I knew coming in it was going to be a fight, I had no idea how bad the fight would be with my own people(green). People run from common sense solutions, and that's what fuels it. If people are willing to deal with the stress and incompetence of working in a prison in exchange for the money, do it. But don't label someone else negative for sharing their honest experience of the place. Stop acting like you don't know what you're contemplating signing up for, if one man can make you waver, I wouldn't want you as a partner, you're already fragile and you haven't even started.
Pinned to the TOP 📍and this comment is somebody who I worked with for YEARS at the same prison and is as solid as they come. Whole truth and nothing but the truth.
@@JoseGomez-ol7jj My goal was to make you aware, not deter you. If you find it is right for your situation, then by all means proceed. If nothing else, hopefully what I said can help you to make a more informed decision. Don’t step into this career thinking it’s as simple as those dudes in green are with you and the ones in blue are against you. Trust your own intuition, because that’s the only thing you can trust at the end of the day.
@thatprisonguard you speak pure facts! I worked with kids, Male Adults, and Women. The Female inmate population is the worst! The state has them feeling so entitled like they should have everything. Every institution is run how they want to run it I’ve learned. Your coworkers and staff can do some corrupt dumb shit, but ISU always catches them. I’ve seen a lot. Witnessed ISU walk staff off, so embarrassing. I’ve been to RJD to take an exam test to get on list for promotion that prison is right by the mexico border and cool ocean views from the freeway. I was surprised they had inmates on carts in the parking lot, then inmates cleaning all the front area unsupervised. 😮 I couldn’t find a phone to call what office I needed to go to… lol The golf cart had highlighter vests inmates with staff though. One of my coworkers worked at RJD, he said Suge Knight is locked up there, that Nick Cannon always visited him and that staff always catered towards Suge Knight.
You are correct LT. One thing I hear from people since I've retired is how refreshed I look, no dark circles under my eyes or puffy eyes, they say I'm more pleasant to be around. They are all correct, a job in corrections saps your energy, the stress takes a toll on your mental health and body. Most of us who've witnessed a lot of blood and violence have PTSD, and dealing with back stabbing and incompetent managers and administrators causes you to be in a constant state of distrust and being cynical of most people you deal with at work
Buenos días Héctor!!! Hell no you shouldn’t be a CO right now!! It’s dangerous and higher ups don’t have your back and no consequences anymore for inmates. Just saying. Have a fabulous day!🩷🙌🏽
Ive been working at Salinas Valley for 3 years now, and I’m starting to hate it now. I’m starting to see what you’re saying about the bullshit, and how the job is drastically changing for the worse.
Cdcr is constantly changing and if you can’t adapt to change it will eat u up alive and spit you out. The changes I have seen in my career are things I never imagined I would have seen in a prison. You have to have a real conversation with yourself and realize why you joined cdcr. If it’s for pay, retirement and medical than you have to suck it and deal with the change. Do your job and nothing more cause the light at the end of tunnel will be worth it. Retiring at 50 for me will be a heaven sent. If you joined cdcr thinking your a going to make a difference in the world than you are in the wrong job. I know Lt feral speaks bad about HQ staff but believe me they don’t even have a lot of say in what cdcr is going through. The real people responsible are the politicians including the governor. The HQ staff are just complying with orders given to them from the laws that the governor and politicians put in place. I definitely say don’t get stagnant and if you don’t have your 60 units get them and go the couselor route or parole agent route, by doing that it will give you a new out look on your career.
I never had a CO tell me that they didn’t care enough to assist an officer during an assault or incident, but I have definitely met some officers that really don’t give a care about inmates breaking the rules. I have met very few officers that were cowards and genuinely afraid of inmates. One CO I knew would only work control booths even for over time. Many CO were more afraid of getting in trouble with the administration so they would only do the bare minimum duties to avoid having to write reports.
I always wondered how Co's could be basically in prison because they're there almost as much as the inmates except they go home to sleep and i would wonder if they would eventually get messed up in the head because it happens to inmates. Its hard to be in a hateful, conniving, dirty environment and not be affected. I always read the comments in your videos to get an idea of what co's go through
@thatprisonguard I seen how the caliber or I should say character of CO's changed let's say from 1984 when I got my C# to 2008 when was the last time I paroled the way the officers operated was totally different. I always joke and say when they put all the CO's in jumpsuits that's when it REALLY changed prior to that officers wore like these green slacks like in the Army were like my class A's and only Squad (capitol S because them boys were not to be messed with) and kitchen officers wore jumpsuits. Back in them days inmates still had personal clothes. I used to wear pendleton, hushpuppy shoes with 501s lol to visit in DVI. Totally different time in CDC and the "Convicts" I met in the 80s were way more smooth than the "inmates" that I left the day I never went back.
We are just going to called you LT. Neta for now on. The brutal truth that these kids don't read on the recruitment pamphlet. So glad you are putting out the truth. I hope the place and the job gets fixed someday because it's a great place and job to do. So glad I'm out though. My wrinkles haven't vanished, and my hair is still gray but I'm glad that rash is gone! Now I just worry about the rash I got from eating Chinese food from El Club Hong Kong. Might you still have some of that blue salve?
