For the tight cartridge slots, put some dielectric grease onto the pins of a NES, SNES, and Genesis cartridge and insert the carts to transfer the grease onto the pins. The grease will not interfere with reading of the games and I've done this on all my non-authentic cartridge systems at this point. It makes a big difference! The worst offender was my "Retroad 5" handheld SNES, but this also has worked with the SupaBoy, Retron 3 HD, and Retron 5 HD.
Informative video. I never owned any of these. I thought about buying one in the past but my friend owned one and told me how horrible they were. I might still try the hd one
I got my HD version along with 6 games in the mail today and I already tried it out. I played and beat Ninja Turtles in Time for the SNES and I was amazed by the HD upgrade on my 4K TV and sound on my receiver. I only bought this system because it's compatible to every retro system I had as a kid. It's better to buy 1 HD system with all 3 formats instead of 3 standard ones. Plus I got a great deal on mine from an eBay seller. It normally goes for $98, but I got mine for $60 and it was good as new and still plastic wrapped. So I got a new console for the price of a used one.
Really liked this review. Just bought this console for my step dad for Christmas as well as super metroid since that is his favorite game of all time and I just wanted to make sure if this console would work well. Sucks to hear that the nes side of things is the weakest link on this console. But, sounds like everything's good on it nevertheless. Thank you very much for this informative review!
Interesting, so this version includes a SNES-to-NES controller adapter. I have the older version that doesn't come with that and my box is slightly different (has the Hyperkin chopped-off upper right corner). I think enough people complained about them not including a NES controller so they started shipping them with the adapter. Does the controller adapter work on original NES consoles and original SNES controllers?
@@StuffWePlay I wish they would sell those separately, though it would've been better to include one of their Scout NES controllers. I use the clear black Scout controller that came with the Retron 2 HD and swapped out the purple B and A buttons for red buttons, to keep the same look as the included SNES and Genesis controllers.
I got the retron 5. Has lag when playing super mario world and having to time your jumps properly. With genesis game, it seem to perform well. I don't think I'll getting another hyperkin console any time soon. I do have an analogue sg, nT and waiting for restock of the Super nT.

Appreciate the video. Helped me decide. One point for clarification please. You often showed inserting a loaded super game boy but never mentioned how well it functioned in the Super Nintendo slot. I’m assuming it worked well but would like a report for sure. Thanks much

Yea I tried a Retron 5 a couple of years ago and within a week it wasn't reading famicom carts (main thing I wanted it for). I got my money back and never replaced it. Been looking for a cheap system that can play NES/Famicom/Super Famicom/SNES games with proper sound emulation but seems like such a thing don't exist. I had a Retroduo a long time ago and the NES slots stopped working most likely because they were so tight. Also the NES sound emulation was awful.
Not that I can find, though I'm giving this comment a heart so I can come back with such a list if I find one :) That said, I can confirm since making this vid that Virtua Racing on Genesis just didn't want to work
My concern with this is that one of my favorite games requires me to use the SELECT button on the second controller to enter a code. I see that the "SEGA" style controller has no select button! Always something.
The Sega-style controller is meant for Genesis games. The Genesis controller did not have a Select button. You'd want to use SNES controllers for those games.
Should you buy one ever? I dont see a point in buying a box thats gonna use emulation anyways? Its already pointless.. might as well get a multi cart... then you might as well just get a pi... i guess i dont see the point in collecting carts etc unless your gonna play on OG hardware or something that is replicating hardware but not an emulator...esp with all the compatibility issues... just get a pi so u can change software etc or keep it pure..
Decent Sega Saturn emulation is demanding even on fairly strong PC's, so It'll be a while before a Saturn Mini comes out and can be at an affordable price sadly.
@@robbystrange4772 There's been some early work on an Saturn FPGA, though the hardware is not cheap and it's still early and can't run anything. I think the biggest hurdle is that a lot of the best Saturn games were Japan exclusive and I don't think a lot of people have nostalgia for it the same way people do for, say PS1 and N64. I think that, plus the extremely weird hardware the Saturn uses is why there's currently not as many emulators as say, PS1.
@@robbystrange4772 A friendly tip, normal Mednafen runs smoother and has less bugs than Retroarch Beetle-Saturn. Retroarch is a couple of versions behind Mednafen if i remember correctly.
@@robbystrange4772 I agree with you, having a hardware accelerated emulator that is well compatible would be awesome. Kronos and YabaSanshiro have some killer features too! I love the higher resolution and Z-buffering (makes the graphics less wobbly) feature. But sadly they are a pain to get working and game compatability is not good yet. But I'm glad they are getting better!
Hyperkin's clones are usually terrible when it comes to cloning and running NES, SNES, Genesis, SMS, and Game Boy games. It just never does those library justice and the HD output they offered aren't even pixel perfect HD either. It basically took the AV output and upscale it to 720p making the pixels and graphics look dazzle or wash out. If all you care about is getting a cheap clone consoles to play all your retro games without breaking the bank then yeah this Hyperkin console is good for that but if you just want a much better clone with all the bells and whistles of making your retro games look fancier and play smoother, the more expensive Analogue FPGA systems are the way to go.
@@StuffWePlay There is a problem when you finish a stage, the light on this stage should be off (darker than non finished ones). On the Retron 3 HD, it's not darker and you can"t differency finished stages and non finished stages. Please test it.
