A player who had passed the ball gets smashed in the jaw by a shoulder. When will these clowns understand that you cannot have a professional sport where this is ok. They are so bitter and out of touch its hard to listen to. How about some concern for the player who also had their night taken away and their brain snapped backwards?
Absolutely. Queensland lost Walsh for the entire game. The whingeing of these two is incredible. What if Tedesco had copped the same tackle from a Queensland player? I rest my case.
Well you obviously never played League before if you never 'got your night taken away or your head snapped backwards' its a collision sport end of story..there was no malice or bad intent in that tackle...Walsh has a bad habit of lowering his level & falling into tackles..If you want no tackles like that your in the wrong game...Suuali bent his back aimed for his chest & Walsh fell into the tackle it was completely unavoidable..I dont condone outright intent to smash someone in the head but if you can show anyone how you tackle aggressively in a State of Origin match,bend your back,pick your target & the guy with the ball falls or drops his head down to that level & you can avoid it best you apply for a defensive coach role...So no one is'bitter & out of touch' its a collision sport & if you don't like the effects of a collision then go & play Soccer

@@SilentHotdog28 Except its not a send off in NRL. Send offs are for deliberate and malicious actions. This tackle was not intended to make head high contact with Walsh. It was an unfortunate accident - if Walsh didnt slip over, Suaalii makes contact with the chest. Therefore its a sin bin penalty.
In game 1 last year around the 70th minute Flegler got sent for 10mins Sin Bin with NSW in front on the Score Board. But instead of calling it game over or giving up the QLD Spirit found a way to get the WIN. Brandy you cant be serious, you cant be serious. How could you stop a game in the 7th minute. Nobody wanted to watch an origin for 72 minutes with a man down. But it happened. These players are paid alot of money to play a game WE WANT TO WATCH. I don't care if it was an accident. Brandy you are out of touch, it was a shoulder charge based on the rule book. He led with the right shoulder, which was the point of contact and he didn't wrap with the right arm. It was an attempted big hit gone wrong. Ruined the game for all.
Definitely not a shoulder charge any 1 knows every front on tackle you lead with your shoulder or you get bumped. It was a big hit gone wrong yes Walsh slipped but the tackler has to get it right whatever the circumstance. Was it a send off is the question. I think it was in today's game but 20 year ago it's 50/50 whether the ref even pulls that up in origin. Up the toads 😂

Yep absolutely should have been a send off. NSW supporters who disagree should reflect on what they'd expect had it been reversed and a hit on a NSW player. And the suggestion that State of Origin should be treated differently to an NRL game is Laughable- the rules are the rules, period.
Brandy is tripping. From the point Reece passes the ball, to the the contact, his head drops 2-5 inches maximum, not 12. There is direct shoulder contact to the head with the arm down by the side of his body which is literally a shoulder charge. And the worst part is his feet leave the ground as he dives his shoulder through Reece's head. Maybe there wasn't malicious intent. It sucks that it's a send off, but players can't think they can do shit like that and just get away with it.

In spite of the fact that Walsh DID drop his head and that had ne NOT there would hve been NO head contact..BUT he did NOT have to follow through with the shoulder. It was NOT an issue, it wasn't about any one saying her could have pulled out, he could not, BUT he did NOT have to lead with his shoulder, so it WAS with intent.
I agree with Big Mal. Send him off, but the other Team gets to activate 18th Man after 10 minutes. I'm a QLDer, but 12 on 13 ruined the Game, the Jewel in our Calendar.
Unfortunately that is not gonna work. Teams would just put a bum in the run team to knock out the best player on the other Team knowing that he is gonna be sent off and activate their 18th man who would probably be a gun player. Coachs will always find ways to get around rules.
I think he, Suali deserved to be sent off because the ball was already passed away and Welsh was tackled without it. Suali just meant to put Welsh off the paddock as Welsh is an outstanding player of thb both packs on the day. The ref has made the right decision according the world League rules.
I am a Blues supporter through and through. And, I am gutted. But Sua'ali'i, led with the shoulder and connected with Walsh square on the chin. He is lucky Walsh didn't have a more serious injury. The NRL and similar contact sports are coming down hard on such offences and rightfully protective of players. It was right to send him off every day of the week. It was tough on his NSW team-mates, but they had key players missing crucial tackles as well. Regardless of the 12 v 13 player situation. They could not shut down QLD period. Unfortunately they lacked the S.O.O team management and leadership skills needed to respond to a tough game for the 60 minutes where Queensland simply dominated.

