In this video we unbox and test the CoolDigital AV2HDMI Adapter.
To order a CoolDigital AV2HDMI adapter please visit the link below:
amzn.to/2CGDfsd
A company called CoolDigital reached out to us with a sample of their latest AV2HDMI adapters, designed to allow you to connect older AV-equipped items to modern HDMI TVs. To make sure the CoolDigital AV2HDMI Adapter works properly you'll want to use quality cables and connect them firmly into the box itself (yellow/video, red/right audio, white/left audio) along with the micro USB cabe for power. To toggle between 16:9 and 4:3 formats you'll need to hold down the Format button for about 3 seconds, while a press and release of the Format button toggles you between 720P and 1080P. I've found that if the video quality doesn't look the best switching from 1080P to 720P makes a significant difference.
With my original Nintendo Famicom that has been AV modded with Wai Wai World 2 it introduced some vertical “stripes” that could be seen right on the main intro splash screen. There were some other issues such as visible overscan, but compared to other units I've tested this seemed better when set to 4:3 and 720P resolution. When I set things to 16:9 and 1080P however things did not look great; I definitely recommend sticking with 4:3 and 720P for older systems.
Next up was my USA-based NES & Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. There was a ton of noise on the mat of the game and it was really trippy. I had a hard time with this just from a visual standpoint myself. One good thing is that the audio was pretty crisp & there was little if any lag introduced.
From here I moved to the Sega Genesis & it looked a lot better in 720P/4:3. Playing Streets of Rage 2 felt pretty solid, if just a touch on the blurry side, but it was definitely playable. My opinion on the CoolDigital Box was definitely improving.
My N64 was next with Shadows of the Empire & I have to say this looked solid to me. Not Ultra HDMI quality but pretty decent. The images were good, definitely better than the AV cables would have looked.
Finally it was time for my Gamecube with F-Zero GX to it. While no-where near as sharp & crisp as the GC HD it did look a better than the standard AV cables. With this test it really underscored the importance of a good quality signal going into the CoolDigital converter; if you have a better input signal the output result is much better too.
Why it RoX:
- Adapts AV to HDMI for easier connections
- Features 4:3 &16:9 modes
- 1080P & 720P picture modes
- Metal casing dissipates heat much better than other converters with molded cases
- Micro USB connection for power instead of Mini USB
- Micro USB Cable included
What could be improved?
- If you have a low quality input signal the output will suffer
- Box indicates no power needed but power IS required
- Somewhat short Micro USB cable included
Should you buy one?
Once set to 4:3 and 720P the CoolDigital converter did look and sound better than the one featured in our original video. For the money it is ok, you just need to remember that the better quality signal you have coming into the box the better quality you’ll get out of it.

Switch to 4:3... hold down the button for 3 seconds and release, and it will show the word "Pano" at the top of the screen. When you see the word "Pano" appear on the screen, hold the button down for another 3 seconds and release, then the word "auto" appears. When "auto" appears, hold the button down for another 3 seconds and release, then it says "4:3."

I can't recall which games run at 480i, but that might be why some of those Gamecube games look even better than usual, as these cheap boxes can actually upscale and interlace 480i properly, unlike 240p which they cannot properly upscale.

Rather than power supply, they should have said it doesn’t need an AC outlet. I’m guessing the Famicom/NES issues are some sort of interference issue, though I can’t explain why they’re more noticeable on certain colors. I do find these devices fascinating, partially because of their significant flaws.

Have you tried to play Punch Out when hooking your Famicom up to a modern display that does have AV inputs? Can you see those lines still? It could be interference coming from the inside of your system itself. AV mods can be touchy & can easily introduce horizontal, vertical or other types of lines thru the image when interference is present. Sometimes it can be difficult to remove. It just depends on the mod. It helps to use shielded wire for the mod itself internally as well as using the shortest wire runs possible, as well as keeping the video signal wire away from any audio chips or other signal traces on the board. If I had to guess I would say that whoever did your AV mod to your Famicom didn't do the best job & probably didn't know the steps to take to prevent internal interference. Lol I know it's 5 years later now, but if you ever need someone to fix your Famicom AV mod, I can hook you up. I do very solid mod work & always guarantee my work. I can absolutely get rid of that line interference for you.

