Should I Run New Speaker Wire? | Car Audio Q&A

This is a common question after upgrading to aftermarket car speakers, should you go through and replace the factory wire?
If you can then yes, it's not going to hurt anything, especially with higher power amplified speakers the larger gauge and a more direct path for the signal can make a big difference.

To answer the question, it doesn't matter. The factory "molex" (incorrect term) connectors are weatherproof, minimal loss connections (remember you engine and sensitive sensors use these same connector types), and are designed to withstand vibrations and chaffing from years of being abused in your vehicle. For most enthusiasts these runs are more than sufficient, especially in newer OBDII vehicles, as they contain high copper OFC and sometimes silver wire. INSTEAD consider is how the connection is terminated. The best option is to solder the connection to the speaker and protect the connection with a silicone based boot or glue. Wire terminal spades and butt splices provide no protection against corrosion and can loosen over time resulting in a loss in performance. Splices into the factory harness should also be soldered. One word of caution, some factory harnesses have a coated wire inside. This coating will have to be striped or burned off prior to soldering.

Sure, there aren't much losses through the connectors unless they are damaged or corroded (not all of them are sealed), but there will still be slight losses. But the bigger issue is that the tiny wire gauge generally won't be adequate for significantly more powerful systems. The wire won't matter that much if you just upgrade the speakers and/or radio, but matters a great deal on more powerful systems. For the sake of simplicity, a constant 100 watt load across a 4 ohm speaker will be 5 amps at 20 volts. Running 5 amps through 15 feet of 24 gauge copper wire designed for perhaps 10 watts RMS will lose about 3.8 volts or nearly 20% of the total power. In reality, it would be worse than that because an audio signal is not constant and 100W RMS actually consists of many peaks exceeding that average.

This is a indecisive video. It’s appears you fellas don’t or can’t back your statement so you stay on opinion. I don’t have any expertise in audio, but if you use your electrical comparison then there’s no way your opinion holds water. Using ohms law or watts law to support or challenge your opinion is how I would argue that factory wiring is sufficient for a 75 watt RMS amp. Meaning if we are to assume 75 RMS, and 14.4 volts DC supply from the alternator to amp, that means watts law states 5.3 amp will be running at max power through the factory wires, which according to which chart you read, 22AWG can handle 7-8 amps. If a factory harness is running 18AWG, then by that same rule it’s more than equipped to handle 75RMS amps. Wires themselves are rarely the issue. It’s usually the connection points which you did mention that cause issues.
@TheLinc75
@TheLinc75 4 года назад
Your point is valid, just make sure you are doing the right math. Just because you get 14.4v to the amp doesn't mean that is also the output to the speaker. You only have the output wattage of each channel of the amp and the resistance/impedance of the speaker. So you have to use the formula amps=√watts/resistance. To keep with your example, 75w rms going to a 4 ohm speaker would only be pushing 4.3a at 17.3v.

I believe if your wire is not thick enough and it deteriorates it can short out your amp easier with crap wire

I would say it all depends on what you're running as far as watts/amps are concerned. Im running Kenwood components in my front doors and polk db571 in my rear of a 2007 Fusion off of a Pioneer GM-4604. I've always cut the wires at the rear of the factory harness and ran new wire from that point to the amp. Car sounds Great. If your connections are good (solder/heat shrink) you should always see .4-.3 ohms of resistance on the new wire ran. If you took that same wire at the same length of the run you made, guess what.....resistance will be the same!
@LooseCannon48
@LooseCannon48 8 лет назад
Id say there is a difference. After all what does resistance equate to....a loss of power and added heat. I remember the first time I added larger gauge wire and high power terminals to a speaker box. The difference was night and day. You would have thought I increased the gain. Same goes with rca's. Not sure whether or not the type of metal really makes a difference but the same thing happened when switched to some better quality rca's. The is always a noticeable difference with better products.

I just picked up a pair of Rockford Fosgate Power 6.5" 75W RMS speakers and I'm in process of upgrading from the factory wiring to 14AWG wire. I just don't trust the factory wiring at this point.. the speakers these replaced were RF Prime 45W. And I just ordered an RF Punch P400x4 amp.

