I nearly fell off my chair when I heard my name mentioned in this video! You are far too kind sir! Many thanks for yet another shout out. And might I say that the same goes for me too. The best criticisms of my own beliefs, and stimulus for thought, have come from conversations with you and other friends at Oxford just this past year. Just one small point of clarification is that I’m not doing a PhD this year, but hoping to in the near future. Thanks again!

In general you determine within reasonable (biological ) limits, the times it rests and when it doesn't. Conditioning works. If it doesn't, then either you need to consult a doctor or someone who can help you learn how to raise a child. But yeah, depending on your needs for sleep and the age of the child and whether or not you can share the load with a partner, the reasonable limits of the child will leave you with less or much less sleep than you would like, but be honest, would you really determine it to sleep more, considering the reality we live in and the needs the child has, or only in a dream universe where consequences are always in your favour? ;)

Concerning the "Most Controversial Opinions": The reason why you get negative comments is probably that your channel started as a channel on (anti)religion and therefore the audiences are often atheists. If you would have started as a vegan channel and then at one point start making videos on atheism, you would have probably also got angry comments from religious vegans. Now you get the angry comments from Bacon loving atheists.

Really? You probably based that on the millions of brilliant arrogant scientists, researchers and philosophers that are constantly pushing their books and publications in your face, right. @stylis666

@@hicow6075 I was being sarcastic. I figured that saying they'd be "...pushing their books and publications in your face...", which has never happened in the history of the existence of science would be a clear give away. So, no I can't provide evidence of scientists on a whole being arrogant, because the overwhelming majority of brilliant people is humble and the few arrogant ones usually peddle woo on the internet. Of course there are also different kinds and degrees of arrogance and one can be very humble among peers and towards the universe we live in and come across as very arrogant and condescending when talking to lay people. To take Dawkins as an example, I think he's very humble and sincere and just by his honesty he tends to wreck people's baseless horseshit and come across very condescending and I don't think he means to and I don't think it's his fault or responsibility to change it. People should just have a better basis and standards of evidence for what they believe, then Dawkins is a very pleasant and humble person to be around.

@glenecollins
@glenecollins 4 года назад
Lea F I suspect they are mostly reacting to you calling them a moral monster. My experience with it is: I hunt professionally the animals generally don’t suffer anywhere near as much as they would naturally when they starve to death from overgrazing. We have driven their natural predators to extinction and introduced predators would wipe out the smaller species but mostly can’t affect Kangaroo or wild cow, pig, buffalo etc numbers The introduced carnivores I hunt (mostly cats and dogs) in one day cause at least as much suffering as happens to a hundred times as many grass fed cows getting slaughtered. Cats play with their food and dogs chase animals down cripple them open their abdomen and leave them to die over hours or days. I worked for a while converting a piggery over to “free range” it wasn’t a nice experience. People could prevent a lot of suffering by just eating a lot less meat, if people in the developed world ate just the recommended dietary amount of meat (~ 50g per day) there would be a lot less need for intensive animal farming which is the source of most of the suffering in meat production. Giving people a moral out is I think more likely to get results, here in Australia “free range” is getting vastly more popular one of our supermarket chains has promised to only sell “ethically grown” meat and eggs after 2025. Australia has a heck of a lot more land area than people but we also already eat many times too much meat we definitely don’t need intensive farming to supply meat for several times our population. Unless we wipeout all of the herbivores we will have to kill them or introduce predators in order to produce enough food for the human population.

22:00 Actually harsh punishments (including capital punishment) do very little in reducing crime (best exemplified by the US). The main reasons being that when someone commits a crime they either don't think about the consequences or they just assume that they can get away with it. Who would commit a crime if they thought they were going to be caught? Edit: I should really start finish watching videos before commenting

@@MrGustavier By searching for "crime deterrence punishments" and related keywords on google scholar I have found several papers on the subject, many of which seem to at least partially agree with my initial comments. My statement was primarily based on personal observations and experience. Correlation obviously doesn't prove causation and these countries often differ in other aspects as well.

