Shweeet video Andrew 😜 Some interesting comparisons on the old and new clubby. I just cannot get over the ridiculous GTI badges on the front of the doors..🫣 Who thought that was a good idea at VW. A lovely mention about Mr VW Neil Birkitt, indeed a legend when it comes to all things VW and Audi. 🙏🏻 Keep up the great content Andrew.
The VW in the garage will be the last one in our family the lack of a manual transmission signals the end for us; it is a deal breaker so we will be looking for a new vehicle manufacturer to support.
On the golf 8 you can do alot with out going through the menu's. Heated seats can be turn on by touching the hot and cold at the same time. Also new car looks like it's going backwards. Touch screen then buttons on the steering wheel, prefer haptic. I've never hit them on my mk8 r.
Good tip re heated seats. Agreed re haptic it’s just those that review expect everything to take no learning which is not the case for owners. Cars are now complicated but overall better as more customisable so reviews need to adapt accordingly
I think i will be keeping my Mk8 Clubby .... Take a look at the VW ireland site for the price of the standard Golf Gti, built one with a few extras for the tidy sum of 62k Euros !!!! Hate the positing of the radar, my mk7 went in a few times for re-calibrating due to stone hits.. And the new screen great new software etc but looks stuck on and not as slick as the mk8 , IMO of course..
Why have they put back seats in , it`s surpose to be a track car and capable of beating the civic Type R times around the track. Well at least the original one did, I was hopping it would have been designed around the original. It`s surpose to be a hardcore version of the Golf gti.
The original Clubsport was pretty tame (265 PS and back seats), the Clubsport S was the hardcore one and you have to have a Clubsport to get a Clubsport S so it may come - I can imagine them getting record back for the 50th anniversary year of the Golf but usually done by June so maybe that will be 2026 for GTI 50 years
Yes, this irritates me, I just had to unsubscribe from another channel that started this and then it ballooned to everything that started with an S!! Stop
I’m just expressing my opinion but I ran a few wheels on my 8CS & the general consensus was they were all a lot more in keeping with the car’s motorsport aspirations.
Talk of illuminated badges always reminds me of Wolseleys and Scotland Yard in old movies. As for VW, I’m still disappointed there’s a tier above GTI. Having created a market-defining brand, why cheapen it by having ‘R’ sit above it? Could have GTI CS, GTI R etc. And GTE should have been an estate, not a hybrid. Grumble, mumble, whinge, moan… Yours, Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.
@@pmas27 I thought so too at first but “Go To Hell” would probably have precluded that. GTI-H though would work for me. They probably never considered GTE because we’re the only ones who call them estates. Combi, kombi, break, station wagon etc.
If you use 2 fingers to tap on the temp slider, it’s a heated seat short cut. Also if you touch the seat icon on the screen, it’s a climate control shorty cut.
The problem with the Richmonds is they aren’t a very sporty looking wheel which looks silly with that big spoiler plus 7.5J means they are well into arch
It definitely feels more like a Golf inside but the 8 does drive significantly more sweetly if you like to push - it’s tricky - the driving is what the journos bang on about but your missus liking the quality of the interior gets overlooked
Do you have any ideas on the when you might be able to order the Mk8 facelift GTE? and are there any events you can see them at in uk? I know you’ve posted a video already 👍🏼
Uk launch event is July and GTE should be ready by then as it will sell big. Drove the mk8 version and liked it. Got to work 25 miles on pure EV range and a lot was motorway which is not ideal speed for range. Good car
You can’t see the wheels when driving but can see the interior and that centre console plastic is shocking. Don’t remember it that bad on my Mk8 CS but at least £32k brand new I wasn’t that fussy 😉
Another fine review Andrew. Looks like VW have made the necessary tweaks to the exterior of the mark 8; just a shame they didn’t complete the story inside with a bit more carbon fibre. Palpable buttons on the steering wheel will please many I’m sure! Now you’ve just got to drive it! 😉
@@volkswizard A fake Chinese version of Amazon. Where pictures are edited, look doctored and you don't receive what was shown in the description photos.
I've just bought a brand new cupra leon 300 vz2 design edition much better looking car and better value for money I had a mk7 gti clubsport and the cupra is a much better car.
Great information Andrew as always - Looks great and loving the Alfa inspired wheels as we sadly see a much smaller pool of petrol performance hatches - hoping uk cars arrive soon and you get to do a thorough road test - I hope new price doesn’t quash demand
The pic of the black one was New Zealand registered from new and otherwise identical to UK Edition 30. At the risk of offending you (hope not…) they are nice but not on a black car.
Well done Andrew a great video and I think we do have to wait to see more about if there are enough improvements but I miss my golf a lot and loved my 8 to drive so I would definitely look at one money permitting a clubsport but if not a lower spec model hope you and Kate are well
Thanks Daniel all good thanks (inc. Kate), hope you are too. Mk8s do drive well in that is for sure, not widely appreciated by those who have never driven one but hope the reviewers can no forget infotainment issues and talk about the good bits
Not a big fan of the side stripes on the Club Sport. Looks very cheap and aftermarket. I would almost rather it be a “sleeper” with no badging rather than with the cheesy side striping.
