I come to RU-vid and Instagram to escape reality. I don't want to hear about politics. The commenters that are pressuring influencers to speak up are looking for a fight. They are setting you (the influencer) up for a no win situation. No matter how you answer, you will enrage someone. It's an unfair setup. Why can't we have a space where it's about beauty and makeup? The world is depressing enough and there aren't a lot of places to escape to. We all deserve to find a space that makes us feel better.

People who want to control other people's content are not "brave" or virtuous. They lack boundaries. In fact, narcissist people are often drawn to "virtue signalling" as they love to feel better than other people and control them. People who truly care about things take action, not aim at someone's RU-vid channel about makeup

My take on this: many youtube content creators will say “this is my job”. Whether it is a full or part time job, there are still professional boundaries. I would consider it very unprofessional to voice my personal political opinions or to advocate for my causes in my workplace. I hope youtube creators would also set professional boundaries like that.

Agreed if it were democrats vs republicans regular shenanigans. But when you state that you’re against the mass killing is you saying you’re pro humanity. Charlotte I am so sorry that you went through that horrifying experience. This is the best non-makeup video I’ve seen in years. Personally I feel like if you really care about the content creator you won’t be demanding anything from them. It seems people are looking for a reason to get pissed off and bitch at someone. If I want to hear world news I’ll watch a newscaster, not an influencer. I don’t like political conversations but there is a time and place for it. In my humble opinion it’s not on makeup or nail content videos, which is what I enjoy. Thank you for speaking out on this subject. I love the people I follow for who they are and the joy I get from watching them, not their political affiliation. Just keep doing you!❤

To each their own.. but for me personally I'm sick and tired of seeing politics EVERYWHERE, I come to this space to learn about some nice cosmetics and get away from it all. If I want to know about politics, these would not be the channels I'd subscribe to. There are literally thousands of them with experts that can provide very different opinions and prospectives. People are unbelievable rude and I think the best is just to keep doing your thing and keep your channel neutral and trouble free. But again, to each their own..

Another thing I’ve heard people say is that as creators, it’s our responsibility to use our platforms to spread xyz message. But while content may be consumed in a casual and entertaining way by the viewer, we treat this as our job and seek to maintain a level of professionalism and respect that the rest of our subscribers expect. It’s our right if we want to separate our professional life from our own personal private beliefs. I wonder if a lot of this comes from us as a society having less and less real in-person community and so we seek that level of simpatico from the influencers we follow. To me it’s crazy to assume that everyone you follow is going to feel the exact way as you about everything. I’ve learned to make friends with all different views and we respect each other when we disagree.

During Covid I dropped all social media except YT. It was absolutely crushing to read what people were posting - some of whom were my own friends and family - all the while knowing my husband was working the front lines. In the beginning, before he had proper gear, I watched him walk out the door with a look on his face as if he was going off to war. Neither of us knowing if he would come home. Emotionally he's the strongest person I know and I've never seen that look of fear and dread on him before or since. What I learned from that is that I will no longer allow "reality" to creep into my safe space. If it does, I will disengage. YT is my escape from all the atrocities, negativity and hatred. To stay informed, I get my news from other sources but limit my exposure in order to remain emotionally sane. It seems to be an endless rant of absolutes and polarity with no grey areas anymore. The world has truly gone mad. Sadly I don't see things changing any time soon and if I lose this space, you will likely find me in the looney bin.

As a COVID critical care nurse that worked the front lines, too, I truly appreciate this comment! 😊 The misinformation spread during the height of it was unbelievable, and so many deaths I saw could have been prevented if people could have just stopped being so self-involved and/or living in their own media echo chambers. I truly believe we’re responsible to educate ourselves on both sides of an argument and to seek out informed sources - I will never understand the current anti-expert/education sentiment so prevalent currently. And I totally agree that we need safe spaces that are only positive and not so controversial/real-word ❤️

I completely agree. As a front line worker during COVID I had to take distance from comments to keep my sanity (and not start arguing). And now it’s like the extreem polarity we experienced then is repeating over and over again. It’s so tiring. So make-up/ RU-vid videos are my escape since then. But coming back to Charlotte: I didn’t see her comment then as a political view! As a mom I felt just as overwhelmed as her with that picture.

