The thing with kdramas is that when you first start watching it with subtitles, you can't understand anything and you are unable to enjoy the series. But after you're used to watching it in subtitles you can't go back to dubb. Dubbed dramas DON'T do justice, actually. They seem funny for some reason
Same goes for Turkish dramas, once you start watching those in Turkish with English subtitles then you can't enjoy the dubbed Urdu versions which don't do justice to the original.
One thing Gangubai did right is that they come out of that Umrao Jan Ada Syndrome. They didn't glamorized aur sensationalised it. And Alia Bhatt was just too good!!
Yeah same, they focused mainly on the dark, ugly and cruel side of brothels rather than just focusing on that glam and romanticised version of it that bollywood usually does with showing brothels like opulent palaces and prostitutes as decked up queens.
They didn’t glamorise prostitution, but gangubai was shown as a hero , later know as mother of all prostitutes , when she was actually a mafia queen, made others go through the same fate as hers.
@@mahnoorqureshi3281 I don't know about that, but in the context of film, they showed a young girl coming to the brothel and Gangubai conversed with her and then sends her home!!
@@mariaatariq3713 When she comes back meeting the PM, getting back the area, she is shown on a truck with every one around standing and clapping for her. She becomes a leader, a hero, a savior. She asked PM to legalise prostitution, when she could have asked for a better life for all the other women of the area. She continued prostitution as a business, buying girls and making them do the same. No girl would come to that area and start prostitution on her own as a free will or wish. Obviously the girls would be sold to her, as she was. The only difference was that her attitude was not bad with the girls and was known as the mother of prostitutes. But she did not send all girls back to their families. If she did, there would be no business. Also she was a part of mafia, a partner of the character played by Ajay in his illegal business.
Alia Bhatt was phenomenal in Udta Punjab. Its an unusual movie that leaves a huge impact on you.Alia Bhatt’s ’Highway’ is one of my all time favorite movies.
It's a misconception that Vidya Balan or any other experienced actress could have done the role better. Gangubai was at the peak of her political career at the age of 35, climbing the ladders of taking ownership of her kotha and becoming a madam extremely fast partly due to her ambition and partly due to being a rakhi sister of Karim Lala. It was essential for a young actress to have done the role and Alia has been aptly cast.
You have got it the other way round. Watching in dubbed version cant get the feelings across. Subbed>>>>>>dubbed. Even if you dont understand what they are saying, the emotions, the feelings get through. Somebody else voicing it would never be the same.
Oh definitely. Everyone should watch kdramas. They are very good from plotline to the characters and the details. Extraordinary Attorney Woo is a really good drama. I have been watching kdramas with subtitles for so long that it doesn't bother me. Also kdramas might have similarities to pakistani dramas because they are all Asians but they definitely have good plot and reasons for everything.
You will be hooked when you start watching kdramas, amna is right at one point coz of language barrier it is bit difficult but kdrama fans like me nearly comprehend their language, vincenzo, dp, flower of evil are few dramas you can find in dubbed version :)
Extraordinary Attorney woo is such a nice, warm drama that you literally go in her world and the main male lead is setting bars higher than anyone has ever set before. Also this series will be adapted by US as some big agencies have asked for its remake!! I hope they make one though but no one can do the justice with Attorney Woo played by Eu Bin
Was kinda looking forward for thiss gangubai review for beyond borders. I have watched it twice and ig I’m gonna watch it again tonight. Umm just a humble request can you both please WATCH DARLINGS AND REVIEW THAT TOO !!
it feels so surreal that you guys reviewed a kdrama! one thing id like to add is that dubbed versions never do justice to the drama i hope you guys get the hang of subtitles, also for sumn who liked extraordinary attorney woo (a law based drama) i’d really like to recommend Vincenzo, it has an amazing storyline w great plot twists that always keep you hooked
Yes dubbing on kdramas never do justice but its also fun watching dubbed bcz I'm always curious jo original me dialogues thy wo urdu me kese karein gy love to see their effort
Guys I am watching extraordinary attorney woo & it is soooo goooood. Amina It would be good if you had mentioned our warm-hearted, kind lee junho, but every episode makes you want more of it. It's amazing. Plus amina Koreans rarely make 2nd season.