Thanks guys, it helps to upgrade the wires. Makes a much better difference in performance.
@kylesplace

The finer the strands the more resistance is in the wire, the purpose of the strands is to make it more flexible. A 10 guage speaker wire would probably have the same capacity as a 12 or 14 gauge solid wire, although solid wire would be hard to run in a vehicle and can break. I just used a 50ft spool of 14 guage stranded wire from Home Depot in my truck build and soldered the splices. I'm not going for the best setup though, I don't even have an amp or sub. I think when it comes to speaker wire the insulation is most important, it may be better at blocking interference from other wires.
@blazed85
@blazed85 2 года назад
I'd say if you normally listen to your music almost as loud as it can go all the time then I'd suggest upgrading to larger wire. It should put less stress on your head unit or amp and would probably give you more clarity at the high volumes.

How much speaker wire do I need to run throughout the car for a 4 channel amp?
@1GTASANANDREASCJ
@1GTASANANDREASCJ 8 лет назад
from an engineering standpoint: Don't buy expensive wires! You can't hear any difference from cheaper one's( this doesn't mean, you should buy crappy ones. Quality isn't proportional to price). There are good and bad quality wires, but they are only noticable at Mhz, not in our khz region(a human can hear from about 15 hz to 20khz). And gold plugs dosn't make any difference, unless you are often plug and unplug it. Don't waste your money in to expensive wires, just check that they are well built and have a low own resistant. Better buy high quality amps and speakers.
@timothyhinton5665
@timothyhinton5665 8 лет назад
so what determines a good or bad wire?
@eastender74
@eastender74 8 лет назад
+1GTASANANDREASCJ This is not so much about higher quality but of putting in a more direct line and using a heavier gauge of wire for less resistance. It doesn't have to be like oxygen-free monster cable type wire. 16 awg is normally sufficient for door speakers up to 100 watts each when driven by an amplifier.
@1GTASANANDREASCJ
@1GTASANANDREASCJ 8 лет назад
Timothy Hinton It's allabout the built quality. Plugs(golden one's should only be bought, when you unplug your cable often, otherwise waste of money) should be correctly "wired" to the copper cable and perfectly sits with jacket (plastic). Resistance itself should be low, but not to low and not to high. If it's to high: The signal is much lower on the amplifier/speaker. If it's to low: You can hear distortion. if you don't want that your cable is corroding, buy oxygen free cable, which i also prefer. And what eastsender74 said: How "thick" your copper wire (gauge) is and if every wire has an isolation (against magnetic fields)
@nathanielrenner9540
@nathanielrenner9540 8 лет назад
+Timothy Hinton it really boils down to the type of material that is used to make the wire, and if the conductor in the wire is advertised size. Cheaper wire tends to have thicker insulation to make it appear to be the proper size conductor, when really it's just thick insulation.For a fairly low powered set of speakers, you don't need to go all out, but you don't want to buy the cheap copper tinned aluminum crap from autozone either. I prefer ofc (oxygen free copper) because it holds up well to the elements, and has low resistance. Everything 1gtasanadreasc said is absolutely correct (which I applaud you sir nice to know some people like the technical side of car audio). If you want to get an idea of standards for power handling look up the American wire gauge (awg) website and they list what size conductors you should use for what current draw. This is where you need to know ohms law to do the appropriate calculations to determine the correct wire size you need for your application.

Presuming they aren't live or interfering with the reassembly of anything, there is no harm in leaving the factory wiring there. However, there is also no harm in removing the factory wiring if you would prefer to. Personally, I would remove the factory wiring presuming it wouldn't be too difficult, but that's just me.

The amp I want to run them to is a 300 watt rms 4-channel. Are speakers usually rated in pairs or by individual speaker? If they are individually rated then will the amp be powerful enough?

