@@HighPeakAutos I have to agree with David. I watched this video as I was considering getting a ute - I used to have a family that relied on a passenger car, and now they are older and no longer reliant, so I wanted a ute to move things to and from my house. I got the Steed in AU. Feels like Im driving a Ute. Handles just like a Ute. Because it's a Ute. And I saved like 20 grand compared to other brands that had comparable extras. Im in no hurry to complain - and plus, I have a shiny new car :)

Yep. He takes it to a new level doesn't he. Great Wall is one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the world and he didn't know that? They produced and sold over 1 million vehicles worldwide in 2016. Lastly, if a vehicle doesn't appear to fit into his narrow functional requirements, he bags it. One of the worst reviews I have seen in some time. 🤔
@paulparoma

@@53glowe Give the guy a break. Great Wall is a big player in China and Asia, but it's still largely unknown in Europe and the US. It does not matter how many units a manufacturer has sold if those units have not made it your way: You won't know it exists.

GWM has been an established brand here in South Africa. The Steed is based on the Isuzu Rodeo you mentioned The 3rd, 4th and 5th generation Isuzu Dmax pickups were all used as the base for various Chinese brands such as Foton, JMC etc. The GWM Hover or H5 SUV is an old Isuzu Axiom from 2001-2002. GWM have sold a number of pick up trucks or bakkies as they known here in SA but are still a minor player, compared to Hilux and Ranger sales. In SA its also a value purchase and they are very popular with construction and agricultural businesses.

I have worked most of my life in construction plant sales and forestry, I would be totally lost without a double cab pick up truck, it gives me a balanced combination of decent on road drive, good off road drive, load carrying space, 3500kg towing capacity and room for 4-5 people on a short journey, OK fuel consumption is normally just under 30mpg irrespective of what the manufacturers claim, presently I have a Ford Ranger double cab 2.2L 6-speed Auto Limited spec, had several Nissan Navaras before but this is probably the best pick up truck I've had, wonderful chassis when pushed hard - yes I can drive a 4x4 quite fast and not crash. The Great Wall pick up, well its OK for a lifestyle truck but its too flimsy to last in my world.
@DiscoFang

So you have a Ranger and have had several Navaras. You don't say you've owned, driven or even touched a Great Wall. How do you conclude they're flimsy?

This truck is basic but comfortable and I agree 100% with your comments / great review- such a massive Shame they pulled out of the. Uk - but who could blame them - euro 6 - Australia and South Africa selling thousands and the home market- maybe one day they will come back with their first all electric pick up - unbelievable vehicles
@XLR8bg
@XLR8bg 3 года назад
Oh wow, didn't expect anyone to know these, have barely seen any of them and they started in the euro market from a factory in my home country (Bulgaria). In 2012, Great Wall Motors went into partnership with Litex Motors to produce these cars for the European market, started with 2k cars a year and went all the way up to 5k a year in 2017... and then Litex motors bankrupted xD. Great Wall cars were supposed to be a big hit in eastern Europe due to the quite low manufacturing cost, the only rival at their price point was Dacia. Keep in mind that the average age of cars on the road in eastern Europe is like 15 years, less than 3-5 year old cars are about as rare as supercars in UK... You see some in big cities, but that's about it. However, initial reviews of Great Wall cars were quite bad. I remember an early Bulgarian review saying you should also buy a gas mask with your Steed, as some exhaust fumes somehow get into the cabin xD. Also, we were baffled why they started with the Steed (a pickup) and marketed it heavily. Pickups are super rare in eastern Europe - predominantly narrow streets and not enough parking spaces, so it can be a tight fit. Plus, economy is important here as fuel ain't cheap (compared to our incomes). For example, minimum salary in Bulgaria is 325 Euro, average is about 500-900 depending on whether you live in a big or small city, while 1L of petrol costs about 1.1 Euro. Even if you can afford it and need a lot of space, judging by what I see on the streets, apparently 99.9% of people prefer to get a ~10 year old crossover or SUV instead of a new Great Wall steed... or any other pickup. I travel to rural places in the mountains for holidays and pickups aren't popular even there. I think the closest place with plenty of pickups is Crete (the greek island), it's full of Toyota Pickups, but I doubt they'll enjoy Great Wall's reliability record xD. PS Great Wall also makes buses, we have quite a few of them in our public transport fleets.

