Correction: Timecode is synced via Multi-port, which is located just below the USB-C port. 8:51 - LOVE the fact that you can display the digital level gauge WITH the recording info overlay!!! That is missing from the A7iv and you have to cycle through all your display modes to get it. This feature alone is worth picking up an FX camera!

What is a digital level gauge? Like exposure levels?

@@spaceghostcqc2137 No, it's a gyro level. In woodworking it would be considered a spirit or bubble level. Having it on screen along with all the other info is a game changer in terms of usability. Most other camera makes already allowed it.

Have the FX3 and it does everything I need it to do. If the FX30 came out before I might have went with that. We're spoiled as filmmakers. Wasn't too long ago we were all shooting on Canon 5Ds and Pansonic GH1s.

Great video, thank you so much, this is a much needed comparison!! What I wondered is how the crop mode of the a7iv stacks up to the fx30 because you'd basically have the best of both worlds: you could use aps-c lenses or affordable cine zooms for super35 but still take advantage of the better low light performance etc. when using full frame lenses when shooting 4k 24p or in FHD. Did you do any tests in that regard? :)

I have been wowed by the FX30 but the fun part is I have an A6600 and can use the same lenses and batteries on both. A6600 I can do for photos and have it as a "B" cam to the FX30. I want to get more lenses but I don't want to have to spend on multiple lenses.

We have both the FX30 and A7iv and LOVE the a7iv. You need to add the Ulanzi cooling fan ($50) but then it never overheats. With a SmallRig cage adapter, you can add the same top-handle for XLR audio just like the FX3/FX30. The EVF is AMAZING for in-camera.

Love your detailed review. I only wish you'd do streaking tests of each cameras. My a7c has severe streaking in S-log3, and noticable in S-log2. Now I want to upgrade to a7 iv, hope will not in it anymore.

Prefer the A7 IV since I like being able to do well in both, photography and video. It's serves as an excellent B-cam for videos.

as always very nice and detailed video guys ! But I have a question: How would the autofocus work on the FX30 + Sigma MC11 + 18-35mm ? I'm considering it because I have the lens already, its amazing and I have the FX30 on the way already but if the autofocus is not that great, might just go for a analog adapter, manual focus and stick with native lenses for its autofocus. (of course I know the 18-35 might not beat a native lens but if its close enough, it'll be worth it for me. )

I use a number of sigma lenses on my a7siii with the MC11 and the autofocus works splendidly. So I imagine it’d be a similar case with the fx30

Autofocus is as good as native with MC-11. Only drawback is there is a fairly loud autofocus clicking sound from 18-35

For cinematographers on a budget: put a good lens on the FX30 and you could probably fool a lot of people by saying it was shot with an FX3 or even a more expensive camera probably. I think the FX30 is just at the sweet-spot where you begin to see very deminishing returns in terms of what you pay vs what you get. So I would rather put that extra money into some great lenses, unless your plan to spend like $20,000 or more on your camera gear that is.

agreed. with reduced rolling shutter in crop mode, the A7IV makes an excellent Super 35 video camera with the *option* to shoot full frame. that has always been my approach to using mine. this has has been affirmed for me with Sony’s recent APS-C lenses i am anticipating on getting for my A7IV.

@@justinlaturno I have a7iv and I use tamron 17-28 2.8 and sony 55 1.8 and sometimes for video I use the sigma 18-35 1.8 with sigma mc 11 and works great. I do arquitecture and interior design videos . the fx 30 its a nice video camera but indoors when you don't lot of space you can't match a lens like 12mm full frame 2.8(4k 24fps) in apsc also in bright light that screen for sure you won't see nothing because you also don't have evf so you have to invest in a external monitor and for 4k 120 you must buy the news card from sony tipe b that are way expensive. I think the a7iv have the good of both worlds photography and video with better iso performance in low light .

The FX30 would've been the perfect beginner filmmaker camera if the sensor resolution was the same as the FX3. Meaning better low light performance than 26MP and faster rolling shutter. Only caveats to that camera.

Exactly. It seems like Sony did it the wrong way around by having a "jello" high-res apsc sensor but an "uncroppable" low-res FF sensor, which is counter-productive for video.

