Hey guys! This is part one of my 3 part series. Should you move to Houston? In this video I'm talking to you about the pros and cons of moving to Houston.
Native Houston, born and raised here. Htown is like anywhere else-- it is what you make it. Im not much of a club scene person but here are a few ideas about Houston: 1- Its big! but that is because we have a lot of suburbs like Sugarland, the Woodlands, Deerpark, Atoscocita, Humble, Katy, Pearland. 2- If you want to enjoy all the city has to offer-YOU WILL NEED A CAR- for said reason I stated above 3- we are very multi-cultural- We have it all, from Africans, to Mexicans, Jamaicans, Asians, everything! Which is great, if you like doing multi-cultural festivals , food and such 4- You can get a great, large nice house for way cheaper than you would in another state, and our taxes wont eat you up 5- Jobs are great. I work in the Chemical/Oil & gas field, but i have worked in other areas too-never have a problem getting a job! The pay is great, and cost of living is lower, so you can have a good work/life balance if you budget 6-It's a friendly city for interracial couples and gay couples- if you're curious about that sort of thing. 7- I ain't gone lie-traffic can be brutal! But its only cuz people are moving here from alllll over the US.. every year we get thousands of new people! You just gotta learn your way around town and learn the short cuts, if there are any. Again you will need a car. A good thing is that we have a great highway structure, you can loop the whole city in about 40 mins. Most of our freeways connect. And you can get to a lot of places going the back roads, and don't have to use the freeway all the time. 8- its a great city to settle down, buy a house, start a family when you are in that season of your life. We have great schools and universities, and a great community colleges called HCC and Lonestar North Harris. 9- We have a lot of festivals, and events going on year round. And one great once a year event called the Houston Livestock Show Rodeo and Carnival. I can't began to explain the fun, food AND the money this event brings to our city. Everyone must go at least once if you move or visit Houston! 9- To sum it up, ain't no place got it all, you have to decide what you are looking for, at this point in your life and make the move..or dont. hope this helps answers some questions!
I lived in Houston briefly. The jobs weren't that great. When it is a working class or blue collar job, they pay LOW. Even the jobs for college grads are pretty low. The only people getting paid work in the medical field, pharmacists or oil/gas.
Kedra001, what surburb of Houston are you refrerring to? I'm trying to move to Houston but I'm not sure where exactly because I've never visited that part of the country. I mainly want to move to Houston for jobs opportunities. I live in a small town outside of Atlanta. I lost my job almost three years ago and I haven't been able to fond a good paying job ever since. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Houston doesn't have it all. Houston has cliques and lots of them. If you have no family, different and maybe eccentric or unusual in some way to Houstonians, you will be left alone and cut off completely. You can be accepted by other cultures. But it will be hard nonetheless.
@@guillaumefrancois3942 Depending on what jobs you are looking for, I can tell you that from where I and family and friends have lived places with the better jobs and an almost all around middle or upper class is places like Jersey Village, Willowbrook, Cypress and Sugarland. Then there are places like Richmond, Pearland, Pasadena and Deer Park where you can live a nice life with maybe lower costs compared to the northwest side I just mensioned but you have to work harder. In other places like South Houston and Aldine, or close to downtown you will find harder-working people with smaller jobs or people looking for one or people that don't want one and because of this you see a lot more crime depending where you are. I hope I helped overall Houston is good nice city once you get settled , secured, and get to explore it yourself.
I moved to Houston last year for football. I love it it's home for me now! I stay in katy and you can get an luxury apartment for a great price. The food is amazing to me!!! Keep striving for greatness. You got this.
DEJ 611 trust me it will be the best decision of your life!!!!! You will meet new ppl and it's always something to do!!! It's never a dull moment in Houston! I love living in katy! It's beautiful, peaceful and it's everything you can ask for
DEJ 611 😂😂😂😂😁😁😁😁💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾 trust me it's the place to be. Everybody is moving to Houston!!! It's crowded but it's plenty of room for everyone trust me on that. It's worth it I promise you that. Make the move!!!! You will not regret it I promise.
Im a native Houstonian and I can tell you that Houston does not have a distinct culture because it is it extremely multicultural and diverse. But that's a great thing because it means that on any given day you can choose from a variety of great food like Caribbean, Indian, Mexican, American, Spanish, Greek, Soul Food, etc. You just have to be in the know. As far as festivals there are plenty when the weather is nice but you have find an events blog or something to keep up with dates. I personally follow the Houston Press because they keep you posted on everything that's poppin in Houston. You can go to their site, Facebook or grab a free paper every week that they print (which can be found at restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores etc). Also all of those towns that you named are not actually in Houston which is what's making everything seem so far. So if you are traveling from anywhere outside the beltway 8 into downtown its going to be far because you are coming from another town. hth
Shelby Steele you right and baby Höūstonîan is actually pronounced Joustonii'a if you actually have a Aboriginal descent blood line how I know I'm part Samoan
Beware of extreme Heat on any gaving Days and sometimes at night ,road rage, groups of Haters, if you can keep these at a extreme minimal, Houston is great.