Love the channel.I’m a COII in Missouri level 3 camp . Don’t want to say too much and get in trouble . But ya we are understaffed under trained and going to woke. We are very green ..like we are at 40% staffing and most under 2 years . I worry daily about my people my staff I worry for they’re safety.
Co's forget about their family in exchange for the money. If you want to miss holidays ,birthdays and weekends for the rest of your 30 years ,go ahead and be a CO
I had the privilege of taking care of a retired Sargents mom when I was still working in the Emergency Department at the time but already put my 2 weeks in. Dude told me I was a good nurse and I accepted his compliment and told him I was going to prison. He told me he did 25 years and just retired. Mf looked amazing at 51 and told me he aged backwards 5 years once he left. His skin looked like a 20 year olds, i shit you not. I'm working as a correctional travel nurse and it is so much more chill then being a CO or working in the Emergency Department.
HEY LT SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE SOLID ONES THE KNUCKLE DRAGGERS THE ONES THAT CHECK ALL THE BOXES THE ONES THAT PUT IN WORK WHEN IT WAS NEEDED THE ONES THAT RESPONED TO ALARMS THE ONES THAT PUT THE BULIDING DOWN AND RESPONDED TO THE YARD CUZ IT KICKED OFF BACK IN THE DAY AND GOT IN TROUBLE FOR LEAVING UR POST
I knew I was signing up to work in a place that would put me in contact with violence, negativity etc... what I could not have forseen was mangers and the state actively undermining staff, an I.G.office who actively hunts for staff firing. If I knew then what I know now, there is no chance I would work here, especially now 3.0 at 50 is gone.
Good Morning LT could you drop a video on CDC officer's by race? When you see California prison documentaries it's always a Hispanic or Caucasian officer interviewed. I wonder if prison gangs recruit men to serve as C.O's and are in cahoots with some prison gangs. I SEND MY RESPECTS IN FULL SIR.
Bro thanks for your input and all the knowledge you’re giving your community. I was thinking of applying but never mind I’ll just stay as a truck driver😂.
LT is out here trying to warn people and spread knowledge and people are still questioning him…I don’t buy it, I’m thinking a lot of these😅😅😅 naysayers are from home office in Sacramento trying to cover for themselves. As for those considering a career in corrections, listen to LT and also the ex-offender RU-vid channels out there. This is one of the few career paths were coming home safe and unharmed is not guaranteed. There are also the psychological effects from dealing with all of the negativity and hostility and I’m not talking about the inmates lol.
If you want to make good money,Yes! But all money ain’t good money! Some people have an easy career! But some don’t! I did 25 years opened Salinas Valley level 4 and was assaulted 11 months into the job! My partner got knocked out at my feet and I almost was thrown over the tier! Broken nose, 3 rubber rounds to the back of my head! I got over that but down the road it was the stress and the politics from my own that was the worst! Retired with a gravy job in 2020 but it was time to go! 90% routine 10% action! You can’t Call a career in CDC because there’s so many variables! It’s like the Matrix! Each prison is different! It’s crazy with all the cameras now and arm chair warriors running the joints!
Hi Hector, my brother wanted me to ask you for the galt academy is that where you take the physical test? Also during the academy do you have to pass more written test in order to graduate from the academy?...
There might be a physical test while at the academy in Galt. Also, there absolutely is written tests that you have to pass. Including the P.O.S.T. exam
I know your experience is in CDCR, but are these types of things similar in other prisons across the country? I’m a teacher and have vindictive management around me, but it won’t get me killed I’ve often thought about going into Juvenile detention but after watching you I’m not sure? Thanks Hector I’ve learned a ton watching you and just enjoy your commentary on different things, hell you should be a reporter need your own show on Fox News or something!
I seen administration frustrate all the advocates to the point of agency transfer. Has traumatized fields of new hires who in 6 months would have 30 mandated overtime shifts dealing with situations which zet them up for failure. I would feel bad when they would put their two week notice in but still accept mandatory overtime after the more senior staff myself included would refuse the mandate and they would take their last two weeks with 3 or 4 mandates in 5 days.
9.5 years in a California County Jail. Some of the people were awesome, others completely brainless. Hard, dangerous, thankless job that towards the end of my career started becoming all about numbers and micromanaging. Thanks for the awesome content LT!
People need to be aware of the expectations you agreed to when you joined. However, circumstances have changed over the years with departments heading in different directions. If this new direction does not align with your goals, I recommend considering the option to resign, similar to what Lieutenant Bravo did. Many individuals are hesitant to leave because they fear there is no life outside of CDCR. In reality, there is more to life, as CDCR can either build you up or tear you down. Some individuals have been driven to the point of suicide due to the extreme stress of this career. On the other hand, there are partners who are extremely lazy and apathetic, showing minimal effort. I believe the department's approach to handling things is a bit backwards, lacking common sense. The emphasis seems to be on lawsuits and politics rather than practicality. It's unfortunate that officers can't freely perform their duties without second-guessing themselves due to unfounded allegations and unnecessary investigations.

