I was a MOUT Instructor back in my day. I’ll tell you honestly that most people live in Towns, suburbs or Cities not up in the mountains so It’s imperative that militia teach MOUT because that’s where the fight is going to happen.

Cities are the best battlefield for irregular fighters vs a conventional army. Too many corners to watch, hard to avoid collateral (unless you're a scumbag zionist), and you are forced to fight in closer ranges. Cities are where political power, industry, and other hubs stem from as well. @@gator7082

Should you train CQB...Yes, it's the fastest way to teach people NOT to do it. Once they learn how quickly CQB can go wrong they begin to understand and plan around it whenever possible to limit casualties. Should you train MOUT...Yes, because every team will have to traverse a civillized area at some time. Whether thats just passing through, exfil, or digging in and fighting you need to know what your chances are. You learn that by training.

Let’s bring it back to earth with a real scenario that happened in my mountain community in the Utah mountains a couple years back. We had two armed fugitives that were being man hunted by multiple police agencies running around our little community and the surrounding mountains. While they were out, we had teams of neighbors keeping an eye on each other and the valley. I personally had to clear three cabins and homes for neighbors who had come home while the fugitives were at large. I was kitted up with plates as I one man searched, the cabins for my neighbors. The fugitives were finally found hiding in the barn of one of my neighbors after several days of being at large. It doesn’t have to be SHTF to be applicable. I was damn glad to have plates and training to clear the home as safely as possible.

Train both. CQB should be avoided at all costs but everyone should train very well for it as well. A long time of consistent fundamentals can save your life when it is not your choice. Yes to MOUT since that is where most of the action will be and how threats may operate. Then train and prepare to not have to as much as possible. I can dip a few hours out to nowhere, lay low and live easy for years if I get there. But I also train as much as possible because shit happens.

There are many reasons to learn house to clear rooms and buildings, even if you are in the mountains. If you are patrolling, there is a massive storm that pops up, you see a few buildings you want to take cover in, now you must clear them before using them to get out of the storm. Your mission is to recon a small built up area to see if there are any useable parts to fix whatever at your camp/homestead, now you must clear buildings. I do agree, you dont need to conduct offensive operations and assault a dug in enemy, but you will need to eventually enter a building sooner or later even if its because you think someone may have snuck into one of your out buildings on your property.

I think theres 2 types of cqb, one being cqb against lightly armed and/or unprepared opponents, which I think is definitely something civvies should train on. This is more like a no knock raid or similar. However, CQB against an armed force or a prepared enemy is basically suicide and should just never be done.

HOT TAKE::You can carry all the weight you want in the mountains. It isn’t hard at all. The trick is to pre-stage the equipment well ahead of time. Remember you are playing the other side on this game and you OWN the mountains. The troops in helmets and body armor are just renting it for a short while. How do you think the Taliban got DShKa and Recoiless rifles in those mountains? The humped them up there with miles weeks or months beforehand. So prestige your armor, ammo, heavy weapons and water high in the hills long before you need them. Then you can simple beat feet to your cache site and boom- you are ready to fight.

modern cqb training might be impractical in most western hemisphere communities. Honestly watching "Combat!" (old tv show with actors who were real vets, find it on youtube) would give you more real world situations than the Iraq War training mindset. They were always fighting an enemy that was equally prepared and competent, and there is already precedent of Soldiers and Marines using tactics from the show in the Vietnam War to clean up during the Tet Offensive.

It's always good to have as many tools in the toolbox as you possibly can. But in a shtf situation it's really difficult to come up with a scenario of having to have to do CQB. During that situation I'm not a police officer or a military person. I'm a survivor. Being a Survivor means trying to avoid every single situation that might kill you. CQB sucks ass even when there's an ambulance waiting for you right outside. With no emergency room or doctors available on the spot, I am not doing CQB no way!!!

I preach getting different equipment for different environments. I understand it’s expensive, but buy once cry once. Out in the wide open country and rural areas you don’t need plate carriers. There are more places for cover, and I don’t think anybody should stay in a long drawn out engagement with a professional military or law enforcement, that’s just stupid. Hit hard, run away, take the lessons of Vietnam and the Middle East. In the city, you need body armor. It’s much harder to break contact in a city than it is in the country. There are more funnels and kill zones, there are windows that enemy can just pop up at and shoot at you. It’s smart to wear armor in an urban environment and go light weight outside of the city. All I have is a plate carrier myself, but I take the plates out and switch to a boonie cover when I’m in the country. I can move better, I can take cover easier, and I can get into shooting positions that I just can’t do when I’m armored up.

Where I'm going with that is leading to the planning phase of such an operation. Risk assessment is a huge thing in planning operations. If you've got a 5 man team should you really be clearing a house without a team outside to pull cordon? Should you be putting your men's lives at risk without proper casevac? It takes a minimum of 2 mean to take away 1 casualty. Can you afford to use limited resources and put limited personnel lives on the line? What reward will securing this structure provide? It's all things to consider when thinking of "we should take this building."

