary tract food". That's a scam some greedy corporation came up with. Feed your cat raw muscle meat and organs, and he'll be fine. Smash the bones with a mallet like she's saying. Blood is great, too, if you can get it from a butcher.