Been here since 2014 from ATL and I love H-Town! Restaurants are off the chain, strong job market, unlimited opportunities, lounges are good, sports bar, etc. The flooding can be a pain in the ass, but outside of that the city is booming and growing!
Appreciate the video, Im outta New Orleans too grew up here most of my life. Got some fam in Htown. I plan on moving there for a new life with my family next year!! You pretty much hit it on the note. Gotta get used to that big ass city😂
Pretty accurate description of Houston I would say. I've been here for awhile now and I get the sense that the city is not interested in having a thing. It's a city where you come to get a good job( especially in the oil and gas and medical field) set up a family and enjoy a good quite life. It's has the basic things most major cities have. All the professional sports teams, good amount of higher education, major industries etc...but when it comes to culture/things to do... you're bound to get bored quick. I don't believe the city is build to play, it's more of work and live a life you'd create with friends and family.
Abraham Tadesse I would agree with you after some comments and some suggestions on here tho I see that there are a few festivals and things to get into. Maybe we just have to explore a little more!
I'm a little older but, was in Houston twice a month for 14 months. Didn't catch the names but all are in the Sharptown Mall Area. Suggestion....ask the Island locals or Africans you run into. They love to brag about there food and won't steer you wrong..lol PS.... Will be moving to Conroe TX late 2018...."great jobs" you are right on that....take care lil sis.
Ju Gray I'm Nigerian. Check out Finger Lickin (It's on Bissonet). They have pretty much any kinda Nigerian food you can find in this country and there's even an African store behind it (so if you're into black soap and some other shit that's good for your skin, you can check out Southwest Farmer's Market right behind Finger Lickin). There's also Wazobia, Lagos Island and a few others. Don't know much about Caribbean food but maybe you'll like African (Nigerian) food. And go to a Nigerian club too (like Cloud 9). I've been in there till 5, 6 in the morning and it was still popping lol.
Hey I just moved from New Orleans to Houston and you are sooo right about it lol I don’t know anyone here. I feel so lost and lonely in this big ass city 😂😂
I moved to Houston from Austin in December of 2018 and it’s ok. I really wanted the feel of living in a big city that offered culture (which Houston definitely does) and Austin doesn’t really offer that. I love the food and people. But the traffic, jobs & pay is bad to me. I was in the construction field in Austin making around $25/ hr. Here the same position pays around $18-20/hr or LESS. I was shocked it took so long for me to find a good paying job. I thought for sure I’d find something quick knowing the city was filled with opportunity. But that’s the problem...there’s sooo much competition that if you ask for more $$ they’ll cancel you and hire the next person with the same skills for cheaper because most people out here think $16-18 dollars an hour is really good 😩 I would move back to Austin if I had the opportunity 😭 BUT I do like the suburbs. Katy, sugar Land, Pearland, humble, the woodlands ...nice quality of living and less expensive 🙋🏾♀️
lachell071393 I used the material online I believe on TEXes and I did the practice test and study guide. Don’t think too much on it and stress I’m sure you’ll do great!
Welcome to Houston!!I'm older now but back in the day Houston night life was great(I use to party my butt off). Most of the clubs are closed now or not worth going to.I think the recession hurt most of the black clubs but that's only my opinion.I've been here my whole life and will answer any question....
Carnisha XO if the job opportunities in Nola were as great as Houston and paid better. Nola would be a perfect city to live in. I like the compact city and walkability in new orleans compare to Houston.
Carnisha XO yes I'm not from new Orleans but I have family that live out there and she sound just like them. Just the way she talk is so New Orleans lol
I plan on moving to Houston, Dallas or Austin from Boston so I need to see which city fits me best, I cant wait for this roadtrip. Any Texans have any advice on what to expect
Your video is pretty accurate and interesting to hear from an “outsider” perspective. As a native Houstonian, I’d say you picked a great field and content certification to go into (intermediate education as a single is a great pick ) I’ve noticed that we don’t have many of the creative jobs that you can find on the coast. But teaching public education here will start you around at least $53k and for a single that’s pretty decent, there’s also the booming medical field (nursing, etc) is also great job security. The oil/gas industry is lucrative but competitive and inconsistent. Lastly, you’ve got your HR and corporate business jobs... so i can see why ppl see this as a great option for jobs however if you are looking for alternative/unconventional jobs we have a ways to go imo. Good content.
Christina Onwuchekwa I agree completely. It’s a great place for job security and as you said for unconventional and creative jobs I haven’t really seen or been exposed to it.
