Ryan I once heard a saying “everyone else’s work is always more interesting because I do it every day”. The wisdom is there in those words. I am a retired air traffic controller from Chicago and the usual response for that is one of interest. But for me because I did it every day for 30 years it was monotonous 99% of the time and terrifying the other 1%. Your work has meaning, and your videos go a long way to spread the importance of your work. The visuals are amazing and you bring a reality to a part of the world most of us will never see. Because of people like you people like me can share in your love and commitment to this part of the world. Thank you.

There's actually a charity in Africa for families that Live in some of the most isolated areas. Obviously pilots bring in a lot of food and water and other nasesaties. But the families have no heath care. Zero. None. Whatsoever. So there's a charity called riders for health or something like that where These girls and guys deliver medication and vaccines and other medical provisions and equipment. In some cases they will somehow transport people to hospitals as well. Although that mostly done by Bush planes like the caravan and Kodiak. These communities are literally relying on these services for their lives and the lives of their families. These guys do an incredible job bringing medication to these communities. Hospital are usually 20 or 30 km away and before now they would walk to hospital....

I think if you start with ground only info videos that maybe a second channel is in order if they become regular daily videos. Too many other pilot youtubers who I latched onto their channel because they were primarily flying started too much secondary non flight videos and have lost my “ooh a new flight I want to click now” attention. Ryan, the videos that I really find interesting are when you do "on the ground" videos at the various landing sites you visit. The villages and their residents, what they do for a living, the impact your service provides, and their cultures are even more interesting than the "routine" flights. However, the final approaches and takeoffs from the more "interesting" bush strips certainly add to the missions you fly so keep those coming.

I second this opinion. Also, you could combine this with doing local tribal food reviews (part of flying there) and acquire Travel Channel affiliation. This could start a flying Indonesian premium gourmet food & culture tourism industry. The experience of flying small planes in exotic places, occasional thunderstorm flying, cargo/passenger missions, danger, culture, jungle, food, and people is something I would love to see. Perhaps reach out to: ru-vid.com for partnership/ideas.

As a nervous flyer, I'm enjoying seeing what pilots do and hearing some of their internal monologue. Seeing you very calm as you fly around, whereas I'd be a quivering wreck in the back of the plane, is helping me to gain a bit more confidence in the whole process of flying (I suspect my ignorance about how planes can fly is the root cause of my nerves). Calm piloting in calm situations, and calm piloting in difficult conditions, is good to watch 😊

I am a private pilot for almost 20 years now. I am flying single engine planes and have my IFR rating (although not current). I am flying on and off because sadly, it is starting to get boring for me. I still think being able to fly is the greatest privilege on earth given to me, so why would it get boring? Because I am doing it without a real purpose, except for my personal enjoyment and to spend a ridiculously large amount of money to do it! This is what differentiates me from you Ryan. You are doing it for a real purpose! Your flying enables a lot of people in PNG to do some good work down on the ground which would be absolutely impossible without you and the great Kodiaks . Also, sharing your work and flying with us is such a great purpose that I would beg you on my knees to please keep doing what you are doing including your VLOGs. How could that ever be “monotonous”? Merry Christmas to you, your loved ones and a great start into 2021. Stay safe, healthy, and always enough altitude between you and the ground..

Don’t change anything Ryan. I have been watching your videos from the very start when you had about 50 followers including me. Your videos work excellent compared to others, as a trainee pilot I’m learning from you and the scenery is amazing. You’ve gone from SD to HD and different angles. I don’t want to know about your personal life, that’s yours, or your beliefs/life history. I just enjoy the learning, flying a Kodiak and the skill. It’s easy to watch other videos and it’s owners transgress into something more professional with the background music and the clickbait. Your method works well and I enjoy the twice a week sitting here in Queensland on the big screen watching your videos in 4K with a beer. Keep them coming, and please don’t add music 😂 (however, when I get a chance to fly to PNG from Brisbane one day, I’d love a flight in your Kodiak 😉)

Ryan, I suppose some change can be good, but keep in mind that you ran this channel up to 116k subscribers pretty quickly, so your current video “formula” would be considered by most to be quite successful. I think there is always some appetite for seeing and learning more about the “stars” on your channel, i.e., you, the airplanes, the country, the topography and scenery, the people, etc. You’ll have to decide how much of all that you want to make public, particularly any information that is more directly personal about you and your family, mission, and situation in PNG. Whatever you decide, I believe your channel will continue to flourish. Thanks for all you do...

