Chase The Horizon Designated Player. MLS have a salary cap, but you're allowed three designated players that can be paid more. MLS teams pretty much always have midfielders or forwards (easier to sell the shirts and gain attention, I guess) as the DPs. Liam Ridgewell is a DP, but he doesn't earn much. NYCFC have Pirlo, Villa, and Lampard as their DPs. LA Galaxy have Gerrard, de Jong, Ashley Cole, Gio Dos Santos and Keane playing for them, but De Jong and Cole aren't designated players (De Jong is guaranteed a DP contract if he plays a certain amount of games this season.) He could go to MLS, but there isn't an obvious club. China seems more likely in my opinion.

I'm not sure, but now he's agreed a new deal at Chelsea anyway. Maybe by the time that deal is up, MLS will have upped the number of DPs allowed.