Also if you haven't tried the breakfast club you messing out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best breakfast spot in the city to me. Since you like going out during the day try the palladium movie theater it's amazing! I think it's in cypress! Let me know if you go to either one and let me know how you enjoyed yourself.
Yesssir! Breakfast Club is everything man! That shit is the complete truth. Never been to the palladium and I’m a local Houstonian. Gonna have to try it.
They do have lots of diversity in Houston as far as people and food. Houston is voted as the most diverse city in the US along with NY and Los Angeles. They have a large Puerto Rican/Dominicans/Cuban, Nigerians, Jamaican, Chinese and Vietnamese population. Houston has way more than New Orleans style food. They also have a lot of different restaurants. You just gotta get out more and research. I’m going to the Puerto Rican/Cuban festival this year out there so they also have different heritage festivals every year in Houston. You’ll be amazed on how diverse Houston is.
Thanks for your hard work and details of explaining things about the area. Is Houston a Boom Town? I am looking in to moving there when my daughter finishes High School but not until 2024.
Lately its been every year but really only affects certain areas really bad. It's never flooded in the energy corridor since I lived there it does near buffalo bayou or anywhere downtown.
What about Austin Texas? I'm from Los Angeles, CA and finishing up graduate school as USC. Looking to relocate my business to Austin. I'm single, no kids, but would like to establish something soon in a family oriented city. Any advice moving to Austin oppose to Houston?
Most of the “New Orleans Style” restaurants here are run by people from Louisiana, so if they’re not up to par then I don’t know what to tell you. Houston is somewhat like Cali, with a ton of “Tex-Mex” restaurants, and that is the type of foods a lot of Houstonians like. The famous Turkey Leg Hut serves our version of “comfort food”. There’s a variety of soul food, steak houses, and seafood spots especially near the Galveston area. I’ve noticed an increase in sushi and vegan spots so I assume there’s some growth in patrons. There are a lot of so-called “after hour clubs” that stay open til 4am, you just need to explore more. Houston is so large that a lot of things are missed. I knew a family that moved here from New York to Southeast Houston..they lived here for over a year and never drove farther than downtown so they didn’t know what the Southwest had to offer. I told them to drive down Westheimer to Hwy 6, go around and come back through Sugar Land. They did, and that changed their life, lol.
Someone Please tell me if Houston has AFRICAN Hair salons?! I’m planning on moving there next year. I’m coming from Queens NY and really need to know🙏🏾
I am interested in moving to Houston and thinking about getting my masters in education to become a teacher, however, my bachelors degree is in communication. Do you have any advice? I have experience in education, former paraprofessional and substitute teacher. I currently am a residential counselor and former admissions counselor for job corps.
Felicia Shaffer if you want to teach now you can do an alternative teaching program and get certified rather quickly or you can get certified through your masters
Things that I would advise anyone to consider before moving to Houston or Harris County. 1. Because its so spreadout, have a great job (paying at least $75k or preferably more ) kalready linedup Some areas are "self-sustaining" but expensive. Meaning area is good for work, living, recreation, and other (hospital, vet, car dealership, mechanic, shopping) but can be expensive. 2. Live nearby work, see #1. Traffic can be bad. 3. If you have to drive, have a car alarm with motion and noise sensors. Car burglary teams roam all areas. 4. Largely flood prone, see #2, #1. Consider having snorkel on your vehicle. 5. Hot and humid almost all year. See #1. Electric bills spike during the summer. 6. If you have a home with a garage, use it and get an alarm. See #1 Burglary teams roam all areas. 7. Also, Harris County is prone to auto and biker, bicyclist, and pedestrian accidents. Bike, jog, and walk in the park. During the day. 8. Texas is a Conservative and right-to-work state. I've heard about some people who were employed, interviewed in a local paper, and might have expressed some liberal interests (I can't recall exactly), but, weren't employed afterwards. In short, sure, its has its pros and cons and its certainly not Mayberry.
I’m glad I watched the full video. I’m from the dmv (va) and I’m strongly considering moving to Houston. I did inspire Texas for the Texas teaching certification so I’m hoping to find a job in July/August. How difficult was the interview process to get a teaching job?
Houston’s thing when it comes to food is mixing it up. Like, you can have a Korean/ Mexican seafood restaurant. I noticed a lot of New Orleans restaurants open after Katrina when a lot of people decided to stay in Houston. I assumed it was them opening up their own restaurants here, but I guess not. But we get a lot of people from a lot of different places and Houston doesn’t really have anything that could be considered it’s “thing” with the exceptions of mixing everything together and barbecue.
You are the bomb thank you for this video ! I’m planning to move to houston soon I’m a Chef and own a Caribbean food business in nyc I’m debating if houston would be the right city for me and the expanding Of my business ..
Awaken D yes. Bring your Caribbean food making skills. We love food from all over and on the outskirts of the city, you can set up a good food truck and people will come try it out.
