As you stated, they both have their place. If your desk is "super-custom" you probably already have the "waste troll net" in you lap covered, and the can uses either base type. I still tie some snelled hooks, on occasion, and much prefer the clamp for crank-ability. All my flies are tied on pedestal bases. Renzetti ROCKS! (after a long run with a Regal Standard - terminal tackle tying award winner.) The next post is accurate, if you can buy a second post separate, and cut to YOUR correct length for your situation

Crank-ability! Huge feature overlooked by most in my opinion. I've honestly never thought about cutting the post. Sounds scary. But now you have me thinking!

Question: For the c clamp Renzetti master, did you have to get a 3” extension to use the clamp? I have the pedestal version but don’t have the c clamp. Not sure if I would need to purchase the 3” or “6 extension to go with the c clamp

I actually have the lap extension so it is a little different than the standard C-Clamp. If you went with the longer vise shaft extension you could then attach a garage bag underneath the clamp

A person should buy neither a clamp, nor a pedestal vice, but a vice that has a removable stem that slides in and out of a clamp, and can also be inserted into a base.

I'm actually not very familiar with any vises that can't do that. But, when you buy a pedestal or C-Clamp vise, the stem is usually different lengths. The pedestal stem is generally shorter, which can sometimes just be put in a C-Clamp. The stem on the C-Clamp vise though, being longer, usually doesn't work in the pedestal because the vise height is then too high.