Shoulder charges were banned in both rugby codes 12 years ago for the very reason that it only needs the attacking player to move slightly and things can go badly wrong. If someone is passing the ball he is not going to be a stationary target, so it ridiculous to claim that "he moved" is a defence. I'm a NSW and Penrith fan but Brandy is just making himself out to be an idiot with these comments. Sua'lii's hit was one of the worst I've seen, and I've been watching since the 1960s. He's a lucky boy that Walsh didn't break his neck given the force of the collision.

Take the fandom out. If Qld did that to Teddy, I sure would hope it was a send-off. Not many high shots are worthy of a send-off, but this was definitely one. It was totally accidendental, but Sualii had the choice of a regular tackle or a statement one. Unfortunately, he went for the statement shot, and so he should. But he got it wrong, players who want to make an impact with hits have to take responsibility not to get it wrong or let their team mate down. We have past players coming out with brain damage stories, and we should not be selfish as fans, but make sure these men have a healthy life after football.
There needs to be 2 categories of send offs. Deliberate malice is a normal send off. But an accidental hit to the head should allow for the player sent off to be replaced after 10 minutes. The speed of the game is causing all these accidental send offs, and we need to deal with them differently, otherwise games get ruined in an instant.

Yes coaches at club level could abuse the rule, like you say, but no Origin player (or their club coach) would accept a long suspension for being a hit man. Also making the penalty 20 mins will remove the temptation. We simply can’t have an Origin match ruined after 7 minutes from a largely unavoidable accident which will happen again for sure.

It was a send off, but that rule unfortunately guarantees the result. 7 minutes in to an 80 minute game you are basically saying "You came in carelessly, made reckless contact with the head, the punishment for that is your team loses". I'd prefer something like Sua get's sent and the team is down to 12 men for 20 minutes, then they're allowed to bring in another 13th man. So they're still at a massive disadvantage for the indiscretion but it at least doesn't absolutely guarantee a "game over" situation 7 minutes in.
Lol - "Reece Walsh dropped 12 inches". Kalyn Ponga was inches away from being medically retired due to head knocks recently. How many more hits to the head and failed head assessments can someone like Reece be expected to take, before people start talking that way about him? Player's careers are at risk here, and people are upset that 'it ruined the game'? WTF. That has to be a send off every time if we are going to take this seriously. Too many more hits like that can put a player's entire career into question. Origin or not, the brain doesn't know the difference. That 'slip' is nothing. Watch the footage again. His head does not get closer to the ground from the moment he plants his right foot to the moment he gets hit in the head. He was going to get knocked out regardless.
Yes of course it is refereed differently at Origin, but there is a massive difference between technical rules infringements to keep the game flowing and dangerous play. Fact is Sualii took his eyes off of Reece before point of impact so it is by definition careless. Intent plays no part. The point of the rule changes in recent years has been to protect player welfare, not prevent penalty on a player that took an action that risked serious injury to his opponent. Sualii knew the responsibility was on him not to contact Reeces head.
This is what I've been saying. It's fine to bend the technical ruck rules to make the game flow much better, but you can't be bending rules in place to protect players heads. If it's for safety then it's for safety, end of story.
There cannot be 2 sets of rules for the same game. Simple. Otherwise people like me who hardly watch nrl because of referees wouldn't even watch origin. We want to see one set of rules as an umbrella, even when it comes to international arena. Do not blame referees for f88k sakes, blame the nrl rules.
Remember when Julie Anthony (now 74) would absolutely belt out our National Anthem at the SFS with both sides of the crowd joining her. What a spine tingling start for NSW at Accor that could have been. As hosts, it started on a downer. And I love to see the old men have their time as respected elders. Julie also sang the anthem for the Sydney Olympics - perhaps Greg could get Erin Mortimer to have some lessons and on field practice with Julie, and when she's creamed it - do it. There needs to be punishment without “ruining” the game . This is my thought . The player gets sent off he’s gone from the game. After 10minutes one of the bench can then come on to the field . The team is still punished by being a man down , the other team still gets some compensation for the illegal play
Hynes kicks were kicks from someone who was scared of the moment and scared of making mistakes with that number 7 on his back. I really wanted to see him play well but atm and still proves he’s not a big game player yet. I’m hoping Moses is fit and can come in

