I wouldn't trade my KLR for any other bike. It is so simple and enjoyable to work on. It doesn't want to go fast, but gets anywhere fast enough. It's like an old tired dog that still wants to play.

@nickandmotorcycletime5246 Год назад
Agreed! It's a total different experience that grows on you big time. Its such a comfortable bike I find I am enjoying it for longer rides to more places I didn't go before. I currently have both sides of the engine open after dealing with a broken doohickey, so once I get them back on its going to be immortal! haha.

Yes 100%agree. This bike is a BLAST to rip on. It feels like your speeding and then you look down and you're not even at the speed limit. Slow bike riden fast IS FUN. Its cheap, its a great motor that will rev. Its gearing is wide and tall. 16 t is cheap upgrade. And cruises to 72 all day. Get 3 for the price of a BMW..

I clicked on the video because I have the same paint scheme 2006 klr650. I found it in the backyard. I ended up replacing a few things cleaned out the carburetor good to go. I had to take off the clutch side cover just to find the spring with a magnet and still haven’t found the metal from the loop at the top of the doo. Now it’s been sitting as I wait for gaskets in the mail. Can’t wait to get it back together and ride till it’s snows! I’ll upload an update on that soon. I’ve ridden Harley’s and Shadows… they’re a blast. But there’s just something about a gen 1 KLR that cannot be replicated. And to describe them like you did is perfect. They don’t do anything super great, but the will do everything good enough. They’re very comfortable, smooth riding, INSANELY TALL, adventure bikes. I totally agree with you on this. If you want a hard-core dirtbike this isn’t it if you want hard-core street bike this isn’t it but honestly you can pay $20,000 for a KTM or a BMW but what is it gonna do that this won’t really for most writers. For 99.9% of the people out there doing adventure riding in the sense of driving some distance some of it dirt roads But not hard-core off-road, that’s generally what adventure writing is in the kale art is cheap and does it very well. He does everything pretty decent it’s not the best at anything but either is any other adventure bike. Sorry at 1200 cc BMW is not going to rip around like 252 stroke and it’s not going to do roads like a big fluffy seated cruiser. People just like to nitpick things apart and act all big because they can point out flaws in things but the truth is bang for the buck you can’t get a better adventure bike than this. If you want more hard-core off-road get a KLX 300 or an XL 250 or CR 250 now if you’re a big dude and you want a powerful off-road bike get an XL 650 R. It’ll still go on the road but it’s a little better equipped for off-road or get an XR of your choice and in most states you can throw some signals and a couple mods on it and license it to drive on the street but that’s not what the killer is the killers not a Ferrari it’s a pick up truck. The advantage of this over the new are more expensive bikes his the technology is very simple and cheap. With a little basic maintenance on this every now and again they go tens of thousands of miles. Your KTM is going to be needing expensive maintenance all the time and yes it’s a better bike but i’ll take a very simple technology that works well over complicated technology that works a little bit better because I can go out and ride all the time instead of doing maintenance or paying exorbitant prices to have someone else do maintenance every couple thousand miles. You can do a 6000 mile trip on the KL are without maintenance so when you get home you gotta change your oil and maybe check your valves but if it was in good shape when you start a 6000 mile trip is nothing. Most of those other bikes are going to have you stopping after a couple thousand miles to get your maintenance done and keep it tuned and running correctly. These are just easy bikes like this the TW 200 any of those air cooled singles are great bikes because of that they’re cheap to own they go forever and they’re easy. The new Cal are put fuel injection on if people are scared of cleaning the carburetor every now and again but if you keep your carb clean and don’t let it sit for years at a time carbs work fine and I get that they’re intimidating but they’re really not that difficult. I’m not mechanical genius but I watched a couple people rebuild them and rebuilt my own and they were fine. Just don’t over tighten things and make sure everything is clean and you’re good. But who really thinks a carb is something that you’re constantly messing with and fixing. People drive these things tens of thousands of miles without touching their carb and if you let fuel injection sit around for three years it’s going to clog up as well so it’s not a huge advantage. Everybody in the motorcycle industry is hung up on race technology and squeezing every ounce of power and performance out of this stuff and that’s cute and it’s very cool but it’s also very expensive and very unnecessary. You can get the KTM and the BMWs and the Husqvarna‘s out there and a killer will keep up with them just fine 99.9% of the time. It’s got a bad rap but it’s also got a very good rap and a lot of people have it and love it and put tons of miles on these things. Yeah you can spend twice as much and get a tiny extra little bit of performance out of it but 99% of the people who have these bikes will never be able to use the performance it has right now anyway and I get it, those people that want that little extra bit of performance, awesome if you can afford it get it if that’s what you love but The truth is for 99% of people out there the killer is going to be just as good for them and in some ways, especially for new riders and people who aren’t in the racing it’s going to be better in some aspects I think. I encourage people to get what they want if they wanna spend $50,000 tricking out some really expensive bike and then enjoy that then do it and if you want to buy a 1975 Honda XL 350 and drive it all over the world on an off-road come and do it it’ll do it all day long, in fact a lot of the off-road scrambling and low traction stuff it’s gonna do better than a lot of these big bikes but just figure out what you want and don’t listen to all the haters come out the killer is a great bike. I grew up a performance junkie and wanted the best cutting edge everything but as I’ve gotten older I realize that most of that type and makes very little or no difference in reality. There’s a reason they sold these for 40+ years and had to bring it back after they stopped selling them because customers demanded it. They’re just great bikes and I love the new ones I love the old ones the truth is there’s not a whole lot of difference but the new ones have a few cool things on them. The 2014 1/2 or 15 to 18 we’re awesome and had a little better suspension for off Roading then the earlier generations but the truth is if you bought a 1985KLR 600 or a 2023 650 there’s not a ton of difference because at its core it’s just a good simple thumper geared for multi-purpose use, it’s tough and it’s comfortable and that’s kind of what an adventure bike is. Everybody thinks like BMW invented the stuff but you’ve been around forever never always been people that wanted bikes with enough power to get them on the freeway and do some traveling that were comfortable but would still go off road and you can call it Enduro or adventure riding or whatever you want but since they created motorcycles this is what people turn them into and the manufactures have always made these types of bikes and they will always be around because they appeal to the masses most people out there would like these which is why they sell so many and white people keep them for so long. If you’re into technology you want the cutting edge best in this class this won’t do it because it’s not the best in any class it’s just pretty darn good in all the classes and that’s it’s magic, it’s truly multi-purpose you can commute on this thing you can go across country on the freeway and be comfortable and you can take a hard right and drive across that field and up and down those mountains and around that lake and it’ll do just fine. That’s why they’re so popular and that’s why so many people love them. If I could only have one bike this would probably be at it because I don’t do a lot of distance I might go for a smaller dual purpose like a Suzuki DR 350 SE or collect 300 maybe but they’re just not as comfortable and easy on the highway my also it would be a tough call but I’d probably end up with a KLR. And people keep complaining the Kawasaki about the Doohickey but it’s kind of a fad, they fix the part that broke and it’s not super heavy duty but they also don’t break that often, go talk to mechanic said a dealer and not a lot of people bring it in to fix a broken Doohickey people bring it in and wanna upgrade pay them to do the work but It’s really not something that breaks that much it’s just kind of a thing that got really popular and there’s a huge cult following on these so everybody buys them and upgrades their Doohickey but the truth is there are people that put 100,000 miles on these without touching it and they’re just fine and it’s really not that big of a deal and sometime in the last 12 or 15 years they updated it and it really hasn’t been a problem since but people like to fix things that are popular and it’s sort of fun so it’s kept going but I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

