I'm now 47. When I skate, I try and wear a helmet all the time, except for flat ground. When the obstacles are more than a manipad, I wear the helmet. I will be retired at 55 and I want to be alive with a good brain when I retire, so a helmet is to help me achieve that. Can you imagine hitting your head very hard and then spend the rest of your life disabled in some way, just because you didn't wear a helmet?

I used to get the worst injuries when I was skating small stuff. I once fell doing a 50 50 on a waxed curb, my body hit the street, my arm fell on the curb in a weird way. I hyper extended my elbow pretty badly. It still hurts 25 years later.

I have had three head injuries from skateboarding. One of them happened when I was wearing a helmet. I was wearing the strap super low, dangling off my chin, just like I saw all the pros do in all the magazines. The other two times I wasn't wearing a helmet. These injuries occurred back around 2000-2002 and, while they were not traumatic, in the sense of being knocked out or having to be hospitalized, they have definitely made a negative impact on my life cognitively. I realize that Skate culture looks sexier without helmets, especially in videos and magazines (if they still exist), but skateboarding is a young persons' activity and, without sounding too naggy, please be conscious about how the injuries you will inevitably get will affect the rest of your life.

They can make a crappy sewer map for the TMNT movie, but they can't hire an animator long enough to fix the basic animation of jumping on your board? obviously everyone should be able to decide for themselves whether or not to wear a helmet, but fact is there is a huge stigma and insentive to not wear one. just ask andy anderson about that. so currently it is not really a free decision, because the scales are tipped much into not wearing one and it takes some balls to still do it. and it's not a style choice or something, people slam on their heads not very often, but when they do, it is literally life threatening. sometimes you can see it in skateboarding content and the stupidity screams to the heavens. they are rather risking to lose the ability to skate forever, among other things than to risk feeling ashamed of wearing a helmet. there is no argument that makes any sense and speaks against helmets. I never wore one for years, fell to my head once and then began to wear one and I never felt a difference while skating. I did however feel a difference in the attitude of others towards me. and much of it was also projection, I was scared that people would see and treat me differently when I wore a helmet. ultimately everyone just takes it and I am doing my thing. do your thing, I won't ask you to wear one, but realize it's not your free decision to wear one, not wearing a helmet is something that was given to you with the culture and you take it as normal without really asking. driving the car we wear our seatbelts and don't question it, because thats how we grew up, its normal and we know it saves lifes. but there used to be a time where it was just everyones decision and when it became mandatory people were screaming "this is an assualt on my freedom" and stupid shit like that, but in the end it doesnt bother anyone anymore and literally saves so many lifes its not even funny. perhaps its time to stop being babies and embrace a healthier way of thinking. why only have kids under 18 wear helmets? adult heads are just as vurnerable. it's just trying to justify something you think is normal, but is in fact stupid. like smoking. I won't ask you to quit, but I will also not say it's just ok to do. mostly I will say nothing but if we have this conversation, we gotta be honest with ourselves.

Nope requiring helmets is worse than mocking helmets. Helmets should be kept as a personal choice. Street skating has incredibly low risk of head injuries. I believe the over emphasis on helmets. Like with the Gordon Ramsay thing. Yeah a helmet can save you but in the us 0.095% of people will be in any type of reported accident, is why there is so much helmet hate. If you ride park yes you should wear a helmet there is serious risk of head injury but making it mandatory is still ridiculous. Shouldn't hate or force helmets

Whenever I'm learning a new trick I do, but I totally get why pros don't. Like it's pretty easy to not land on your head if you're experienced enough. Downhill longboarding wearing helmets is culture, typically also slide-gloves, and depending on speed padded jackets/trousers or full leather suits. I ATGATT on hills. As you get older one's bones become more brittle too, so most skaters i know 50+ also wear a helmet, for any skate discipline (street, LDP, freeride, etc). Parks, dance and freestyle seem uncommon, but then people are typically going slow speeds, without cars etc nearby.