Fx 30 has similar rolling shutter performance as c70 but more detailed xavc footage. And it can take nice photos as well. 26 mp is not an issue but slower processing speed is.

Sony might use this 26mp sensor across their whole apsc lineup, just as they used 24mp in a6100-a6600 bodies, you basically design 1 sensor that does it all

thats probably my biggest hiccup with wanting to buy that camera. if it had the same 8ms rolling shutter that would be obvious but the fact they went with 26mp on a video camera is bizarre since you are subsampling and ditching most of the data, getting worse lowlight performance and rolling shutter. honestly all 3 cameras have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to video which makes all of them not favorable in my opinion as there should be a clear winner.

If I had to pick one of course the FX3 would be my choice as I absolutely love the image that it produces, although the price is clearly higher than the other 2 and the fact that you can't buy it without thee handle is no help to reduce the investment. Between FX30 and A7IV I'd choose the first as the A7IV apparently has a major issue with overheating which makes it unreliable to work with.

I went with the FX30 for the better internal recording. The noise reduction on the FX3 really kills the organic texture a cinema camera should have.

Would be an easy choice for me, the FX30 but with the price that is being sold l in US. The price of €2.200 or £2.100 it's ridiculous compared to the $1.800. even with the pound down, it's not fair such a big price gap

You have to add the state tax on for any prices you see in the USA. They dont quote them...even in supermarkets...so when you get to the till you get slapped with whatever VAT they charge in that state ontop of the price you see on the shelf.

I love how the release price of the FX30 in the USA was $1800 (£1400) but in the UK it was sold for £2099. £700 above the exchange rate.

The biggest difference to the FX3 is croppin in slow-motion IMHO. Also low light performance is night and day different. It's like an entirely different camera.

Yo I've been searching through all the videos for the FX 30 and I'm still unsure, so I'm a complete amateur and I'm looking for my first proper camera, at the moment I use a Sony Xperia Pro I and a canon M50 mk2 and I've been looking at the FX 3 for a year but the price is always stopping me where as this is far more affordable but alot of people are telling me to just save the extra for the FX 3, but after getting lenses , monitor and a rig, I just can't justify the price of the FX 3 as an amateur. From what I've seen the fx30 is a great camera but what is your opinion on buying it as a "first " proper filming camera ? to learn with, maybe take some classes to really get a grip with all the features, or is it important to get full frame for this ?

The FX30 is an INSANELY GOOD camera to start out with! Soooo good. I started out with a Panasonic GH1 as my first camera while in film school. While the FX30 is in many ways "better" than my Sony FS7 I have now!

In US fx30 and fx3 price difference are half. But from where i am at the price for fx30 with xlr is 9000 while fx3 is 15750. It's only a 6,750 difference. Though i can buy the 3 new apsc lens with that price difference. It's really hard to choose between them as i really like the fx3 since from the start. I am happy that fx30 was introduced because it looked like fx3. A7siii here is just 12,500 so it is 3,500 difference but the looks of the fx is not there. Don't like the looks of a7siii as it looks like a normal camera. If i choose the fx30 will it still be good? Planning to use it on my youtube channel and maybe do some indie films. Hoping you could help me decide.

Why have only one?? You could get a new FX30 *and* a secondhand a6300 all for a total cost much lower than an a7Smk3! *And* you'd have a better camera for filming with, while having a nifty B Cam too. (arguably better for stills too)

Can you shoot crop mode with A7 IV? i do a lot of surf photography from shore using 200-600 and need that extra reach. so if i shoot in 60p how much does it crop ?

I'm confused. are you shooting photo or video. for photo, it dosn't matter, you can just crop in post. but in video, that's is a whole different story, your 200-600mm in 4k 60p will become 300-900mm.and with active Ibis ON. it's about 350-1000mm. If you use clear image zoom in 4k, that's another 1.5X crop(450-1350mm) and in 1080p it will be 2X crop(600-1800mm)

I never understood the word 'pre-amp' - is this measurable? Is there a number, that shows me "ah, yea, it got better preamps .." ?? Maybe you have a video on that, I'll check that out

No pre-amps do not have easily measurable stats like resolution or framerate. Gotta use those ears to gauge the pre-amp fidelity.