Gangubai is a world in itself. It transports you to that world and keeps you hooked until the very end of it. Of course Alia was phenomenal but I’m so glad that Aamna mentioned Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaz and other character artists cuz I remember when I watched the movie and the scenes where Seema Pahwa comes, I literally had goosebumps. Just goes to show how phenomenal she is and definitely praiseworthy! Please keep reviewing these movies, please keep addressing character artists(not just lead actors) and please keep doing ‘beyond the border’ series. Lots of love!
thank you for covering Extraordinary Attorney Woo! It's certainly going in the books as one of the best k-dramas. Regarding abuse and violence that's depicted in the show, I find it encouraging that the story at least acknowledges the patriarchal society and gender discrimination (something that is barely addressed in Pakistani dramas). The variety in cases, highlighting able-ism and awareness of the autism spectrum makes it very interesting!! As for the subtitles, if you watch a couple k-dramas, you get the hang of specific phrases and it's a really cool way to get acquainted with another language
I was quite smitten by the world building of Gangubai, the starkly wonderful performances and the score as well. Although I believe that there was still a blimey effort to subdue the atrocities felt by these women. I know they did show many of these raw atrocities but I still felt them to be sanitized at several places in the film. Having said that it is a thorough entertainer. Will definitely watch Virgin River after this review.
Gangubhai become a craze in Thailand. it's trended as no.1 for some time on netflix here. a whole generation who never watched Hindi movies were intrigued and impressed. plenty of tikktok clips made imitating the scenes and dances.
I would also love to hear your views on Korean netflix series Vincenzo its my all time favourite drama. Please do a beyond borders on it as well. Obviously, when ever you guys would have time to watch it.
As soon as I saw extraordinary attorney woo's picture on the display picture, I clicked as fast as I could. Literally so happy that people are recognizing kdramas
K dramas are definitely addictive... Once u r in there is no way back... I suggest u to watch Hymn of Death and my liberation notes.... They both are just beyond brilliant....
@@wrezzii My love from the star. It's about an alien and a young actress. Ik people might be weirded out by the alien part, but I think it's actually well-done. He is very similar to humans and it's interesting to see his journey
Was just watching Extraordinary Attorney Woo. She is too cute. Very interesting watch. Dubbed version would have destroyed Woo’s personality. Half of the expression is in the voice.
Once one gets over the having to read the subtitles part there is no way they would prefer dubbed videos. Here’s to hoping that you would both be trying to expand the beyond borders to kdramas and kmovies
Yeah i know.. And once you know how to watch and read subtitles at a same time... There is no going back... Even you are watching something in your native language and there's subtitles, you will read subtitles for sure... 🤣
💯 I started watching kdramas in 2014/15 and once you get over the subs there is no going back, I don't even have to stop much for reading the subs now 🤭🤭
I want to see extraordinary attorney woo so bad. But I'm waiting for it to end because I'll really die of curiosity if I start watching it now because of the type of drama it is and how it creates intrigue after every episode. The struggle is real here guys... It's really hard to wait for it to end
oh i love mushy romance shows, virgin river is definitely on my list. i love the shows or movies set in old british era too I've watched persuasion, pride and prejudice, bridgerton, emma etc. im open to suggestions preferably romantic in genre. contrary to your opinion, I actually like the shows in it's original audio rather than them being dubbed. the dubbed version never truly captures the essence that of the original audio.
I paused your show halfway through, and watched full Gangubai with no scenes skipped.. then continued with your review... OMG what a movie it is! What a performance by Alia. Kudos 👏 to the writer director!
You guys should review darlings also, its on Netflix released yesterday, it has alia bhatt and she has given another tremendous performance, its a dark comedy and it talks about domestic violence, there are other strong cast members also like shefali shah, vijay verma and the movie is just outstanding it will give many women hope of getting out of toxic relationships
I watched the film yesterday after watching your review and it was a terrific film. Some amazing performances and ofcourse Alia was no more that usual Alia we see in films. She was phenomenal!!! She completely changed herself as if she was living that character in her heart and soul.
I will watch Gangubai.....now that you have pointed it out and praised it. Aamna ji , you mentioned Seema Pahwa ji. Some people might not know that before marriage her name was Seema Bhargav. Her mom Saroj Bhargav was amazing actor of Radio and TV, Seema ji's brother Abhay Bhargav is also an actor. There was a TV drama called Hum Log. Seema ji played the eldest daughter. in it. Just a little information.
Loved your review....now if possible review Panchayat on prime video....it's simple and situational comedy with rural setting.....and Raveena Tandon Aranyak on Netflix....it's crime thriller...again a brilliantly made series...both are one of the fine products come out of India.
The first expression was like you can always turn your tragedy into your success when you have accepted it. Acceptance is very important. So yes Gangubai Khatiawadi was worth watching
Extraordinary attorney woo is amazing! Feel good drama. After watching loads of kdrama now subtitles doesn't make much difference. We can figure out the korean. Female lead did a wonderful job. Must watch
After watching Gangubai I thought I wish it should not be ended so soon, it was amazing movie, lovely performance and each and every scene was fab. I really wanna see sequel of Gangubai
Loved Amna's discussion of "Virgin River"- its dreamy, mushy romance and feel-good story- we all want a bit of Virgin River stardust on us. In love with the chemistry of Jack and Mel and with the fact that they're ordinary people with real life tragedies and obstacles and to see them going through those obstacles hand-in-hand is certainly a treat ! Loved this one.
