Today I want to answer a question that I get asked all the time.
“Should I workout when I’m sore?”
I actually saw a video on this topic the other day by another RU-vidr and it blows my mind the amount of misinformation that is out there. In the video I watched this person answer the question by rambling for a while, throw in some fancy words here and there and for some reason everybody believed what he said!
In the end, the stuff he said didn’t any make sense or really amount to any conclusion at all. This is what really gets to me Nation. You all need to be able to tell the difference between real life experience and research knowledge versus people who know how to ramble and babble about a topic for 10 - 15 min, but never really give you any concrete information.
But enough venting and back to the topic at hand.
Today we are going to talk about DOMS, which stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.
DOMS: Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
Let’s say you hit the gym ultra-hard or just came back to exercising after being out of the gym for a while and about a day to three days after your workout you start feeling sore. This feeling of pain is what we call DOMS and it is caused by all the microtears and inflammation that happens to your muscle tissue as a result of your workout.
The process of repairing your muscles is what causes them to grow in size and get stronger, so this is all normal and a part of the process.
But should you go back to the gym if your muscles are still sore?
The answer is: It depends on how bad it is.
Are You In Uncomfortable Pain?
If you’re in a lot of pain and it feels like something is wrong, obviously you should not go to the gym and you should go see a doctor. Most of us know our bodies well enough to know when something is not right. But this is not what I want to focus on.
Are Your Muscles Sore To The Touch?
If you didn’t injure yourself but the muscle is very sore to the point that it hurts when you touch it or causes you to not have full range of motion, than my answer is:
Wait another day to work that muscle group.
The key point here is do not train the muscle group THAT IS SORE. I’m not saying skip the gym, I’m saying let this specific muscle recover and focus on another area for that day.
For example, if my legs are killing me I still train that day but I will adjust my schedule to work something like biceps. There is no need to rush the process because if you’re experiencing DOMS and can't perform full range of motion on your exercises, you’re not going to have the most productive workout anyway.
Another thing to keep in mind is that if your muscles are working on repairing the tears you’ve inflicted on your previous workout, creating more tears and damage will only disrupt the recovery process.
So the bottom line, rest THAT area a little longer.
Do You Have Light Muscle Soreness?
If you’re feeling reasonably sore, but it’s not as drastic as the situation described above, it’s actually a good thing to go to gym and get the sore muscles moving again. Just be sure to take it easy on the weights!
This is not the time to go hardcore and try to hit a new personal record. What you want to do is hit some aerobic exercises and do some light lifting.
Activity in this case is good because it will increase the temperature in the area which increases oxygen flow and the flow of much needed nutrients to help heal the damaged area as well.
This blood flow is also good because it will help to take toxins away which were produced by the tears and subsequent inflammation of your muscle tissue.
So no excuses nation! Even when you’re extremely sore, you should still go to the gym!
It’s just a matter of figuring out how bad it is so you can decide if you can train the same area again or if you have to come up with a plan B to workout another part of your body.
Conclusion
Now knowing this, you might be thinking, if I workout but I don’t get sore, does it mean I’m not going to grow? Absolutely not! But I am going to talk about that in more detail in a future article!

So, not only did I have to struggle climbing my truck, I also had to battle the wind by holding the huge door open so it would not slam on me.. And I don't sit and drive all day, I actually have to climb in and out a few times a day, lol.. No mercy for thy legs.

Depends on the scenario. Determine which is true, and see corresponding answer: A.) Your pain is injury not DOMS. NO B.) Your pain is DOMS, but is sore to the touch or when stretching. YES, but train different muscle group C.) Your muscles are a bit sore: YES, continue as normal, but try to train different muscle groups as you may disrupt the healing and growing process

For my personal experience, I gained an inch in my arms by doing an everyday biceps workout. I trained it on my 70% 1rep max for 10-15 reps for 3 sets of different bicep exercise every day. I felt the soreness on the 3rd day and still doing the same intensity and volume with no decrease in strength and number of reps. I do really gained more than an inch (measured after the swelling gone - not pumped - measured on the 4th day of rest after the 5 consecutive bicep days) I did it for the purpose of experimenting myself. BIG BIG BIG DOWNSIDE: I got a right wrist injury and it really hurt so bad and it lasted for 4 months until it's gone and it made me switch from straight barbell bar to an ez-bar. I do continue to do biceps exercise after a week of rest from those 5 consecutive bicep days but only using light weights and ez-bar. And to answer this question, training while on DOMS will not stunt the growth and the recovery, but the problem if you do it to the extent that you are going to mess up your joints then indirectly it is a NO NO.

