This is my review of the 8-24mm Zoom eyepiece from Svbony. It definitely represents an upgrade over the standard eyepieces telescopes normally come with and like any other zoom eyepiece, it makes a great grab-and-go eyepiece. Enjoy this full review!

It turns out that SvBONY produces 5 zoom eyepieces. A $150 3-8mm 6 element zoom eyepiece SV215 with a 56 degree field of view (FOV) and 10mm eye relief. A $40 7-21mm 6 element zoom eyepiece SV135 with a 57-40 degree FOV and 18-16.3mm eye relief. A $40 10-30mm 5 element zoom eyepiece SV170 with a 51-33 FOV and 17-18.5mm eye relief. A $64 8-24mm 7 element zoom eyepiece SV171 with a 56-38 degree FOV and 18-19.5mm eye relief (this is the one you tested). And a $80 7.2-21.6mm 7 element zoom eyepiece SV191 with a 65-42 degree FOV and 18-20mm eye relief (this is the one I bought).

Hello Bogdan. I personally own this eyepiece and the Baader Hyperion zoom eyepiece and I was curious about your opinion about it and I can tell you I do agree with all the points that you've made. It is indeed really good for the money and not a lot different ( except for the field of view and the stifness when selecting different focal lengths) compared to Baader Hyperion (haven't noticed any differences in quality of the view to be honest) so I think it is a great buy for its price if you are fine with a narrow field of view ( especially at above 20mm setting). Kudos to Svbony and let's hope they'll keep it up! As usual a very honest and well explained review!

Another professional video from Bogdan! Thank you! Suspicion confirmed: an EP which is 5 times more expensive than a 'cheap' one is NOT 5 times better than this but only a small percentage, maybe 10-20%. Best thougt may be to adapt the price of the EPs to the price of the Telescope.

Hi Bogdan, after taking up the hobby 2 years ago on retirement, and after watching many videos (incl quite a few of yours) before buying upgrade eyepieces this was the first one I bought. I used it all the time & I thought the same as you re the difficulty operating the zoom mechanism. After a bit of mechanical reasoning it is actually pretty easy. Instead of holding the bottom of the barrel you should instead hold the rubber grip and turn the top section by operating the twist-up eye cup. Once it reaches it's stop, in both directions, it will operate the zoom. This may mean readjusting the eye cup to suit but that's very easy. I do like this eyepiece but have since accumulated the SvB 20, 9 & 6mm WE eyepieces plus the 15mm 72 deg model (really love this one) . I find myself using them most of the time instead. I can't compare to the more expensive brands but overall I'm very happy with their quality and performance assisted by adding the impressive SvB dielectric diagonal.

High production quality video review. I agree this eyepiece hits a good quality vs price compromise. However, its image quality is not in the same league as the Hyperion. My Svbony 8 -24mm zoom is not stiff. In fact, it feels and SOUNDS like a sloppy rotary combination lock on a high school locker. It rattles when shaken gently. Smooth or tight are not words I would use to describe its mechanical operation. The field edges are NOT aberration free unless your vision is clouded by the low price. I mostly use my 8-24mm in my C90 as a range spotting scope, so the edge distortion doesn't much interfere with my application, but check it while looking at a distant brick wall, then you'll see how ugly it gets at the edge.

I have this and honestly it is soft on the 8 mm end, it sharpens around 16 mm and good at 24 mm. But the most annoying thing is zooming this in and out, without having a proper place to hold, the zoom stiction high, it rotates inside the diagonal holder tube. Super annoying really.

Hi, thanks for this review. I've just recieved this zoom eyepiece today and I've to say I'm happy with it. It works fine for me. I'm using it on a SV41 Pro Mak for terrestrial use essentially. The mecanism is smooth (no hard working like yours). The apparent field of view is good, I find it even better than the SV135. The front lens is huge. It have few downside: it's really big and doesn't fit in the eyepiece holder of the SV41 Pro but that's okay, it works fine anyway. It's not parfocal and I have to adjust the eyecup when I zoom in. I would like to try it on the Moon but the weather will be cloudy this week. :/ (I apologize if my english isn't so good)

@@BogdanDamian Actually, I thought I would elaborate on my thoughts a bit about why I would like to see you do a comparison between these two zoom oculars. First, they seem to be close in price and therefore competitive with each other. As budget priced zooms, I am wondering which one presents a sharper image, has more contrast, and which one appears to have a larger field of view. I own a Tele Vue click-zoom 8-24, but would like to purchase an inexpensive zoom for outreach programs. That way I don’t have to worry about it getting abused by observers. I just received the SvBONY 7.2 to 21.6 7-element Zoom that I bought. I did not get it to replace my other eyepieces although it does fill a gap between my 15mm and my 9mm (I have 25mm, 32mm and a 40mm for lower powers). I got it for when I have the telescope out to show to friends or neighbors as I won't have to fumble around switching eyepieces in the dark. Playing around with it, I found you have to use the rubber eye cup to change the setting. Rotating the eye cup all the way down to rotate the zoom one way and rotating it all the way up to rotate it the other way. Trying to use the small part at the bottom doesn't work as it is too narrow and too slick. I think this is why the eye cup was made out of thicker, harder rubber than usual. I first test my eyepieces by pointing them at the computer screen. It should produce a bright (out of focus) image without extraneous colors and it did. (I have some Plossls of another brand that fail both parts of this test). It also gives me an idea of the field of view and the eye relief.