My headunit is the Sony-MEX-XB100BT that has 5v pre-amp outputs (front, rear, and sub). For my sub setup i have a 3000 watt mono block amp that uses 4 gauge wire. My speakers are currently being powered by a single 4 channel 1200 watt marine compact amp. My speakers are 30 watt RMS and 160 watt peak with 4ohms each. There is currently 4 speakers but looking to add 4 more speakers (total of 8). I am not getting enough sound from my speakers when out on the water at high speeds. I am looking into getting new amps to power these 8 speakers. What amp(s) do you recommend for these speakers? should i go with 2 amps or an 8 channel? I don’t want to overpower these speakers, i want to try to get the loudest sound with minimal to no distortion. These speakers will be hooked up to a 4ohm load wired in parallel. if you need any more information please let me know.

So, the wiring harness plugs directly into the back of your aftermarket radio and already has a specific AWG wire coming off the harness (Maybe 18 awg?). Are you saying that there is a way to change out the wire on the harness to a difference AWG and run wires from that harness to the speakers? Please respond directly to this message so it doesn't get lost with the rest of the comments. Thanks!

Ricardo Figueroa to be clear the speakers have harnesses to but you will bypass those.
@3dPrintingMillennial
@3dPrintingMillennial 7 лет назад
Ricardo Figueroa that's unnecessary. What these dummies fail to explain is that you should upgrade your speaker when using an external amp. That way more power can flow to your speakers, you lower your risk of burning up wires, and slightly lower the stress on the amp. On the other hand, the benefit from replacing speaker wire from the head unit to the speakers only comes from the fact that you'll have less voltage loss at that same distance. Your power won't actually increase. Instead, it will just allow your speakers to see closer to the same amount of power as it would if the connection was inches away from the head unit and not feet. To use an example: your head unit puts out 25wrms per channel. Your voltage at the back of the head unit is measuring 22v (just as an example). By the time it has run through 30 ft of 22 gauge speaker wire, the voltage at the terminal is now 15v (again, just an example). Now, if you change to 12 gauge speaker wire, you'll still get 22v at the head unit (or harness in your case) but now at the exact same distance, the voltage measurement at your speaker is now 21v. So your power didn't truly increase but the thicker wire allows more power to reach the terminal, which without an in depth explanation, is taken as a "power increase". So in summary: adding thicker wire from the harness to the speaker terminal will minimize your voltage loss. Adding thicker wire from the actual soldering connection within the head unit will make nearly no difference and isn't worth the risk nor trouble. If you're running an external amp, it wouldn't matter anyway because the signal is coming through RCA and I'm sure you're going to run the thickest wire you can from your amp to your speaker, just like everyone else. Hope that helps or helps anyone else that is wondering the same.

I'm looking to replace the speaker wire in my new install. Am I correct to say I run new speaker wire to all the speakers to the speaker output of the amp. I then take the RCA to the head unit? If that's correct what do i do with the factory wiring? Can I just leave it there in place and not use it? Second question I have is what about my wiring harness at the back of the head unit, do I need to cut all the old speaker wire away from that? Thanks

@ixionn563
@ixionn563 5 лет назад
@@Grimx0000 The Purple-Green-Gray-White pairs coming out of the back of the head unit are your speaker wires, your new wires would run to the corresponding pair. Your head unit's installation manual should tell you which color goes where, but the standard is purple right rear, green left rear, gray right front, white left front. Of course the black wire in each pair is your negative.
@limtk55

Likely factory wires are sufficient. Unless you're going to upgrade with an amp that pumps 100-125 RMS to your speakers.

@@ixionn563 What about a pair of 6x9 that are positioned behind the backseats? How do I connect new 16guage speaker wire I bought to those speakers and then all the way to the front of my Honda Civic Coupe to my Sony Mex GS820BT?
@ixionn563
@ixionn563 4 года назад
@@Grawnster I assume you only have front speakers and you are adding these speakers in? Either way, the green/black and green wire pair from your head unit wires to your back left speaker. The purple/black and purple wire pair wires to your back right. You will need to run the 16 gauge speaker wire from each of those pairs to the corresponding speaker. You will likely need to remove a few plastic panels along the interior to safely tuck your speaker wire away. Your head unit if you still have the manual, it should have the full wiring color guide in it. If those 6x9s are stock speakers you shouldn't have to run wire, it should be in your adapter harness if you bought the correct one. If you do choose to run wire you may need quite a bit to make it all the way from your radio in the dash to your rear 6x9 speakers. Hope this helps.

