What I love about you Emily is that you only use 1 pump of foundation and a few dots of concealer which is what I use…your finished look always looks flawless and beautiful..thank you for showing that less can be more for those of us who abide by this motto ❤️

I agree. Emily also gently taps her eyeshadow brush in the eyeshadow, and she does the same for blush. She rolls in the brush so lightly. You see people sometimes stabbing products.

I'm also a bridal makeup artist, and I do a similar process on wedding day clients. I actually always start with eyes first and then do the face. Depending on what kind of look they want, I typically do a lot of light layers of products to reinforce the makeup. I do adjust the amount of concealer and how I apply it depending on the individual. Not every undereye can tolerate lots of concealer there!

I always start with my eyes first. That way, any fallout doesn’t affect what’s done to my face because it’s easy to take a q-tip and a dot of lotion to take care of it.

Robert Walsh did a video on this as well, a few months back. He mentioned that several layers of light layers ( he was reacting to TikTok videos about this subject) makes for far more natural looking and longer staying makeup!

When you wear a lot lot of foundation, other people can see it. I don’t like for people to look at my face and see “foundation “ as opposed to my skin just looking a little better. I know women who layer lots of foundation and when I’m talking with them, that’s a lot of what draws my attention.

Hi Emily it’s not for me😂. I have extremely dry rosacea and eczema prone skin and I’m 52. I look far better in a lighter layer of makeup and blended really well so it doesn’t move around and settle into wrinkles. The reason you saw the lines in the forehead is that excess product settling into them. I do use a very light second layer in areas that need a bit extra coverage, but it’s only a small amount again well blended. Too much makeup looks heavy on my skin and especially anywhere near the eyes😢. I personally would rather have it fade and look natural than look dry/cakey/heavy. I really think it depends on what you use re staying power and a thin layer (or two thin layers) of a longer wear product can wear really well on the skin without needing a huge amount of product to do so. I always have product on my face at the end of the day and noticeable product on my cloth when I remove it. How you prep your skin makes a massive difference as well re longevity. I survived perimenopause wearing makeup so I had to figure out what lasted and what didn’t 😂. Best wishes x

Yes!!! I’ve been there, and I can’t stop looking at it and thinking how unfortunate it is. And it only reminds me I need to be careful with my makeup. (I don’t wear foundation but everything else and blending of concealer, bronzer etc can still be bad.) The last thing you want is people distracted by your foundation or makeup.

Cats that you get from outside are the best!! My old man Simba was feral at my aunt's old house and through a lot of patience and dedication with him we were able to have him be an indoor/outdoor cat and then a fully indoor cat. When my fiance and I got our apartment my aunt let us take him and he's just the snuggliest boy; he's 25 (I swear!!!) and we say he's using all of his 9 lives to get as much love and attention as possible to make up for all the years he was outside before we were able to take him in 💜

Yeah, I agree that women don’t wear enough makeup. I think it’s because we all had that Mom or Aunt who would make those “clown” remarks and that stuck with us more than we realize! I have managed to overcome it! I get up at 4:00 every morning to get ready for work and when I do my makeup, it needs to last well all day long so that I don’t have to reapply except for lipstick. I have many thin layers and they are all seem-lessly blended to filth so that you don’t see where one product begins and one ends. You first have to decide if your face can take a lot of makeup and mine can. I did my daughter-in-law’s makeup when she married my son, at her request of course, and she and I had several discussions about her face, skin type and preferences for her wedding makeup look. I also explained to her that I would be putting on more makeup than she’s probably ever had on, but that’s what is needed for the photographs and longevity of that face lasting thru the photography session before the wedding, the wedding itself, the reception and their departure. Her makeup was flawless and it photographed BEAUTIFULLY and her makeup lasted the entire day. Even her photographer asked her who did her makeup and she said her mother-in-law and she asked if I were a professional MUA and she told her no. Photographer told her that I might consider being a wedding MUA because she’s seen other brides who’d had their’s done by professional makeup artists and it wasn’t as good as what I had done. If you want your makeup to last, you need to use cream products and set them with powder products. Cream blush will be set with a powder blush and a cream bronzer would be set with a powder bronzer and so on, and apply more than you think you should use and and then use a translucent powder to calm it down. When I tell you that my makeup looks exactly the same when I get home in the evenings at 6 pm as it did when I applied it at 4 am, it absolutely does. It takes time and effort though. You can’t throw on a 10 minute makeup job and expect it to last all day. It doesn’t work like that.

