In this episode of Black Out with Ian & Rashad, the hosts delve into the complex and often fraught relationship that Black individuals and communities have with their neighborhoods. They discuss the notion of "buying back the block," the pressure to give back to the community, and the risks involved in returning to one's roots.
Ian and Rashad explore the dichotomy of opinions surrounding leaving and returning to the neighborhood. They dissect the societal expectations placed on successful individuals to reinvest in their communities, while also examining the potential dangers and challenges that may arise from doing so. The hosts draw on real-life examples, including the tragic killing of Nipsey Hussle and the experiences of other public figures like Cam Newton, to highlight the contentious nature of these expectations.
The episode offers a thought-provoking conversation about the allure and glorification of 'hood culture,' as well as the pressures placed on Black celebrities and successful individuals to uplift and revolutionize their neighborhoods. They also delve into the responsibility of politicians and community leaders in effecting lasting change within these areas.
Listeners are taken on a journey through the psychological and emotional aspects of this dynamic, with the hosts addressing the deeply embedded cultural attachment to the "ghetto" and the expectations placed on Black individuals to be saviors of their communities.
Ian and Rashad emphasize the need for a purpose-driven approach to giving back to the community, discussing the significance of providing opportunities, sharing knowledge, and empowering individuals from within the neighborhood. They challenge the notion that simply "kicking it" in the old neighborhood is productive, instead advocating for strategic and purposeful engagement.
Ultimately, this episode sparks critical conversations about the obligation, or lack thereof, for successful individuals to reinvest in their communities. The hosts explore the nuanced balance between showing allegiance to one's roots and the necessity of personal progress and advancement.

First step stop claiming being hood or ghetto. It’s not a flex. A man can still be strong, masculine, and a protector without claiming to be street, hood, and ghetto.

The issue with the "buy back the hood" conversation is that it never goes far enough. Sending a check to the local school, handing out turkeys, or even opening a business just ISN'T enough. It requires a full, top-down, integration of every single development aspect needed to spur advancement. It can't just be "Open a business-hire locals- spend money-repeat" or "Dropping off turkeys on Thanksgiving". After you open that business and hire workers, are you developing them to expand your enterprise? Are you spending the money on products and services you would like see in the community? Are you just giving some to money to open a bakery (for example), or are you helping them to secure proper permits, registrations, legal assistance, etc? Are you voting to ensure the tax dollars you are generated are going to the things that require immediate attention? Are your kids going to schools? Are you spending money on schools PASSED what is given by the local government? It's all connected and it's wild that how relatively "small" the imagine of buying back the block is to so many people. It requires more effort and more money than any One rapper or politician hope to assess. Folks talking about handing out sneakers when the school board has a $3 million dollar shortfall, and they never read the budget or cared to vote against the guy who wanted to use the money to fund new tasers for the police.

Cut the check for the hood then bounce. It's too risky to be on the front lines or boots on the ground if you are a celebrity, famous, or a public figure. Too many of our people are being killed or attacked by our own people. Move in silence or with caution.

Here's my take: We find other Brothers and Sisters that we can work with and move out of the major cities. We need to rebuild in other places because the soil is spoiled where we at. Many years of institutionalized racism, normalized dysfunction, and self-hate is the trend in the ghetto and it wasnt designed for us to succeed their. We need to get out of these places, take Black folks who want to rebuild with us and start over somewhere thats not entirely fucked up. Unfortunately some of our Brothers and Sisters in the hood are infected with a sociological disease that's been plagued upon us sense slavery. We can't save all these people, by we can become the example by rebuilding, then maintaining, and then passing the formula down to our children and their children's children. Now more than ever we have all the tools needed to thrive and become the great people that we know we are. And then one day, when we've built a stronger and more united community, we can return to the hood and guide our people in the right direction. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Make a distinction between giving back and investing in. They are not the same. You may have to get away and it's smart to do so. Investing in the hood should be a part of the success not just something one does once they've "arrived". You don't have to be there to invest there. People, myself included, are constantly looking elsewhere. It's always when questions like this are posed that the simple reality hits and seems so profound. Then I start kicking myself for being so far behind. Your hood is somebody else's elsewhere. No one has to know you're behind that deal 2 blocks over from your childhood home.