Im running a JL 12" TW3 with a slash series 600 watt mono amplifier and am worried about my Battery dying at meets if i don't turn the car over and let it run every 10 minutes. What brand and types of batteries do you recommend and what kind of secondary batteries can you recommend that are a small form factor for limited space applications such as a MINI Cooper?
@nathanielrenner9540
@nathanielrenner9540 8 лет назад
It shouldn't be a problem provided you installed the amplifier correctly. For the amplifier to draw "power from the battery it needs to power sources, one wire to the positive on the battery, and the other wire to a ignition source wire (a wire that only has power when the car is turned on). Usually people just use the power Antenna wire from the back of their head units as the "remote" lead.
@peshno13
@peshno13 8 лет назад
You misunderstand the issue, when i play my Subwoofers for 20 minutes the car will not start. Because the Amplifier draws power from the Battery. Which is not being charged when the car is not on. So was just looking for a second opinion on what they recommend .
@nathanielrenner9540
@nathanielrenner9540 8 лет назад
+Hunter8511 I understand completely what you are saying. If your playing the subwoofer with the car off (key in the acc position, motor not idling), of course it won't start. Your battery in your car is designed to start the car, not power an aftermarket 600 watt anything. You need a deep cycle battery (or a few) if you plan on playing the stereo for extended periods with the car off. Now If you pull the keys out and the car is off, but the amplifier still draws power, it is not installed properly. Car amplifiers need two power sources to function. One comes from the battery(s) in the car, the other comes from an ignition source (activated when the car is turned on). Hope this helps!

I had the same issue with proper install and put a Red Top car battery in and ran an extra 4 gauge power cable from positive terminal to alternator and removed factory battery ground from battery and installed a new ground for battery with a 1 gauge to new chassy location and it really helped for me. You can also do this to supplement the engine block ground (different chassy location again). That was 3 vehicles ago and ever since I only use Red Top batteries and they have yet to let me down and I live above 9,000 feet in CO by the way so I can't take chances with my car dying. No need for aux battery and I run 4x the power

@diversify210
@diversify210 7 лет назад
A bad speaker, a bad channel on your deck, or a loose connection. If you have a factory bose or JBL system then the factory amp have a bad channel in which case things get a little more complicating. Easiest way to tell if its the speaker is just to unhook the speaker that isnt working and hook a speaker that you know works up to it. It can be any speaker. If the speaker works then you know you have a bad speaker in which case you will have to replace both of them because they are sold in pairs. To make sure its not just a faulty connection you can use some spare speaker wire to run directly from the deck to the speaker that isnt working. If the speaker works then you know you have a faulty connection somewhere in which case you can either spend time trying to flag down the bad connection in the factory wiring or just run a new speaker wire to that speaker. To test to see if you have bad channel on the deck. You will have to pull the deck out. Unhook the channel that is not working and one channel that you know is working. Hook the channel you know is working to the speaker wire that isnt working. If the speaker starts to work then you know you have a bad channel on the deck in which you will have to purchase a new deck. For someone with the experience it would be fairly easy to flag down the problem with a speaker that isnt working. With no experience the task can be a bit daunting as you will have to remove the dash panel for the deck, door panel of the speaker that isnt working.

Any electrical hardware store will have the type of connector you need in order to run new wire(s) to the molex connector (molex connector is the technical term for the little plastic things that plug into the back of your head unit). If your talking about actually inside the head unit don't waste your time. It takes a lot of skill with a soldering iron to solder wires to a solid state control (the green board inside your head unit). I'm not trying to knock your skills in anyways I'm just saying it's really hard and easy to mess up. If that is the case send your head unit to the manufacturer for service, or buy a new head unit. Hope this helps! 😀👍✌️

It's best to use 0 awg to the door speakers, that way you don't limit that amount of current that can travel, you want to give it plenty of space. Use brass wire too, it may be expensive but you'll be able to enjoy the music a lot more, it really helps horn instruments.
