Should Stock Nerf Wars Still Exist?

With how much the nerf hobby has grown, with the modding community continuing to create blasters that perform better and better, does it make sense for stock nerf wars to still exist and be held?

I ran "Below 100fps" games at my local library for the kids and we had a Blast! I'd have 2 Squad members as Team Captains to help keep the games going, as well as some Free Shoot time. We would end with a contest to see who could collect the most darts & win a prize from the Library.

My thoughts: Every club or event should put a stock class battle in their games. It makes it more interesting being shot at by a stock maverick than a singled titan. Plus, if kids wanted to play, they would feel more safe. But a mix of modded and stock could create issues. When I went to wars back in 2018, I went to a pay-to-play arena where it was stock and modded. It was a little unfair because rival dominated the field because it was designed around it. I would hear when I left "mommy, can I get one that shoots the yellow balls?" It was kind of sad hearing that they weren't having a great time because of their blaster. Nerf to me is a place we're nerds have fun with children's toys because they can. Nice video jang!

I LOVE stock games! The blasters performing poorly is part of the charm. Running circles around someone and both of you are just missing missing missing is hilarious and so much fun. It also gives you the opportunity to pull out blasters you normally wouldn't use.

I have and use modded blasters and play in high fps events. But the truth is 90% of the events I've played at and most of my favorite ones are technically stock events. Especially as my two boys get to take part as well (though the oldest is now old enough for modded events). The truth is that its more about the games than the blasters. A good, well run event with an experienced game organiser can be fun even with hopeless blasters - sometimes more so. Stock is where new players come in - its the lifeblood of the hobby and higher powered stuff should build off it, not shun it.

Where I live (Finland), stock wars is what we go by, simply because of a very small market. NERF-wars aren't that common, in fact I'm one of the driving forces to get some form of NERF-wars with a bit more competitive feel to them. So far, because of the current situation in the world, I've managed to have one war and it was all stock blasters. Still extremely fun but one can always improve, right? I've been talking to some of the toy stores here and while they do appreciate what I'm trying to do, they don't really see any market for blasters that goes above 70-90 fps, seeing as most foamflinging blasters are marketed for kids. And no, Rival isn't really a thing in toy stores here, sad but true. And most adults don't see the fun in it, since there's a bigger community for airsoft and paintball here. I am trying to expand my own blaster collection and with that influence others to do the same but it's a slow process, again with the world being in the state that it is right now.

Absolutely yes. We had this discussion on Britnerf a while ago and we worked out that games that run at 100fps or less are by far the most highly attended games in the UK and they are definitely gateway into the hobby. If we want our hobby to grow and the player base to grow we need to support these games. Seasoned hobby players will always have the higher FPS games to use all our toys we've spent time and money on but we need to keep the new players coming in and as you say some of the stock games are the most fun 😄

Here in the UK, many Universities have "Assassin Societies" that incorporate blasters into their games, but few would refer to themselves as "Nerf Societies". It was from there I searched further and discovered Britnerf and the wider Nerf community, and presented the idea of modding to my society to increase the range of gameplay available. But I found that even the most dedicated players didn't tend to end up down the modding route - the game itself is what matters, something fun to do alongside their main time sink; actually getting a degree! The stories of hunting down your target or spectacular "kill" methods were what people remembered, not the kit itself used. - HailFireYork

I think the conversation should move away from stock vs not stock. Fps capped games , that’s the best way to organize games for everyone. Because as you pointed out, aeon pro is stock. It still hits hard enough to make a little kid cry. Rounds with 100 fps soft cap would get the same goal accomplished much more efficiently and allow for modded blasters with low performance to get kids interested into modding. Just my opinions though.

I would love to play more weird gane types with limited options for fun every so often, but the group I'm in is mostly adults with huge amounts of 3d printed/high perfirmance blasters, so we mostly do competetive or larger scale outdoor games.

In the VFBA, we start games at 5:30 and end at 10 PM, but we don't start superstock/modded games until 7- That's because we start off with stock-class games, so parents can bring their gremlins over to play. It also boosts the number of attendees by several times, since not everyone wants to play a superstock-class game or has the gear to participate. Running both gives people options, and there are a couple people who run mods just for stock (such as myself) that are still modified blasters, but they do still shoot stock ammo at stock (70FPS or lower) velocities. If you have a very low FPS limit, it's very interesting to see what modifications people will do if you're pretty much only allowed to minimize and stuff.

I live in a country where nerf is a very minor hobby, no competitive blaster war exists. No high performance stock blaster like jet blaster, dart zone pro etc available here. The market is filled with grey trigger nerf blasters and fake nerf blasters (not other brand, but literally fake rip off claiming to be nerf brand, using nerf packaging, but not the original hasbro nerf) Even having a stock nerf war is not that easy. Most of the time when we can have a stock nerf war is due to a nerfer gathering non nerfers and lend them blasters just so we can have a small war. Nevertheless we still love this hobby though

I see much mention of 100 fps caps as opposed to "stock". Considering that Dart Zone has been puting out one new blaster after another that are running 95 to 105 fps out of the box a 100 fps limit is more practical than making It "stock only". The player with a stock Spectrum and DZ waffles is going to wreck an opponent with a stock Stryfe and Elites. Allowing the Stryfe a rewire/re-motor and use Bulldogs or Insutantos in the stock cage would even things up to about 100 fps.