13:20 was a vegetarian my whole life because my family was religious. Have tasted meat before and all it tastes like is rubber to me. I dont deny the experience of people who say it tastes amazing, thats how i felt about milk and cheese. But now that ive been a vegan for about 2 years, and my association that Alex talks about between the "food" and the source is so strong that it no longer tempts me. The familiarity of the taste and the flavours no longer smell or look edible to me. It comes with a lot of practice and emotions play a huge role in this. I identify with any revolution against injustice that fundamentally denies basic respect and rights, so that sense of justice is too deeply ingrained in me to see anything as tempting anymore. I'm not a violent person for the sake of my cause, i dont think most things justify violence, even for the sake of a necessary revolution. But i urge you to consider these two points: 1. Make that association of product to the source much stronger every time you see it. 2. Try to Identify with the need for the cause. Putting yourself in the other individual's shoes helps achieve this. We dont fight because we want to change the world. We fight because we dont want the world to change us.
@steinars9567
@steinars9567 3 года назад
@Unknown Person That's like saying nature made you a Christian, just because your ancestors have been Christians for centuries. Culture made you a meat-eater. I assume you don't eat dogs? You see certain animals as food, because you have a carnistic (not to be confused with carnivorous) view of other species. Totally normal in today's world, but not the most advanced view logically and ethically speaking. You can live a perfectly healthy life on a well-planned vegan diet, and there's even a lower risk of getting certain diseases. With that in mind, if you then consider the ethical case, the effects these industries have on climate, the environment and medical concerns (risk of zoonosis and antibiotic resistance) it's clear that in advanced societies one shouldn't breed, exploit and slaughter animals for food or other resources. It's totally unnecessary, unethical and damaging. There's a lot to learn out there if this is all new information for you!

Wow! I have been accused so many times of being too "pushy" of a vegan, and when I have asked these folks how they think it would be okay or better for me to talk about veganism, it almost always comes out that they just don't want me to make them feel guilty with my arguments, and it doesn't matter how "nicely" I talk about veganism, but talking about animal exploitation is fundamentally uncomfortable for them. I wonder whether cancel culture is always truly effective (though this depends on the goal), as I imagine some people may be scared into silence/making an apology rather than apologising and changing as a result of a genuine change of viewpoint or reasoning. I wonder whether some people only change by sharing their controversial opinions with those who agree/anonymously on darker parts of the Internet/not in public, which could still potentially be damaging in terms of perpetuating harmful ideologies. I also think some may become resentful of the opposing side as a result of the disproportionate response, which could make it even harder to encourage effective discussions and meaningful change.
@caioporto9234
@caioporto9234 4 года назад
That's exactly the anti SJW culture that has been growing ever so strongly, which is as disproportionate as the other side IMO. Anyway, in my experience effective discussions are rare and usually can't include controversial topics. Which I think is sad because I'm missing my oportunity to improve specially on subjects that I can't know beforehand as the challenges gay people face. And I've seen a lot of people say bad things "off record" so I think you're spot on.

The point is not to change the mind of the person you are attacking, but to make it harder for them to communicate their views and to threaten others into silence, so they won't participate in conversation either.
@jash1966
@jash1966 3 года назад
@@MrCmon113 I personally believe that part of the goal should be changing people’s opinions in order to prevent further harm - the people being ‘silenced’ may stop being publicly harmful online but could easily continue to cause harm in the context of their own life, or by influencing others to cause harm by spreading their beliefs (with people in their personal lives or online via other means) and I think that you can simultaneously not tolerate/allow abusive/harmful behaviour whilst also having a conversation with the perpetrator about why they are behaving in a certain way/doing certain things - you can still call someone out (a popular phrase I’ve heard is ‘calling in’) for silencing/abusing others or doing wrong without shutting down a potentially productive conversation
@SaurianSavior
@SaurianSavior 3 года назад
@@jash1966 "some people may be scared into silence/making an apology rather than apologising and changing as a result of a genuine change of viewpoint or reasoning." There is no difference between these two situations. If you say something racist publicly it's harmful. There are so many racists out there who will get their ideas reinforced. So the point is to deter. CosmicSkeptic pointed out that to improve deterrence you need to increase the instances of people being called out. So we don't have to change anything. Oliver Greer that argument to me anyway makes late term abortion worse; in the analogy you would be getting the violinist to hospital they have healed up or whatever enough to live by themselves again and you tell the doctors to cut them up instead of just removing your connection.
@AtheistEve