That all came from the guy at Avis in Munich in 2016 who was ringing up his head office and explaining I didn’t want the normal GTI because I’d ordered a bloody guaranteed ‘ Clubschport’ - they were on the Avis fleet, crazy really
The mk8 one didn’t do it for me, weirdly the sleeker rear end compared to 7.5 didn’t look as good in R guide. They won’t change that but maybe new R styling will work better
I've got a mk7 gti performance on a 2014 it's a great motor I don't think I could cope with all that technology on the 8.5 clubsport but I'm 65 so old folk syndrome 😂
It’s definitely easier to navigate the tech in 8.5. All you need is a whizz kid with a laptop to deactivate it assuming you insurer allows it and VW haven’t made it impossible
I answer to buying a new VW, no way, I’ve had several VAG group cars and they all been plagued with electrical gremlins. Moved to BMW and bought a 128ti, car designed to directly rival a GTI and I must say it wipes the floor with a Golf in every sense.
@@smiddysmidton8313 yes, and the dealerships don’t BS you the way VAG group dealers do. It always amazes me that the Germans design such nice cars and let the good old British workman in VW Audi dealers totally mess them up. Shall I open my lengthy list……..
Hi Andrew, it’s tough one as the Clubsport looks amazing, as always the standard GTI offers great value and the brilliant gtiness that is always undeniable Brilliant thank you VDub:)
Nice to have the choice I guess JB. One thing about base GTI is that it’s more classless without the boy racer bits and that oddly appeals to me a lot, must be getting old 👴
The price is what worries me Jay. The hype for what is just a minor facelift makes me think this time they are going to ramp up the marketing & the price
My pleasure. Yes of course, you get the base GTI & R but no Clubsport. I am sure they have their reasons at Wolfsburg but they do work in mysterious ways
That’s very kind of you to say sir 😊 self employment, no kids, cycling/walking and a decent diet (thanks to my wife). 30 to 50 in case you didn’t work it out. All down hill from here though 😁
Andrew please fix your recording setup! Antiflicker set to 50 hertz, if already set you could do better to change your led bulbs if you’re filming. The echo in your audio is a bit distracting can you mic closer or maybe choose a less echoey room? Maybe I’m being picky but this report could be more credible if you’re not sounding like you’re in the bathroom! Interesting info though however, please keep at it!
Unlike some manufacturers I appreciate positive criticismSo far I’ve bought miles, made sure frame rate at 60 fps on my phone and all help with production quality😉Agreed re audio quality. I did one bit with mic closer and lost the echo but too late by that point. Video took a solid day as it was. This is only the second time I’ve filmed there but will sort for next time 👍
@@volkswizard Aha. UK mains frequency is 50 Hz - have you really set your phone to 60 Hz as you say? Needs to be 25 or 50 fps, Also some leds show flicker more obviously, especially if on dimmers. Recommend using 30/60 Hz in the USA or other countries where mains is 120v/60Hz ac. Appreciate difficulty recording indoors on a phone however if this is your option, better would be to use a “proper” camera and personal mike, wired or radio. Used to read your editorials in VW mags many years ago and as you say reviews should be honest and critical where criticism is due - so sorry if my comments hit a nerve!
@@volkswizard I enjoy your appraisals of V dubs (we currently have 4 in the family) I wish VW would check out comments from content like yours before going ahead with changes, i admit the digital software and hardware needed a change but as you said couldn’t they blend into the dash better, skimping on rear door inserts is cheapskating and still waiting for some nice backlit knobs, not too keen on the pattern change on the seats preferred the diamonds looked more VW.
No, the market is just so unpredictable. The forced introduction of EVs into the new market is predicted to push ICE back up to post COVID boom levels meaning. Plus I do a few per month direct to trade with very little overhead which works out better some months. Also I’m reluctant to get back into a commercial tenancy as it’s largely unregulated unlike say a residential one.
Still VW continue to give you little options. No manual gearbox option still. No keyed ignition option still. No manual handbrake option still. No 3 door option still. Also the dash on the golf should have had a proper one just like on the new audi a3, with no screen in your face, obstructing your view of the outside. VW are like politicians, they continue to not listen to what the public wants, and end up paying the price. The fans are at their whit's end.
There no chance of keyed ignition ever again, imagine the hassle having to align unique keys with their barrels in new cars! Electric parking brakes are good as so many times cars have rolled away as brakes cool with normal handbrake. The screen not being integrated seems to be accepted by a lot of manufacturers but the integrated screen of pre facelift 8 not working is unacceptable so it is progress. The A3 screen is tidier but IMHO that air vent plonked on dash top is much more if an aesthetic barnacle than the 8.5s new screen 😵💫
Hi, I have some questions and maybe you can answer them. What turbo is it in this new Clubsport, is38 or something else. what brand and model? Will this Clubsport have dual port injectors? Front bumper, any air channel for the front brakes?
I can only tell you what’s been published but I think it’s safe to assume not much has changed in those areas. I had no issues with brakes on a very fast track so I doubt they’ll have changed those - maybe with the Edition 50🤞
