Thanks bro, best video . I always knew weighted balls were a no no for my 7 year old. But didn’t know the in-depth reason why.

I'm a first-year coach at a Charter school high school. What would you advise me to do to build a high schooler's arm strength and avoid arm fatigue? What work out work the best

The beardless look is quite shocking at first. And I hope things work out for Little Johnny #2

I have eased my softball team into weighted balls. Started 2 months just long toss to get arms in shape. Then started adding weighted balls at only 75% effort. Still only 75% effort but adding more different throws as we are now 6 months in. I’ve had EVERY girl gain 4mph and 2 gained 8-9mph.

"Be an athlete first" type advice was some advice a couple of my kid's coaches tried to tell me. I acknowledged it, but stayed on weighted balls. Made it through no injuries but certainly saw that plateau. Now at 14 he works out a lot more, does less weighted, more long toss, better diet and all around performs better. When he was young - it was never the heavier balls - mostly the light ones used, there was upside to it for sure, but to your point - be an athlete first and then add on.

My 11yr olds pitching coach recommended weighted balls at very low intensity in order to feel the mechanics more

I think a better analogy than cars and tires is trying to mount a cannon on a bicycle and calling it a tank.

My 11yr old is 5’2, 125 lbs. When do I know he’s ready for weighted ball training?

I've been training my 13u lefty since he turned 10. He's prolly going to touch 75 mph this spring/ summer. My advice is to strengthen his back and legs as strong as he is capable of. Strength and stability over just about everything else in in the beginning. Don't get caught up in heavy ball programs this early. And if he absolutely wants to throw heavy, supervise and regulate distance and amount he's throwing. You have plenty of time yet.

See my comment on my 10u softball team. Once I got their arms in shape with just long toss, I added weighted balls little by little but only at 75% effort. 6 months in, it has been extremely successful. 4-9mph gains in 6 months. As they grow older, we will gradually add more throws and more intensity.