It's the children that we need to focus on the nutrition the food that they're eating either at home or at school so that they can advance and compete on a real level. so we won't continue to have these conversations about having to have conflict with the youth in the hoods

Yes, because most of them came from the hood, and just because you are successful, you shouldn’t look down on anyone, but there is a danger going back because some black just have a criminal element in their DNA no matter what! So, you should help but be very cautious and careful! Because some people are ignorant and jealous, so some people do not have respect for your success. I’m a Senior Citizen and I’m not doing so well in health or finance, but I have old fashioned morals, I prefer having a good character and a decent person, and nobody owes me anything, just because I’m not doing so good doesn’t mean I’m supposed to be jealous, or expect someone to give me something, I came from a Generation where we worked for whatever we got or had. We went to Church on Sundays. We were indoors when the street lights came on, we didn’t fight with guns, we didn’t listen to nasty vulgar rap music, same sex marriage was unheard of and was not even discussed!

Nipsey Hustle is the perfect example of the crux of the problem. How can the Asian market, Arab gas station, White-owned project, Indian liquor store exist, practically untouched, for decades? Yet, Black run businesses barely survive a few years. There's something very insidious about that construct, and investment should be made into the programs and foot soldiers that stay around to combat that. There was a sharp decrease in the number of young men walking around my town with their pants sagging once the Black barbers got together and addressed that with their clients. Anybody keeping drama brewing in the neighborhood needs to be checked. And we need to stop referring to it as the 'hood' and celebrate its wins, not just glorify its horrific losses. No one is coming to save us, but us!

Yes, there are cultures that are more empathetic to their hoods' and are setup to take care of those in it, Look at the Hasidic community. That's part of their culture that's designed by their religious devotion, community responsibility and cultural dicatatesEvery nationality here in the US does that in different ways. The unique thing about the Black community is that many have been subjected to some of the worst areas in a borough or city. When folks do make it out, they are genuinely not trying to visit those memories sometimes, especially if they are traumatic. Others, will always visit and reminisce. But for the most part, life is too short to try and help those still there. If you can, so be it, but that's alot to ask or even expect someone to do. The Hood is a construct that society created, it was not something that Black people created, we just make the best of our situation. And that's the key, when you make the best of it, you can benefit or not. It's your perspective and goals in life. Eveyone has friends they grew up with, but many of those same friends are no longer a part of our circles for various reasons.

I think we should, but from a distance. We have to keep in mind Nipsey and Cam. However, with it, we have to take into consideration who we are moving around. So, use allies through the legal system, businesses, and law enforcement as well, but do it secretively for their good. If you let them know what you're doing, they may pull a Jam Master Jay move on you.

A lot of folks do not understand how to get back. One of the problems were giving back is knowing how to get back. The other thing is Cam Newton getting jumped by some teenagers, to say that wouldn't happen to them white football players you guys probably all right, when you grow up completely different with their respect in your schools with the respect from your peers respect in your household and you are not fighting over scraps where you're forced to be disrespectful because you want to talk better then those things are going to happen in the black community. If you look at the videos online most of the black content from the young and the older folks at least in America the people are angry that bothered they are upset that frustrated they pissed off they had enough and they not taking it no more in the first one to get it will be someone that looks like them It will come from your own because those people are closest to you in proximity. Now if can Newton would have went to a small country town where black folks were at They would have been rejoicing to see him because they grow up different. The other thing is yes you should get back to where you came from You have to be careful and strategic the way that you get back. Just because you turn into a celebrity don't mean you have to come back make an announcement and have a big old scene or cameras and things saying hey I'm showing my support from where I grew up at. You don't have to do it that way be strategic go where things are organized at. Like pick a high school pick three high schools pick a junior high school pick a elementary school be smart going to a football field some of these folks are fresh off the street some of them live on the street a lot of them all they know is straight. At least you'll be in a controlled setting if you do it out of school or someone else's organization. You don't even have to organize You can pop up. Too many celebs are trying to be someone they are not. Be smart be thoughtful be considerate and understand the situation that you're putting yourself in bottom line.

