Matt must be a BMW driver at heart. If he's getting Lane Keeping Assist feedback as he changes lanes on the motorway it is because he didn't bother to use his indicator.

The estate version of this was on my Wife's company car list a few years ago. Nice car, a black Excel model is quite eye catching. The reason the boot is smaller on the 2.o litre is that they have to accommodate the battery in the boot. The GR Sport Hatchbacks with larger wheels are nice too. Good video as usual.

Thanks for the Corolla test. I am a long term VW/Audi customer and always dismissed Toyotas as being boring and unstylish. Well our car was written off while parked and Direct Line (excellent service) loaned us a new style Yaris hybrid, and much to our surprise we loved it - funky looks, nice high crossover style driving position, comfortable and quiet, but as you found with the Corolla, the fuel economy is almost unbelievable - high 60s edging into low 70s. The thing is so darned clever, harvesting the power usually wasted from braking or coasting downhill and giving you back miles of battery quiet travel. It is mostly used in and about London, but cruises happily on motorways in the 70s. The old Yaris looked a bit lacklustre, but the new one is everything one needs in a small car - can’t understand why you don’t see more of them! Thanks for all the entertaining videos.

The 2 litre has the 12 volt battery in the boot, hence the boot is smaller! I’ve never been keen on oilers, so the 1.8 Corolla with an mpg (round town) of 65mpg (with fuel today at 1.81) and no access to a home charger so pure electric and phevs out of the question - it was by far the best choice in todays economic climate!

I have a 2022 Corolla Altis 1.8 saloon (no hybrids were available due to the chip shortage). Over the years, I've had all sorts of cars, new and used from LandCruisers and Pajeros to BMWs and Golf GTIs. What you can say for Toyota, while not the most exciting, is that they are comfortable and have fantastic air con. The extra initial outlay will be recouped as they simply don't go wrong. I think as you get older, you start to prioritize other things in a daily driver car - relative comfort, reliability and economy. On a long run at 110kmh (70 mph ish) it uses about 4.8l/100km with 3 people and luggage on board, which I think is about 49mpg US or 58mpg UK. I have nothing to complain about with the car.

i had different cars in life like 335d and cooper s, due to work was given one and i immediately fell in love with it how quiet it is and when i step out i was like hell no toyota has come a long way! Compares to the Auris it is just a completely different car on how supple it rides and handles, it does grip and grip but a shame the steering is too light. Went with the 2.0 GR touring which is a looker! With fuel prices this high, when you stuck in traffic, your engine is not idling yet you get cold a/c coming! Brilliant!

I can't fault these new Corollas at all. In fact I consider Toyota above most other brands for reliability and value for money. Plus they hold their value very well. I bought a new Landcruiser last year with 10 years unlimited kilometres and fixed price servicing for the first sixty thousand. I believe Mitsubishi now offer 10 years warranty as well now. Something that was unheard of until Kia came along. Cars have really improved in leaps and bounds over the last ten years. With the lane assist I have found it to be problematic on roads where there are roadworks and they have some of the old/temporary lane markings still showing.

🤩Yayyy🥳, The Corolla 🤣. I call mine my little “Slider” aka daily. It’s a 2.0 sedan 6sp. I love it for what it is. It’s the first car that I don’t worry about failing on me. And the Range Rover sits most of the time now but I’ll admit when I get in that rover it’s hard to get back into the Corolla 😩. I thought I’d keep this Corolla forever and then they released a Corolla GR 😤. Anyway great review as always . 🇺🇸

I never "disliked" previous generations of Corollas (including the Auris), but it is nice to see Toyota finally paying attention to driver engagement (which we know they can master - think Supras, MR2s, Celicas etc) and aesthetic desirability in conjunction with build quality.

