The music in this video was super distracting.

Yes, moving it back would result in the same perceived surface area than a smaller monitor that lies closer BUT a shorter distance can also take a toll on your eyes, since you have to focus much closer. During long usage sessions it may help develop near sightedness.

As someone with a 40" 4k Monitor, it is honestly freaking awesome. It's like the difference between writing on a clipboard and writing on a large desk. There's just so much space. It makes multi tasking a completely different proposition. I'll often have a web browser, a text/code editor, a terminal and a video player open side by side. And not all tightly snug and fit together like in the video. Spread out around the screen it makes it feel like I have this giant, open space to work in. It really does illicit that experience of working on a large desk with multiple books and papers just randomly placed wherever seems convenient. It has done more to transform how I use my computer than any other technical innovation of the past 15 years. I doubt I will ever go back to a smaller screen for my main desktop.

Note that this monitor has BGR panel instead of RGB so you have to tweak subpixel antialiasing settings in pretty much every app that has its own configuration.

Been using a 1080p 46" for 7 years... and love it. been thinking about getting a newer one (4k normal, 1080p gaming) and relocate the current one. 46" Full HD LED* TV with PVR and SRS Audio (100Hz Full HD Panel) Inputs... Headphones, USB, HDMI, HDMI, Y, Pv, Pr, PC Audio, VGA. With a Remote and Picture in Picture, nice and simple but works for my setup. Working on other peoples computers with tiny 24-30" does my head in now after getting used to it.

Of all things you didn't dive into, you didn't bother to talk about the hardware split screen at all (besides the quick mention) which is the real selling point of this monitor. I'm a software engineer by day and a gamer by night and I currently have four 1080 monitors in a grid and it's a hassle to setup, move, and maintain. I've thought about switching to a 4k TV but because of input lag, response times, and the fact that a full 4k display right in your face is a bad idea- I've had no desire. However, this monitor checks all of my boxes because it isn't just a 4k display, it can be used in various configurations like 4x1080. ... And yet you didn't bother to talk about it. Just because it doesn't work for you and your video editing doesn't mean it doesn't have value outside of that. I have browsers, terminals, debug windows, discord/slack, sublime, etc running at all times on different displays when I'm working and just as much on my other displays whem I'm gaming. I'm rather annoyed. I'm glad Kyle (Bitwit) talked about it (and gave some really great detail) - but I really wanted you guys to dive deep into the hardware split screen that the LG panel provides which gives the monitor value outside of being a glorified TV.

same thing i was thinking... i got 1 laptop that i use for work (coding and stuff), a surface pro, currently hooked up to a series 7 40" samsung, and - hopefully soon - a gaming rig for.. well, gaming and personal projects and even though i'm planning on setting up proper monitors for that, the option to get rid of the TV, get something like this for when I need to use all of the machines together (happens quite frequently) or just do proper window splitting would be nice.. heck: even have the ps4 on on a quarter and something like discord on pc on another one would be nice.

Philips has been selling the BDM4037UW and the Flat version of it for about a year now, I fail to see why this video pretends this is something new
@anthonymattera4556
@anthonymattera4556 7 лет назад
That is because, unfortunately, Linus didn't go over what makes this better than the other split screen (PBP) display on the market (Such as the the Phillips BDM4037UW and the Dell P4317Q) 1. Better Input Support 2. Better Input Lag (Kyle talks about this) 3. A Better Display Panel 4. (And the most important) More modes than just 4k or 4x1080 (or strange modes like the Dell has) Example: they have a mode where you can have two 1080 displays at the top and have 1 ultrawide 3840x1080 display at the bottom (or two ultrawides top and bottom). This is cool if I want to have a ultrawide display for gaming but still have 1080x4 for development, CAD/SolidWorks, Design/Modeling, etc. You can see these examples on LGs website www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-43UD79-B-4k-uhd-led-monitor I just wanted to see this in action. They have both a software and hardware mode for these split screen items and it would have been really cool to see this demoed. He just didn't bother because it doesn't fit his criteria of what he thinks a 'prosumer' is.
@Rabidum

Indeed that is very interesting, I have been looking to replace my array of various monitors for various tasks (from gaming to an eizo one) with one to "rule them all". Especially if this has acceptable blur and I can game on it as well as do my work in split screen comfortably (Software developing). Which was rather lacking on both ends in the Philips model with the blur and all, and the horrid menus/software. Thank you for pointing out the differences.

I used a 43" Samsung TV as a monitor for about 6 months for software development work. I liked it and I would use it again. The glossy screen was the key downside, so look for a matte screen. A lesser irritation was that it acted like a TV: It would turn off after a period of inactivity. To use it again, I could not just wiggle my mouse or press a key, I had to turn it on again using the remote.

Probably users can have dual-use for this monitor as a 43" (or a 38" Ultra-wide). When we don't need the 4-screens split (depend on the kind of work you're doing) ....Users can Increase the height of the Window's TaskBar on the bottom to reduce the vertical height of the monitor so that it looks like a Ultra-Wide 38". Plus, you get more taskbar area to display applications tabs. ( Go to 4:20 on this video and you know what I mean ). On the other hand, LG could have a built-in function to BLACK-OUT the TOP and BOTTOM (like movies) to create a more seamless conversion to Ultra-Wide.

