CLARIFICATION. Not all watches are purpose made homages. Some are just very 'Homagie' if that's a word. The message is the same.

Agree with point 3. I wasn’t sure what I liked and trying on in a shop for a few seconds with an unadjusted bracelet told me nothing. An affordable homage that I can wear for a few weeks told me what I liked.

An excellent point. If a cheapish homages helps to guide you either to or away from a certain watch or style of watch, it’s money well spent & probably saved too.👍

I have the black Steeldive Willard and I think that’s okay because Seiko is hommaging their own original watch for a very impertinent price. And yes, the lume is really great. 🕐⚙️🍸

I have the black and blue version as when Seiko increased there prices without I think justification it was a no brainer . Better specs, solid build and a fraction of the price. Don't get me wrong I am a Seiko fan but really a Captain Willard for over a grand .. there having a laugh. I can go into a Seiko AD in Dubai and they will give you up to 25% without asking less discount on popular models. 🤣
@pk1342
@pk1342 4 месяца назад
@@gillyharwoodI have both an sd1970 and an spb165. Firstly the SD specs aren't better they are mostly worse, unless you count the ceramic bezel. Secondly the Seiko is executed/finished way better. The SD looks cheap side by side.

@@pk1342 My point is Seiko's are over priced and unless your a avid Seiko fan there are better watches at the same price or cheaper . Everyone is entitled to there opinion and personally would not buy a Seiko with an asking price of £1000. I would rather save up and buy a Grand Seiko.
@pk1342
@pk1342 4 месяца назад
@@gillyharwood I paid £800 for it brand new. And you can get the non special editions on offers nearly all year round for £800 or even less. A grand Seiko will cost 5-10x the price and Grand Seiko also don't make a Willard. Seiko increased their prices in line with inflation and upping their game. Pre 2019 they weren't making willards or any divers with the quality of the current SPB heritage watches - they just weren't. If a Seiko is overpriced because a Chinese brand can offer a sapphire and 200m WR for cheaper then everything else is overpriced too, including microbrands with the same spec for more than £50-100

Great vid on a divisive topic. Some great reasons pro homages. Interestingly, what seems more divisive is the country of origin. Traditional watch making regions or China. For most it seems homages made in traditional regions are acceptable but Chinese! On no! They do generate some hate. Perhaps this would be lessened, if they were purchased from the manufacturer etc rather than AE? Although in reality it’s no different from buying anything from anywhere online. Personally, my only negative is the lack of history/heritage of AE watches. But that is an individual’s choice, means nothing to many, it’s their money. Definitely some great value options from China.

I think Homage watches are both a great alternative for whenever you like a certain design characteristic but is just not your grail watch therefore you can enjoy the design without leaving your life savings on it, and also in the case of a watch you are planning to use every day and for obvious reasons is going to get wear and tear therefore you dont want to have a $10k+ watch on your wrist but you still like that design so you can wear it without remorse or worrying is going to get destroyed. Stop elitism, not everyone can afford the ridiculous prices of todays watches, and as long is not an exact copy, even big brands do homages.

Love your points! I will add that there are lot of watches that don't offer Rolex level finishing but still demand a super high "swiss" premium - I am looking at you Mido/Doxa/Certina. Aside from using a lower beat movement, many higher end homages actually offer you better fit and finish than those entry level swiss brands

Let me put it this way : Why would I spend 800 on a Seiko Sumo that has a aluminium bezel and pressed clasp with an unsigned crown when I got myself a Steeldive 1971 that has a ceramic bezel and signed crown for just 160 ?

I am all for homages as long as they aren't intended to deceive people into thinking they are the real thing. The more of a twist the homage has the more likely I am to buy it. In fact with crime the way it is, I think wearing very close homages to an expensive watch can be a dangerous thing to do. I'd be happy to wear any of those three.

Homage watches are awesome, but I don't think they should dominate your collection. That's my opinion. Most collections will never include dozens of rolex, ap, patek, etc. However, you can get some of that in your collection for much less. While also having some great original designs. I'm a fan of having quality builds regardless of brand.
@gillyharwood
@gillyharwood 4 месяца назад
Well said .. quality is important. Take the Moonswatch ... garbage compared to a homage watch with sapphire glass, serviceable movement , stainless steel, good water resistance and Speedmaster vibes. Its a homage watch but I cant hear many calling it out for it ..
@YouTube_is_full_of_trolls
@YouTube_is_full_of_trolls 4 месяца назад
@gillyharwood agreed. That's my opinion, at least. I prefer quality over brand. However, swatch gets away with the homage factor because they own omega. Of course, the speedmaster is older than their ownership, but that why I think nobody mentions it on the moonswatch.

People who hate on homage watches are sad sacks who can only feel good about themselves and their things by passing negative judgement on others and their things. It’s insecurity plain and simple. These type of ppl should be ignored. To balance that - same can be said of ppl who hate on luxury watches etc. It’s for same reason as above. If you can’t simply be happy with your own tastes, budget, and choices then ask yourself why. And even better than that…..keep it to yourself.

Those who hate homage watches in my opinion are watch snobs. They buy a watch spend maybe over a £1000 then come across a homage lookalike and for some reason are personally offended. 😂 If you look back at watches in the 50s,60s and even 70s many look the same . Denison supplied the same case for a number of brands Rolex, Omega for example and the dials were similar... so are they homage watches ? Homage watches have been around for decades but because of the intense competition of the watch market and the snobbery of some watch owners there is now a stigma attached to them. I have both original and homage and I don't care because Im a watch lover.

Rolex decided to 'homage' their own watches with Tudor to reach a broader market, so if Rolex can offer lower priced, yet still expensive, watches heavily influenced by their own designs why shouldn't others but at an affordable price? It's like saying no other company should produce a polo shirt as Lacoste were first to mass market and produce it in Europe in the 1930's, even though Lacoste copied Brooks Brothers in the US who first offered the style in the 1890's but who they themselves took influence from British soldiers playing polo in India in the 1850's, nobody accuses Ralph Lauren of making 'homage' polo shirts, too much negative hype around 'homage' watches imo, mainly from the Swiss made or nothing absolutists!

They are Fakagés not Homagés. I stick to Helms and Erebus personally, but do have quite a few Pagani Designs that I bought for fun and to check out if I like a certain watch.