Hi there great review I'd 100% recommend a zoom eyepiece for beginners in astronomy on basic telescopes, and the less u spend the better as u will out grow a zoom eyepiece, especially if u have an eq mount, I'm not saying that they don't have their place, for the planets however if you don't have the ability to make small adjustments then go for it, if u do I'd spend a bit more and get the svbony 68○ as from personal experience they will last u longer 🤷 I have a hyperion zoom I never uses any more 🤷

Hi Bogdan! Would you recommend getting a Baader Morpheus 14mm for planetary viewing that I can pair with a Televue 2x barlow? Or is it better to sticking to Televue EPs instead? Was looking into getting that and maybe the Televue DeLite 9mm (from your review) as my main EPs. Can you please advise whats best for planetary viewing as I live in a Bortle 8 zone. My scope is an 8" dobsonian.
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 2 года назад
@ForzaInternazionale9 Hi! If you have the possibility, then get the DeLite from Tele Vue. In my opinion it's one of the best eyepieces for planetary on the market. If you already have a 2x Barlow, then go for the 9mm version. Otherwise maybe try out the 7mm. If money is an issue, then go for the Hyperion instead of the Morpheus. It's very good mid-range eyepiece and you'll get the same image quality as with the Morpheus, but only with a smaller apparent field of view. The extra field of view on the Morpheus is kinda waisted when observing planets because these appear relatively small in the night sky regardless of the magnification. Hope this helps.

Later on you'll have a much easier time deciding what you like about astronomy and and in which direction you want to go with the setup. It's going to be easier to decide about which fixed eyepieces to get. A good zoom eyepiece will also make for the perfect travel eyepiece when you don't have the space to carry everything with you. @BogdanDamian Год назад
@linou1986 Hi! It really depends on you budget. The mark IV is the better zoom eyepiece, no question about that. But it's not by much while it costs 3 times more than the svbony. The only real downside of the svbony is the narrower fov at the longer focal length settings. In terms of brightness, contrast and sharpness the difference between these two aren't big at all, maybe 10% or so in favor of the mark IV. The mark IV also has the advantage of being part of a well though out Baader modular system, where you can get a lot of accessories compatible with each other. This also is something worth considering. If the budget is tight, than go for the svbony. If money is no issue, the god for the mark IV. Hope this helps.

@Brian Lopez Hi Brian! Out of the two I would go for the sv191 9-27, but better still would be the sv191 7.2-21.6. It offers a wider AFOV and longer eye relief than the 9-27. The 7.2mm focal length combined with your telescope will also offer a decent 138x magnification which is good for planetary observations.

@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian Год назад
@Brian Lopez Hi Brian! No worries. With a 2x Barlow and with the eyepiece set to 7.2mm the resulting magnification will be 277x which is above the maximum theoretical magnification of your telescope (228x). So you are correct. In this case it will be too much. But the nice thing about a zoom eyepiece is that you can manually adjust the focal length. In your case, every time you want to use the Barlow you need to set the eyepiece to ~9mm to max out the telescope. Below that you use it without a Barlow. The advantage of the 7.2-21.6mm sv191 is that, compared to the other zooms, it offers more useful magnification range (for planetary) where a Barlow is not needed. If you have a high quality Barlow that all this doesn't matter, but if it's less than perfect, then the use of a Barlow will reduce the image quality a bit. So avoiding the Barlow might be a good idea. Hope this helps.

I use it only between 8-16mm, only because of comfort, not having to change eyepieces. Beyond 16 the field of view is significantly diminished. Using its barlow is worse than meh... So, if you can enjoy a 7-21 svbony, good for you, for me it's a waste of money. I tend to go for the Hyperion Mark IV (without its barlow), a televue 2x barlow, and a Nagler5 31mm, that would be enough for me (keeping the 9mm and 25mm that I already have). @@florinenescu2837 The Morpheus (which i own) are overrated, they have a yellow tint that becomes more illuminous yellow the brighter the object. Try it on a sunny day, the image is so washed out the view is almost invisible, my Celestron X-Cel LX (which i own except the 2.3mm) has a neutral view and shows more detail, narrower field of view but excellent eye relief. No one talks about the kidney beaning or astigmatism in the Morpheus or the slight chromatic aberration and the blurry edges. My APM 100 degree Eyepieces are also nuetral in view but sharper, the eye relief is less but you can pull your head back which reduces the field of view slightly to increases eye relief. The SvBony 7-21mm was the only zoom eyepiece i recommended to people, now i also recommend (budget allowing) the SvBony 3-8 zoom, its on par with the Televue zoom but a fraction of the cost. These 2 zooms, after my comparisons with other zooms makes these look either under priced or the more expensive ones over priced. These are in F5 and lower telescopes where the biggest challenge is coma in a Newtonian or Chromatic Aberration in a Achromat telescope. High focal ratio scopes, almost all eyepieces look perfect. A 31mm Nagler is huge, sticking it in a long barlow is crazy, that would stick out to something like 30cm, even on big dobs that would be so uncomfortable its not even funny but each to their own. The 28mm William Optics, also sold under Nirvana, Astrotech and others are a fraction of the price, slightly less field of but has about 95%+ of the quality. However, your biggest issue is your attitude. Not everyone can afford high budgets for marginal improved views like those of us who have, most people have more important things to focus on and its more important to encourage people to become astronomers, not try to push them away with arrogant attitudes like "mine is better than yours so give up unless you spend obscene amounts of cash on equipment i like" because that is exactly how you come across. You can achieve fantastic views with budget equipment, the objects we look at wont explode and don't discriminate like some pompous gits in this hobby who care more about equipment than the sky, all that matters is that people are content with what they have and see. People like you give this hobby a bad name.