I started wearing one after spending some time working in a lab studying brain injuries. Seeing stories of patients who became physically disabled, experience chronic pain, or lost the ability to regulate their emotions from one bad hit to the head, hardly seems worth it not to wear one.

I'm a firm believer of, If you're doing ANYTHING extreme, you've gotta protect yourself as necessary. If you play on sending yourself doing a staircase at running speed or higher, and there's a chance you aren't gonna land on your feet, that's your sign that you need to protect your dome. Tony Hawk wears a helmet, and he's a professional. Dudes playing full contact football on tv? They wear helmets too. Take it waaaaaay back to the ages of swords and dynasties..... Those guys wore helmets, or as they'd say, “don a helm of protection“. And hey, if you're just starting to learn, just rolling on a board is already pretty extreme and you've got a chance of wiping right out. So you can wear a helmet a keep from hurting yourself before you've learned even the basics. But there will always be something you'll do while riding that'll require some discretion about wearing a helmet

Back when I was in my teens and early 20s I never wore a helmet when I skateboarded. It just never crossed our minds to wear them. There wasn’t till we started seeing Tony Hawk wearing his helmet a lot more that we started to see other kids wearing them. It’s always a better practice to be safe and I would never tell someone not to be.
@justinmusicandskateboardin9282

For the millionth time, helmets do NOT necessarily equal more safety. Yes it protects your SKULL, which is admittedly pretty important, but that is one of the LEAST LIKELY AREAS for you to ever potentially fall onto when street skating. You are MUCH more likely to injure your ankle or wrist or knee or hip. So if wearing a helmet AT ALL impacts your ability to skate optimally then it is much more likely you're actually INCREASING your chances of injury by putting on a helmet (if you're someone that doesn't always wear one)

Skateboarding is often the speed of walking, jogging, rarely running and human foot powered. After helmets are mandatory for walking THEN they can be mandatory for skating. There are studies that helmets are not effective at cycling speeds and have a net negative effect. The LAST thing we need is less people getting outside, less people getting fitter, and less people using carbon neutral transport.

@@dustinhawley1896 Definitely is not a term you ban use without proof. It is like pads in motorcycle gear basically being useless because any accident even in 1st gear is beyond the tolerance of the (standard) pads and can stop clean breaks. With bicycles alone helmets might not be good: More research is needed and preferably research that looks to specific questions and claims we currently base our lives around and enforce on others and ourselves. If you legitimately go through a lot of this it does seem evident that it is ineffective at best, or possibly a contributing factor to rotational related injuries at worst. Further gathering that rotational related injuries are often more severe or fatal than several other common injury types that helmets are effective at protecting. Definitely MORE peer reviewed and specific work needs be done especially if helmets are contributing to less activity and thus common health issues in buckets for tiny gains in a limited and uncommon injury type. Funny thing is as a skateboarder apart from VERY new skaters doing things they lack the reaction time and fall-sense to handle (basically bombing things before they have balance or even leg strength) I have seen A LOT of falls and none I have ever seen end in head trauma wrists are the place to reinforce. I always found that surprising (and TOTALLY anecdotal). Skateboarders have always been exempted worldwide from the helmet thing seeing skateboards basically go at walking to sprinting speed so it would be like mandating helmet use for pedestrians just because the odd numnuts sprints down hills with trip hazzards and falls, parkours over gaps, and tries to run downstairs while doing twirls. Check the references it is fascinating how misplaced unfulfilled maternal instinct has warped adults' one day to day hobbies to be a hassle or constrictive and encouraged obesity. (some people struggle to get out of bed and get outside never mind get protective gear and plan ahead for storage and stowage) www.cyclehelmets.org/1012.html?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0OkKV-27-YyBHVUMxUZTWaR7tBihPeNbdcqLjZBmzDtuS5w2FexQ1bXsA_aem_ZmFrZWR1bW15MTZieXRlcw#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20direct%20evidence,reduce%20injuries%20to%20the%20head
