Should I use a queen excluder under my honey supers?

Having a cold front move into Southern Louisiana in late July is as much a common occurrence as the Dirt Rooster finding a queen while doing a cut out.....unless his dad points her out to him. And with the unlikelihood of either one of those events happening, we actually got a cold front move all the way down here at the tail end of July, a very welcome oddity while enduring daily temps in the upper 90's for weeks. To celebrate this welcome reprieve, I decided to finish cleaning our honey supers that were stacked on the back porch of the honey house.
The main reasons to clean the supers was to collect the wax cappings, remove the propolis from the edges of the boxes. and most importantly, to separate frames that only had honey in them from frames that had honey and brood laid in them. The reason this was important to do is because the wax moths prefers comb that brood had been laid in to comb that only honey was stored in. By separating the two types of frames, there would be less damage to the drawn out comb.
It was while separating out the frames and counting the number of frames that brood had been laid in compared to ones that only honey was stored in, that my reasons for not using queen excluders got confirmation.
Now I'm sorry every video I post is not an action packed wrangling adventure, but sometimes, for me, taking a break from all the wrangling and the bee stings is a welcome relief.... just like that cold front was. Oh yeah, you might want to stay and check out the very end of the video, I think you will be amused. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

It never gets old playing pranks on unsuspecting kids. That's so fun. My brother still does the one where he says "what you got on your shirt there" and points to your shirt. You absent mindedly look down and he boops your nose. That one is as old as the hills. One day they will get wise to you Mr Ed. Kids are so fun. Thanks Jeff for the great video. I love the "what's on your shirt" trick, and I will play it if I am given the right opportunity. No doubt about it, there is a very dark side to me, but it's only used for fun. Where I live it's just soy beans and corn. I never see honey bees. I have kept some old apple trees going just for the pollinators. I will probably never keep bees here because of this. However, I keep watching 628DR and you because it's interesting. Thanks so much!

Mono crops are one of honey bees worst food sources. For most living things, a diversity in diet is essential to proper development. A single source diet will ultimately lead to unhealthy conditions. Even though the conditions are very unfavorable for you to keep bees yourself, I'm very grateful that you take the time to watch my wrangling adventures. Until the next one, God's peace. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff I have often thought-considering the amount of support farmers get from taxes "maybe" they should be required to plant diverse plants (not crops) for the pollinators based on acreage, strategically planted to break up mono-cultures. Thank's for your time!

Of course I'm reporting MY numbers, and this may not be the case for other bee keepers. The old trick bee box. It makes me smile every time. I never have used a honey exclu.., I mean queen excluder and I don't ever intend to. I have seen them used on hives and I felt sorry for the workers struggling to get through the queen barrier. Not only is the progress of the bees slowed down but their wings are worn out prematurely. I also noticed that the bees begin to propolize the openings of the excluder which adds unnecessary work for the house bees. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to make this video.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 4 года назад
There are many people that do use excluders, and if you have a Flow Hive, you have to use them. If you don't the queen will try and lay in the plastic flow frames and what a mess that would be.For me, it is not a good fit, and like you, I think it makes to much work for bees as well as damaging them prematurely. Also, when I did use them early on in my bee keeping days, I still had the queen lay in the honey supers, and I was using metal excluders, not the cheap plastic ones. God's peace Marty. Mr. Ed

You may find a customer for beeswax with anyone who does leather work. I do leather work and have a small block of beeswax. I use wax for finishing edges on leather. I have a round short piece of a wooden broom handle with several different sizes of rounded grooves I use in a bench top drill press. I rub wax on the edge of leather and use the drill press to smooth the edges. The heat generated melts the wax and I get a nice shiny smooth surface on the edges.