The most messed up part is people are pushing creators to speak purely to hear their own opinions echoed back to them. They don’t want yall to speak just to hear how you feel. They need to hear their exact same opinions on everything repeated by everyone they watch. It’s so bizarre. Just remember this is definitely the minority of people, they just happen to be a very loud minority. How can anyone expect every creator to be an expert on American politics, virology, and thousands of years of middle eastern politics??

This is so interesting. If a creator wants to speak about something they feel passionate about, i can understand it. However, to pressure and hound someone into share their personal views is outrageous. Noone needs to know what somebody's views are if they don't want to share them. And please, please do not take this the wrong way, but if i am watching a makeup review I genuinly come for this. If i want to know about something political, i look up some of those channels. But i love you covering this issue that is hurting more people than we even are aware of. Thank you Charlotte 😊

As someone who has two degrees in political science, I struggle when anyone comments on politics without substantial credentials to do so, just as I hate it when people comment and spread misinformation on health-related issues now that I have studied and work in healthcare. Plus, the US and UK tend to be so politically polarized that speaking about politics would be asking for more harassment and horrible hateful comments to come your way. If I were an influencer, I certainly wouldn’t go near the topic - if people want to hear about politics, they should consume media where people have signed up to talk about politics, not push other influencers to do so. I love Elyse Meyers, and given that she has so much anxiety, I can’t imagine how anyone who truly likes her and her content would push her to discuss things she’s not comfortable with. I am first and foremost a believer that people should be allowed to think and say whatever they want to, no one has the right to police that (unless, of course, someone were exhorting violence).

It's called democracy and I really prefer this political system compared to others. Said that, we need to be better educated about how to be active and engaged citizens and better control of political manipulation that we are subject to. It is problematic that we have shallow understanding when, in reality, we can never escape politics.

I don't condone bullying on any form whether in real life or online. If I have a choice, I would prefer not to financially support someone who is racist, sexist, exploitive and does not obey the rule of law. Let's face it, subscribing, liking and watching is supporting that content creator's lifestyle and livelihood. That said, I think most of us who share a community share similar vibes and often values.

Many people today do not understand boundaries. Questions have become so intrusive. I don't watch beauty RU-vid to learn peoples' sexual or political orientation. My answer to these questions is "none of your business". We seem to be surrounded by toddlers shouting Why, Why, Why ; followed by Me, Me, Mine. I subscribe to Elyse and agree with your description of her. Her being forced away from her job and supporting her family is abhorrant. Thank you, Charlotte, for your bravery and compassion. Perhaps we need to come up with a troll response emoji, that means, be quiet you mean spirited boob.

I agree with what u had to say, and I also appreciate u giving a nod to the reality in Gaza. Because it does feel disjointed; from watching videos from Gaza and switching to other types of videos and it’s completely surreal that the reality is soo far apart. And it blows my mind that anyone can get triggered from a clip of children coloring (I saw that video weeks ago and it also made me 😭). Watching the University students demand a ceasefire and de-occupation it makes me believe that the only way this stops is us showing our outrage at the lack of govt listening to its constituents. If this is the level u feel comfortable at that’s fine. It’s not nothing, it restores my faith in humanity. Anyway thanks for this video.

Charlotte this is one of your BEST videos ever, maybe one of the best videos I've seen in the beauty space by anyone, EVER!! 🏆👏THANK YOU for this conversation! You brought up a LOT of thoughts that I have circled around but never gone that depth into, and you articulated it all so well!! I'm so sorry you got that abuse from sharing the video, that's horrifying to hear and to have had to deal with. I'm someone who change camps: I used to want everyone to speak out and declare publicly their political views, believing it was their 'duty'. At the time I was in the headspace of 'if they're not with us, they're against us'. I took all the politics very personally, if someone had a different political view to me it felt as if they were invalidating ME and personally against ME. I've done a complete 180 since then and now I want my social media to be a safe place where I can escape the heaviness of world events. Caring for my mental health has become a big priority. I also don't see the world so black and white now, I see a lot more grey and nuance in arguments. And i don't take it so personally when others have a different view. Thank you again for opening up this conversation, brilliant work xx

