@kasoniakisangani 3 года назад
You're sort of right, but it's the other way around, the university doesn't care about the degree, so thus the students end up not caring about the degree. The attitude flows downward. It's possible some student athletes go into college not caring about the degree, but that attitude of caring about the degree should first be exuded by the college; and they've shown they don't care about the degree from how they treat their football and basketball college athletes (for example, their sports schedules and how they can interrupt with school work).

Allow them to make money off of NIL each year. Then take a percentage of revenue and put it in a trust fund for the player that they gain access to once they graduate. If they don't graduate use that money to pay for operating costs or the next player's trust fund. This way you encourage players to get their degree while also letting players earn money for their efforts on the field. Seems like the best compromise possible imo.

The team, the school and the NCAA do not care if they graduate, in fact they push them to do things that hurt their educational pursit. D1 athletics is a full time job and school is always 2ndary. College sports can only be amateur if money is completely out of the game. Once money is introduced to amateur sports, it ceases to be amateur sports. Let's get to the real issue here. The issue here is that college sports has become a multi-billion dollar business. See thats the problem. If that wasn't the case - then we wouldn't even be having this discussion. There would be no problem. Colleges should be in the business of educating students. Period. Not being part of a multi-billion dollar business thats centered around the same students they should be educating. See theres a conflict of interest. You cant be part of a multi-billion dollar business and have amateurism at the same time. Jay is saying the all other students can go out and make money for themselves and doesn't see the difference. There is a difference. The college athletes are on tv, providing the entertainment that is central to the multi-billion dollar business that he speaks of. The tv contracts, the advertisers, etc. Regular students that go out and work at Papa Johns delivering pizza are not part of that business. Thats the difference Jay and it's the central problem at the same time. The real question, is why did we allow things to get so out of hand? I know that theres money to be made in sports but sports should be secondary and we've made it out to be the primary focus. If colleges can't survive without money generated from college sports then thats their problem. They shouldn't be dependent on that, since their focus should be on Education. Not sports. By the way Jay - they are getting paid. For instance, to live on campus at the University of Florida, includes tuition, dorms, meals and everything else is about $21,000 per year. When they graduate they have a degree and don't have $80,000+ in debt to pay back to the feds. They also have other grants and or stipends that would leave money in their pocket. Also those figures are for in-state residents. Usually that number doubles for non-residents.. so if you are a football player, playing for Florida as a non-resident your school debt would be around $160,000.

Darryl Nelson I thought you were implying in your original comment that law school was part of Jay’s athletic scholarship (I think technically it could be for someone who graduated undergrad early and decided to go to law school since athletic eligibility is 5 years, I’m not sure though). First make all them get admitted to college via the same process all students have to use and same for transfers. Then they can "apply" to play on the football team as if they get the job then they are eligible for a scholarship and all players can be paid as work study at the same rate as any student can get. Colleges are for education so make the football or basketball respectful of that.

Like I dont think anybody is expecting a fortune from this, it could even probably be less than minimum wage like maybe a deal like waiters have, its $X per hour on the field and practice and workouts plus tips. Each player would have a TIPJAR account setup for bonuses from jerseys and NCAA21 video games. If someone downloads your current starting team you get a team bonus. If they download you specifically you get more of a share from that DLC. I think this would promote all the athletes to want to be better for the team and for their selves. You could even have a 2nd and 3rd string DLC package for that team. This would help youtube content from getting too out of hand too for simulated match-up videos. That person would have to have bought your player already to make that video. But I doubt that is even an important issue because the gaming industry is a multi billion dollar industry. The amount of money coleges and players would make is way more than some kids single video on youtube that may get a few thousand views. It just gets on my nerves, I feel like even as everything is right now, there is a way to make the NCAA video games and still be fair. Its like nobody want to even touch it and i just don't get it. It can be done.

Here's the thing they want you to believe that the way it's done is just so much better because of the professional aspect of sports The reality is and this is a well known fact that college athletes are amateur sports players therefore they should be compensated And we're we're talking about people who whether they have scholarship or not will have significant debt when they get out of school whether they go on to professional sports or not they still have to find work to provide income for themselves this is a mute point when you look at the conferences in sent just the ncaa all of the conferences exploit players of all sports to make money because they know they don't have to pay them therefore they could get away with whatever they want and no one has the gusts to stop it I think we're finally on the right track for leveling the playing field taking the power from the conferences give it to the colleges as to who is going to get paid and how much treat it like the amateur sports that it is and you're going to basically have a much better environment because what happens if these players have a career ending injury and they don't have health insurance because they can't afford it because there a full time student how much money is that injury gonns cost they're gonna have a $100,000 in medical debt instantaneously that's just 1 of the issues