@@JeffHorchoff Back in the late 60's, my hippie mentor told me that honey is nature's antibiotic and I've found that to be true. The medical community advises against it as it may cause an infection. You look pretty cute in your little apron!! 😉😉 LOL!! Seriously though, are there special things that have to be done with the bees during the winter months? We had more snow last weekend. Only about 4 inches. But it was enough to make the front walk slipery and I found out the hard way when I went out to get the mail. I've had a sore shoulder for a week now. Mold, maybe this will help. I am also in Louisiana and wax dip boxes. I have a tank that can dip two boxes side by side. Before I start dipping I add a quart of copper nap. to the wax. I let it cook for a few hours at 175. Then cook the boxes for 15-20 min at 175. If you don’t want the copper some of my friends say that double dipping keepers the mod to a min. Do your regular dip then pull the box let it set a few min then put back into the was for only a min then pull. This puts a heavy coat of was on the wood.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 4 года назад
Thank you so much for the information Justin, it makes sense. I'm no fan of chemical in or around by hives, so the copper nap would not be a good fit for me, but double dipping makes sense. If you are going to the Louisiana Bee Association Bee Convention in December, it's in Alexandria, I'll be one of the speakers there, make sure you introduce yourself. Also, if you wanted to dip boxes as a side line, you could have lots and lots of customers, there is a strong demand for that type of box. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Also, I didn't know that it's where the queen has laid...that attracts the moths...thanks for that lesson. I'm about 9 months into my first year and at almost 62, I'm getting a late start on my bee education. My friend and our brother Brett has helped me too, I thank God for sending him. But I owe a debt of gratitude to you, my favorite teacher. My greatest debt is to Jesus, that suffered a cruel death on the cross of Calvary for my sins and those of the entire world. Bless God forever, His love overwhelms me. And....Thank You Jesus!!

By having the frames exposed to daylight, the wax moth will for the most part leave them alone. There are lots more places where it's dark and they can go about their business undetected and undisturbed. Exposing the frames to daylight is not the perfect fix, but it is a very, very good deterrent of wax moth infestations. Christ's sacrifice won my salvation, I can never repay the debt. Thank you Jesus! God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

This is interesting. Could you describe your setup a bit more specifically? Is it that you have 3 deeps without excluders, and the queen only lays really in the bottom 1 or 2 deep boxes? Is the 7% you get the result of taking from all the hives, the few frames that the queen lays in above that bottom 1 or 2 deep boxes in each hive?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 4 года назад
I run 3 deep supers, 2 brood supers, and 1 honey super. Between the 2 brood supers and the one honey super there is NO queen excluder. Having 2 deep supers as brood boxes, the queen will stay in those 2 boxes about 90% of the time. With the 620 frames I spun honey from, it was only 7%, but from those 7%, 5% had brood laid in them, they emerged, and then the bees backfilled the cells. Only 2% of 620 frames had active brood in it when I pulled the boxes, and this was swapped for honey frames from the second brood box because I run ALL deeps. Because only 2% of the total honey frames had active brood in them when the boxes were pulled, the use of excluders, in my opinion, is not justified. Thanks for watching, and in case you did not know, I post a new video every Friday. Hope to hear from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed

There are many other bee wranglers and keepers posting videos and there are a lot of good ones out there. My suggestion, keep on looking and learning. When you hear something that you can agree with, try it out in your yard. Remember, there is not only one way of keeping bees, develop and perfect your style and that's how you become a happy bee keeper. Questions are good, so go ahead and ask. I would also suggest you find a bee club in your area and join it, it may be your best source of info because it pertains to keeping bees in the immediate area you are in. Thanks for watching. Originally, the boxes had contained all our frames of honey which we processed, link below. After the honey was removed from the frames, the wet frames were placed outside for the bees to clean them off. @JeffHorchoff

It's always a good idea to get your drawn comb back into a working hive, the moths will get into it. However, by exposing the comb to the sun, allowing daylight to filter through the frames, it greatly reduces the moth infestation. I kept drawn honey supers out since July, with very little moth damage. Of course, there was no brood comb in the supers which makes all the difference. I'm in total agreement for not using an excluder, it is not necessary. My honey frames are always new. I use plastic foundation for all my frames, it's just my preference. I don't know much about a honey press, but if I were to build one, I'd use a hardwood to build it. Hi, do you use 2 Breeding Boxes under the Supers? Greetings from Germany
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 4 года назад
I run 2 deep supers for all my brood boxes, and then another deep super for the honey box. Thanks for watching and asking. By the way, I post a new video every Friday, and I sure hope you will check some of them out. Till the next one, God's peace. Mr. Ed

when I have my bees clean up the super, they strip everything including the wax. why are they doing this?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 4 года назад
I can not answer your question. I have never experienced that situation, and I have been allowing bees to clean my honey supers for over 20 years. If you do find an answer, I'd love to hear it. Thanks for watching. God's peace Debra. Mr. Ed

Hello Mister JEFF . Est ce que tu refonds la cire d'opercule qui est de très bonne qualité pour faire des feuilles de cire pour faire les cadres ?? Je fait mes cires comme cela car la cire est pure Bye bye mon ami et beaucoup de joie
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 4 года назад
M. Ed

I do build a lot of my own equipment, but boxes are not one of them. I buy precut, unassembled boxes and put them together myself. Thanks for watching. God's peace Allan. Mr. Ed