Charlotte, I appreciate this video and I think you raise a lot of interesting points especially the reasons why silence can feel like the safest option for peace of mind when being online especially in this professional setting. I want to share some of my personal perspective as a trans and queer person especially as you raise the question about what other contexts (ie service providers) we might want to know a person's political stances. I'm trans and queer person and there's a lot of people who don't believe I should exist, have access to basic rights, have a family, etc. It's a political hot topic for some people but for me it's a daily question of safety including *literal* bodily safety. What is just poltics to some can be very urgent to others and I think that's an important element to hold on to. It's also very meaningful to me and certainly beneficial to my experience of YT as an *escape* if I know someone like thinks I am valid and deserve equal rights. I think this is especially relevant for a lot of people who have bodies or experiences that are politicized in our world. Makeup for instance doesn't exisit in some separate bubble not impacted by racism. It's part of the picture and denying it's relevancy makes it harder for makeup to be accessible and to be an escape for all. I don't expect influencers to talk about racism in every video but I think acknowledging it when it comes up is valuable. In my opinion, it isn't an on/off switch whether or not to talk about politics. There are small implicit ways we do it all the time (not just big statements) and my wish for someone would be that they feel able to speak in a way they would look back upon and feel proud of. I believe we ideally would show up as people grounded in our values. Whatever that looks like.

This is so well said and I'm so sorry for the challenges you face on a daily basis. I personally feel its very privileged for some people to be able to say 'I don't want to think about politics' - they can't comprehend how those of us from a minority/marginalised background don't have the luxury of 'switching off' from it. Nor do they understand how much it means to know someone you follow and watch on a regular basis (and therefore admire) respects you as an individual and human being.

@maddiemcnugget1076
@maddiemcnugget1076 5 месяцев назад
I can agree with no politics, but I always hated when people blindly add religion onto this. Culture and religion play with each other a lot. Of course, some of it has been de-religion-ified (Santa Claus, Easter bunny, the belief that Hannukah is just "Jewish Christmas" when it isn't). Of course nobody should be like "F you Catholics, I'm Protestant" or something of similar vein, but you cannot expect someone to not be "religious" just for your comfort. Like if a woman is a hijabi, she will still wear it during her make up videos because she knows men can and will watch her videos. Perhaps you don't see this as being "religious", but someone who believes "no religion" also includes those who wear religious articles in public (of course this prob someone who lives off of bad faith stereotypes of Muslims). But yeah, I think people should express their faith IF THEY WANT, regardless of other people's comforts. In fact, I used to be like "ew no religion in my content", but kind of learned that it's inevitable for better or for worse. A lot of people are dumping their religious experiences on the internet whether positive or negative. There's many other content creators out there so if one makes you uncomfortable, there will be someone else to fill their space to some extent.

Good conversation. I think the impetus for this goes deeper and farther than you’ve identified with all the drama that went down a few years ago. This is something that is happening in just about every niche online “community.” It’s far more violent and demanding in the knitting sphere than in the beauty one. It’s one mob attack after another there. The drama never ends. One thing I always say is that married couples don’t even agree on every single thing, so why are we expecting strangers in the internet to agree with us on every single thing?

I work in a hair salon for over 25 years, let me tell you, people come and want to talk about politics, they want to know my opinion and shove their opinions to me. From the beginning I made it very clear - I don’t talk about politics or religion and I stick to it, I just refuse, otherwise it’s the situation of damn you do, damn you don’t. As for RU-vid and particularly this beauty content - that’s what I’m here for - for a beauty content, it is indeed my escapism, I don’t want to know anyone’s opinions, so please don’t fall for any pressure, keep creating what we love you’re doing, you’re so fabulous and so loved!

YES hair stylists and salon owners get this pressure A LOT. It’s so interesting it happens to overlap with the beauty/parasocial relationship aspect

