Does it make sense to buy airline frequent flyer miles or hotel points?
It depends. You need to run the numbers and see if it's worth it to buy miles/points.
Step 1. Check the cash price of the hotel/flight
Step 2. Check how many points/miles it's going to cost for the hotel/flight
Step 3. Check how much it's going to cost to purchase the points/miles needed
Compare options 1 and 3 and pick whichever one will cost less money
Tip: most miles and points purchases are processed by Points.com which will code as misc. so you won't earn airline miles or hotel points from purchasing points.
American Airlines, Avianca LifeMiles and Delta Skymiles are 3 airline points that code as travel

Would buying miles from Delta trigger the airline incidental credit on the Platinum if I have Delta selected as my preferred airline?

I haven’t seen any data points indicating buying miles would trigger the Amex platinum credit. Although buying flights under $100 has historically triggered the $200 credit

Officially Amex excludes buying miles in it's terms, but it all depends on how Delta codes it.

In my experience Only buy points when they have the 100x promotion. Specially with Hilton

It actually was for me. As of 3.1.23 Marriot offering 133,000 points for only $1187 but that turns into 40,000 Avios or you can keep it at 133,000 points for $1187

So should we enter these numbers into your CPP spreadsheet and consider the value? Or is that just for when we're looking to transfer CC points to hotel points?

Hey! the CPP spreadsheet wouldn't help you decide if purchasing points make sense. You can do that by doing the 3 boxes like I did in the video. Box 1 price of the hotel Box 2 how many points they are charging Box 3 how much it'll cost to buy the points Compare box 1 and box 3 and pick whichever is the cheapest

Hey Max, I am looking at an iberia business flight from chicago to madrid and it cost 34000 avios and 100 dollars which will give me about 16 cent per point (Cash value at 5000) , or I can pay 6800 avios and 650 dollars at check out, which will give me 72 cent per point. is this something worth doing ? Using 500 dollars to save 28000 avios. How much is avios generally worth ? Thanks

Hi me and my gf recently did a last minute purchase of AA points for our round trip Japan flight with my mom (got them 50% for 210k for 3 round economy trips), which ended up costing around $1360 (tax included) instead of the listed price of about $1800 (probably close to 1950-2000 with tax). Is this a good deal? We couldn’t check every airline (united rates seemed to be dogshit, but I think Canada airlines might’ve been slightly cheaper $1170ish but she wanted to ride on JAL), but my main question I guess is whether the points earned back might’ve been worth actually buying the tickets outright through the travel portal (I think she only gets 3% cash back through that, but I’m assuming the Chase portal might’ve given better cash cost rates not sure, so the money saved + the increased cashback could’ve been better I’m just not sure). Also on an unrelated note, how does the 1.5 per cent redemption value with the chase sapphire reserve (1.25 preferred) work? Is it just that the points you transfer are upscaled when you transfer? Or is it like you have to use the chase portal and it upscaled it there? Like does it apply to transferable points?

@@andrewtobias4545 That 1.5x is fantastic if you want to book a Hyatt Hotel. Sometimes the nights cost less if you book directly via the Chase Portal, sometimes it costs less points to transfer them to Hyatt and book via Hyatt. Always price out both options before moving your points. On flights, it lets you use your points on any available flight, but the cost is absurd. I would rather buy points like this video suggests.

I’m a Marriott Bonvoy member and I’m staying at a hotel for a total of 11 months. Should I stick to getting bonvoy points or should I change it so that I get airline points instead? I actually fly a lot more than staying at hotels, but i know i can convert bonvoy points to airline points later on?