So kind of you to take her in and give her a home❤ I've always had cats my entire life (I'm 57) and in my experience they can take quite a while to get used to each other when a new kitty arrives. Cats are extremely Territorial and they tend to do better with this process if each of them has their own little territory to retreat to, like a cat bed or a box with a cozy blanket in it...Also Jackson Galaxy has a lot of helpful videos on helping cats to get along better with both other cats and people. Even though I have had cats my entire life I have learned a lot of very helpful information from his channel😊

Emily, coming from someone who adopted 3 cats without meaning to (all 3 found us), this video made me tear up. We got back from our wedding/honeymoon in May (definitely blamed myself, and thought what if we didn’t go on our honeymoon, etc) and lost our first baby the day after and are down to 2. ❤❤❤ Thank you for your (and your family’s) kind heart.

Not makeup related, but I find with the weather transitions between fall and winter I am SO tired and unmotivated a lot of the time. This part of the year I occasionally cheat at night with my skincare by just giving myself a little scrub with a warm wet washcloth and then massaging in about 4 drops of Moringa oil scented with an essential oil of your choice (mine’s Neroli) all over my face, eyes and neck. It feels so moisturizing on my drying skin and keeps my skin barrier in check. This was a suggestion from my holistic doctor. Thought it was worth a share.😊

Hi Em! Im not a professional but if I need my makeup to last, this routine closely mimics what I do. I am not a concealer girl. I have never found one that works (and Ive tried so many). But I will also use a double dose of setting spray. I will get my base done, set, then eyes (not mascara), brows, and set again. I live in Florida and this gets me through Disney in the summer (along with a matte foundation). Long time viewer! Love you!

Love this video idea! What works really well for me is using just a tiny bit of the Tirtir cushion foundation not only as foundation but also under the eyes as concealer. It's so easy and you hardly have to use any since it's so full coverage. And something about cushion foundations make your skin look so perfected!

You look lovely whether fully glam or zero makeup Emily. I do a similar situation on days I know I have a 12 hour shift (or more sometimes) in front of me (CNA). I also bring a powder puff with no product and that helps to press out some of those areas that makeup might start to collect in through the day. Have a great weekend everyone.

I do my foundation this way. Usually 2 pumps for full coverage. And my concealer too. I like my skin to look flawless. But most days, I don't do full eye makeup. Just mascara. And usually bronzer, no blush. Like you say, it's just makeup and if you don't like it, you can do something different 😊. That's why I love makeup. I can change things up at any time. Love watching your tutorials. And yay for another kitty...we have 4 ourselves. 😊

One thing that stood out to me immediately after all the makeup was on was when you smile big, you've got very obvious lines under your eyes that aren't usually apparent. I'm your mom's age, so I don't dare apply that much foundation and concealer! 🙈

At 60, I find my skin looks better the less foundation I use. Any time I try a new foundation, I notice that I tend to start off with too much product and I usually hate it. Then I remember that, and gradually reduce the amount I’m using until I hit the sweet spot for me. 1 pump is usually more than enough-I can’t imagine using 2.5. Thanks for trying this out for us.

I was suprised that you don't do your cream products first already and as a more mature person, I woulsn't put that much powder around my eyes. I think it makes sense to apply cream products first. However, if you don’t need that much concealer and powder under the eyes, don’t do it. I suppose if you use that much concealer you’re going to need that much powder. You can make anything work though, Emily,since you have great skin. I would look like a dried up prune if I did that much of the creams & powder. Thanks for showing us this technique but it’s a pass for me!❤

This is a beautiful makeup look! I personally also would not wear that much makeup unless I was going to a special event but I swear it took like 10 years off of your age, I think it was the concealer use, so I'm definitely going to try it lol! That new cat is so cute thank you for saving a stray cat especially with all the storms. You can try the feliway products that are plugins. Those really have helped us with our adopted cats.