I use 43 inch, 4K TV very comfortably. I use only 75% of width & 75% of height - which is about 60% of the total screen real estate. Also, adjusted display size to 110% which makes reading text much easier. Great tv-monitor at 2-3 feet from my eyes!

If there was a built in program, where you could set the "monitor" to separate itself into multiple windows, so you could run multiple programs in full screen mode, that would be great. A lot of professional programs are made to be run in fullscreen, with you running any other programs you have on separate monitors, which would suck for "monitors" like this. Running the programs in smaller, separate windows usually cuts down on utility and functionality. BTW I don't know if someone has already made a program like this, but if LG would recommend this for professional use, they should create a pre-installed program for it.

I use the LG 43ud-79 instead of a TV at 4-6 foot viewing distance. At less than 4 feet, pixels are noticeable. Speakers are more than satisfactory for non-audiophiles, but lack bass. As linus notes, it is a matte panel, great for well-lit rooms. Most TVs are glossy. $200 over a comparable TV gets you a matte panel, great I/O and 10-20ms Less input lag than modern tv panels. Otherwise, save that $200 and use a 43" 4k TV as a monitor.

This is exactly what I've been looking for in a TV. Basically a monitor, no bells or whistles for "better color" or "better picture" Just the basic TV with speakers even though I have a surround sound system. Perfect price for the size and 4k.

I use a 40" 1080p TV as my main screen in my three monitor setup (two 24" monitors on the sides), I have been doing this for quite a few years now, even before super slim TVs, and enjoy this type of setup. It is/has been difficult to get good 4k TV, with high refresh rates etc., in only 40"-43" size. So this is something I would very much like to upgrade to. As to getting a bigger screen, I tried that a few years ago. My now living room TV (a 55" plasma) was on SUPER sale when I was replacing/upgrading my main PC screen so I bought it to try it out... I had to replace it in less than a week because it was giving me headaches. I am used to a 40" TV at around 2.5+ feet for typical PC use, am accustomed to being able to see the whole screen and turn my head for better viewing of side monitors, HOWEVER, the larger 55" screen forced my eyes to focus much more difficultly to take in the entire screen and like I said ended up giving me headaches quite quickly. This, for me, makes a well built 4k "PC monitor" (especially at that price) something that would make a great upgrade to my existing style setup, though I would still need to upgrade my PC now to actually do 4k properly, so it goes on my wish list for later.

with a 4K tv, you can watch 4K youtube if you A. hook a pc to it, or B. it is a smart tv. and movies depend on the qality of the medium you get them on, did you download it in 1080p, it will be 1080, do you have a blue-ray with 4K, it will still be 4K. and a TV has image processing making the image much better then on a standard monitor, at the cost of input lag. so, a tv is still better. and on the tax, they will allways find a new way to tax you, welcome in the age of of govermental stealing.

I would say RS232 is also huge in digital signage, all those signs on the side of the highway use it so the player PC can adjust brightness and monitor the display and for indoor use to make sure the screen is on, or off at night, and ensure it's on the right input.

gonna upgrade to this (or something like it) from my dual vertical 24" 1920x1200 screens. gotta admit I am a fan of seeable pixels + no display scaling and really can use the screen space. also, adjusting brighness with two buttons on a remote is much better than crawling through an OSD (aside from screenbright + DDC/CI).

I live in a motel. I like to watch RU-vid videos and other kinds of videos from the couch or the bed. I also like to display my slideshow of keepsake photos. The motel t.v. sucks, so I watch movies on my monitor. Old screensavers look cool on a 43 inch monitor while you are chillin.

I have this monitor. Am using it right now. Overall it's pretty good. I honestly prefer the picture on my old NEC Multisync LCD2490WUXi, but that's a professional monitor meant for editing, while this is more general use. But anyway the image on the LG seems a bit COOL to me (blue) compared to the warmer tone I'm used to (I calibrate to 6500k). I have not done any calibration on the LG in order to see if I can get a warmer tone though. The only thing I hate is that even with the huge size I sill can't run windows scaling at 100% because it's still too small. Instead I need to run at 125%, which does make some UI elements and test a bit more blurry than if it was at 100%. At 100% everything is super crisp, but again, just too small for me.

Why isn't anyone talking about PWM controlled backlights? A lot of TVs use 120hz, which is kind of fine if the brightness is turned up and you watch it from several meters. But if you use it as a monitor, you'd turn down the brightness, so it'll just flash in your face 120 times a sec. For myself I bought a 43" IPS Philips monitor, it uses dc to drive the background and I'm quite happy overall. The semi-reflective surface and the slight image retention issues bother me a bit, but I can't have any bad word as I got it used for 380 us dollars worth of local currency.