I just got the fx 30 not delivered yet and have a brand new 6600 I was going to sell it but may keep both for just that reason the fx 30 smokes the 6600 for cinematic film look Sony is full of it for making need to keep both. I have seen picture test that show similar pics from both I will update you when it comes in.

Basically if you have the money buy the FX3. If you don't have the money or are worried about the upcoming financial recession like Bank of England intervening on the pension fund disaster last week then save your money and get the FX30

@@telford2155 My guess is these supply issues will resolve quickly once the squeeze really starts hitting. No more free money from the government propping up markets. They need markets to crash to stop inflation and the US dollar is wrecking havoc around the world. P.S. if you are American and on trip overseas you can buy goods for stupid cheap prices. The dollar conversion on a FX3 makes it close to $200 cheaper in England because the pound is crashing.

@@vlcthefish good point on the outlook financially. the markets basically have to crash or the gov is screwed with controlling inflation so they got to kill it which means they also need employment to go higher and will keep raising rares. this will impact everyone and curious how camera companies respond once users are not buying every new release they put out.

Just wanted point out that lenses for smaller sensors are not less expensive if you're equating for the fact that you're getting worse noise performance, dynamic range, and less background blur with the same field of view and aperture. To get equivalent results the lenses end up being very similar in price.

FX6 has the same sensor as FX3. Alexa Mini is 7MP. Cinema cameras do not use high MP sensors.

@@youareawesome8 I never said other cameras exhibited no rolling shutter. Just was pointing out how bad the one in this Sony is. I think around 27ms in full frame. which is terrible. The A7s3/FX3 I believe is around 8ms for a frame of reference. Fuji XH2s is around 12ms. Canon r5 is 15.5. Its a side effect of an underpowered camera with inadequate readout speed, and it absolutely affects performance even if you aren't whipping your camera around when its that bad.

@@joshkiddfilms1295 You got your values for X-H2S wrong. X-H2S is ~9.7ms at 14 bit readout and 5.3ms at 12 bit readout. FX30 is 15.7ms. Also, there's no way non-stacked sensors are gonna match stacked sensors in terms of readout speeds. 15.7 is not fantastic, but it is already a very good improvement over the old 2014 sensors that were still being chucked into the ZV-E10. I was hoping they would use a S35 cut of the A7iv sensor instead for faster readout, but Sony probably wants to streamline the production line, since this new 26MP is also likely the new architecture for the A7R5. It probably costs more to make a specific cut just for 1 product line. Rolling shutter of the FX30 is over-exaggerated. I QC shows before delivering them for broadcast and in the last year of hundreds of shows, I've only seen ONE whip pan. Rolling shutter aside, most people probably don't even know they aren't supposed to exceed a certain pan speed based on focal length. Majority of people are still shooting 24/25p even though not a single platform supports that natively resulting in garbage jitter due to the transcoding by social media platforms. TL;DR it's not that bad. And people have more things to worry about than rolling shutter.

@@youareawesome8 yea most full frame mirrorless have a s35 or Aps-c mode that reduces the rolling shutter. So that’s what I meant when referring to the a74 in full frame. I don’t see what you are trying to prove here. The a74 has terrible rolling shutter. Sony itself has cameras that are drastically better in that regard. Sure the a74 is higher resolution but there’s other full frame options that aren’t nearly as bad as the a74’s rs. If you are into that tho more power to you

but doesn’t the A7iv already crop at 60fps by 1.5/1.6? And they may cost the same but I already have a few APS-C lenses, it wouldn’t make sense (at least for me financially) to go A7iv AND needing to get expensive full-frame glass

@@chrswnd it's from full frame crop, but in fx30 you have already a default crop of 1.5 and another crop of 1.55. meaning you are using a sensor smaller than m43 at 4k120p. Does it make sense to you?

FX30 is overrated for the average user. The rolling shutter is TERRIBLE! It's REALLY bad; makes me wish I didn't buy it. The A74 or even the A73 is all the camera you'll need for great video and amazing photos.