I can see why this would be great for a bride. It ended up looking really natural without too much shine throughout the day. A bride would not have to do touch-ups except for lips on her special day. I definitely would not do this every day. I am more of a light to medium coverage girl, but there is a benefit to this for special occasions.

Happy Saturday, Emily & everyone! I'm 61 and normal to dry, leaning more dry these days. I find that less is more for me. My holy grail long-wearing foundation is the Hourglass Ambient Soft Glow in shade 3. I only use a half-pump and apply with the BK Beauty 106 brush using Lisa J's technique. I use Kosas Cloud Set in Breezy to set, and it lasts all day. I appreciate that you bring us other options, but I don't think I would try this one. But it might work well for others, and that's cool!

I was surprised how good it still looked at the end of the day, I think about my oily skin and I feel like that amount of makeup would slide right off my face. But I guess that’s what all the powder was for. I don’t know if it’s the haircut or this makeup or a combo of the 2 but I think you look very youthful in this video. This was really interesting! As a person who uses my base products with a more minimal approach, some of these steps were causing anxiety 😂 I find that my face just really can’t handle a lot of product as I’ve gotten older (I’m 30), but when I was a teenager I had more of a “more is more” approach. These days if I wore that much makeup you’d be able to see every smile line and forehead line I have. Definitely fun to try new techniques and step out of your comfort zone!

I never think that you use lots of makeup Emily. I don't feel makeup is a one size fit all and some people don't need as much as other people. I do layer my bronzer and blush with cream then powder and find that it stays present for a full day at work. And yes, I do appreciate you bringing the TicToc stuff to us. I bought the brushes you reviewed and they are pretty great. I wouldn't have known about them otherwise.

I feel like this style of makeup makes more sense for special events like wedding makeup. I'm sure it looks great in photography but real life would be a different story. I think I'll stick with the "less is more" approach for everyday!

On the Wayne Goss video where he puts foundation in his palm and loads up his brush, he uses one pump for each side of the face. He does one side and then reloads the brush to do the other side. I've done it and it's a beautiful finish.

I’ve always had the philosophy that less is more. When I have an event and apply more than I’m used to I usually end up hating what I did 😂 it looks bad so much quicker on my skin.

Every time you use that setting spray, I remember this episode of American Ninja Warrior where a lady did all the stunts and fell in the water, she should've been a mess. Afterwards the host asked why her makeup still looked so good, and she said she used a bunch of hairspray on her face 😂

Hairspray was used to seal makeup, before setting sprays were a thing. A particular favourite in the drag community and theatre.

It’s funny because yes this feels like a lot of makeup by today’s standards but it’s STILL LESS than we wore back in 2016! 😂 most people were packing on the full coverage foundation and then doing the full triangle under each eye of concealer. & tbh it looked really good! The brows , highlighter beaming, and ultra dry matte lips looked the worst! lol

I love the Revlon flexwear concealer, I've been using it more than my others, and I've had it for a year now because I just use a tiny dot. It's just so thick and creamy that it won't look the best if a whole lot is used. When you mentioned the mua used colourpop, it's another top concealer for me and I can see that one working really well if used in this way because it's not as thick.

i wear Physician’s Formula Butter Believe it foundation and i use two pumps and it looks full coverage AND natural. it doesn’t feel heavy or cakey. its best to pump on finger and dispersing on face. i use about the same amount of concealer and haven’t had any creasing!! what may work for me (oily skin), may not work for you. keep doing your routine because someone else says to use more. i actually use less of the serum foundation for more a subtle look. still very beautiful though!!