I've found that a good low intensity workout like mowing my yard that makes me sweat a lot really helps to clear out the lactic acid. I've been doing legs one day, back the next and then chest the next day, followed by a rest day. I'd like to workout more but I feel like I need the rest day for my tendons to heal. I'm still making decent gains so guess I'm on the right track.

Omg, I just fell in love with a total stranger in less than 5 minutes! 😍 So I’m battling depression and weight gain. Went to the gym yesterday and cracked under 5 lbs dumbbells pressure... managed a 75% total workout... today I’m feeling sore and fatigued, it’s 7 pm and I feel I should go to bed, but the gym is still open. I fear if I skip the gym today, I’ll just fall right off the wellness wagon yet again, but due to this short video and the very convincing speaker, I’m gonna hit the gym even if I just walk on the treadmill for an hour and nothing else. Thanks for posting!

Really awesome video and discussion Scott. I think that's why I try to have a Push/Pull/Legs or something similar when having a routine because I'm letting my muscles rest. For instance, I did high volume with legs last night and they're very sore (the stairs at my house were a challenge to climb lol), so today I'm doing a push routine focusing on my chest and triceps. It's like you said, you just have to listen to your body.

Your video by far is the most cut to the chase video I have watched. Thank you for breaking it down in dummy version by not throwing in fancy words and making things more complicated than it is. Simple, workout your sore to keep it moving if it's not restricting and or do lighter weights or cardio. Sometimes beginners like myself feels that the sore will not go away for about a week and get lost on what we should do about the soreness, in turn, will rest for too many days. But this makes sense to not use the soreness as an excuse to not workout and definitely know your body

Great video Scott! Heard a lot of conflicting info on this subject and wondered what to believe. Question though, what do you think about training frequency? How often should a muscle be worked? Maybe a video on that subject would be cool? Just a thought bro and keep up the great work!
@ScottHermanFitness
@ScottHermanFitness 9 лет назад
Thanks JabezLifts . means a lot. As far as training frequency it really does depend on the person. For example, I have below average recovery.. its something I learned from my MyuscleGenes report. Needless to say I was not happy haha.. but because of this, and some other factors.. I was able to maximize my workouts by getting the right splits and volume down and I train each muscle once a week. However, others recover quickly and see more gains training muscles twice a week. I will write this down to dig into the science more for a cool video :) thanks for the suggestion!

Then after said year, vast a day and go into the gym at the evening. Work everybody body part till failure. Don't eat before bed. Wait 2 days. Now you know what DOMS are and that it is not the same as 'soreness'.

Great information. I am in the "back to the gym" crowd and felt MUCH better getting in and doing a lighter workout when sore. I also look forward to your video on working out and not getting that soreness and whether muscles are growing.

Finally a real answer. Im a climber and had my first practice yesterday and im super sore everywhere. I have a day off today and practice tommorow. Everyone just says the part about the tiny tears and that you should just rest. Thanks so much for such an informational video without all the bs.

Question: I read online that doing full body workouts (in other words, not doing specific muscle groups and doing several exercises over the whole body) helps burn body fat better than doing specific specific muscle groups. Is this true?

well, you will certainly burn more calories Windgrace . I have a lot of workouts like this on my channel for that exact reason :)

DOMS is a real thing, but in the first few weeks the soreness you are experiencing is most likely caused by the buildup of lactic acid which is a byproduct of anaerobic activity due to the poor conditioning of cells. That is why the first couple weeks is so much more painful, even though you usually train much harder after that period. It is fine to go to the gym in this state.
@ScottHermanFitness
@ScottHermanFitness 9 лет назад
Matthew Wakamatsu Lactic acid is not responsible for muscle soreness, this is an OLD SCHOOL belief. Bro-science if you will. Soreness is caused by the tears to your muscles and the subsequent inflammatory process that takes place. So no, it is not metabolic stress, it is muscle damage. If you took some time to watch the entire video and then did your own research to back up your claim you would have found this out on your own. The REASON why you are not sore after a couple weeks is because your body has adapted to the workout you are doing. Your body will always find the easiest way to perform movements to save energy which over time if always performing the same routine will result in a plateau. You need to switch things up every 4 - 6 weeks. Whether you change the entire workout, a few exercises, add supersets, burnsets, pyramids or even shorter rest periods. If you would like to learn more, join my community on www.MuscularStrength.com. We would love to help you out bro! #HTH
