I have thousands of lights on my house in San Diego and yes it does rain here, usually a few times in December. When it does rain, it always shorts the same circuit which has lights for the bushes and trees. I never tape the lights, but I'll try pointing the female ends down this year. Another thing that I'll try, is to limit the number of consecutive lights plugged into each other.

I had a snow build up and it began to short out. I only noticed that the wire was hot and was steaming when I looked at it one day. Now I tape the ends tight.

This may be what I’ve been doing wrong for years. I always trip there GFI’s. Going to do the tape-free approach next season. Thank you for the info.

Ok, if you're not taping your ends, do you use any kind of electrical spray or grease? My lights trip the GFI will the slightest bit of rain and i have made sure all the plugs are off the ground and not setting in water.

What spacing do you use for your Christmas lights? 4”, 6”, 8”?

If I don’t tape mine they go out. I’ve never had a problems when I tape mine and I’m in a very humid climate

I was very interested in this video as I have taped and not taped. We live in Illinois and often get thaws or rain between Black Fri ( when I start Xmas Lights and the last day of Jan when I shut them off for good ). When I did not tape them sometimes during these thaws I would losse parts of my lights so I started taping every single connection throught all my mant strings. Yes I do go through a ton of ectrical tape - just afraid of loosing part or all of one of my zones. Nothing worse when the lights come on and some do not come on. I would rather not believe me as it takes hours longer but just worried that here it is in crappy weather and I'm out putzing - trying ti figure out what is wrong. Very frustrating. Any feedback would be greatly apprecitted. Thank You Kelly

With C9 on gutter/ roof line can you just tape the end of the wire on an end run instead of putting a female plug on.

Can you cut the line on the small led light string you have in this video like you can on spt1 or 2 and make custom lengths?

Is aluminum foil good on outside christmas lights, why I ask because one string of the lights the fuse on the lights string will blow

I twist saran wrap several inches around the plugs where they are joined......big duh, it is so simple.