The amount of make-up needed is very subjective. Not everyone needs more make-up because most of us are wearing make-up just for ourselves day to day, not necessarily to events or to shoot content where the make-up needs to show up on camera. I think there is a huge difference between wearing make-up for day to day vs putting make-up on a client for an event or photoshoot vs applying enough make-up for social media content. When it’s for day to day you’re just wearing products to emphasize your lovely features and don’t need much make-up because we’re not trying to make it show up on camera, just enough to see an difference when we look in the mirror. I know I’ve applied too much when I can clearly see a lot of make-up on my skin in the mirror. All this 2+ pumps of foundation and many many layers of colour products feel more like a “for camera/social media content” kind of approach like you want enough to show up on camera. When I take photos, I look like I don’t have enough make-up on in the photo. But in person I can see there’s a lot of product when I look in the mirror.

I actually thought it started to look better as the day went on, maybe bc some of it was fading? Would love to watch a video where to blend her method with yours and set with L’Oréal and still give check ins! 🙏🏼

Gotta say Em, your nose is snatched in this makeup. I agree that you look amazing with your usual makeup however I love that you inspire us to try new methods. I think the secret is to take what you want from each person you like their look. I don’t do everything that anybody else does. I do more than some and less than others. I’m on vacation right now and in Italy today for a few days and going shopping tomorrow. I didn’t know Essence was made in Italy but I bought some in Germany and it said it’s made in Italy.

I have a lot of red in my skin and am oilier/acne prone. I always use more than one pump. Around two probably, but I use a sponge. I don’t do foundation under my eyes, only concealer so that it’s less layers. I use hourglass powder under my eyes because it’s very thin and creases less. I do fit me generally and I do use a lot else wear. And of course setting spray. I do find that wearing more like that on my skin is longer lasting. My oils will eat thru a thin layer and look like nothing is there in no time🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s a lot of foundation! Especially applied all at once. Maybe if done in layers and if you’re covering your neck and chest. At least for my mature skin. The more foundation and concealer I apply the more my wrinkles show up! lol

I use more Foundation and Concealer as you normally would but the only time I can honestly say I e used every bit of two and a half pumps is with my Nars Radiant , because those truly are tiny tiny bit of product that comes out with each pump also I would not say that the CP Concealer has the coverage level of the Revolution. I own both those Concealers and the Revlon has a lot more coverage and less hydration, I find Revlon on the dry side and I find CP has much more dewy hydrated feeling I’m 48 and that amount of a drying Concealer without using a Setting Spray right after the Base before moving on to any other step my face would literally crack at the first movement LOL . I use a lot setting spray throughout my routine I’m normal and in Fall and Winter I can lean dry , so I really can take the extra setting spray and it leaves all my products melted together with just a Satin finish i don’t enjoy a dewy tacky face all day . I don’t want my very long hair or my Fur Babies hair stuck to my face I personally don’t enjoy that sticky tacky feeling all day long , you can have a nice illuminating finish that dries down but looks fresh and dewy without actually being tacky to the touch that’s my preference, I also do use powder Bronzer and Blush over my creams/liquids and then do the exact same setting as your normal routine. I just love the Sephora Baked Multi Tasking Powder it has such a gorgeous Finish with just a bit of coverage, my makeup wears like Iron for me but I’m also not putting it through a workout either but it’s always lasted great for me when I needed it to . I guess I do a bit of what you both do , I use more Foundation and Concealer than your normal but not as much as Shelby and yes I’ve seen a few of her videos and yes her makeup does look absolutely stunning but she also has great lighting and TikTok also has an automatic filter , so in all honesty we don’t see what the makeup looks like IRL she doesn’t get right up in the camera or do check ins in real life on your phone with natural light and no filters. I’m not saying Shelby uses filters on-top of the automatic one that TikTok adds but we also don’t get to see her makeup after a few hrs of wear or in ordinary natural light so I’m not convinced of it looking great after ever just a few hrs . I’m not trying to be rude or ignorant the Girl is Stunning I just personally have seen her do check ins or use natural lighting.