@tristamson

the pixel garbage on the right IS overscan. Has nothing to do with your converter. Many games used this space for pixel garbage back in that time. Your Famicom has vertical lines: it doesn't have to do with the converter either. I also have a modified famicom and those bars are seen on digital and crt tvs, it's just how this mod is working. I think this converter still doesn't accept the real 240p, so it's blurry and washed out and has no benefit at all. It looks exactly the same as if you connect with your TV via composite. If you want better and authentical quality (which means, 240p is accepted and processed correctly), you need to use adapters, which can process 240p and linedouble it to the minimal accepted 480p (the minimal resolution many modern tvs accept and don't ruin).

I bought this adapter because I had one of the "Mini" cheap ones and the image was stretched and besides that, the PS2 output signal looked really dark. This one gives a sharper image and higher contrast, and SNES, N64 and Gamecube look really good with it, but the PS2 still looks dark as hell. I just wanted to warn anyone who wants to buy this to play PS2. Still, it might be the best RCA-HDMI adapter out there right now.
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 6 лет назад
For PS2 I'd recommend the HD Retrovision cables honestly
@kodorogames
@kodorogames 6 лет назад
My biggest problem is that the HD monitor that I use doesn't have a way to change aspect ratio by itself, it's always 16:9, so images from this kind of adaptors (and I'm guessing HD Retrovision) get always stretched, and I hate that. That's why I bought this CoolDigital adaptor, because it changes the aspect ratio itself. I think it's the only way for me to play this consoles in this monitor without getting a stretched image. Anyway, if you know about a component-hdmi adaptor that also has the option to change aspect ratio, please let me know because I've been searching and apparently they simply DON'T EXIST.
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 6 лет назад
It should display the native output of the unit, so if it's 4:3 natively you should get 4:3 on the display one would think.
@kodorogames
@kodorogames 6 лет назад
Well, since my monitor only has HDMI input, instead of HD retrovision (which I'd have to buy a COMPONENT-HDMI adaptor, and as they display stretched 16:9, it wouldn't solve my problem) I just bought a PS2-HDMI adaptor, just to try and see if it displays properly or stretched. I'll write again when it arrives. My monitor is an Asus MX259H, just so you get to know how this things work altogether.

hmmmm someone complained about me using one of these (except with s-video) on my C64 because it's "30FPS". I can't find any evidence of this anywhere. My C64 is only partially working and I don't have an SD card reader (for games) for it yet. But one thing I did notice is the 4K monitor was full screen. I figured it was just extending the color border, but maybe it was in 16:9 all along. I'll see if holding down the button makes a difference. I should find out soon if it has a 30/60 FPS issue as I should have the SD card reader today and I know exactly which ram chip has failed and have a replacement for it.

I must rather play in full screen i cant stand black bars on sides if there back ground then its ok like snes classic has
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 3 года назад
But the thing is that the video is designed for that 4:3, you're stretching the image when you go full-screen 16:9

What do you expect from an old device... PS4 quality?
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 4 года назад
No, but when you compare to what a RetroTink can do, these aren't with the investment IMO.

Well in my case is just doesn't work for me because on n64 it looks ok, but on snes oh my god is just garbage on super metroid I notice a lot artifact on the spirits. the worst example is F-Zero is looks terrible it has artifact not only on the spirits as well in the background. On pre render graphics such as Killer Instinct you don't notice the artifact that much as F-zero did. If these cheap thing work for 480i consoles, but 280p doesn't work very well.

Yeah, it's really tough on the 240P side of things. Really it is garbage in, garbage out!

RoXolid Productions Honestly the true way to play snes games on HDMI is to get a clone console or if some TV support 280p video on component the retrovison cable is other options the only drawback If you're TV doesn't support 280p it will work unless you have the OSSC work. Fortunately my lcd support 280p and it can switch to 4:3 in HDMI so for me is not a problem.

Any info on the original Xbox? Will these adapters work on it?
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 4 года назад
It probably would but don't waste your money, there's so many better solutions out there. Pound Technologies and Hyperkin both have HDMI cables, you can get component video cables and use something like a RetroTink as well

Maybe, but my Sharp Famicom Twin has the same issue and that has native composite out

Sega genesis is horrible with composite video. But slightly better than with RF.

The great thing about the Genesis is the fact it outputs RGB right from the box!

@@RoXolid So can SNES. At least it can output component video, which is very similar to VGA. But the former has one short which compresses the video signal, and thus VGA generally gives a better picture.

@@RoXolid Awesome. I have the original SNES 001, purchased in Aug-September 1991 at a store in WA state. My buddy is busy repairing its power supply (the AC adaptor pin on back of the console is loose). I can't wait to see how it looks through my Retrotink 2X using my old purple Monster S-video cable (that also will work with the N64, same multiout connector) with nitrogen gas injected dielectric for sharpest video possible .