My daily driver is a 2012 Ram 1500, 4.7 V8, standard cab, 8 foot bed. It is a stripped down vehicle which I use for my business. I love my truck. It’s handsome, comfortable, powerful, surprisingly luxurious, for a vehicle with vinyl on the seats and rubber on the floor, gets about 23 mpg on the highway, and has been more reliable than my ‘07 Honda Fit. My truck is great for the US and Canada. It’s part of the rural culture here, and is designed for our infrastructure and landscape. It would be out of place in the UK or Europe. Having said that, neither should such a vehicle be turned into a luxed-out, suburban family hauler, as they are here in the states. Those trucks can retail for 75,000 dollars, and that’s for a 2wd, 1500, light duty pick up. That is beyond absurd for the average family, unless they own a farm or ranch...but people here buy them like they’re going out of style. I actually had to special order a work truck. The dealership had 50 Rams on their lot at the time, and all of them were the afore-mentioned luxe trucks. I thought it was kind of nuts.

Had a mate drove a Great Wall for two years in Chch, sorry Christchurch NZ. Cheap to buy, run but a bit of a hit on sale - what you would expect. Would have kept longer but found ride on long trips, not as good as the unreliable Hilux he sold it for. Bought a Amarok after that, not the economy he thought (again on the long trips) now like many others bought a Ranger. Fwiw, not particularly brand loyal tho likes the Ranger and would have another, buys what seems best every 2-3 years, his only car, does long trips.

@@guinnessharvey4476 They don't make them, they manufacture under strict controls on every aspect of materials and output by the actual makers (eg Apple). The problem with Chinese makers is cost-cutting in materials wherever they can. This has a profound effect on durability and longevity of the kind that doesn't even enter the head of western consumers. A perfect and just singular example of this is the break down of intake tube and manifold plastics after only 12 months in some Chinese cars. The kind of deterioration and splitting we see after 15-25 years in Japanese or German cars. Pick ups make no sense over here but I love them in the US. They are so versatile. You can throw a snow plough on the front, they have high ground clearance, most are four wheel drive (all helpful as the majority of Americans live a bit off the street down driveways that get muddy and wet in winter), I've thrown everything from a wardrobe to a V8 in the back. We have panel vans (transits and what not), America has pick up trucks.

I have driven pick-ups in Australia and South America and I agree they are pretty crude. However if you want a rugged, reasonably cheap workhorse that can survive being driven on dirt roads for thousands of kms then they are a good bet. More robust than a normal car but much cheaper and simpler than a full on 4WD or SUV. One big downer with the Great Wall is that it doesn't have a very good safety rating which has really stifled sales.

Very Popular here in South Africa ...Diesel way better than the 2.4 petrol which is a old Mitsubishi based engine with bad fuel economy.. The interior is identical to a 2007 Isuzu kb bakkie (s.a for pick up lol) good value for money pick up though .

Fair review of the truck, but saying pick-ups are pointless is really daft. There’s a reason so many are sold, and it’s because the majority who buy them will use them properly: ie, able to take a 1 tonne bag of sand/gravel dropped in the bed with ease, go off-road to site with 5 workers in, have a crane or forklift/telehandler unload you, get everything you need done and get back off site without getting stuck. And they look way better than a van too
@HighPeakAutos

Yeah I see what you mean. Theyre also popular with farmers who need a 4wd workhorse but still, it seems like a niche target audience
@RealWorldCarReviews

High Peak Autos Not really. Pick-ups have been used since the 1950s. Huge market worldwide for them, so it’s not a niche one.