Man this a tough convo frfr. As someone who's actively involved in ministries and many other programs like mentoring and volunteer coaching, our people have a DEEP infatuation hood culture, flexing on one another, and overall negativity. Keeping it 💯 sometimes i just dont see it ever changing bc its like entrenched to the core. Ive been in prisons and black kids have no hope and 99% of them are proud to serve time. We even had some who would get out of jail and come to the church, get involved, get jobs but go back to those friends and end up back in jail. Its a nasty cycle. We always worried about the wrong things. There's pressure to wear the nicest clothes, drive the nicest cars, have and flaunt guns, and be "self made". American Hispanics are similar but more tight knit and it pains my heart to say it but the ones who are more around their own than blacks are just generally nicer people. But theres a part of me that cant turn my back on the hood. Just been through too much. I was once just a kid in the hood with big dreams too. So I appreciate the opportunity to go back and offer advice to the kids or help them in anyway whether it be tutoring, Bible study, helping them learn instruments, coaching sports or just supporting them. All at ZERO cost. Bc it was never about the money. Genuinely want them to succeed and make a positive impact bc one day they are going to have the responsibility of making sacrifices and looking out for the next generation while learning from the good and the bad of the generation before them. The hood molded me into who i am. And im grateful for actual bad people who had good enough moments to let me know not to get involved in this life. They told me go out and do better bro. F the hood life. It aint nothing here. So i know theres good in the hood... But man is there more bad... But the thing is its going to take more than a few people. As I've stated I get involved in any way possible and its usally the same people year after year who are heading all of the programs and sacrificing time and resources to help make an impact in the hood. So I'm speaking from experience. Its the same people trying to do the samw things and barely any new people join year after year. Thats a problem. Yes it takes true sacrifice... They say it takes a village, and thats just for ONE child. We need people who are in the hood already, combined with people who left to invest in things that matter and then we need way more police PRESENCE. 12 just needs to be around to help prevent alot of violent crimes. But i stand on getting us to have a heart for God. Bc you'll see your brothers and sisters differently. You'll stop listening to the atrocity of music that we have to push out that stains your soul at a young age. What are we thinking our young black kids are doing drive bys, robberies and other crimes listening to gospel music? Are they twerking to Talib? We wonder why so many of us turn into Thugs and Thots while they listen to that kind of music EVERY SINGLE DAY. And we'll defend our "hip hop" music to the death... Let's keep it a buck. And that very same music is the core of how black men and women treat each other so poorly. And we also need to stop kicking kids out at 18 and stop teasing people who still living at home (unless playful or they deserve it or something. Some banter or holding someone accountable is ok). White people thrive on that. They fail at so much but get bailed out by their parents until they hit on something and then turn around and put the family on. Its just so much we have to change but we can still be proud of our culture. But our culture needs an injection of positivity and accountability. And our relationship with money gotta change. We put it over EVERYTHING and that becomes dangerous bc at that point your mindset is already tainted towards people and the needs of people bc any and everything is essentially 2nd place off rip. Not saying dont go make your money or not let your money work for you. Just make sure your heart is right and you have to draw lines you wont ever cross for the bag or just getting it to flex. But overall in life period you should be giving or giving back to something. I can ive seen lives change. With enough time, resources and the grace of God, it's all possible. But we gotta want it and it can't just be millionaires throwing money back at the hood. It takes a village. And God has to be involved so the motivation is LOVE above anything else

There's some fair points here but remember Nipsey Hussle wasn't innocent. We love him dearly but he got blood on his hands. He was a crypt. He was not some honorable citizen so to speak. He turned his life around and we respect him and we admire him for it. But we have to be honest about who some of these people are. He wasn't just killed randomly. He was killed because of his past most likely. And is it possible the cops have something to do with it? That's possible, but again it's more to do with his lifestyle. From being a gang member, he should not have died, but this is what happens when you're in a certain lifestyle so he wasn't simply killed because he gave back to the black community. If you guys don't want to help the ghetto the black community just say that you don't have to make excuses. There's a million in one reasons why you could just not help. But be honest, you all don't want to help your people in that close proximity. You would rather be online and pass on information and if that's what you want to do that's what you want to do but Don't act like some of the people who have given back were saints because these are oftentimes the same people who help destroy the community again. I love Nipsey but we got to keep it real