Now Darlings (produced by SRK and Alia Bhatt) and Raazi need your review dear A&H, both have Alia &how 🌻 while I runnnnn to watch the BBC story on SRK! #BeyondBordersIsAwesome
Extraordinary attorney woo is my current watch alongside "Big mouth" and I am so happy that you guys reviewed it. Such a fun watch with brilliant script and acting. You guys should definitely review more k-dramas, big mouth being my suggestion!
As a k drama lover, i am so happy that you discussed about Extraordinary attorney woo and u loved it💖 And one thing more once you get hooked to kdramas with subtitles you cant enjoy them dubbed😄
I found Gangubai to be really really good. It kept me hooked till the last minute. Alia was ahhhhmazing as Gangu and SLB's direction is of course one of the best! Totally worth watching 🔥💯
I am studying psychology. A few days back my fellow+friend suggested me Extraordinary Attorney Woo as she was explaining me the criteria of Austim Specturm Disorder according to DSM-V-TR
when I watched Gangubai, that Pakistani drama serial "Dil Na Umeed tuo Nahi" clicked in my mind and then I could clearly differentiate the messaging is so strong in Gangubai that some of that point that serial couldn't highlight verbally Gangubai did. For some time i thought prostitution is only sexual but there was this message in DIL NAUMEED TUO NAHI where men take out their frustration on prostitutes and many of them are murdered but that was even more clear in Gangubai. In pakistani dramas when it comes to messaging directors forget about dialogue delivery I guess as in musht e khak many people in our society dont know that after khula whats the remarrying procedure they could actually highlight it that would have given that drama better. Any ways i would say directors should consult amna and hassan for that 😝 on a serious note dramas could come out as better version of themselves
My son is on spectrum and i will definitely watch this extraordinary OW… my son is obsessed with horses and his imagination revolves around that… he is just 4 and amaze me everyday with his imaginations and his perceptions about things.. we see a cream pot but for him its a circle…
Aamna, your choice of all these 3 beyond borders films are just fantastics. I am hooked to Virgin River and Extraordinary Attorney Woo. I really find you two so worldly and beyond any negativity.
Attorney woo is just so awesome and unique k drama and i feel very happy that you guys review this one. i really hope that you review more K-Dramas in future.
I am watching attorney woo and neither am I into legal dramas nor am I into Korean dramas but this has intrigued my interest. She is so brilliant and natural and I love her quirks they are so heartwarming❤️
I have watched and loved extraordinary attorney woo. The main lead is neurodivergent and is portrayed with empathy, understanding and care. I am glad this show didn't use an character with Autism as an comic like Big bang did. I wish the main lead was played by an neurodivergent as well. This show reminds me of Atypical on Netflix, Sam in that show loved penguins rather than whales. Thanks for your review Aamna. You are treat to listen to as always.
Thanks for this review guys! A very fresh recommendation for you, speically Amna! Please do watch Darlings on Netflix and let us know how you liked it 😊
Can you please talk about Bajrangi Bhaijaan? I know it's too late but I want to know your opinion on the film and the Pakistani element/representation?
You guys can sympathize with GANGUBAI but not with MAHEK from 'Kaisi teri khudgarzi'... What yaar!!!... I know they are entirely different topics and subjects BUT everything that happened to gungubai was based on real stories so everything that is happening toh MAHEK also represents some reality of our society (girls who are kidnapped and raped by their close ones have stories similar to mehak's). I've heard these kind stories in real life.... A story like this happened in my own family, my cousin tried to shoot himself for a girl, got saved allhamdulillah, his behavior was quite similar to shamsher at that point. (long story short) So my point is 'Kaisi teri khudgarzi' does exaggerates and portrays ill logical events But the story is good and derived from real life. Give MEHAK a chance.... She's scared and thought her family will save her(like every girl of our country is taught from childhood that she is dependent upon her family for her problems so she is mentally not able to do something but gangubai did have no one so she stood up, every girl has her own circumstances) Women all over the world goes through all kinds of abuse whether someone understands it oor not.
