How on earth can we judge a 10 who had to play outside of THAT performance from 1-9? Love JVP and he’ll come again but he was woeful yesterday. The pack were ANNIHALATED in the breakdown, the tackle, and in contact. Marcus Smith cannot be judged on yesterday- he was a passenger in a demolition job quite frankly. We could have had Dan Carter at 10 and we’d still have been absolutely pummelled. Superb from the French and what a team they have heading into RWC 2023 at home.

England still think their forwards can power their way through other teams to win. That may have been the case in the past when their large pool of playing numbers always turned up a few beefy monsters. Things have changed now where modern nutrition, strength and conditioning training and sports science have leveled the playing field for smaller nations, and now it's down to pure skill set and creativity. This is where England lacks, having genuine creative ball players. They do exist in England but they don't get picked because the English championship still leans towards playing the raw power game.

They're correct, in that the 10 was the least of our problems. We were beat convincingly in the forwards, especially the back row and at the breakdown, then the 9, rvp, exasperates things by being too damn slow, so we're already under immense pressure when smith gets it. Then you look at danty and fickou, dominating Lawrence and Slade. No 10 in the world would have had a good game in an England shirt yesterday. But give credit where credits due, the French we're magnificent, every part of their game was firing! Fair play to them.👍

@@Melchett4805 Russell wouldn't have made any significant difference to England today. This was a team failure. Farrell at least gives you experience and leadership. This team fell apart mentally and the decision making on the penalties was atrocious (if you kick those two penalties you at least are still in the game at half time). Genge is not ready to captain this team in Dublin with a championship on the line for Ireland, so if Borthwick has any sense he will start Farrell.

There's an argument to be made that Smith at 10 allowed the French to repeatedly expose and pummel his channel, which they did. Smith made tackles, but he always lost ground on the gainline. Smith wasn't the reason England lost- that's on the forwards primarily; also the backs- but if Farrell had started, I doubt the French would have felt they could exploit that area as much as they did.