Honestly, I would prefer that creators keep their opinions to themselves. I don’t mind if they express their opinion initially and tell us why they feel that way, but unfortunately, it never ends at that point. There is a beauty creator that I followed for years. I loved her content and she was always able to find the little hidden gems to share with her audience. Unfortunately, she took a stance on an issue a few years ago and decided that she was only going to support brands that shared the same viewpoint. She let us all know that not only was she going to cut off brands that didn’t share her view but we should unsubscribe if we disagreed. I am not going to say what the issue was because I don’t want to get sued. Her content started going down hill rapidly as she ranted about losing subscribers and not 😮understanding why everyone didn’t feel the same way she did. The slightly hilarious thing is that she couldn’t articulate why that was her view. I think she was trying to be edgy and now her channel is on life support. I think that’s why our moms told us to never talk about religion or politics 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I find this really difficult as I don’t usually want to put pressure on someone to comment on something they don’t know about but when it comes to certain situations I really do want to know. Voting is a private matter but politics underlies issues other than which political party or candidate you support. I don’t want to be supporting someone who is racist, sexist, homophobic, a bully or condones war crimes / human rights abuses. These issues are, for me, about basic human decency and I suppose I am guilty of assuming that this is the case for everyone. I have been severely let down in the last week by a beauty content creator that I enjoyed watching making an incredibly upsetting, racist post on their Instagram. I think things like this are why people want to know - we are giving time and money (adverts, links. etc.) to creators and, in the same way as we choose not to support certain businesses, we also want to make a choice about the type of creators we support. It’s exactly what you say about assuming that people are ‘nice’ For me, it has to be about more than just enjoying their content - I want my money to go towards people who have morals, ethics and values.

I understand what you are saying. What I have found is that in time, the people you watch often reveal exactly who they are without having to bluntly tell you. I am also pretty good at reading between the lines. When attitudes are revealed that offend my personal or moral values, I unfollow.

An actor's job is to act, a singer's job is to sing, a makeup youtuber's job is to post videos about makeup, etc. Outside of what they are required to do it should be COMPLETELY up to them if they want to post or not. At the end of the day, this is their job and they are perfectly entitled to set boundaries for what they want to discuss while 'at work.' Reminds me of Ayo Edebiri when she got asked about her thoughts on Jeremy Allen White's Calvin Klein underwear ads and she said she was uncomfortable talking about it because this was a work function for her. Also, how have we gotten to a point where we are turning to entertainers for political content?

Appreciated hearing your thoughts. I have very strong feelings on world events and American politics (as an American) and will unfollow (or not give money to) someone who doesn't share my values, but I'm fine with people in the beauty space keeping their non-beauty thoughts to themseves if they choose to. (And I would just quietly go, never abuse the content creator!)

You nail it with calling out the entitlement. It's a special kind of audacity that makes a person believe they are entitled to know a person's political, religious, and personal beliefs. I think when people dont have a fully formed-or informed- opinion on something or would like to take time to consider things, it should be ENCOURAGED to keep mum, as vocal ignorance doesnt help anything.

Very well said. When I consider content creators like you who I don’t actually know in real life, I do however pick up on what I do need to know like you’re a very caring mother, you’re not racist, you’re not homophobic, you’re proud of being a woman, you wouldn’t endanger a stranger knowingly. Those are the things I need to know about someone’s character and if you follow someone for years those sorts of values always come out. Now if a RU-vidr said something I was hardline against then I unfollow and go about by day, abusing someone isn’t going to change their mind and we live in an age of information. I am someone who has a terribly stressful life everyday, I have a severely disabled little boy, RU-vid must be my release and escape or I’ll drown and I’m thankfully for this little corner of makeup and chats even though I can’t afford said products! Thankyou for not letting those awful people win.

I thought your video was well thought out and very balanced. I think a large part of the problem today is the outrageous entitlement that so many people have. They see someone on RU-vid or Instagram, follow them and instantly feel as if they “own” them. We live in a world of extreme opinions and that attitude is absolutely not needed on a beauty channel or a handcrafts channel or a nature channel - you get the point. While there are channels and “influencers” who just love to share their opinions on everything, I’m grateful for yours and others like it. 🙏🏻

That was a pre- internet conversation. She owned a grocery store. I can’t imagine what she’d think today.

Thank you for presenting this topic in a neutral way without being pushy about your personal beliefs on the issues. Personally, I do not want to know what makeup/beauty/lifestyle influencers believe on politics or current issues. They are entertainment for me. If I want political commentary, I go to other sources. Frankly, I could care less what the people I watch believe. I like them for their content. And whether they believe what I believe or the opposite, it makes no difference to me, unless they start shoving their beliefs down my throat. I can still like someone even if they don’t agree with me politically, etc. What happened to respecting the rights of others to have their own beliefs? Why is there so much hatred out there for people who don’t agree with you? I don’t get it. People demand tolerance for themselves but won’t give it to others. So much seems so one-sided. It’s sad. ❤