Good review, I am currently toying with one to replace my Seat that is coming towards the end of its life. I also wanted to point a few things out from a Toyota Employee point of view. 1. The lane keep assist will not let you change lanes unless you use your indicator. You can turn it off when you start the car but it will turn itself back on each time you do start. Don't be a typical BMW driver and indicate ;) 2. I personally wouldn't recommend buying one as your Spain car. If you leave it sat for a week or two. The 12v battery will drain and you'll have a car that won't start. You can always charge the battery via a trickle charger but that can take anywhere between 8-12 hours to charge. Most hybrid cars aren't made to stand, they're made to be driven on a daily basis. Other than that, they are cracking cars! Look really stylish now that Toyota are attempting to appeal towards a younger audience.

Good review. I’m looking them up as I might replace my Yaris hybrid by one eventually. Re. the luggage capacity, it appears that the 2.0 has a different battery position, which uses up the space compared with the 1.8. They can’t squeeze the 12V one in alongside the larger engine, and the traction battery is different as well.

Sounds like another good, honest review Matt, I think your spot on about brand appeal. It's a very powerful emotion and one the German badges use to the fullest, although I do think it's possibly on the wane.
@bonzobanana1
@bonzobanana1 2 года назад
I personally don't see the German badges as quality engineering anymore, I see them as low quality high cost cars and so their badges have no appeal to me. Japanese cars are typically made to tighter engineering tolerances and with higher quality components and that is what matters to me. I do feel cabin quality often fails Japanese cars but I guess the money is spent elsewhere and the current Mazda's actually look super stylish inside and out. The sort of people who buy German cars especially secondhand don't seem that clever to me, they seem obsessed with brands and pay through the nose to get them and put up with high cost servicing and repairs. Also the type of people who buy German marques seem to have the lowest skills on the road and the least patience. The German brands just seem to attract the worst possible people. As a cyclist you always have to be wary of German marques and white van men more than other vehicles it seems. It seems often people buy performance German cars and then get very frustrated when they are in traffic queues and are prevented from going fast, they seem the most keen to overtake at risky times and put the safety of others at risk. Just making the point that people that buy German marques can be perceived very badly by others. Of course I realise that is a terrible generalisation but I feel strongly there is a huge amount of truth to it based on my experiences and what you read in the press regarding drivers who drive recklessly and cause accidents. Even the police have a joke name for car incidents/accidents where they call it an AAA incident which basically mean's 'Another Audi Arse-ole' rather than the Automobile Association which you might think it meant. I just feel its weird how cars are perceived because most products people want quality and reliability. However I guess cars are really more about fashion and how people want to be perceived by others and perhaps German marques nowadays present a slightly more dangerous and reckless persona that many like.

@@bonzobanana1 I strongly agree with all your points. Japanese brands do seem to just not care about the cabin styling and nicities that the German cars do. By contrast I find the German cars dull, expensive, unreliable and driven by arse holes.

As a former employee of Toyota, and Japanese cars being my go-to choice, please don’t go for the new Corolla hybrid if not driving often. They have a battery issue when left for a week or two without starting, then need a boost to get going. Once they crack that - there’s nothing to lose!

Good review, and the Toyota / Lexus hybrids are getting better all the time. Just to point out, the relax warranty doesn’t cover everything the main 3 year one does, so have a look at the fine print. For example, it doesn’t cover the infotainment screen should it fail. Then again as you say, these are so reliable that you’re hardly going to need it, but it’s good to know it’s there to cover most stuff.

Great review Matt, I bought a new Corolla Design a couple of months back as an additional car for the family, I find myself grabbing the keys more often than expected, gets 58mpg, easy and comfortable to drive. My other two cars are a Bentley Mulsanne and Porsche Macan S, so it’s really surprised me how good it is. I’ve had a few Lexus RX hybrids over the years taking my last one to 200k miles without major expenditure and that confidence in the engineering set the Corolla above the competition for me.

If you buy this car thinking it is going to be a super fast sports car then you could be upset . But if you drive this car for any length of time you will find it is a very well built car that will never let you down. It is a very nice drive a good middle point between the Golf and the Civic . In my opinion it is softer than the Golf and harder than the Civic . This means that for anyone who doesn't want to go motor racing this is the perfect car . Get one and after you have driven it for any length of time you will come around to my way of thinking .