Ryan, don't quit. As many of the comments below say, we are watching. I am a flight sim pilot (X-planes) and have been interested in the pilot work since I was little. I have made many of the flights you have done in your videos, and the work you do is not easy. It is one thing to miss breaking enough on a short, slippery grass runway in the mountains in a sim. Doing it as you do in real life, my hat off! There is no restart in real life... You also have a fantastic perspective of the human side of the work you do outside the plane, and the service you provide in a place I will never visit. That is a treasure. Also, the weather with big towering cumulonimbus clouds and the ever changing winds in the mountains makes your flights interesting, and the views... wow! Hang in there. We out here at the internet are hanging out with you! Have a good New 2021, from me in Sweden. See ya. /J

To answer your question, it is a desicion for you alone. As you mentioned, pilots have to get used to doing the same, or very similar routines every time they fly, but they also need to be aware of complacency. The time to move on to another job is when you feel it is time to go, not after an incudent. When I read Missionary Bush Pilot, I expect videos that show the lives of the people you support by delivering goods to them. You are one of very few people to get to these remote areas. You are in a unique position to show us how the locals live. But instead you just talk about yourself and your plane. What a missed opportunity.

I did not realize that those toggle switches were simply a "checklist." That is BRILLIANT!!!! It would be GREAT to see a closeup video of them so we could see what each switch says. It looks like there is different letters on top and bottom of each switch. How do you use it exactly? Switching the switches down pre-takeoff and up for approach??? I Love your videos as I am completely interested in seeing things exactly the way they are. Very informative and interesting for me. There are lots of flying youtube channels out there. Yours is very unique because it is just what it is. All of the RU-vid flying channels have their own approach. Most try to convey the joy of flying etc. And those are good too, but your videos show 2 very important things. 1. Just what being a professional pilot is EXACTLY and without any attempt to "dramatize" it or make it something that it isn't. 2. Also a very unique location. I mean it would be one thing for a Fed-ex cargo pilot flying a Caravan between 2 small locations somewhere in the southwest US. That might get old if it were the same 2 locations, but your specific flying service is, I think, especially unique and adds spice to some adventure.... Thank you for publishing these videos.

Having spent many years in PNG and Indonesia flying to and from mining and other remote sites, in both fixed and rotary wings I appreciate that you take these flights and letting us understand what you guys do. I appreciate you explaining the various functions and systems a pilot must learn and know like the back of their hands, I appreciate your skills very much as i have lost a great friend from my Bougainville days, when the Britten Norman Islander he was flying from Tabubil to Mt Hagen was lost in bad weather. As far as I am aware, Richard still lays in the wreckage. He flew with Crowley Airlines at the time and he went to Bougainville as a Camp manager on the project, so he could learn to fly. He never left and spent his life flying in PNG.

Hi there. I'm very interested to know when that accident occurred. My father flew helicopters in Bougainville in the late 60s, and sadly was killed in a crash out there. His name was David Binnie, and there's apparently a mountain near Kieta (where he was based) named after him.

@@TheBishopOfBarton Richard lost his life in 1985, the Mt Hagen show was on also. In the early days there was a rotor from an early "bubble" bell helicopter, lost in the exploration days, at what was then the bar at the old exploration camp site. Pilot was lost in that one, but was before my time on the Project, so I do not know the pilot's name.

Ryan, I just recently found your site and find it extremely interesting. Not only your flight videos but also seeing how you interact with the folks at PNG and how much you are helping these folks. You should be very proud of what you do! I was a pilot at one time, flew a Cherokee 140, but because of medical reasons I can no longer fly. I really miss flying but watching your videos brings back many memories. Your flying skill is without a doubt top notch and one could learn much just from watching you and how you handle the plane. Also, want you are doing to help the folks at PNG is just unbelievable. The world needs more Ryan's right now. Please keep these videos coming and whatever you do, don't quit. All the best to you and your wife.