@trooperjinthewoods4538 right. Honestly if things do go bad my plan is to just destroy objectives and move on. Scorched earth policy. Deny the enemy ground and supplies. Disrup their logistics. I'm not put any lives at any unnecessary risks.

I think it’s important to remember in the shtf scenario limited or no fire department. Most of our suburban or rural buildings at least in USA and Canada are vulnerable to fire . If in defensive position in house you at risk of being smoked out. So it is incredible important to try to not be in that situation if possible.

What do you think about ballistic shields for private citizens? It seems like a no-brainer for urban & CQB to have at least one shield, but I don't see a lot of emphasis on this outside of law enforcement SWAT & riot units.
@GiarcraiGO
@GiarcraiGO 7 месяцев назад
No, mostly. If you're on foot and weight is a factor, a shield would limit mobility. If you're part of a motorized group, it would be easier to move closer to an objective, but without armoured vehicles, you're still in danger approaching. It would work best if you're operating out of armoured vehicles, but that's not something most minutemen will have access to.

Being that he put people in the mountains in it know this. In remote areas they will no you are there before you you see them. And they know where you can travel and where you can't but that don't mean there aren't paths that you can't see. Why am i saying this because city people and suburbs think they're just coming out here and do what they will. They might win but at what cost.
@frost8077

I bought some cheap steel plates just in case of mobs rioting in the city. If you're around thousands of people who may have small firearms, armor seems useful. Out in the country and mountains, your body armor isn't going to protect you much from hunting rifles and shotguns anyways. As a citizen, I'm thinking it's best to keep the carrier plain so it can be worn underneath a jacket for moving from place to place. It conceals really well under a hoodie.

Really happy to see someone else talking about this stuff, cqb is almost to the point of suicide… especially urban houses. I won’t be caught dead clearing out houses and structures unless it is absolutely mission critical. Screw that. Plate carrier or not you can’t predict taking fire from a room through the wall with a closed door because someone hiding heard you walking. Cqb sucks even kicking a pebble under your shoe can echo through the house or hallway and blow any element of surprise you might have had.

I just want to add something about kit. Yes, get good plates and carriers along with a helmet. Buy as much as you can afford. But NVG and thermals if you can. BUT, the mission dictates the kit you use. And the ratio for defend attack in Urban areas is more like 7-8 to 1 rather than 3 to 1. Civilian militias aren’t going to have access to MOUT sites for training, won’t have explosives for blowing entries and won’t have the heavy support we enjoyed when we were on Active Duty. If one is fighting in an Urban Area, it’s best to defend. Avoid offensive operations in Urban areas during SHTF. Militias shouldn’t be conducting assault operations outside SHTF.

Room clearing, is very different from MOUT, at least in terms of mental thought. Doing a recon for useable parts after the collapse is way different than going house by house to take and hold a few blocks. Most groups will not be able to do this without hundreds or thousands of Minutemen. I would not recommend fighting in an urban area if at all possible. We dont have explosives today because they are illegal to possess, for the most part. In a collapse/SHTF, you are allowed what ever you can find or make. I would not rule out explosives in a SHTF scenario.

Nvg's are a double edged sword, sure you can see great under most conditions but you also run a huge risk of telegraphing exactly where you are due to the ir laser that the enemy can pick up with theirs. Modern thermals have a lot of advantages over nvg with the amount of detail they pick up, don't need ambient light or ir lasers thus aren't nearly as easily detected. They also cost less even for the best ones. You also won't get blinded if someone shines a light in your direction. Ideally both are good together using them under specific conditions like enough ambient light to not need ir for Nvg's and thermals any time including at the same time as Nvg's.
@PreparedOverlander
@PreparedOverlander 7 месяцев назад
@@JamesSmullins With anything, you must try to mitigate your risks, but you will never be able to get the risk to zero. In this case, you would only use a laser under certain situations, especially if you did your recon and found the other side didnt have NVGs. The amount of the population that does have them, is probably not very high percentage wise. For me, its a calculated risk worth taking. Thermals are great for static locations such as an LP/OP, but harder to walk through the woods while wearing them. NVGs are easier for walking, but are pretty limited in a static position.

MOUT is awesome for skill and team building. But keep it real. One guy will take one to the chest. Integrate that training. Who treats, who pulls left security, who pulls right, near, far, who calls up the 9-line, who transports him, which egress route, who humps his gear out, which team covers your exit if gear/wounded brings you down to one effective fighter in your team? Train for reality. Do you have frags? As a OC, nothing is more shocking to a team being tested as when I put two squares of red tape on two stack team members and say, “Continue, Take Action!” And their plan shatters. Then while they scurry, I have an OPFOR engage from down the hallway. Reality…..apply it.