Thank you so much for speaking about this. Your commentary is always so insightful! I completely agree that there is no easy solution. Hearing about what you went through absolutely ripped my heart out. I am so sorry that you experienced that level of cruelty!!!!! It is important for people to understand that that is what happens bc I don’t think enough people are aware of that! I am a brand new creator and decided early on on my platform that I was going to state my beliefs to try to weed out People would have a problem with me early on. I chose to do that bc I know when I watch creators, I try to pick up on little inferences here and there to make up my mind about whether or not I want to support them and I just didn’t want people to have to make assumptions about me. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that that was absolutely futile, nothing is ever good enough and ppl who disagree aren’t just going to click away for the most part. For myself, at least I’ve come to the conclusion that there are things that I Feel that I can handle speaking about and things that I cannot. I think everyone has strengths and weaknesses and some people can take a topic like this and speak about it in a way that is helpful and there are people who can care just as much but not be able to do that. My husband and I are examples. we are both feel passionately about certain things, but he can have conversations with people in a calm collected way whereas I get too emotional and upset. It can be devastating to me. Not speaking on-line is not the same thing as not caring. In some instances people who can’t speak about things, Care the most! I believe in just doing my best. Not compromising my beliefs, but also understanding where I can and can’t be helpful and I extend the same grace to the creators that I follow!

This was a great video! I personally have very strong beliefs on many current world events and topics. When I want to talk or learn about those topics then I seek out creators whose values align with my own. However I can’t keep my own emotional health in a good place if that’s the only information I consume. I need to have an escape from the real world in the form of beauty and fragrance content. Listening to someone describe a fragrance or swatch a beautiful eyeshadow palette is a form of self care for me.

I would like to say that your experience with your Instagram post shocked me, but I am not surprised. I thought the post was lovely, but I have been on this planet a long time and know how evil human beings can be. And what you said about not demanding the same thing from your hair dresser fits right in with what I learned many years in Customer Service. Face to face, people will usually be respectful. On the phone, they feel the right to say anything they like to you. The same is true of social media. You can't see them so they say what they like. Keep doing what you are doing Charlotte and keeping your channel a safe place. It means so much to us.

I would never ask anyone to voice their opinions. Like you said, it’s best to vote with our actions and just unfollow when we realize someone doesn’t align with our core values; specially cause harassing someone wouldn’t make them change their mind anyways, it’s pointless. However, like you mentioned, there’s so much happening all the time and there’s no way to know about them all. I *personally* would rather see ppl speak about the fact that they see it happening and are doing their best to learn about it. Like you did w the Palestine situation, you have no idea how much I grew to respect you from that. Because while someone may be coming here for entertainment, they very well could be interested in a particular issue that you’re acknowledging and end up wanting to help out for the side they agree with because that’s sth that resonates with them. At the end of the day it’s not about giving your opinion, it’s about acknowledging it so the awareness about it spreads. There are ppl who have phds and yrs of experience who we get to choose to listen to as a viewer. No one should expect a RU-vidr to fix world problems. I think that’s where ppl come from when they talk about using your platform, is to just raise awareness, not to give a stance, cause every thing is so multifaceted that it just wouldn’t be right anyways imo… Again, I personally would never ask someone to speak about these issues, but it definitely makes me want to support someone more if I see them acknowledging sth I deeply care about. That’s my rant on this lol

I personally don't want my makeup content creators to divulge their political opinions. I do love how you share your knowledge and understanding of things happening in the world though. Very interesting topic. I definitely agree with you, that we feel certain kinship and start identifying ourselves with creators that we follow and watch so often. It is in a human nature to be curious and want to know as much as possible about people they feel they are close to. On the other hand, I don’t agree on every matter that means a lot to me with some of my best friends in my real life. I’ve learned to respect their opinions, because we all have different reasons and life experiences that have shaped how we react and how we feel about different things. Besides, we all have changed our mind on something at some point in our lives. Just because someone fells a certain way about something today, may not be the case tomorrow. Why demand to know things we have no right to know about other people, just so we can judge them for what they say they stand for? They may have reasons you will never understand, but it’s not your place to ‘expose’ anyone on the internet of all places. Charlotte don’t give in please and don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing. I’m sad that this has happened to you and respect that you are speaking up on such a sensitive topic. ❤