We’ll said my friend! I couldn’t agree more, all the points you raised are the same way I think. I’m actually doing the doohickey today, but I agree, I have been scared into thinking I need to do it right away! But like you said millions of miles have been completed on stock klr’s. @newbinhell3043 I ride them in the winter and although they are mechanically well maintained they sustain cosmetic damage over time no matter how often or well I wash them and spray with protectent. so when the doohickey beaks 1 soes it do damage to the engine and 2 what happened to let you know rhat it broke? I just bought a 22 model qith 6 thou miles Mine is like yours, extremely comfortable and it just makes me take back roads and occasionally it says (hey turn around and lets see where that trail goes). The last bike I enjoyed in any way close to this was my trusty Triumph 750 Bonneville at 380 pounds and cheap semi knobbys until it was stolen. No other street bike ever made me want to try it off road or really off the pavement. This is the first bike that gave me that feeling of I think I can go just about anywhere. Im planning on selling 2 of my 3 street bikes and as they say thinning the herd. Im happy for you that you made the discovery about 30 yrs befor I did.

Awesome man! Bonnevilles are sweet bikes too! I wanted to get one to tour across the country. I really don't think anything will happen if the "doo" breaks on your bike. There are millions of bikes with broken "doos" still exploring the world as we speak, but many say its a must. I enjoyed fixing mine and it gave me the "this bike is invincible" feeling, so its up to you. I did notice after I changed mine the bike was much quieter down around the stator cover, less clanky. If I was you and owned a 22 model I wouldn't worry for awhile, until you're bored and still have the bike long term and want to spend some intimate time with it haha. Either way these bikes are true reliable machines. Just keep exploring on your trusty KLR. I had to sell mine last year due to a huge home expense, and I am now searching for another Gen 1 fully modded out for adventures. I didn't realize how much I would miss the bike. And I have 3 bikes, but something about the KLR is so captivating, every ride feels like a special adventure. Hope this helps! Ride safe man!