Glen Collins Late term abortion is basically a medically- or surgically-assisted miscarriage. Even if anti-abotionists and pro-choicers wanted to, they don’t have the power to stop pregnancies from becoming toxic to the carrier at whichever stage. Maybe, in the case of the violinist, it would be like the violinist is brain dead, unable to play and is also actually destroying the kidnapped person’s internal organs. And, even though the kidnapped person wants to help and is desperate to help, they could die. In which case, get that violinist a coffin. Also, in the vast majority of people who end up making the heartbreaking decision to terminate a pregnancy, they go on to have (or have had) other viable pregnancies. So, in the case of the violinist, it would be like someone fails to keep one violinist alive, but then goes on to successfully help two others.
@glenecollins
@glenecollins 4 года назад
JE Hoyes agreed in most cases of late term abortion that are carried out in the US or here in Australia there is something wrong that is immediately life threatening to the mother and the baby is unlikely to survive. As you pointed out The analogy isn’t applicable in that case. But there are people who use the analogy to push abortions of healthy babies or ones with survivable deformities after the minimum age where the baby could survive outside the womb. I am less worried about the morals of the person who was supplying the life support to the violinist who no longer requires it in that scenario I am much more concerned with the doctors who carry it out and the society which allows it. That said I think it is a reasonable argument for allowing abortion prior to where the foetus could survive outside the womb. I don’t want to stop late term abortions because I think we need more people in the world. I think some things being prevalent in society colour how we see ourselves and change the apparent morality of other situations. A society Actively killing someone because they are deformed or because their parents make poor decisions or get down in the dumps isn’t a society I would like to live in

I haven't cared to touch any social media for ages but all of the sudden I've become very vocal about animal exploitation on both Facebook and Instagram and several people have already been telling me that they've now started to question their meat/diary consumption for the first time ever based on the information I post... so thank you for your impact on me, Alex. Here in Sweden many people take pride in that we might have the best animal standards and restrictions in the world which sadly leads to people being indifferent to further investigation and blinded by the "Meat from Sweden" marking on the packaging when, in reality, animals suffers horribly here as well, of course. Even though veganism is more common here than in some other places (comparatively), the issue of the false glorified image of our animal treatment makes it just a bit more tricky to convince some people as that is their go-to argument. Let's keep fighting the good fight though. Thanks again!

@Pieter Jan Zijlstra Agreed, Pieter. We also easily get fooled by seemingly humane laws that are to ensure high standards within our systems. For example, even though there is an EU regulation on tail docking on pigs, it only regelates "routinely" docking and in practice, 90% of all pigs within the EU get their tails cut off and their teeth pulled out anyway. At least this is strictly forbidden in Sweden and we give straw to the pigs instead to stimulate their behaviour. It's still sad that this country should be regarded as some "haven" for animals considering they suffer in similar ways otherwise , just as in the rest of the world.

For the person who asked for motivation and that they like the taste a lot, you might want to consider that meat is mostly just texture. The flesh is seasoned with herbs and plants, so that is what is giving it majority of taste. The texture can be replicated in today’s world and is being replicated. I’ve had non dairy products that taste EXACTLY like actual dairy. It’s all about finding the right brands and experimenting for a while. As far as I’m concerned a plant-based diet _is_ nutritious and healthy. You do need to be careful about getting all your nutrients; just eating a normal salad is not enough. But it is totally possible to get all your nutrients if you plan well. As for killing animals if killing is not bad for the person (or animal?) that dies... I hope you are not suggesting that killing conscious beings is justified. Dying does not imply murder, right? One can die naturally, by accident, by choice, and then by murder. Not all those deaths are ethical, are they?

Their life may be “ethical” but their inevitable and traumatic end is not. It’s a betrayal to that animal, perhaps even more so if they had an ‘ethical’ life. They want to continue living their life and fight mercilessly in their final moments. It’s completely unnecessary for them to be killed and thus cannot be compared to a person dying. If a person is murdered the killer will face consequences. So it becomes about legality. But morally there is no difference between the life of any species.