I live in North America and your absolutely right, pick up trucks are stupid. I should know, I owned 3. Finally purchased a Mercedes Metris (Vito). Pick up trucks are used for status for the working class. It has nothing to do with practicality. The phenomenon of the pickup is exactly that, a phenomenon. Vans are quite a bit more to purchase than a truck if you compare apples to apples in North America. But the practicality of a van far outweighs the extra cost in tool storage, organization of materials etc.

Drives ok. Handles fine for a pickup. BUT, the underbody coverage is pants and beyond 6 years it’s likely to fall apart with the rust I see on our one. They have a habit of overheating if you tow with them as well - and it it’s gutless for towing as well. For a few bales on the farm or lightweight stuff then it’ll do as long as you look after it. Heated seats are good it has to be said.
@zack7147

Only a couple of downsides with this 1. Only pulls 2 tonne 2. Belt change every 45k as opposed to most other trucks which are over 100k I work in the on shore drilling game and a 3.5t towing capacity is an absolute necessity. But for their first U.K. Truck it's not a bad shot at it.

Just a quick point on the use of pick ups, they are basically the modern and only option for farmers these days. Defenders are super expencive now and getting older, the new one looks like a disco 4 with a body kit. All other modern 4x4s dont have the rugged basic interiors that arent going to get wrecked, places to chuck bales ect, and towing ability. They are also common for use for work on solar farms, wind farms where required to gp offroad with kit. Just getting kit out the back is a pain and the ride is so poor...

I have to admit I have never heard of these until now. I saw a great example of a Ford Ranger for sale at my trusted dealers for almost exactly the same price. If I had the money I prefer the Escalade.. Even over a Lincoln Navigator. Just need a frigging step ladder to check the oil n water and a good lotto win for the maintenance, fuel & running costs. I happen to like it and the price is not too steep.

Pick ups will either fit with someone or they wont. Because of their unique design they have to be able to jump through quite a few hoops to qualify as a daily driver and so for most wont fit this role very well. Thats why so many have had multiple short term owners. But if you are lucky enough to have the money and space for a second vehicle for hobbies then a pick up can be useful. But also consider that the design is improving all the time and in my view the very latest and best just might make a good alternative for the outdoorsy family over the more traditional SUV you see parked in the national trust car park.

I wonder how far they would get on the Canning Stock Route here in Australia, it's about 1,800 ks long, lots of sand hills, corrugated parts where it shakes your car to pieces, there are around 33 water wells along the track and no help in sight if you breakdown. I'l give it to water well no 2 before turning back before the unthinkable happens. The desert tracks here can make mince meat from poorly manufactured cars / utes / 4x4's and not a nice place to die because of an unreliable car. The Great Wall would be ok on normal roads.

I have often wondered what they were like, they were quite popular here in NZ the land of the Toyata Hilux, hovere I dont see as many as I did, I believe the Ford Ranger is the top selling Ute here. We have an Amarok which I find to be an excellent car, it is used exclusively as a second car, great on fuel drives great, and really handy for dirt bikes, surf boards etc.

POINTLESS 🤔 what about if you work gundogs? Have you ever smelt the back of a shogun that has carried working dogs for a season? Plus you would have had to have been in the same cockpit you can never get rid of it either, not all double cabs are manual the automatic boxes in the ranger, V6nissans and V6 Amerok are silky smooth plus they can all get a wriggle on.LEG ROOM I drive it so no problem 😉 plenty of room for my kids. Most transit Van's cant tow 3.5 ton or go where any of these trucks will plus BIG downside Every pikey in the southern hemisphere is either waving at you oy trying to nick it! Basically horses for courses I've driven double cabs since the early hilux they suit my lifestyle perfectly GREAT review as I would expect and I agree with some of the comments just thought I would make a case for some of us lads that love em 🤙

It would apppear that imports have stopped in 2016, still a few dealers listing used examples. The reason given is post 2016 emmissions and no new diesel engine, I find this odd because the Steed is still sold new in other EU countries with a dual fuel lpg 2.4 petrol engine(125bhp) as well as a diesel.