Corolla... Best selling car of all time? No. They make lots of different cars but just call them all the same name... Suppose ford called all the escorts, focuses, fiestas the same name... Would that be the best selling car ever. Honestly a corolla is only better than a bus..

Sensible advice Matt and all the reasons I’ve bought myself a 2019 RAV4. Roomy, comfy SUV daily driver which is giving me 50+mpg Top spec low mileage one owner which, (as you said), will be under manufacturers warranty up to 100,000mls…. what’s not to like? Oh and it offsets the V8 SL500 perfectly lol 😆

It looks a good car and as I've found with my Prius should be reliable. I actually prefer the joystick gear selector. Having said that in the 3rd gen Prius your hand virtually falls on it due to the sloping centre console. Maybe it's not so good on other models. I've got an automatic Honda Jazz and although I don't dislike the gearchange on that I'd prefer the Prius. I don't have a real problem with the CVT box either. It can be a little noisy if you rev it hard but I doubt that will be coming from the transmission. Maybe it's to do with the Atkinson cycle engines that are often used. I know how they work but maybe someone out there may know if this affects the sound. The Toyota Corolla isn't one model as it has variants for different markets. In many Asian markets there is the Corolla Altis. If you go to Bangkok and take a taxi you'll most likely to get an Altis which is bigger than the model here. To be honest the fact that Toyotas can stand that sort of use is all the recommendation you need.

Great review and good to see the Corolla getting the recognition it deserves. It’s because I’m a petrolhead and have been burnt by the so called premium manufacturers that these cars are the way to go. Solid, reliable, great customer service and they won’t cost the earth to run! Also, Toyota standard warranty is 5 years and Lexus is 3 years, just fyi. Their extended warranty once you service your car with them as you mentioned is unbeatable.

See in Australia, European vehicles are often seen as premium, unreliable and expensive to run while Asian brands such as Toyota, Hyundai, Kia are solid and reliable. Non-car people will question your purchasing decisions if you buy European. There is even controversy over our Police forces switching to BMW, Volkswagen and Skoda now Ford and GM no longer manufacture suitable vehicles locally. Whereas it seems in Europe to be the exact opposite which seems bizarre. I think brands like Volkswagen, Skoda and even Fiat do this by only offering high specification vehicles in Australia. I do think this latest generation of Toyota's including Camry, Corolla, Yaris etc.. they seem to finally be trying to be somewhat aspirational with GR variants and decent handling. I think though the interior of the current Corolla is the best yet but also impractical space wise compared to competitors.

Interesting for me as a possible next step. BUT NO. I have 2 Prius (prii)? 2009(59) 47000 and never a problem after 14yrs. 58mpg av. 2010 1.8 39600, 65av. More room. But Parkers only rate the Corolla at 55av. So like all Toyota products since the intro of the hybrid. NONE beat the Prius. I suppose it would be unkind to point out that in a manual car you would change down to accelerate and...noise.

I have had my Corolla hybrid 1.8 Design for 5 months and your review sealed my decision to purchase, replacing my 10 year old Citroen DS3. I learnt to drive in a Corolla in 1977. My parents both owned Toyotas, a Camry and a first generation Yaris, both great cars. She is great to drive, my first automatic so the CVT gear box took little while to get used to. Great for cruising on the motorway giving me on average 55 to 58 mpg, increased to 64mpg around town. Eco mode most of the time and surprises me when EV kicks in when cruising at 70mph. Cold weather and short trips not as economical as hoped, but still a great car.

Car prices are crazy. If I I want a “new-ish” car then it’s gonna have 80k+. So the sexy choice is a BMW 3 series but the sensible choice is a Corolla in a Sport spec. Maintaining a high mileage BMW is a crippling cost! But if a Corolla is anything like our 15 year old Lexus IS250. It won’t go wrong!