An absolutely brilliant review on GBK. Super talented Alia was mesmerizing in it. Love Amna’s baat that she couldn’t sell virgin river to Hassan 😁😁😁. As usual you both rock. Even I don’t watch most of the dramas I love watching you both. Keep it up and God bless 🌹🧡❤️
I am so happy that you are watching extraordinary attorney woo. I just love the drama because it's also a survival story of a woman and they are showing it very beautifully😘😍. Please keep watching and appreciating good content.👍🏻 Love you both 💜💜
kdramas is the best thing happened to me in 2016, and then there was no going back. pakistani dramas are not even worth a second chance after I was introduced to the Kworld, pakistaniyo ko shadi k ilawa koi or kaam nai h
It's your opinion. In my opinion kdramas don't even deserve a second. Pakistani Dramas is way better. You can watch and like whatever you wants too. It doesn't mean you start bashing Pakistani industry.
@@hirazaheer1832 Not all of dramas have Saas Bahu thing. Must have few but it doesn't mean everything is SaaS Bahu. Kdramas are very bold and you can't watch with a families. Kdramas are not for family.
Amna you have totally sold me a virgin river and extraordinary attorney woo. I had the virgin river on my list for the last few years but didn't fine time to watch it. but after your recommendation, I am hooked on it and love it totally. Now talking about Gangubai .... its was spectacular the story, the acting, and the cinematography Thumbs-up
Easter Eggs in Gangubai: It had poster on wall of SLB' s father's only produced Movie,l - Jahazi Lootera, Also posters of movies of that era and in the theaters of the same name. 2nd Meta Easter Egg is , Maa ka naam kaafi nahi hai is symbolic to SLB's own name - Sanjay 'Leela' Bhansali - Leela is his mother's name.
Amna, definitely agree with you on both the series you mentioned! Love virgin river, love attorney woo! 😊 Started watching the latter a couple of days ago. Both are high on my recommendation list as well!
Thankyou for recommendation of ATTORNEY WOO ,started on episode 3 .I haven't watched any K drama due to reading subtitles 😒but I am stuck know Thankyou Amna Plz do recommend more on Netflix series ,movies .
Waalikumassalam Hassan bhai Aamna baji .Thank you so much for review. There are many good movies in netflix like Tom cruise Vanila sky it is amazing movie and ending is confusing and Have u watch The King drama and LOTBS ( Lee min ho ) its is very nice K drama . I Hope you guys will definitely enjoy . Thank you
5:41 wesy on a very lighter note .... Ab tak jitna b something haute daikha hy i have noticed Aminah ji never admit ever that her point was not valid instead she starts giving lame excuses .... Ye adat mujh mn b hy thori thori so i can relate with her:)
I would slightly disagree with gangubai. To me, it didn't really go anywhere. Prostitution and brothel system as a concept has been better handled in films like Love, Sonya (absolutely marvelous) I feel. Also, while I agree that Alia Bhatt has acted fabulously in this film, I don't think she's been casted well. It is particularly significant to me when compared to other actors like the one for Raziya Bai or perhaps Kamli. Alia Bhatt was amazing in movies like highway (in terms of casting) and recently in Darlings. Actors like Huma Qureshi, Vidya Balan, Mrunal Thakur, Richa Chaddha could maybe have been better in terms of casting. In terms of sets, while the main sets are fabulous... There are a lot of backgrounds that look too gimmicky to me (as compared to other films by the same director, like Bajirao Mastani) Also, in terms of the storyline, I thought it was just one scene after another, a patchwork (one event after another) and not necessarily a tale (with a beginning, main plot and conclusion) However, kudos to the script and conceptualization. Perhaps I had way more expectations.
I couldn’t understand why gangubai wanted to get prostitution legalised, when she could ask for a better life for all women of the area from the PM? Why did she want other young girls to go through what she went through? Why not put an end to it, rather than being called the mother of all prostitutes?
There's only one thing that I disagree with is that a Vidya Balan or Huma would have been better casting as the film shows a sixteen year old ganga at the start who is very naive and childish and I cannot imagine Vidya playing a 16 year old in any case even Richa would not look like a 16
@@saniyakhan3110 First learn the spellings of her name it's Alia Bhatt and secondly we don't really need to bring one person down to praise the other Amna praising Alia doesn't really take away from the exceptional performances of Deepika
@@saniyakhan3110 PC might have made a lot of sense! Also, on your second point- 1) I don't think you need to learn the correct spelling of an actress for your opinion to be valid. 2) I have two minds on that- first is, of course, the acting prowess of an actress. In this regard I think we definitely would agree that Alia Bhatt has worked hard on her craft. As for her being a viable option for the title bestowed, I think it would be correct (primarily because of the diversity in her projects and pretty decent acting in all of them (significantly good in some)). What the larger debate (?) should be, however, on is whether people without backing actually get projects for a long enough time period for them to expand on their skills and hone their craft. PS: I think Deepika Padukone is older than a decade in the industry.