He's got the basics but he doesn't have the experience in big games. He hasn't even won a finals game with Cronulla,. Give him a few more years to learn about executing under pressure, and he'll be worth another shot.
If NSW won or went down by 2 points it would've been impressive and cause for hope....they lost by 28 and only scored through two kicks they were pretty much a rabble.

Here is the solution - introduce a 2nd sin-bin option - long 30-40 minutes sin-bin. So 10 minutes, 40 minutes and send-off. Send-off is only for 100% intentional dangerous infringements.

If you are going in like suali did you have to get it right. Suali's right arm was by his side, and he led with the shoulder. If he gets it right it was still a shoulder charge, and would be a penalty. But he got it wrong. Could have been career ending for Walsh.
What’s funny is that I thought the same thing , I watched and watched the replay over again , it does seem like his shoulder didn’t make contact with his face . But again it happen so quick : be surprised if they really look at it and then find out oh he didn’t hit his head . Im surprised it was spoken about .
That was the first time I didn’t see Walsh cry after getting tackled flopping and pleading for a penalty, I guess it was cause he was too busy having a nap
Walsh’s head height from ground never changed trajectory through his momentum from touching the ball to releasing it (passing) when compared to Suaalii pre meditated shoulder charge to the head with intent to knock Walsh out of the game. The Ref enticed this behaviour of play when ignoring the first return kick NSW did where Walsh was tackled aggressively whilst still high in the air catching the ball. If the whistle blew then, it may have prevented the brain fart in the young and immature suaalii (union bound). Just imagine if this was Cleary instead! All I’m hearing is sour grapes as NSW miscalculated dramatically yet again. I can see why Cleary wanting to be injured and Edward’s pulled out. They only care about club land achieving 4 strait premierships. Pathetic! No wonder Kangaroos lost to NZ last year!
For me, it's player safety, keeping it competitive, that means value for paying viewers. I feel set a rule for origin similar to union, sent off no further participation with 15-20 down a player, and allow a replacement come on and the team is not allowed to activate their 18th man in this instance. However, the 18th can be activated if there's an HIA. Agree with Mel it is not competitive at this level with 13 vs 12.
if he leads with the shoulder and knocks a bloke out when he switches to union he will be rubbed out in that code as well. the main issue i have with the arguments about this is noone seems to give a crap about reece walsh who is now in concussion protocols and had to miss the rest of game 1 as well... potentially long term effects as well. also if you come out before a game and state you are going to target a bloke and then carry it out that is 100% premeditated and should be a send off.

Yes, he deserved to be sent off. He hit him directly in the head with his shoulder with FORCE. It doesn’t matter about mitigation. The problem was how hard Walsh was hit. Suaalii flew in and tried to put on a big shot on. He got it wrong. That’s the risk he took.
Yes, he did. It wasn't deliberate, but his shoulder hit his head. I follow NSW, but was more disappointed with suaalii decision to try that hit. I can remember Wayne Bennett talking about those tackles years ago saying they are a small return for a big risk. He fucked any chance NSW had of winning in that decision
I try to measure the time between the ball passed and the tackle.The fact its look late. You need time measurement one second a reference for the future .
Origin games can only be officiated differently if only NRL decides to invite another ref from another country non NSW and non Queensland to ref the origin games to avoid complains and impartiality throughout the games from origin 1 including 2 and 3. Mareta.
In Clubland players get charged for using their shoulder to tackle. That is exactly what Sualii did running and using his shoulder to tackle. The coach would have said to target Reece period.