Been using pretty much this for just over a year... it's great for music production. When you're working with Protools it's nice to have the vertical real-estate, to have more sends and inserts, as well as the horizontal space for a load of channels set to jumbo. Especially since in a studio you're a fair bit further back with all the controllers or mixing surfaces you may have. Then again, my previous setup was two 21.5 inch 1080p monitors... though it dosn't feel like I lose anything important when I go from my retina macbook...

Happy with my 43" (42.5" or 108cm technically) Philips, does everything I need at 3840x2160, mostly at 60fps, though I've a few games that my single GTX 980 Ti can't quite push to 60fps at such a high resolution. No huge stand, as it had little aluminum feet that were surprisingly stable, but I just went to a wall mount that gives it fantastic tilt and swivel (unfortunately no rotate). My desk is very deep and sits far from the wall so the size is not overwhelming now that it's off the desk and on the wall. 20" was too much but 26" is perfect, with 9 point Helvetica and Times being quite easily readable.

Matte screen - good. Latency - like my old acer LCD: good However: only 30 and 60Hz through DisplayPort?! I have to force 24Hz for movies (Custom Resolution Utility FTW) Sometimes I feel it is way darker than my previous LG television ... even if it is way brighter than my tablet O_o For some reason, LG put the background light several millimeters behind the screen, which can be seen in the edge of the screen. Even though it has more HDMI than DP inputs, it can't handle well interlaced signal (the TV were way better) And how come, that if I connect a GTX 1070 to the 60Hz HDMI input, I get only 30Hz? I can force 60Hz with the above utility, but come on! Apart from these... it is 4K, so I like it :D

Sorry, Linus, but I don't quite follow your complaint about the 4k pixel density and sitting so close. How is it any different to your 38"UW, which is basically 4K? Both screens are 3840 horizontal, and would be sat at an equal distance, the only difference is the latter is shorter in height so 1600 instead of 2160. Your shots even show that the screens are equal in physical width. I agree that 3-windows on an UW suits (most) workflow better than 4-quarters on a 16:9, but surely both screens have the exact same pixel density and, save panel quality (which you don't go in to) would look the same from equal distance. I have been using a cheap Seiki 4K 39" TV as a development monitor for the last three years and have loved the increased resolution and have no problem viewing that "TV" from a short distance, with the brightness dialed down and some other tweaks. There is a 4" difference between my TV and Yudi, but I don't think it would make that much difference, and don't quite follow why you appear so dismissive of this TV, ahem monitor. Moreover, I would have appreciated you delving a little more in to pixel density comparing this display to other ones to give us a clearer picture on your complaints; a level of detail you have touched on before in your original LG 38" UW review here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mDBWH5XGbjg.htmlm53s. Furthermore, the pixel density on a 24" or 27" 1080 display that plenty of people buy and you review as great screens is going to be far inferior to this panel, which is, as you say, basically 4x21" 1080 screens in one. I know those are aimed at gamers and have other redeeming features, but for productivity they are awful.

Honestly I'd get this to use it as a "TV" to watch shows off my laptop in the living room as in my country there is an annual €160 TV licence that we have to pay that would be rendered null by the fact that this is a monitor.

my laptop is plugged into my 32" bedroom tv and I use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse so I can surf the web from my bed. yes, i would like to upgrade to at least 1080p as my720p tv makes the text a tiny bit fuzzy but other than that if you are not doing professional things or high-level gaming then using a tv works perfectly fine.

You’re neglecting a big difference between this and a TV- apps. Almost every TV is Smart now and has all of these added on features that reduce performance and add cost. This is a stripped down TV focused towards computer users instead of typical consumers.

My neighbour was playing shitty music while I was watching this. So I turned my volume up. He turned his up at the same time, so I turned mine up higher. Then I realised the shitty music was coming from this video. Stop it.

It's funny my name is Jeff and I own a 40" 4k monitor but that wasn't my argument... it's more that I use the four comers of the screen to do 4 thing at once, for example play a game watch a youtube video, reseach something and do searches based upon what I found on that research without having to switch between tabs. Also running 5 EVE Online Client with everything visible which was the main driver to go for a 4k 40" monitor after my 1080p 27" 120Hz monitor packed it in but after like a week you can't go back to using a smaller screen or at least I can't, I am going to buy a 1440p 144Hz monitor for gaming because as you said you cannot view the hole screen at once so FPS games suck balls but for everything else that you can run in windowed mode it's great, because you can do MANY things at once... well it really tops out at 4 things but yeah, it's plenty.

43" for a monitor is way too big. i used a 32" FHD Samsung TV for gaming and i was like 1m+ from it. it takes a while to get used to, but u get used eventually. 43" on a normal desktop is waaaaay to big. you'd look at it like a live tennis match. no i'm happily using 2 Dell 24" 1900x1200 and work great for my gaming - no shooting :) and for other normal stuff.

weesh theyre still worlds below a decent pair of speakers. It‘s just that a lot of people buy soundbars because they sound „better“ (not hard if your TV sounds like shit) instead of getting some real speakers which sound even „betterer“.

Agreed. Silence is golden. There people should learn to Quiet Their Minds. People who can't sit still and allow the silences to carry meaning are the ones who have lack of impulse control and the attention span of a goldfish. So yeah, mostly Americans.
