Throw-ins have an incredible potential that’s being virtually ignored by practically every football team. There are clearly ways to speed up the delivery process, but instead of bemoaning the time they take, it might be better for coaches to focus on a more scientific way to retain possession. If teams simply won the ball more often, the eight minutes throw-ins take per match might not be such a deadweight loss.

What should be a pennalty to the team losing the ball off the field, would become a weapon to the deffending team always kicking it off to hold the attack, just like american football. Imagine you throwing -in only backwords. Cause that's what would happen. Every team would put his markers on the line of the ball, obligating the other to go back all the time, even gaining an counter-attack maybe. This would be a 0x0 paradise.

The unintended but beneficial purpose of Throw ins, Free kicks, Goal Kicks is to sometimes slow down the game. And its not a bane. Football is already a strenuous, fast pace game. Slowing it down helps the players take a breather and recuperate. We don't want more injuries to our loved players, do we? Otherwise, teams like City and Barcelona would keep passing and tire the other team out even more they already do. For now, the rule is ok as is, even though I would love to see the game speeding up even more.

@@Flinstone_Edible There is. Stopping the clock when the ball goes out of play. This would, IMO, be the very best rule change football can do, since it would stop the annoying time wasting going on with substitutions, goal kicks, throw-ins and fouls (though with fouls players will probably still be rolling all over the place annoyingly to try and get the offender a yellow card, but at least they won't feign injuries to waste time). The problem of course becomes that matches will take way longer, or the amount of time played has to be brought back to, say, 60 or 70 minutes.
@Flinstone_Edible
@Flinstone_Edible 5 лет назад
@@thomasvrielink299 good point, if it did come to matches taking longer then there would definitely be a change in both halves being 45 mins and a full game being 90 mins, I think it would be 30 mins for each half and 60 mins for a full match, the problem with that in itself would probably be added time not being there meaning we won't get those extravagant football moments where goals are scored in added time.

I think conversations like this come from a perspective of needing to speed up the game for TV audiences. I think anyone who actually plays takes those short stoppages to catch their breath. It's already a grueling stamina sport and with no pauses I worry the pace would actually slow down as players would be trying to conserve energy.

Free kicks are a bigger time waster than throw-ins --> "yea we should make all throw ins into free kicks to save time" WHERE IS THE LOGIC
@jacksondolly3248
@jacksondolly3248 5 лет назад
Free kicks on the field are much different than a "free kick" would be off the field. one of the best and most efficient rules in futsal is the kick in instead of a throw in rule. you have four seconds, the ball has to be stopped, on the line, and you have to be very accurate with your pass. If the rule were placed into regular football matches, because the field area is about 10 times, the amount of time you get would be upped to like 6 or 8 seconds, making the opportunity to "lob it in the box" a very rare occurrence, as the player putting it back in would have to put the ball on the line, make sure it wasn't moving, then back up, wait for his team to go up, then kick it.....in 6-8 seconds. unless it was a cleared ball from the defense within the defender's half and your team is already up there. Throw in's don't add anything to the game on any consistent level. having there be no offsides on a throw in results in a goal in an astronomically low level, it's hardly worth it. Then with the player walking up the sideline like 10 yards from where it went out, then being told to go back, then taking another 5-10 seconds to get back and pick a target, THEN finally throwing the ball back in, it's utter bs. Some throw in's take approximately 20 seconds from the time it goes out. I really like how basketball is structured, how every stoppage stops the clock, and even "time wasting" doesn't effect the game or give an unfair advantage to the winning team. I think there are ways to help throw in's and make them more effective, to make it a non time waster, like add a time limit....like you have 6-8 seconds to get the ball and throw it when it goes out. if you don't get it off, it's a turnover resulting in the opposing team's throw in. Keeping a short required time limit would definitely speed up play, and make positioning and quick thinkers and players much more necessary.

You'd very quickly see kick ins slowed down like a throw in, as players would be looking to keep possession. At least a throw enables a player to launch the ball at height, over a decent distance; one that would be difficult with a kick into a congested area at knee height. In the end, it would only be of any benefit if kick ins were taken very quickly. Any delay in that quick, initial kick in, would likely end up causing much longer delays in the long run.

I really wouldnt want to change this aspect of the game, its just one of the inherently special aspects of football and I feel while the main argument (speed up play; waste less time) "sounds" good, i feel like its just one of the many continuous changes that some ppl want to try and implement just for the sake of changing something. Id much rather just implement one of the alternatives ive already come across here in the comments such as stopping the clock when the balls goes out of bounds, putting a time limit (lets say 10 sec or something) for a throw-in, and if not done within that time constraint the player gets a card, or as someone else suggested maybe transferring possession over to the opposing team if you take too long. Idk, i prefer some alt options like that as opposed to just scrapping with a traditional ruling which in my opinion there really is no necessity to change. I may sound like an old geezer, but i am a firm believer in the old adage "if its not broken, dont fix it". Don't get me wrong, I am def not against changes in football, in fact there are like 3 particular things that i would maybe want to change, or at least ideas i have tossed in the air to see if maybe it would "improve" the sport even more so. I just simply dont think throw ins is one of them. I would hate to fast forward into the future like 300 yrs from now and go watch a football match only to see so many changes id barely recognize the sport anymore lol.