Crazy, I've been looking at tenere 700s and F800GS adventures and my gen 1 turned up at an irresistable price at a customers house, he was too old to ride anymore and he was like $1800 aussie and it's yours, which was wild, the cheapest other things in the area were $4000 at the time, and he should have sold it for $3200 in this area and its got a nice staintune pipe on it and good saddlebags. Now I can go buy a tenere but...I think I wouldn't be as happy, the KLR is lighter and has personality, I drop it and it doesn't affect my mood at all, drop a tenere and I would probably instantly be concerned about the damage.

I am on the fence about picking up a new one with fuel injection. I know carbs are simple, but I know basically nothing about them. I'm almost definitely over thinking it......
@nickandmotorcycletime5246
@nickandmotorcycletime5246 Год назад
That was the plan with mine, many people have done it before with Gen 1’s. You can run a Gen 1 without a battery at all with a push start, can’t do that with any other gen, which could save you in a pinch. But I get the carb hesitation. I feel like you could learn how to adjust it in a week of online reading and education for sure though. Gen 1’s are so cheap you would have more money to put towards upgrades on the bike and on your trip. But yeah man! I want to do that as well, when I finish my undergraduate degree in 2 more years I’m riding to Alaska from NB.
@gingernaut2550
@gingernaut2550 Год назад
@@nickandmotorcycletime5246 Yeah for sure I know I can learn to adjust and rebuild, I've been watching a ton of videos and reading forums about different pro's and cons. I think IF i go with an older model, it'll be Gen 1. The idea of just not needing to worry about it with EFI sounds awesome, but you're right about the push start being a pretty great shit hits the fan feature! I ultimately want an Africa twin, or a 1250 GS, but I'm thinking I should start with a $3000 klr to get the drops outta the way and flatten out the learning curve off road lol that'll hurt less than putting a $30,000 bike down on a trail! NB to Alaska would be incredible! I'm actually from Southern NS myself. We're planning to move home in 3-4 years, so I wanna get the arctic ocean trip outta the way before we go. Then I'll decide if i wanna go full sized ADV, or get a Harley road king for cruising, and keep the KLR for bush wacking....So many decisions, so little money lmao Hope the Alaska trip is a great and safe one brother!
@nickandmotorcycletime5246
@nickandmotorcycletime5246 Год назад
@@gingernaut2550 yeah, can’t beat a cheap indestructible klr, I paid $2700 for mine and it’s taken everything I can give it and then some. Those Africa twins are wicked, same with the Tenere 700, parallel twins are great. I have three bikes at the moment but want to reduce to one, I’ve just been finding cheap deals and learning how to fix what they need from RU-vid. And a fellow maritimer! When you move back let’s hit the Cabot trail man! Haha. If I was that close to those lands I would definitely ride up north if I were you. I’d keep your eyes out for a cheap klr and get it for like $1500 and fix a couple things and it will live forever. They suck in certain ways but every time I take it on a journey I’m always impressed what it can handle.

@@nickandmotorcycletime5246 Cabot trail would be amazing on a bike! I bought a Yamaha bolt r spec last summer brand new, first bike. LOVE it. But I learned quickly that you're first bike teaches you alot about what you want in your second bike. after about 3 weeks I called Yamaha and asked if I could trade in for something else as I was inside that 30 day window. sales guy asked what I had in mind and i said "Tenere 700" and he Santa clause belly laughed at me before explaining you just cant buy them anywhere, they're preordered a year and a half in advance! I've since added a sissy bar, bought a saddleman HUGE sisy bar bag for lugging gear around since I tried a couple "universal fit" luggage racks that didnt accommodate the reservoir suspension in the back, plus I've since added a Bassani exhaust that cuts off pretty short and might not work with saddlebags..but sounds menacing! lol I'm pretty sure I'm getting a KLR, new or old is the question, I'll pull the trigger next year once my bolt is paid off fully. Its hard to argue with the low cost of a Gen 1 with tons of mods, I've been watching kijiji and 3-4000 gets a guy a decently mod'd bike with most of the stuff you'd want. I think the main consideration for me is suspension, I'm a former strongman competitor and at a hair over 6 feet I typically weigh about 295-305 lbs, though I'm planning to cut down to about 265 now that Im no longer competing in strongman. But thats still pretty heavy when I hear guys saying they're 195 and find the rear to be spongey lol I also know guys load these things up like rented mules without issues too.