Now that u have been there. Would u rather b in Cali? What part of cali were u in? I’m trying to decide between southern Cali and Houston. I kno it’s cheap in Houston. And a lot to do in Cali. But as a single mother with two. Which place would u recommend. I love the beach and festivals and u say that it’s not there. So what is there other than cheap apts and jobs? What about the schools vs cali? What about the family aspect? What about dating vs cali?
In my opinion Cali is unrealistically expensive and just not a place for someone to try to be successful. Houston is cheaper, very diverse (like Cali) but also has great opportunity (as far as I've seen). I never dated in Cali because I was with my ex when I lived there. But I really love Houston.
Going to Houston for the first time tomorrow. Probably going to settle there. Recommend me some "good food" restaurants! New Orleans style, Jamaican, and all you think "good". Thanks!
Hi Ju, 2 Questions, How is it dating in Houston that’s if u date? Why did you move to Houston? About 10-15 years ago i thought about moving from NYC to Houston, but bc of fear I never left. I’m afraid of change & I don’t know what type of job I want to do.
I visited Houston in 2016, and had a great time, and thinking of moving there too. I live in Dayton OH, and a friend of mine moved there, and she’s doing really good now. She lives in Deer Park. But yea she’s not lying about the distance lol. It took me a good hour to get downtown from Deer Park lol. Traffic is crazy af. BUT wherever you stay, you have everything you need. Movie theaters, grocery, anything you need. Jobs are BOOMING in Houston though. All over Texas fr... if you can’t get a job in Houston, then you don’t wanna work
I’m planning to move to Texas, I kinda wanna move to wherever a more city part of Texas is. Although, I’m not sure where is a good city to live in, maybe? I’ve looked & everything,. I really don’t know, any suggestions? I’m looking to live in an apartment once I move. What are some good areas to live in that are close to lots of stuff & isn’t really boring. Edit: also leave advice for not only me, but for everyone lookin around the comments! After you tell me where in Texas is comfortable to live in, tell me all about the place. What should I expect? hows the weather? Are there any bugs that are annoying around the seasons ? Lol. What vibe do most people give off ? Does the whole city have a vibe of its own? Idk guys, lmk about stuff I should know about lol. Thank you! Btw I’m from California. & before anyone says ‘don’t come to Texas... ur just ruining tExAs... stay in cali... blah blah blah.’ WHY IS EVERYONE SO RUDE I LOOK AT RU-vid VIDEOS RELATED TO MOVING TO TEXAS & I LITERALLY SEE EVERY SINGLE COMMENT SAYING THAT STUFF. California is expensive, us people are struggling Lol. Anyways thank you for reading. & responding.
Zydeco downtown is pretty good. Houston is known for multicultural diversity. Indian food. Thai food etc. And clubs shut down at 2 am anywhere but NOLA.
Lived in Houston for 10 years..... Loved everything about! The night life was great you just have to know where to go. Had some of the best Mexican food while there. There is just so much it has to offer. Don't think she has found the right connections yet. Have missed it alote. Given the chance would go back in a heartbeat!!!!
Houston's thing is Tex-Mex! It has the BEST Tex-Mex. Go to Teotihuacan and you will not be disappointed. It's 1511 Airline Dr. Fun fact: Fajitas were INVENTED at the Original Ninfa's on Navigation Street, another awesome Tex-Mex restaurant. You need to try those two! There's also El Tiempo, Escalantes, and Torchy's Tacos to name a few fantastic ones.
Just moved to Houston 2 weeks ago and the news is talking about a tropucal storm..im from Chicago..Blizzards and slippery snow conditions I know..but uhhhh a tropical storm sounds like madness ..im scared 😔😔😊😊🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
I visted Houston earlier this year & had planned to move next year. The flooding this year has deterred me. I've been told not all areas flooded. What are some areas in Houston that didn't flood? I visted the area near the Galleria this year & looked at places about 45 min from there. I will be visiting Dallas/Arlington this year as an alternative to Houston.
searphhoney I’m actually in Richmond/Rosenberg which is close to Sugarland. And we didn’t flood as bad. Though there were some areas in Rosenberg that did flood my area was ok. I guess honestly it was just hit or miss with the flooding
Houston has so many cultures, it ain’t even funny, but it’s certain parts of Houston that do things differently than the other parts of Houston. And to be Honest, you kind of have to grow up around or near Houston to understand the Culture or to find the good food places.
And I'll be headed there with you this summer! From little ole Petal Mississippi lol ! I like it when I come across other Mississippians moving to Houston too.
I feel you on everything you said I’m still trying to figure out what and who exactly are we like what is our culture? Night life/gay life sucks..To me the food and traffic sucks ..some of the jealous mentalities too and a lot of women/people have a tendency to act “better than”...I fell in love with New Orleans it’s crazy as fuck here but I love it 🥰 thanks again