Does pose a challenge for referees at a lower level of the game though. The FA want the game to be more or less the same in terms of laws at all levels, and clubs at the lower level of the game can't afford to have another referee just for timekeeping (nor are there enough people refereeing), and adding it to the job of the main ref could get overwhelming for them.
@ComradeOgilvy1984
@ComradeOgilvy1984 5 лет назад
ChIlledM1lk The ref just needs to pause his watch without accidentally failing to unpause. This could be achieved with a big fat button that only pauses while it is being pushed. There is no need for high precision. It just has to be accurate enough that the team in the lead knows that playing the ball in slowly is not a useful time wasting tactic. In principle, the referee already has the authority to let the game continue if too much time wasting occurred, by just plain guessing the amount of stoppage time. The key change would just be the explicit intention that throw ins never burn more than, say, 4 seconds off the clock, so just get on with it.

AG22 There’s a 6 second rule for players. But none for the ball boy. So closing the loophole for time wasting means the league or tournament would hire professional ballboys that’s unaffiliated with both teams. Imagine getting certified to be ball boy, just like coaches & referees. At the moment most ball boys are academy players from the home team. They’re only paid a small stipend to distribute balls during a match & they’re completely biased to the home team.

It's always worth looking at other sports. Field hockey was really innovative in this and speeded up the game by: 1) having multiple balls lined up along the outside of the field so always available. 2. Allowing the player to hit (throw) to themselves - this means the fast break still keeps momentum even if a defender toes it out in a desperate tackle.

I like throw ins because they add some extra flair to the game. The point of the throw in though, should be to deliver the ball back into play at or from the point of which it exited the pitch. I don't think it would be gross to demand that the throws be taken while standing still on the edge of the pitch line. This eliminates the most time-wasting long throw takers but also allows those with good arms to deliver the ball as far as they can where they are. Also, maybe you could add a new assistant role between the ball boys and the players? Like a "ball warden" or something, whose jobs it would be to follow the games flow and pace on each side of the field, like the linesmen, and then have new balls ready for the players, when the ball exits play. The point of the ball boys would then be to supply the warden with balls when he delivers one to a player. That way you eliminate the potential of local lads giving their home side an edge.

That's because in ice hockey, players have better protection from injury compared to football. If football pitches had barriers, any player involved in a 1on1 duel closer to the barriers (whether the duel is in the air or on the ground) would be more likely to collide with the barriers and get hurt.
@whatchachattin

Worth noting that in futsal the 4 seconds begins once you have control of the ball, so you can still timewaste by wandering slowly toward the edge of the pitch or discussing a set play with teammates before picking up the ball to prepare for a kick in. Also kick ins are rarely directly hit as passes as neither foot can be on the pitch while taking it, so more often a second player will stand nearby and the kick in taker will lay it off.

Two simple rule changes would completely overhaul the game for the better: 1) Offside is measured based on trailing foot position - a player is offside if their foot is completely past the last man. 2) Clock stops as soon as ball leaves play. This would prevent the ridiculous time wasting teams now deploy.
@PassivesAbseits
@PassivesAbseits 4 года назад
Louis van Gaal also proposed this, when he was coaching at Bayern Munich, his logic was completly different though: Considering that you rarely play against Stoke City, most teams are actually quit comfortable giving up Throw Ins while defending, since they are easy to defend against 90% of the teams you face. If you would surrender a free kick to the oposition, this would change and so defenders couldnt just act destructivly on the sidelines, but would have to put some thought into what they are willing to give up... Coming from the "are Corner Kick irrelevant" Video, this could actually lead to Teams rather surrendering a corner then a free kick from 15-20 Yards from the sideline. Which might be interessting. But now, when you are under pressure, you just get rid of the Ball to the sideline and regroup without much punishment.

it could be like this - throw-ins have to go backwards, defending players cant intercept the throw they have to let the receiving player touch it first, and they must be level with the thrower before they can charge down the player who will receive the ball. So then it's like the possession is actually guaranteed for the team who supposedly has possession until the first player takes a touch. The shallower the angle that you throw the ball backwards, the closer the defender will be when you take the touch, so if you throw it back by 20 yards you will have more time on the ball to use it before you can be challenged. If you are standing right next to the player receiving the ball you can't interfere, you are offside in the rugby sense of the rule, you can't get involved until they pass the ball to the next player, or until they run forward past the point that the throw-in was taken from. Players who were behind where the throw-in was taken can challenge but not players who were in front. so, for example, the striker cannot stand next to a centre back and challenge him as soon as he receives the throw. Makes sense? Final rule - if you get a throw-in anywhere level with or closer to your own goal than the edge of your penalty area, its a goal kick instead of a throw-in. These are just my ideas, I think it would be better. This would eradicate attacking throw-ins, but it would be replaced by throwing the ball back to someone who then whips in the cross, whilst the defender tries to close them down.
@dr_jamie_ranger
@dr_jamie_ranger 5 лет назад
Throw-ins could be replaced by a kick-in with the limitation that the kicker's standing foot can't leave the ground. That stops it from becoming a situation better than a corner kick or a free kick, because the most you can do is play an incisive ball with medium level of power behind it. Plus, being a 'kick-in specialist' would be to work on your balance and leg muscles, which are paramount to the sport anyway.
@MrCheddahcheese
@MrCheddahcheese 5 лет назад
I love Throw-ins. So underutilized and somewhat of a wildcard. If anything, I would get the ref to book any team that decides to make a second person take it; whoever picks it up takes it. If they take longer than 10 seconds, the play is now a freekick to the opposing side and a yellow (potentially their second yellow in quick succession).
@BorussiaComps
@BorussiaComps 5 лет назад
I would want to see a kick-in in football but with a rule that the recipient of the kick-in can't be in opponent's penalty area when the pass is made and when he receives the pass. That way we wouldn't see kick-ins be used as corner kicks basically.