I thought they already solved this and 2021 was going to be when players can get royalties from their likeness name and number? I must have missed the final on that. The EA NCAA football video game news was talking about it a lot last year and how the new rule is good news for a new video game coming out soon. I'm guessing it didn't pass but yeah they need to take these stupid restrictions away from athletes. When the video game comes out, you have to know that the video game industry is a multi billion dollar industry too, this would only bring more money to the colleges and a small percentage would be going to the player's. The schools would be getting a much larger piece of the pie. And something else, the next gen of consoles are on the way, games could be $80 per copy. If money is a problem, just make the game just like other companies have been doing for years and that is Special editions and DLC, you can either buy a retail price that has a fake roster, or a special edition that is $20 more or whatever, $50 more. People will pay to have it. I've paid over$100 for a special edition before. You could even have DLC packages of individual teams and individual players to control the royalties accuratly. The game technology has changed a lot since 2014 . I really don't understand how it hasn't been done yet becausethis is a lot of potential money just setting there. You could even have the games come out a year after each season to get the player landscape figured out, and even have a credit system set up for all players where they get the money later after their college football career. There are so many ways to make it work. For the jersey sale part of it, that has to be through the college and their own stores in their own states. And online shops.

If collage players get paid all players should get paid the same amount no matter the position because they will get paid a lot more in the NFL . They all should be Equal in collage no deserves more than anyone Else. If you pay someone more than another thats pro sports. So no i would think that they would deserve mpre than each other.

Ronnie Bishop I understand and respect your answer. The reason for my rebuttal is because ALOT has changed since those days were a full-ride scholarships is all you need. But when it gets to a point with the elevation of money generating within the combination of almost all sectors (coaching staff, athletic directors, university presidents, league conferences, networks, sponsors, etc.,) can surpass billions of dollars 💵) all around you as a student athlete and you are producing the most work and cannot get a cent. That is not right. If not paying them a stipend, at least allow them to receive endorsements and earn income using their likeness.

If college athletes want to go pro, fine. Quite a few have done it. This year of the Covid pretty much proved my belief that intercollegiate sports aren't really that important, and the 'billions' of dollars aren't really there. The athletes entering college are not the attraction fans are paying for. Fans are paying for the school's brand, the school's reputation, the overall weekend college experience. Fans pay to see Taylor Swift. They don't pay to see freshmen recruits. A football players individual value is minimal. If he is injured, his value becomes a deficit. A replacement is found and the game goes on. The uniform is the uniform. The school's brand raises the value of the player wearing the uniform.

Absolutely not. The NCAA should not pay athletes. The NCAA should elevate the requirements to get into a University. Athletes should be 3.0 GPA students to be admitted, and athletes should maintain a 3.0 GPA to remain eligible to play sports. Division I and Division II athletes are notorious for low SAT scores. That should come to a stop today.

No way, won’t ever happen. They’re there to get an education first. They want to get paid? Go get a job and give up football. When they’ve graduated college and put in their time with work experience then they can run their own athletic department. Good luck paying your players though. Legislation won’t ever pass that trash no matter how much they cater to the kneelers. 🇺🇸

College is not a business, it is an educational institution. Students are there to get an education first and the activities they engage in our second. Even if that activity generates revenue for the institution. Those hired to teach or run the institution, administration, even if you coach a sport your purpose is to educate or support the operation for the purpose of educating students. Athletes are students. If you do not like the compensation do not attend, no one is forcing you either via scholarship or otherwise. Stay home or if no scholarship work your way through school. Tons of students have done it before and many will do it again in the future. Don't go and go pro if you do not like it. If coaches do not like it leave. My child went to college and part of his tuition cost was money that went towards admission to athletic events whether they wanted to attend them or not. I get the revenue generation of athletics but that goes to the institution not the players. In high school athletics generates some money there too but the students only get it through improvements in things for the school itself. New uniforms, new exercise equipment, improvements to playing surfaces, most improvements contingent on the success of the teams in competition but not paid specifically to players. So hypothetically, if you do pay college athletes, how is the money distributed? Certainly a star player will want more and more. What about kids that know they are not good enough for the next level? Will they fight for extra eligibility in college just to stick around and get paid? Look at other countries too. Some countries competition to get into college when compared to the numbers trying and the population is absurd. Many come to the United States to get an education and work. Despite sports lasting popularity at all levels including professional, the outcome of such competition while temporarily joyful and even more profitable for winners and less for losers, the ultimate benefit at the end of the day is what? Does it add to the possibility of curing cancer for example? If your team wins what does the fan get from that? It is essentially a dream world for fans of sports. It is essentially an activity with a beginning and end to no means. Because of the revenue it generates also, more students academically can have the opportunity via their grades in high school to have tuition assistance to attend college. You crybabies want money, go pro. Lebron James could never have made it as a student so he just went pro.

If you were a college athlete you definitely wouldn't be saying that. But let's just say their education, room and board is enough. ESPN, CBS, ABC, FOX, etc make millions of dollars off college athletes and schools make millions as well. Not to mention college coaches who make millions. Compare that to 20,000 plus in tuition and everything else you brought up, you mean to tell me athletes shouldn't get at least a small portion of all of that money being made off of their likeness.
