This is part two of my three part series: Advice on Buying a Telescope. In part one
Types of Telescopes: • ADVICE ON BUYING A TEL...
I went over the three types of telescopes, the strengths and weaknesses of each type and what kinds of things to think about when purchasing a telescope. In this, part two, I will talk about whether buying a used telescope makes sense and is a good idea to save some money. I will tell you what kinds of things to think about and watch out for when buying a used telescope. In part three I'll make a suggestion on what to do with the money you save.

I enjoyed these stories. Reminded me of Astrobiscuit's adventures. I just think that 8" or 6" dob is better choice for a beginner. I'm a big strong man, but I use my portable 6" scope probably 10 times more than 10" dob, only because of the weight. 8" dobs have almost the same light gathering capacity as 10", but they are significantly lighter, and less prone to have bearings' issues. Another thing to consider is the age of the scope. Mirrors degrade over time, so newer 8" can provide the same brightness as an older 10". Greets from Australia.

Thank you. Wow, I'm very impressed my video reminded you of Astrobiscuit. At my house in Montana I have a 10" Dob that gets quite a bit of use but only because it is on a hand truck and I can easily wheel it out to the driveway. I think it would get far less use if I had to put it into the car every time I wanted to use it. In addition to what you said about the mirrors degrading over time is that many people put their telescopes into their garage thinking that the cap will be adequate to protect it but actually both telescopes I looked at had spider webs inside the tubes because you really need to cover the scope with a scope cover in addition to the cap. Thank you for your comments and greetings back at you in Australia.

USA and UK citizens are very spoilt when it comes to used astronomical equipment. There so much more used stock available at very good prices compared to 3rd world backwater countries. Where I live Craigslist doesn't exist but Facebook Marketplace seems to be the place to find stuff and after about a year of waiting, I managed to pick up my first telescope for the equivalent of $160 USD. It's a 1980's orange tube, fork mount, Celestron C8 with EQ wedge and tripod. It has a couple of dents, some missing bolts and the 6x30 finder scope is also missing but not a big loss as those finders are not great to start with in a light polluted sky. After some TLC and replacing missing bolts it looks like a good buy and the optics seem great to my untrained eye. A 8x50 or 9x50 RACI finder scope can be had for less than $150 new or even less used and is a big upgrade over the straight-through 6x30 finder scope. A new Celestron 8 SCT OTA (without a mount) sells for around $1350 so paying < $310 for an close equivalent but still including an EQ mount (good enough for visual and planetary astrophotography) seems like a good deal to me. My suggestion before buying a used telescope on a tight budget is, do some research first (www.cloudynights.com is an excellent resource), be willing to perform some repairs and then be very patient. At some point, someone nearby with an astronomy habit has to eventually die of old age. ☺

True story - I have a newbie friend who wanted to get her first telescope. "8-inch Dob, used" was my instantaneous answer. I found her one and put her onto it. We inspected it in a remote session and it passed all my tests. She paid $300 for a good-as-new telescope.

Fun video! I always like your road trips. But I don't think many people shopping for a first telescope, new or used, will know how to collimate. Hopefully, they'll have a knowledgeable companion like you. 🙂

Thanks, Walter. You're probably right about that and the owners apparently weren't aware how to collimate either.

That's a good idea. I'm always afraid of scammers or perverts listing their items. I'm not sure which was worse-- hanging that telescope out the window on the highway or dusting the mirror.

A good test when buying an older reflector is to shine a torch into the rear of the primary mirror. If you can detect any light passing through the mirror then that signifies that the coatings on the mirror are failing. Clear skies Tsula 🔭✨.

@tsulasbigadventures
@tsulasbigadventures Месяц назад
Joe: Thanks. How long did it take you to cram that 12" into a Porshe Boxster? In other news, I saw in one of your videos that you bought something from Ali Express. I have always been afraid to buy from them because they are a suspicious Chinese company. But after I saw that you bought something I gave them a try. They listed the item as "free shipping." Then after I placed the order I received a message from them saying that I owed $75 shipping. I said I refused to pay shipping and they kept harassing me and finally I had to file a dispute with my credit card company and low and behold a few days later they claimed it had been shipped. I still have not received the item. But I don't think I will be using them again However, I will be buying a used telescope in the future if it checks out.

@@tsulasbigadventures OK as far as the 12 inch the light bridge breaks apart because it’s a trust tube I also rebuilt my base out of real wood plywood, not even made it a bit shorter so both the base and the bottom of the mirror easily fits in the front trunk and then you can add some accessories on the sides the poll go behind my seats and even the upper is able to fit in the truck Some people don’t realize that the engine is behind the seats that’s why they call it a mid engine so you really have a back trunk and the front trunk not bad for a two seater sports car Express have maybe eight different times and I’ve never had a problem never had anything lost or stolen and I never had this problem with a shipping There are some sellers that charge shipping on top and then there are other sellers that it’s included. I always try to get the ones that are included because normally shipping as you say can add up so you have to look at what seller and how they charge There’s literally over hundreds of sellers on AliExpress so you just have to be careful. Maybe you didn’t see it. I’m not sure but I never had any issues with AliExpress. And even if something did go wrong and I had to claim for a refund, I thought it was got my money back or a lot of times they would either refund me like 50% and let me keep the item because it would be more money to ship it back I hope that helps One more thing there’s also big companies on AliExpress as well as individuals so you should look at their rating and who they are first

In my local Facebook marketplace listings, it seems used 8 inch dobs are very common (and I’ve seen some down to as low as $300, seemingly in good condition). Used 10 inch dobs though seem to be rare to find For new ones, skywatcher was just running a good sale with their 8 inch for $500 maybe a month or two ago, it has ended since. The 10 inch was also on sale for I think $700

I guess it was just a coincidence that I found two 10" Dobs for sale nearby. I offered that lady $350 for her 10" but she refused. I guess it helps to just keep checking. $700 is a good price for a new 10".

my 10years daughter mistakenly bought online from TEMU ... telescope m-30070....focal length 300mm....diam 70mm... but not satisfied with eye piece 20mm and 6mm..then i did another mistake i ordered 3x barlow lense from TUMU ..now unable to fit that into diagonal barrel its look like x3 barlow is big . again loss of money .we cant figure out the barrel inch size to fit in..we are beginners and confused.. .. now my kids are asking for a good one...they love to watch birds, trees specially moon and nearby stars...