Hey bro, I started watching you're videos a few months ago when I applied to CDCR and a sheriff's office in A county in CA. I ultimately chose the county as a CO. I'm curious as to what you think about COs in county jail and if you have some insight on it. Just completed the psych evaluation a few weeks ago. Anyway I would greatly appreciate a response, even if you have little to no info on county COs
How long was the entire process for you? I’m currently debating if I should work while applying because I heard the process is long & I still have bills To pay
@xxxbigboidraco The process is long man. It also depends on what county you're applying to. My entire hiring process took about 6 months. The beginning goes by fast but the longest part is the background investigation so it's mostly just waiting for a few weeks.
Being a Correctional Officer is a hard job. It's an adventure! Lt. Hector Bravo podcast 👏 is shooting 🔫 from the hip 💥 with truth. Listening to Hector is like having a good cup of coffee ☕️ 🏜 after 28 years and retiring 🫡 /🇺🇲. Tons of Respect to Lt. Hector Bravo! 🪖🪂 Go, Army!
Father in law High Desert retired 23 yrs, my mom CCC retired 22 yrs. Aunt a CO, uncle was CO, other uncle CO. Even my grandma worked for the prison back in the day.
When I was growing up, my mom owned a tavern near the university in Louisville Kentucky. It was a cop and correctional officer hang out. Things have changed a bit.
I’m on the line and it really does feel like that exactly going in trying to be safe and protect my paycheck it’s like you have to watch out for inmates and bars supervisors lmao
Took the test, score an 85 but i haven't heard from them. Its been at least a month since I've heard back. All i hear us that rhey need people and look to hire 2400 staff but the process moves at a 🐌 pace
That’s crazy, I applied on thanksgiving, my exam was exactly 1 week later (passed), 3 or 4 days later I did the live scan, now they are doing the background check. You should have received an email after you passed the exam (if you did the exam online). Good luck.
I don't think RJD is getting shut down. It is in a vital location (San Diego). There are a lot of local hospitals in the area which is beneficial for inmate medical treatment.
Ive done everything you could do in the real world and you deal with billshit everywhere you go. If your not a happy person then you'll never be happy anywhere. Might as well get paid for it.

Hey I finished taking my medical exam today. It took me about a year to get assigned a background investigator. Applied April 2023 finishing the process july 2024
my dad worked from 10 or 11 to 7 as an for 35 years as a officer started out as cert then went to being an LT his last couple years he didnt wanna be a captain until the year 30 mark but he always said the captain position came with way to many problems . i remember he came back home and left work at work he was an officer at oregon state pen then mill creek in Oregon. he coached us all of our lives in sports and somehow went to work 3 or 4 times a week.
@thatprisonguard LT. My apologies are you able to see if I need to resubscribe to the Patreon? Again my apologies as I lost all my settings. LOL respectfully
There’s things they dont tell you about being a CO. The process is a year long, the academy can be rough, depending on institution you dont get to pick your shifts. Lowest seniority probably gets put on grave yard overnight shifts. When mandating on call offs or institutional needs lowest on seniority gets ordered to stay once you’re about to leave they send you back for long hours. Sometimes it aint the inmates that give you problems it’s the staff. Some inmates are very hard workers they dont want no problems just program and make their chump change to buy Canteen on survival mode. In the end inmates always try to get over super manipulative. CYA you’re a.. The money is mostly in overtime, takes the right person to work inside. I never understand why young pretty girls wanna be a CO they come to work all dolled up, nails, make up, etc. 🤷🏽♂️
Ok, thank you for your reply. Hey next month is going to be a year for me in iroonwood and dude money is not enough cus they take big chuck so I am seriously thinking of removing the union fee and get that extra money what you think about that? Spending too much on gas I'm from calexico and driving everyday
What career suggestions would you guys recommend if one wanted to leave the department that would be the same or better financially and schedule wise. Only work 3days 4off
Well if you’re looking for “equivalent pay” that’s gonna be a tough, because the department pays well in comparison. If you wanted to transition to the corporate world I recommend going through LinkedIn and Indeed to research jobs and what the qualifications are.
I was in some bad relationships, and when I started working at a prison as a contractor, I felt safe there. All the people in uniform helped me to feel safe. I couldn't wait to get to the prison ! I felt more safe there than in my own home. Once I started dealing with the visitors, I forgot about my own fears and helped to give hope to them. I use to have a biased against law enforcement ,, but when shit hits the ceiling, WHO do we call ???? I learned to have respect for the c.o's and they put themselves at risk every single day : They keep society safe and protect prisoners from other prisoners as well .
I appreciate this comment so much, brother. Thank you. I'm passionate about helping others and doing the right thing. I credit that to my leaders in the Army.
6 years army 6 years 1985 Texas department of corrections 25 years federal prison I fauken loved it, pumping dat iron kept me in my lane the brotherhood yes it was ugly things happened fighting, assaults, stabbings, riots, but it’s part of the show I’m retired now great benefits I’m a biker now..and still pumping dat iron
Do you need experience to work in a prison sir? I’m currently working out n doing cardio weekly because I’m trying to be fit enough for the physical test you have to pass. Just wondering if I need exp to be accepted into a prison