Dear Alex, a few honest questions: 1- Your endeavour to address the problem of death, considering that death is not bad for the deceased, wont it go against your vegan belief? During a lifetime of a cow for instance, it is not obvious that to live in the wild would will bring a less suffering or risk then being fed and protected against predators and disease for years till became food. Much of human suffering are connected with the psicological ability to think in abstract terms about time and space, thats why we feel bad about having a terminal disease (more bad than the organic pain itself). It is not evident that animals are aware of loosing some long term plans for life. If death is not bad for the deceased and to "total amount" of suffering and risky situations in the wild life is probably several times bigger than to be fed for life until became food, what is precisely the unnecessary suffering you would avoid from being vegan? 2- Rights are a human creation, it is necessary to have abstract reasoning and the ability to stablish a contract and be capable to enforce the codes (law). Of course animal rights are rights that we organize for them, they dont know and dont care (cannot communicate in a systematic abstract way). If we forbid people to eat meat, how should we address the right of property for the animals? All of the livestock live in private properties and the owners cannot afford to the expanses of keeping than alive, vaccinated, healthy and protected agains natural predators, besides they will need the land to produce a gigantic amount of non-meat food. It is obvious that we cannot force the producers to keep spending hundreds of billions of dollars in order to get zero revenue. Where are we going to send the livestock? There is no much of a wild environment available to receive them and if it was possible to give them a wildlife, a gigantic ecological unbalance would take place with so many food to a very few natural predators. In a few years we would have to deal with overpopulation of wolves, felines, crocodiles etc. 3- Just in case that you answer that they will produce food from the livestock they have already and not grow more animals, how is that a good thing for their species? We are almost 8 billion because we succeed in the natural gene struggle to get spread and perpetuated, we are 8 billion because we can produce energy to sustain this population. We are not the winners, probably bacteria and other microorganism do better than us on that measure of species success. The genuine doom for any species is to reach extinction, no doubt about that, why are you so sure that your vegan call is good for the species you want to protect and set free? Would we humans also be responsible to avoid their extinction?

Paulo, I apologize as I am not nearly smart enough to fully understand your question. I will do my best to try to add some insight that may be able to guide you to find answers however. I was under the assumption that the goal of veganism is to prevent animals (whose sole purpose would be to provide for humans by dying) from being born. In a world where we don't eat meat, we would find the existence of cows, chickens etc pretty much pointless. So we wouldn't continuously be breeding them. It's at this point that I would recommend you looking into anti-natalism (and efilism) which argues that life itself is not a good thing. And that bringing life into the world is morally wrong. I can't speak for Alex, but the complete extinction of all animals is something I would argue is a good end-goal.

@@antibreeder1m being totally honest with you, I did not think that the video made a good case for veganism. It is difficult so far without bringing the need to reduce suffering of wild animals. I don't agree with the main premisses. 1- Suffering is bad. Suffering is a normal result of taking risks. We live unbalanced all the time and struggle to avoid suffering and pain, but we cannot live without, because it is natural and it is a part of the "nonsuffering" part of our live. See this guy on the video. Seems a person with a good life. He is suffering for a question impossible to solve without exterminating all lives from earth (stop the suffering of all animals). 2- Animals suffer. Yes, as every living being, animals face the life as a struggle. To stay alive means to fight for energy. It is a very tough life. People suffer a lot. 3- We need to avoid suffering - Yes, but we cannot even conceive a world without it or without the perspective of it. People are wealthy in rich countries, but very unhappy. I couldnt understand the video as a good case for veganism. The moral argument I understand, but bring to mankind the burden to save hundreds of trillions of animals, dont sound appealing to me.

@@haijj I could never imagine something like that. We are rational beings and we can invent some sophisticated motives to live, but they are naturalists, the main goal of any species, i think, is to reproduce and spread their genes. Extinction is the end, forever the end. But, if you say so. I cannot see how the extinction could be seen as of their best interest (animals) and is new to me that it can also be a goal of vegans. Always thought them as nature-connected people.

@@prportinho thanks for your detailed approach to this matter. I have addressed the shortcomings of a natural world in the topic of #livingmodelling but not really discussed it at length or with great clarity. However, consider a world that you would be making from scratch (aka you as God over the Garden of Eden). Who would you choose to put in it? How would you be able to manage it and minimise the suffering and hardship in it? All these are, I feel, valid questions. I would be interested to learn how you feel about #livingmodelling.

and peaceful protesters get away with looting, arson and violence way too often. this particular blade cuts both ways. regarding police and other institution where cronyism is rampant i think we need a new form of oversight for all state employees that roots out corruption from top to bottom and is not beholden to state authority but answers only to the citizens . a form of institutionalized mob justice if you will that acts objectively and fact based on existing laws and regulations rather than emotion and feelings as the violent mob normally does. think inquisition rather than violent mob. despite the bad reputation of the inquisition they actually took great care to find out wether a person was indeed a heretic and most suspects were acquitted of their accusations.