Hi Ryan, I'm a Papua New Guinean flight simmer (FSX), almost 99% of my flights are here in PNG usually the Nadzab, Hoskins and POM routes and some on Kokoda. Anyways, Here's my opinion on things and why what you are doing is totally unique; BUT FIRST: DON'T QUIT what you're doing!!! Despite anything, YOU'RE AN INSPIRATION!! Every video you post is unique in its own way... 1. You're the first PNG bush pilot I've come across who has a RU-vid channel. 2. Your content is relevant and easy to follow through - not to mention "humbling' in some way...hehe. 3. You mix a bit of humor with flying - which is great! Also enjoy you sharing local knowledge about the bush area you are flying in, such as the WW2 wreckages and landmarks. Not to mention your biking...hehe. 4. There's flight simmers in PNG who are not aware of this content. I'm sure they'll subscribe and enjoy your content if they knew. 5. I think you are doing a really great job sharing aviation knowledge and first hand experience flying in PNG - Its rare here in PNG (hehe) that pilots openly share their experience and love of flying to encourage, inspire and motivate upcoming pilots - A treasure chest for anyone interested in flying in PNG. 6. I've improved my bush flying techniques and understanding on various functions of the G1000 because of your videos- I fly a Cessna Grand Caravan 208 EX on the flightsim. 7. After watching your videos and getting inspired, I started sharing a bit of my flight siming adventures in FB.... I haven't seen any of your flight Sim content on youtube yet, but hoping when I subscribe to your patreon I would. All in all, thank you for taking the initiative in sharing your bush flying adventures in Papua New Guinea. Not many have done that in a more informative and enjoyable way, and I salute you for doing that... keep on doing what you do! God bless you and keep you safe. Cheers!

What makes a great pilot? Some years ago, during my initial flight training, my instructor use to say "just because it's legal doesn't mean it's smart"! Safety of flight is number one on the priority list - everyone arrived alive and the airplane is still usable for the next flight. There are some days where an "arrival" is better than a "greaser" - and safer too. As a pilot, I like having your channel on during the day as a reminder of what a blessing it is to be able to maneuver these wonderful machines. Great channel.

Videos of long, routine flights are sometimes a bit monotonous, but your narration throughout the flight provides education. (This non-pilot has learned a lot). I agree with others that showing some of the non-flying aspects of your life, the people, culture, history would add value (I suspect getting permission to show other people may take some effort). Anyone who says a monkey could fly into those mountain bush runways is crazy. You have to be on top of many parameters at all times, especially when on most of them you can only land one direction, often with a tail wind. Your attention to detail is impressive. If you have time at some point could you explain your variable pitch prop? At feather it is providing the least resistance to forward motion but the most resistance to rotation. Fully forward it is the flattest pitch which is the most resistance to forward flight but least resistance to the engine. In between pitches give you the most thrust for the conditions of weight and altitude and speed. If you increase engine power too fast with the prop feathered you can probably over torque the prop. But, if you have it at too flat a pitch with too much power on you could spin it right off. How do you balance the pitch and torque to the flight/taxi/startup conditions? Thanks for being such a good pilot.

Most jobs have monotonous aspects, but I believe most aviators have a gene that: makes them build model airplanes when they are six or seven, forces them to look up if there is a plane overhead, gives them goose bumps when they enter an aviation museum, and offers a tingle when the wheels lift off the ground.

I'd like to visit places on the ground, in the air, and with the drone. The motorcycle trips would be interesting to many of us, I think. About the monotonous comment: ever wonder how many miles an olympic speed skater has practiced going around in a circle? I really hope the comment was from a teenager, because most people should have learned before adulthood that expertise involves endless repetition while focusing on constant improvement. Those who find repetition of complex tasks boring are simple minded and may never be very happy due to their insistence that they arrive rather than journey.

Please keep doing what you're doing. Don't stop. I've found your channel to be refreshingly different in a certain niche way; especially your verbalized checklists, attention to detail etc. I have learn a lot about the way you tend to verbalize your thinking and decision making regarding the weather, how the wind will affect your approach and landing, what your options are etc. These 'pilot decision making' verbalizations are in my opinion, the main reason your vlog has become so popular and that is the recipe for your success I think. I've certainly learn a lot and look forward to continue learning from you, who I have come to respect as a demonstrably professional and exemplary pilot. However, I think it would be interesting to add some human element of the people you serve and the end result of your missions as well. The flying 'mission' is not the point of your efforts - the end result that becomes a reality BECAUSE of those missions, is why what you do is valuable and important and it would create closure if we are privileged to experience a little bit of that. Having said that, most of us here are here because of the aviation interest, so that is the foundation of your vlog and should stay so, in my opinion. On another note, I've taken keen interest in your checklist 'box', and can absolutely see how that can be valuable to prevent missing or skipping important steps, for instance gear/prop/mixture, etc. You have teased availability of such systems and I would really like to get my hands on one. Any information would be appreciated!