1000% they should be. They are the quick match of nerf. They are where people who just want a bit of craic and to run stupid meme or gimmick loadouts go. The low power/stock games are what makes nerf different from the likes of airsoft or paintball where everyone is looking for the new competitive edge. If nerf ever goes the same direction those later two go where I'm having to dump 1-2k into a joule creeped, 30+rps, rhopped/maple leafed, 500fps, high cap pellet hose just to play a normal weekend walk on event I'm out.

Yes of course. Unless your using a dedicated indoor venue for things like airsoft or paintball, a lot of them don't want things getting damaged. In the UK we have games in verious place and the max limit is 130fps many have 100fps/stock limits. All have a good mix of stock to lightly modded to modded to the limit. With out these games with the lower or stock limit we wouldn't be able to play in some of the awesome venues we have here in the uk.... Also have high fps limits is always a good way to play. Nerf is ment to be fun and you can defo have more fun and be much sillyer at lower limits than higher ones in my opinion.

Stock Nerf games are the entryway drug into the hobby. If you want your hobby to continue growing and evolving, then you must foster environments that encourage people to get interested and nurture their curiosities into something more. Stock as in absolutely no modifications I personally wouldn't be interested in as it limits a lot of blasters and creativity. Stock as in low fps (100fps or below) absolutely it gives a way for new players to get in but also is an interesting space for modders as you can build certain designs that are less viable at high fps and for the more budget conscious modder these low fps spaces generally require lower costs to tweak blasters or experiment in.

I used to be a big proponent of stock only events, however with the widespread availability of chronographs in the hobby now, I don't see a reason to run stock only events instead of low-cap events. (sub 100 is a good number). If the point is for new players to be able to pick up a blaster at walmart (say a kronos, villainator, or spectrum, for some good entry options that outperform elite 2.0) You can do that and still allow things like a nailbiter with printed swappable clips, a 6 dart hammershot, or a swarmfire on a stock spring but rewired for rechargeable batteries. The blasters don't hit any harder than stock, but they let new players get a look at things they could do, and show people that modding blasters isn't always about making them hit super hard (A lot of times I hear "I don't want to hurt anybody so I don't mod my blasters.") A stryfe modded to hit 90 fps isn't doing anything different than a spectrum, but it has cool cosmetic kits (go with clear or orange, kids). Maybe someone wants to run a pump-action retaliator with stock internals, or a longshot with nothing upgraded except a 5KG spring. Also, if mods are allowed under a low cap, it prevents clubs from figuring out what exactly is a mod. Is pulling out that stupid rubber dart gate on a stryfe a mod? Is attaching a tri-strike barrel to a recon to shoot megas a mod (I've had a club rule that it is, because it changes the functionality of a blaster). Is adding grip tape to the top of a retaliator slide a mod? Should rival be banned? Should non-nerf be banned? Is a dart zone pro mk2 stock even though it hits hard? You can ignore all this headache if you just say 100 fps cap and let potential players know that most stock blasters on the shelves shoot between 70-100.

I personally love the way that Southern Maryland House of Nerf does it. They start their events with stock wars and play several gametypes with stock blasters before switching over to the 150fps modified cap. I don't know how well that system would work with higher fps clubs. The Maryland Nerf Herders is a 12 and up group to begin with and has a 200fps cap. You absolutely need stock wars/games. One of the great thing about the Nerf hobby is the openness and inclusiveness of it. You need to be able to get start with the £10 blaster you got from ToysRUs. If you need to invest £200 you are not going to get new kids involved. I know the aeon is $25 but most of us can't get them. It's also not fun for kids to get shot with a High FPS blaster so they won't play and won't ever get hooked. Yes as adults we often want 'more power' but theres a lot of fun to be had in low power... I was running a weekend of outdoor games for groups of kids and one set it was raining sooooo hard we had to move inside. It was a small space so we played jolts only. They had an absolute blast. It you reiae the entry bar you become an exclusive club and I don't believe thats what Nerfers want.

I agree with the whole people think stock blasters are useless and I think it's really easy to get into that mindset especially if you've just built your new cool 150fps blaster. but stock blasters are still plenty useful I've used a stock barrel break at 180fps games and still done alright with it sure you have to try but it works. And that's 30-50fps with 2 shots until a long reload with something like a retaliator would be easy compared to that. That said personally I don't like stock only wars but I'm totally fine with say 100-130fps cap just because that means you can make modifications like maybe have a rapidstrike that doesn't shoot far but shoots really fast or something like that. It means kids can still play just fine but someone who likes to use modified blaster can still fit in.