Ocasio-Cortez4prez2022 This doesn’t seem to be a popular opinion, but I’m going to use Ellen Degeneres for a recent example. I think that’s been a long brewing hit job from the anti-gay right. She’s basically been cancelled for ‘not being very nice.’ I understand that there were problems at the Ellen Show, but she was not directly responsible for any of the things that took place, other than her being the name behind it. There are many other examples of a person doing something questionable, like the ‘I Know the Owner’ lady confronting the BLM guy in San Francisco. She was certainly being an unpleasant & shitty, but I don’t think it’s appropriate that she should lose her job & career. Now, the woman in The Central Park ramble that called the police? Absolutely. That was heinous & could’ve gotten that man killed & she knew exactly what was happening. Anyway, sorry for rambling. I’d be happy to hear any criticism, especially on the Ellen situation.

I know that this is an older video, and no one will read this, but I just wanted to get out my thoughts on cancel culture. My problem with it is that the term has become so ubiquitous, that it's essentially meaningless. Cancel culture is defined so broadly, people claim that it applies to so many situations, that actually forming an opinion on it just seems fruitless. Some people define it as you have here; someone is "cancelled" when old comments or views of theirs are later discovered, and then the whole weight of the world (or, at least, Twitter) is brought down on them, and their life is ruined. The problem with this view is that cancel culture is essentially defined as an inherently bad thing. There cannot be a just action under cancel culture, as that would be proportionate, and thus no longer fall under cancel culture. The opposing view is the broad version, which I see mainly coming from conservatives online and in the media. They often cry "Cancel Culture!" any time anyone is criticized for anything, or even any time something changes or is replaced (see Mr. Potato Head or Dr. Seuss). There is a Twitter account called something like "Time since Jschlatt has been cancelled". If cancel culture has any meaning or limitations on its definition, he has definitely not been "cancelled". He's still doing fine; nothing has really changed for him. Or, the definition of cancel culture lies somewhere between these two extremes. At this point, however, where we draw the line is completely personal and arbitrary. When people disagree on if cancel culture is good or not, it's likely that they are working with different definitions. They aren't really arguing about the same thing; they're just yelling at each other. Cancel culture has become a meaningless buzzword. It has ceased to actually refer to any sort of trend. I hope that came across clearly. I spent way too long writing this. As an appendix, I want to say that I don't really know anything about Schlatt or the situation, and I don't care to. It's just an example. If learning more would change the argument, then I concede. Anyway, great video!

6:50 The explanation is simple. When you talk about atheism, religion, philosophy, etc. you point out the flaws in someone's reasoning. Your average viewer likes your content because he or she shares your opinion and you point the finger at someone else. But when you talk about veganism all the sudden you point the finger at them and the flaws in their reasoning and ethics.

It's called laying a guilt trip. People don't like to be guilt tripped. Veganism is also absolutist, and people usually don't go for that either.
@AV57
@AV57 3 года назад
@@andywomack3414, there’s no way to advocate for animal rights that won’t make some people feel guilty. When people blame vegans for guilt tripping all they’re doing is trying to shift their emotional burden onto the vegans. It’s cowardly.

@@AV57 I'm for more humane treatment for the animals we eat. They should live with us. We should get to know them, and celebrate their lives as we consume them. Having a contrary opinion about something, and expressing that opinion is cowardly somehow. I respect vegans, I understand their thinking, and share a sense of outrage at the way our capitalist system treats life like a commodity to be exploited. Changing that system should be a common cause.

@@andywomack3414, What I was referring to was when people accuse vegans of guilt-tripping. That’s usually nothing more than a way of shifting responsibility. It’s a shaming tactic to try and make vegans be quiet. Merely disagreeing is not that.

@@andywomack3414, have you ever considered that animal deserve to be free, as opposed to being exploited more nicely? It’s great that you don’t endorse the worst of animal exploitation, but why stop there? Isn’t the logical conclusion of a free society that said free society doesn’t endorse the erosion of freedom?

Private platforms need to be able to deplatform people based on their TOS. Imagine if a restaurant wasn't allowed to kick out someone for shouting about the jewish cabal. The owners of private platforms need to protect their bottom line and for that to be possible they must be allowed to enforce a TOS. The day private platforms can no longer deplatform people is the day social media dies.
@OMGwtfSTFUbrb
@OMGwtfSTFUbrb 4 года назад
@@schpau9339 here's where you allow the platform to kick out people for shouting and not for what they are shouting about. at least its unbiased. give people a time out of 24 hours every time they are toxic regardless of what is said. promotes civil discussion of all topics and keeps the toxins out. plus it's an easily applicable and temporary punishment thus increasing chance of being caught while it being a pretty low punishment. basically a time out that forces you to calm down and think over what happened. maybe change your mind or alternatively come up with a counter argument that is actually good instead of just screeching.
